This was the first and biggest rock concert to take place in Russia since the fall of the Berlin wall which ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
I listened to an audio tribute/doc about Metallica to celebrate their latest album and was surprised to learn the story behind this song. You won't look at this song the same way after hearing it...
I know it's a year later, but if anyone didn't already mention how restrooms are used at massive shows like this, I gotchu. When I saw Metallica at Rock Am Ring in 2008, people would literally just...go... On the ground... Couldn't be bothered leaving the front rows and all that lol.
This was rounding out the end of the cold war with Russia. It's beautiful that the people of both countries just wanted to live and let live. This showed the powers that be that we don't agree with their agenda for war
Wayne was actually correct when for real said the helicopter was the fan blowing air down on the crowd. That's exactly what the helicopters were there for many people thought they might be there for crowd control or something else, but it was simply to circulate air among the crowd because they were packed in there so tight
They were under communist rule for decades and this was the first rock festival allowed in the previously Communist Russia. It was basically free because the crowds couldn't be controlled. The previously USSR soldiers joined in with the crowd because they had no control because of the sheer number of people. Dozens of people died in the crowd and it was utter chaos. Many of the soldiers were likely happy that communism fell as well. All rock music was banned in russia before this concert.
1991 towards the fall of the USSR it was a day of freedom and celebrate. Over two dozen people died that day either by being trampled or heat. Soviet troops were there with their watchful eye .
I wrote a bachelor diploma about concerts and that i definitelly the biggest, loudest and wildest concert in history, estimated average from 1 to 1,6 million and 11000 soldiers. Heaven. I was nine and only a thousand kilometers away...

There were 1.6million people there. The Soviet helicopters were there to help people get air and the guards were basically to protect the Rock Stars from the public. This was a free concert. In addition to Metallica playing: AC/DC was there, Pantera and the Black Crowes. In honor of the fall of the U.S.S. R. Now imagine being a Russian teenager and being there when all you've ever heard of western rock music was bootleg copies.

That moment, when Matallica realized, that if you had only one chance, one concert and one moment in life to prove a point and now was that time, show them what you're made of and don't hold back. This was that concert. that fact that over 30 years later that the question could be asked, was the music that good or that much better then than now is not up for debate. To be fair I don't think they would ever let the crowds get this big again given covid and such. Mascow had to be shitting their pants allowing them to play there.
1.6 Million People in 2 Days !!!!...best Morricone Song Intro ever !...the Government sent the Soviet Army as the Concert "Security".....so many people were beaten dead by them ... about 44 died during this 2 Days Festival.

Remember, most of these Russians are drunk as well, and the soldiers gave up trying to control the crowd and joined in the crowd. It was declared a national disaster like Woodstock. Pantera played also and just about had to leave by helicopter, I think they did leave or evacuate that way when the crowd became too much. Was a wild party.
Wanna see that bad side of that concert. Look up the band E.S.T. , song called Bully. They were the first band to perform that day and the military was beating people in the crowd

The guy is actually right... Those helicopters main purpose of flying in and out of the crowd is to act as aerators.
You're right. That amount of people could exhaust a potentially dangerous amount of CO2 if not properly aerated.
