- A quick unboxing and setup of the new Asus AC5300 RT-AC5300 router. This is compared against the new AC3100 and the current 'best router on the market', the RT-AC87U, which we've found to be the absolute winner in the field to date.
NOTE: After several weeks of testing, this router still does not match up to the speed, reliability, or WiFi range of the Asus AC2400 (RT-AC87U). That router is still the best-in-field, although this is a close second. Given the price difference, though, the AC87U is a clear winner.
Just purchased this router, can't wait to try it out! Appreciate the time and effort you put into unboxing and reviewing it!
I never thought a high-end router would make SO MUCH of a difference. My wife thought I was crazy spending $400 on a router, but she quickly changed mind as soon as she experienced the benefits this monster brought to our network. This thing is EXTREMELY fast and powerful and it nicely covers every nook and cranny of my 2,000 sq.ft. home, plus front and back yards. I no longer need wifi boosters (they were a major PITA...) This is definitely what you want if you need to stream 4K video, Steam games and any other thing that requires streaming a high volume of data. Make sure all your devices can handle 802.11ac for the best experience (yeah, it does make a hell of a difference.) Oh, and the software is just perfect: super easy to install and a ton of features (every parameter on every connected device can be individually controlled!), including the ability to create and micro-manage guest networks. The cherry on top of this delicious cake is the smartphone app. Now you don't even need a computer to modify/adjust things on your network.
Thanks for the video Vince! I'm new to wifi routers and not sure what to get. This video helped me a lot!
There is a new FW update on the Asus site, FW-.838. Installed it last week and all is good. Honestly the initial FW worked fine. Addressing your WiFi, you might want to do a wfif scan and see if you have overlapping signals from your neighbor and wither set them to a fix channel. The AC 3100 has been a rock solid performer and I have a very challenging large home environment. It compliments the AC3200, that will now become a bridge. The 88U is another great router as well, but the 5300 has (2) 5ghz bands which is helpful!!!!!!
Vince, I am planning on buying this and reading reviews on different sites and at Amazon reviews, Asus asked one of the owner to name each band differently and see which band is causing the issue. You may want give it a try and see if one of bands are not functioning as expected.... just a thought... and good luck..
I've had the Asus RT-AC2400 router for over a year now, and I spend 2-3 times per week, rebooting it. It looses the 5Ghz band regularly, and will shut down internet entirely on the network, until reboot. I have updated the firmware, as often as they come out with a new version. As of late, I've had to get the updates directly from the Asus site, as the GUI does not show the router needing an update. This thing is a beast......when it works. But somehow, I still want the 5300, despite all the issues I've had! I'd love to hear of your experience, after some time with this new one, Vince!
i have a asus tm-ac1900 router i got through t-mobile in the basement as my main then i have my older rt-n66r in my room on the main floor then on the top floor i have the rp-n53 range extender i dont have any issues drop off or anything
hmm I just bought the nighthawk version AC5300,and don't really think it's signal broadcasting is worth the steep price ,so what do you think the signal strength of this particular model of ASUS
I am surprised to see that out of your all reviews you have vouched for RT-AC87U. I have different experience with RT-AC87R (I have R version not U). As far as I understand between U and R there is no hardware changes but only marketing channel difference. Anyways, mine has significant issues such as dropping ISP speed and unstable 2.4Ghz connection. Been looking for a replacement for a while. Recently tried AC-5300 and it was a disaster after firmware update. Sticking to AC87R for now. Ordered AC3100 and waiting.
Asus AC5300 RT-AC5300 Router Unboxing & Setup
is what the title says, are there any good setup videos? my old router has the phoneline connector but my ROG Rapture does not... really lost here
did you enable beamforming from the advance setting .
I'm kind new to Asus so you need a dsl modem to setup the Asus?
can i use it from 200m distance ? plz kindly inform me .
Asus released an "Alpha" FW for the MU- MiMo, it's in testing phase. You can email them for the FW : )
for the areas you aren't getting the best reception take the older router put in repeater mode then put it in those areas
Excelente video, like arriba. Saludos.
so what's the verdict on the router?
Have you ever tried wifi repeaters? And maybe one of your problems is that you have 50 devices connected which seems to me like that's a lot lol
It is lol.
I have this roster and I don't why it only gives me 14 mbps download and 13 upload and the internet that i have in my house is LTAdvance
Had it for over a year
your video said and set up liar
it says unboxing and setup where is the setup ?
so basically you connect this to your internet and this router makes it faster???
My 3100 performs amazing. I get 120 mbs within the 5ghz range.
I have one of this but I don't use yet
Good info. Work on your audio levels and quality.
you are a very lucky guy... um waiting for this in Ukraine.
my antennas on mine won't stay up they are all very loose anybody else..
video sux, no set up and unboxing means unboxing everything, including the power adapter to see the voltage.
Even with the 8 antennas the signal isn't as strong??
+Marcus U (Maddog707) I can't explain it. Even in our bedroom which is directly above the room with the router, I drop to 2 out of 3 bars on my phone sometimes, where as with the AC2400 I never once drop below 3 bars on my phone. Very interesting. I'm wondering if a firmware update will help in the future, but for now the AC2400 is still superior.
+Vince Cantrell And both are on 5ghz ?
2.4 ghz has a larger range, 5ghz has more speed
+Marcus U (Maddog707) Depends on the receiving hardware and the number of Antenna it has. In devices with limited wifi ability like the radios found in phones antenna orientation is more important. A horizontal antenna connects better to another horizontal antenna so the vertical antenna placement of this router makes it less compatible with phones which tend to use horizontal antenna.
+Vince Cantrell There was an increase in speed with this router not range. An AC1900 router will do you just fine.
+Vince Cantrell This is very strange indeed. Especially if you are talking about 5GHz range as the Asus RT-AC87 / AC3200 have received a lot of complaints due to the awkward Quantenna 5GHz chipset it uses instead of the regular Broadcom ones that Asus normally uses for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz NIC's.
They were simply forced to insert a third-party NIC for the 5GHz in this model due to Broadcom delaying their 4x4 MU-MIMO chipset and Asus really wanted the Asus RT-AC87 / AC3200 to boost this feature in order to market it as improved compared to the Asus RT-AC68 / AC1900 in terms of "bragging points" on the retail box and in their marketing.
This have caused some real drawbacks though, as Asus now relies on getting wireless drivers from Quantenna instead of their regular good retail connections they've got with Broadcom and there are all kinds of reports about the 5GHz on the RT-AC87 / AC2400 preforming really lackluster and all kinds of various issues with 802.11d and Apple devices for instance. Many customers have also complained about the complete lack of advanced, or "Professional" as Asus is naming them in their Web UI due to the limited wireless drivers from Quantenna stripping customers from having access to the same amount of tools and customization as they are used to with these routers.
But that's only about the 5GHz NIC of the router, everything else is regular Broadcom hardware and comes with the same feature set as one expects from Asus top of the line routers. So if you are only using the 2.4GHz you wouldn't really be affected by any of this.
Most users consider the previous Asus RT-AC68 / AC1900 to be superior to the newer RT-AC87 / AC2400, especially in-terms of the 5GHz performance and reliability. I've gone through Asus RT-N66, RT-AC66, RT-AC68, RT-AC87 and RT-AC3200 and the RT-AC87 was simply the worst in terms of 5GHz connection of the bunch.
But when it comes to the newer models I have to agree, I've found them to have some firmware bugs and there has been no real performance increase that I have noticed. So I'm back on the RT-AC68 / AC1900 which seems to offer the best combination of tried and true firmware and great performance. And the price points of some of the newer models are simply ridiculous for no noticeable increase in performance or anything.
What the hell, how many people live in your house?
Thank you for your explanation. Now I'm able to unbox the product and screw some parts in the proper place. Are you for real ???
I would install Merlin on that
The AC88U and AC5300 have the same exact radios and drivers so you will not see any difference until future firmware updates.
How often do they release these updates?
Will it be a big difference after the update between this and the 88u/3100?
+Jrion they are both the same router except the AC5300 has an additional radio on the 5GHz band.
JayzBeerz How many devices can they hold per band if I may ask?
+Jrion as many as you want. I have 50 devices connected to my AC88U. Remember all won't be transmitting data at the same time. head over the small net builder website for info and reviews of these routers. they are nothing special over an AC1900 router.
Tp link archer C3200 is probably better.
way to not show the set up and mislead in your title.
should have been made clearer how to get it out of the box..... LOL !
bruh
Didn't set up SHIT
