KISS came out during the era of what was called "Shock Rock" or "Glam Rock." Artists like David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era and Alice Cooper. They have always said that they wanted to be the group they never saw growing up. Their shows had a lot of fireworks, smoke bombs and flashes. Each member created their own on stage personality and make up. Gene Simmons liked those old Horror and Monster movie classics from Universal. Like Godzilla, Dracula, etc. So he created "The Demon" persona. Paul Stanley loved those ol' Motown groups and thought of himself as a Lover. So he created "The Starchild" persona. Peter Criss had been through some tough and dangerous times as a kid growing up. He thought he had 9 lives like a cat. So he created "The Catman" persona. Ace Frehley was into outer space and astronomy, so he created "The Spaceman of Space Ace" persona. A lot of their music from 1974 to 1978 is some of their best music. Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, Rock n' Roll All Nite, Love Gun, God Of Thunder, Deuce, Cold Gin, Shock Me, Beth, Hard Luck Woman, Baby Driver, Strutter, Firehouse, are just a few of the songs they were known for back then. In the 80's they switched to the L.A. hair metal sound like everyone else. Here is some interesting trivia for you. This song come about out of a bet. The producer of the album made a bet with Paul Stanley that he couldn't write a Disco song, so he did. I remember that era well and the "album burning" stunts a lot of Churches had in their parking lots back then. KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, anything that was hard rock or metal. They had people show up with their kids albums and burn them right there in the parking lot. It was crazy. As if burning an album would get rid of hard rock or metal music. But yeah this was a great reaction. You might look into some of their other songs. They were a fun group and like you said this was about stage personas that got people's attention.
Oh, they were HUGE in 70's! And fans were in millions ("Kiss Army"). "Detroit Rock City" in 2006 Live Concert at Mandalay Bay Events Center of Las Vegas next, please.
Ah yes, KISS in the disco era. Cheesy, but fun. It's a massive rabbit hole, let's go! I grew up on KISS, was 6 when this song was released. Rock and Roll All Night is probably their most famous. I have heard it at numerous sporting events over the years. Same with Detroit Rock City.
Unfortunately, most women hate regular Kiss songs. It’s great for those of us that lived through it and loved the metal roots but for some reason chicks just don’t get it…besides maybe the hair metal phase in the 80’s but the rest of us hate that so hard to find agreement on “the best” Kiss. She’ll hate real Kiss I think 🤷♂️ Kiss Alive and Kiss Alive II are classics
In '74, i was 14, and a friend introduced me to KISS. From that point on, every inch of my bedroom was covered with KISS pictures and posters, except the ceiling, that had 1 poster, Farrah Fawcett😊
I had never heard of KISS till KISS ALIVE came out.I walked in a record store ( the good ol days) and right in the middle was a big display of the album. That album cover was enough for me to buy it even though I hadn't heard a song of theirs. I was 14 and the rest is KISSTORY!
You need to listen to the Unplugged version of I Still Love you by KISS Paul Stanleys range is awesome been a fan since my first show in Nashville TN on the very first tour 4/16/1974
Kiss is better than their reputation. I am sure 80% of the people who don't like Kiss don't know much about them. The album 'Destroyer' is iconic to me, 'Detroit Rock City' or 'God of Thunder' are my favorite songs on that. Then 'Creatures of the Night' and 'Domino' are insanely good but less known. Other great choices for a listen: 'Cold Gin', 'She', 'Black Diamond'. Sweetest love song is 'Beth' for sure.
I saw them twice in late 70's in michigan. They even was in Cadillac High School homecoming parade and halftime! Their song Beth is smooth. Peace from Northern Michigan.
Rock and Roll all Nite ; is their most popular. Detroit Rock City, Beth, Love Gun, Duece, Shout it out Loud, Hotter than Hell - are some from their painted face era, then the unpainted KISS there are Lick it Up, Forever, Crazy Crazy Nights, Heavens on fire. Are a few to start with. There's plenty more they've been around since the early 70's.
Nice review! They were a band transitioning from glam/classic rock through the disco era when this was made. They used the make up to establish a brand and following which developed into the Kiss Army!! Check out Calling Dr. Love, Detroit, Rock City, I want to Rockin Roll All Night, Shout it Out Loud, and Beth (Ballad).
Back then there were a lot of bands. Kiss wanted to stick out from the others. So they painted their faces. They were mysteriously different. So people were drawn to them.
This song is an earworm! The story I heard was amid the disco era, KISS wrote this song to show how easy it was to write this type of music, and anyone could write a disco song. It ended up backfiring and became one of their biggest hits. Old school fans and even members of KISS themselves hate this song, but as I long time KISS fan myself, I think it is one of their best👍
I had back row tickets in 77 in Toronto...Gene was on an elevated stage, awesome performance and the gave me an autograph before they went into their dressing room to party ..bubble gum band for sure but loads of fun...great marketing more than anything and they would tell you that as well
seen KISS two years in a row in the 2000's and they put on a magical show, the sounds, lights and theatrics was just awesome. there will never be another KISS just not possible
Here's the quintessential KISS song list: 1. Rock and Roll All Night 2. Beth 3. Shout It Out Loud 4. God Of Thunder 5. Calling Dr. Love 6. Do You Love Me 7. King Of The Night Time World 8. Strutter 9. Duece 10. Black Diamond
Saw them twice in the mid-70s. Very professional. They are strictly business, there to put on a good show. Like Barnum & Bailey's circus, the show must go on. Both Simmons and Stanley had a strict no-drugs/no-booze policy. They merchandised the bee-jeezus out of their image and brand. They were businessmen first, musicians second.
"Say what you will about Kisses musicianship, but there was not a harder working band out there." Neil Peart, RUSH drummer from Beyond the Lighted Stage documentary.
This was my first favorite song from KISS and I think I was 10 or 11 at the time. KISS was known for their makeup more than their music. Of course every band has their fans but the paint eventually became more of a gimmick because nobody ever knew what they looked like. Even on interviews they would wear their trademark makeup, that is until 1983, when they decided to release their 11th album and feature the band on the cover without the paint for the first time in their history. They are really an awesome band and I'm glad you've taken the step to explore their music. I would love to see you react to more. The 70s and 80s got a bad rap for the music that evolved into those eras. "Devil music" was the accusation but believe me when I tell you it's much like when you questioned the stag head on fire at the Wacken Music Festival during Ghost Love Score. You said the bull is representative of evil or associated with satanism in many cultures? Evil and Satanism was the last thing on their mind when they came up with the name KISS or any bands in the 70s and 80s for that matter. The bands were great and the music was just as good. Simple, very forward lyrics, talented musicians, and the message was very easy to get. This is why I love the 80s and as corny as it sounds, many people used songs to express their love to their potential partner as 80s ballads were a good way to express your feelings back then because, let's face it, some of those lyrics sound like they came right out of a poetry book. This one in particular os a bit strong as you mentioned, lol but you get my point. I'm here for more KISS reactions! See you soon. ❤️
My 13 yo grandson was obsessed with KISS when he was 5. My fiance' did his face make-up as Gene Simmons and I found an awesome costume and guitar on Amazon for Halloween that year. Everyone kept commenting on how cute he was. He was doing the whole tongue thing that Gene does and taking on those rock poses. It was so fun! We then took him to see them in concert about 4 months later. He was so excited! It ended up being a great night! #KISS
Hi Rosalie I was KISS fan in the early 80’s when in my country was forbidden” the Government called them fascist “ Was the chance for the Communism put the youth away from them and they succeeded. So I had to secretly listen to them and was amazing because I grabbed the best transition from them in the music history ( disco-pop, pop-rock, rock-classic rock, orchestral- rock, Heavy Metal) Did I missed something? From 1979-1983 they struggled to find a path to continue when many others were giving up. In those years Australia 🇦🇺 and Europe were the places where their new music grabbed fans. I recommend it to you the album “ Music from the Elder “ 1981 I think you are going to love it 😍.
From Paul Stanley, "I wrote it in 5 minutes, and it became a huge hit." Meaning, he didn't think he put the work into it that he did into his other songs and was surprised by its success. It is still KISS' #1 listen, just going over 1 billion of them on Spotify, and that doesn't even count other streaming platforms.
A favorite KISS song of mine is a sort of lesser known one called, "She." Their more well known songs like "Rock and Roll All Night," "Detroit Rock City," "Calling Doctor Love," and a ballad called "Beth" are all good songs. You're right, the make-up and image are all about the show.
Disco Kiss :D. Figured out I was getting old when I was at a department store, and over the muzak comes a familiar tune... Kiss's 'Beth'. OMG ;D Try something from Rock 'n Roll Over or Love Gun, much more representative of their music over the years.
KISS was really big on Japan, and inspired 50 yrs of musians. Recommend checking out Versailles Revenant Choir live And Aldious Dominator live Radiant A O East.
I still like Sure Know Something. Think it was the follow up hit after this one off same album. (Here in Australia anyway) It was this album that made them sooooo huge.
I love that almost every reactor on UA-cam listens to this as their introduction to KISS and it sounds absolutely nothing like 99% of their music. "Love Gun", "Cold Gin", "Detroit Rock City" and on and on. Please give them another shot (but not "Beth" 😉). Cheers.
I'm 60, and was raised on KISS. I did the makeup, the costumes, you name it. I love their early stuff, but some of their best is on Creatures of the Night. Rock and Roll Hell, I Love It Loud, I Still Love You, and War machine. Someone else said Forever...that's a good one too.
What have you got against being evil? Now, that’s just intolerant. Evil-phobia should not be tolerated. If KISS wants to identify as evil, that’s their business. What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business, even evil. You probably have a problem with Michael Jackson singing “I’m bad,” too. Sheeesh!
You absolutely nailed the just of who and what they are. Are they top notch musicians, no...but can hold their own. What they did have was a gimmick and Geme Simmons as marketing genius. Before you hop into the rabbit hole, check into the KISS brand and logo, they've dabbled in everything and made money from everything. Seen them live numerous times, forget the notion of evil, there religious and patriotic, and their shows are 2nd to none. They had pyrotechnics and theatrics long before anyone, they started pushing a outstanding live show. What to listen to....3 more songs kind of show who they are and their range. Rock and Roll All Night I'm guessing you've heard before, then there's Detroit Rock.City and then the ballad that the drummer wrote...Beth. Enjoy.
Okay, Rosalie, I've got a lot of input here... KISS was my first concert, way back in 1983. They were huge with us kids in the 70's, not so much because of their music, which was decent with some genius (Beth comes to mind), but because of the spectacular showmanship and the innuendo surrounding everything about the band. And nearly EVERYTHING, as you noted, was about six. Paul Stanley kept up a banter with the crowd that was usually x-rated. Years later I met Gene and Paul when I was at my first radio job in Sacramento. They came by to promote their new album, Hot in the Shade, and afterwards we gave them the opportunity too sneak out the back, because the front parking lot was filled with hundreds of fans. They refused, saying that without the fans, they were nothing. They marched out the front door, and proceeded to spend the next two hours signing autographs and posing for pictures. It really impressed me, and despite all the controversy, I think they deserved their fame. They certainly worked hard for it.
One reason I heard Kiss painted their face when starting out was...that way they could remain anonymous...they could walk down the street and no one would know who they were...you need to hear, "Heaven's on Fire"
One of my favorite songs from Kiss, but not very well known is "Good girl gone bad" from Crazy nights, but if you want to hear a heavy metal ballad from them, listen "I still love you" from Creatures of the Night. You're right, fragments of this song are featured in movies all the time. My favorite one is in Moulin Rouge, when Obi-wan Kenobi, er, I mean, Ewan McGregor sings to Nicole Kidman "I was made for living you, baby, you were made for loving me" and she responds in the same melody "The only way for you to love me baby, is to pay a lovely fee"
Kiss was my first concert. It was the Spirit of '76/Destroyer Tour, at the Oakland Coliseum. I was only 14, but it made a lasting impression, believe me. Kiss believed in putting on the best possible show for their fans, something somewhere between music and theater, and their shows were epic. A lot of people give Kiss grief, claiming that the make-up and shows are all a gimmick to hide mediocre music, but that's just not true. 30 gold albums and 14 platinum albums, 3 of them multi-platinum, kind of speaks for itself. According to the RIAA, they've earned more Gold Albums than any other American band in history. They were a fun band.
Suggestions for listening to different eras of KISS..... "Black Diamond" "Hard Luck Woman" "Love Gun" "Naked City" "Creatures Of The Night" "I Still Love You" "A World Without Heroes " "A Million To One" "Heaven's On Fire" "Forever" "Heart Of Chrome" "Domino"
I saw them twice in concert. I hated disco, BUT hey, the girls loved it, and I loved girls. Still do. So I went where the girls were. 😂 I love Ace’s sweet little guitar solo in this song. 🔥
Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All Nite, Hard Luck Woman, I Love It Loud, Shandi, World Without Heroes, Tears Are Falling, Turn On The Night, Reason To Live, and Forever. I've been a KISS fan since 76 when I was only 6 years old. These songs aren't my personal favorites, but some of their more "catchy" mainstream sounding songs.
I recommend you: Sure Know Something Love Gun Detroit Rock City Domino Hide Your Heart Heavens On Fire Crazy Crazy Nights Hard Luck Woman Rock N Roll All Night
*"I Was Made For Lovin' You" was KISS' first songwriting collaboration with Desmond Child, who co-wrote many songs for / worked with various artists...like Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, The Rasmus, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Cher, Roxette, Meat Loaf, Ricky Martin, Bonnie Tyler, Dream Theater,......* 👈🏼💿🎵🎸🎹🥁🎸🎵
Intro is fire. Got that base and the guitar is subtle but really good. Right at 2:04 or so, they come in with that "do do do doo da doo..." vocally, totally Bay City Rollers right there.
LOVE KISS! Well, the original lineup that you watched. My first concert was for this album in 1980 - my parents took me. Saw them about a half dozen more times by the time I got married. My first exposure to them was hearing 'Calling Dr. Love' on the radio in 3rd grade, and I was hooked! Great reaction! --- SURE HAS BEEN A WHILE since you reacted to The Warning. 'Evolve', Live at 2023 MTV VMAs, if you're interested. They have a new album coming out as well, so check out 'Hell You Call a Dream', Live at The Pepsi Center.

Kiss Alive and Kiss Alive II are classics
Disco KISS makes me giggle. But it's still inexplicably good.
They wrote that song as s shot at disco and how they disrespected it and thought that it was garbage.
Disco got to almost everyone in the seventies. Even ELO, with Last Train to London.
sad it's their most known work.
In '74, i was 14, and a friend introduced me to KISS. From that point on, every inch of my bedroom was covered with KISS pictures and posters, except the ceiling, that had 1 poster, Farrah Fawcett😊
that farrah fawcett poster is still the biggest selling poster of all time,,,,,we all had it lol
Same here brother. Black light posters and had drums. Put on my own Kiss concerts. Lol
I had never heard of KISS till KISS ALIVE came out.I walked in a record store ( the good ol days) and right in the middle was a big display of the album. That album cover was enough for me to buy it even though I hadn't heard a song of theirs. I was 14 and the rest is KISSTORY!

hard to pinpoint a particular song or video that captures what KISS was. They evolved, they changed, they grew. very wide catalog,
As all good musicians should, they refused to allow their musical style to stagnate.
Saw KISS at the Spectrum in 1978. Best concert ever.
I saw them twice in late 70's in michigan. They even was in Cadillac High School homecoming parade and halftime! Their song Beth is smooth. Peace from Northern Michigan.
You got it, KISS is a band that put on a show. Showcase who and what KISS is, try "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock and Roll All Night".
Great songs! I like their earliest stuff, black diamond,100,000 years, lick it up. Try and find the oldest versions you can find.
@@kevinrogers7650"Lick It Up" is NOT early KISS.😂

My favorite song. I grew up from 66 through the 70s and 80s. Was in the Kiss army.

I've seen KISS three times in concert, believe me it's worth every penny. 👍
No one puts on a more dazzling rock show than KISS! I know all good things must end, but they will be missed🤘🔥
Saw them twice in the mid-70s. Very professional. They are strictly business, there to put on a good show. Like Barnum & Bailey's circus, the show must go on. This was my first favorite song from KISS and I think I was 10 or 11 at the time.

I'm here for more KISS reactions!
See you soon. ❤️
I was 9 years old when this song was released. Brings back memories.
There it is ... at 5:44. THE FACE. You're feeling it. As they (Kiss) say, "You'll never forget your first KISS".
Great reaction, Rosalie! Never cared much for KISS, but they sure had some bangers.
"Beth", "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock and Roll All Night", some of their biggest hits!!

The video for "Black Diamond" on the Midnight Special would be a great one to check out. They were young, hungry, and on fire!
I recommand you : I still love you , live MTV unplugged 1995
That section from the falsetto through the guitar solo is fantastic.
Kiss never meant to look evil. A great no makeup Kiss song is " forever"
Except for Gene, who in his younger years would refer to himself as "evil incarnate". His attitude became less angsty, but he kept the look.
when this plays in my car, i catch myself going a bit too fas. love it!

KiISS is simply BAD ASS! There is a great documentary of them on Hulu explaining (Gene and Paul's upbringing and what the word KISS really came from).
Disco Kiss :D.

Try something from Rock 'n Roll Over or Love Gun, much more representative of their music over the years.

Give Boston's phenomenal "more than a feeling" a listen.
Detroit Rock City, Black Diamond, The Oath, are some of their Best Songs.
Heavens on fire and lick it up is 2 songs that are great among many others. Offical music video😎. Love your reactions🤘😎
Rosalie+KIISS=Beauty!
there is no need for a review because your expression says it all ! I am glad you liked so much the song !
Kiss are always masked, just a natural style.
GenX loves KISS!! We grew up to their songs.
The 'MTV Unplugged' version of Kiss doing 'I Still Love You' - Paul's vocals are very strong.
People that think KISS are evil are just plain ignorant
What have you got against being evil? Now, that’s just intolerant. Evil-phobia should not be tolerated. If KISS wants to identify as evil, that’s their business. What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business, even evil. You probably have a problem with Michael Jackson singing “I’m bad,” too. Sheeesh!
😂😂😂
No….they just SUCK! 🤮
@@williamcabell142you suck dude you hating on other peoples success🤖

I LOVE IT LOUD
I really was a fan. Love those times when times were those. Rrally, good times. 🤗
Enjoy.
Black Diamond from Alive!
I bet you'd like the song Crazy Nights ...
I love kiss I seen them live at the state fair in Indy Indiana long time ago they are my band 😊
Black Diamond, Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll, Rock 'N' Roll All Nite, Detroit Rock City, and Love Gun. Listen these songs from Kiss
pick any song from ALIVE!, am I right?
My start as a Metalhead was 1980 with 13 Years and that was KISS
Live versions of Black Diamond, Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud might give you an idea of the show. Cheers
Noice pick. KISS’s “God gave Rock N Roll to you” is fire 🔥 and may be worth a squint
"Black Diamond"
"Hard Luck Woman"
"Love Gun"
"Naked City"
"Creatures Of The Night"
"I Still Love You"
"A World Without Heroes "
"A Million To One"
"Heaven's On Fire"
"Forever"
"Heart Of Chrome"
"Domino"
I saw them twice in concert. I hated disco, BUT hey, the girls loved it, and I loved girls. Still do. So I went where the girls were. 😂 I love Ace’s sweet little guitar solo in this song. 🔥
The Name KISS came from Paul Stanley being in a band called Lips. He said the next logical meme was KISS so that is where the name came from.

I had Gene Simmons fashion doll when I was like 3/4
Man I wish I still had that thing
The face makeup was unique to each person. If a band member left, the new person had to choose different makeup.
