- Update December 2015: After extensive testing of the AC3100 ( • Asus AC3100 RT-AC88U /... ) and the Asus AC5300 ( • Asus AC5300 RT-AC5300 ... ) the Asus AC2400 RT-AC87U (the router in this video) STILL outperforms its new $300 and $400 counterparts. This router is by far the best consumer router in the market still to date.
Update November 2015: Check out my unboxing and setup of the successor to this router, the Asus AC3100 RT-AC88U:
• Asus AC3100 RT-AC88U /...
Update Fall 2014: After EXTENSIVE testing of all these routers: Asus AC87U, Netgear R7000, Netgear R8000, Apple Airport Extreme, and the Linksys WRT1900AC routers, EVERY router had issues with 20 wireless clients and 15 wired clients (two being media servers).
RESULT: At the end of the day, the ONLY router that did not fail, slow, or need to be rebooted daily was the Asus AC87U. Note that it's only stable when using the latest firmware, which doesn't show up under auto-update yet, and must be downloaded directly from Asus's support website. With this firmware, though, it is the most stable router of all of them by far, and has not even hiccuped after 6 straight days of use with no reboots. Definitely buy the AC87U.... it's the best consumer on the market.

One of those exciting moments where I get to do an unboxing of a retail purchase two days before it's scheduled to be released.
Incidentally, can't yet register it since it's not even listed on Asus's website... downsides of jumping the gun a bit.
My understanding is that the U and R versions are the same, and that the R version is just the retail version. This is the R version but it should be the same as the AC87U. We skipped most of the online dashboard since it's not unique to the AC87 vs. other Asus routers.
Great review. Have you compared it yet with the Asus AC3200?
Great review, how is the AC87U holding up?

6 straight days? How about 30 days or 60 or 90 or a year? I need a robust pro-consumer / enterprise solution that will last a couple of years of CONSTANT use. For my home.
Jim Armstrong All is well a month later. Remember that all other comparable routers couldn't hold up for a day on our network.
Is it possible to have 2 routers on the same network. I already have bt infinity can you use two completely different network types in one house such as bt infinity and asus ac2400 rt ac87r or is this not possible.
So has the other routers drop wireless signal? I'm looking into a wireless router that does 802.11ac. It seems like the ones that I'm looking at, like the Nighthawk, and some of the other ASUS routers. People have been saying it'll drop wireless signal. I would love to find a reliable wireless signal.
Why on earth would you run so many clients on a consumer level router? Jesus, get some better hardware.
Look at Cisco or Mikrotik products.
Whoa! Awesome ISP. Hook me up Vince Cantrell. Those speeds I definitely need in a home network. Running online gaming on both pc and consoles, several hdtvs and tablets watching online movies plus a smartphones gaming/videos bogs down the network.
Seriously though wickedly awesome speed performance. This is definitely the next upgrade router.
I am getting a new router soon, specifically this one, but I am seeing both good and bad reviews. Tons of bad ones due to 5Ghz wireless connection drop. HaDid you experienced this aswell? Did Asus released updated firmware to addressed such issues? Thanks!
Hi, I'm from Mexico. One question, do you think this router is still recommended? and also what is the main difference between the RT-AC87R and the RT-AC87U??
I'm having difficulties with this router. I hooked it up to a Verizon modem/router hybrid to boost the signal and it was being a pain. I called Asus two times and waited on the phone for over half an hour before the call was dropped. I have also tried to open a case on their site only for a window to pop up telling me that the connection to server failed.
Do you think it is possible you can help me?
Hi, Any issues since the unboxing? Will you be posting an update?
May i know what's the box size for that router. Because i'm planning to buy it and put it in my bag when travelling back by train
Can this connect to a modem wirelessly or does it have to connect through an ethernet cable?
I'm about to go get mine today... No one else but Best Buy is the only store currently selling this Router, this is the most advance router today... It's a no brainer, if you're looking for a router just fo ahead and buy this one, you won't regret it. Asus is a quality brand, their products are top of the line!
What hardware revision (hw rev) you have ? A1?
So, which of the new AC routers do you like the best for throughput and speed? Favorite?
whats ur internet service
i actually went to buy the new Linksys router and found this AC2400. 20$ difference and bought the Asus.
Guys I'm having issues with getting my TS server up with this router. I host one for my friends and I to use off my computer. Once I got this one up and running I've tried everything to get my server up and running and nothings worked. I've tried using DMZ and port forwarding..I just cant figure these settings out lol. Any suggestions?
which one is better ac87u or netgear r7500? im confused
Hey on ur one video of u farming hyperious can u make one for my lvl 72 op8
so is this one better or the asus ac3200 thats coming out
I have an apple airport extreme and was excited to try the ac87u. After set up, I was very disappointed as several of my favorite websites either could not load or was extremely slow on loading. There were parts of my home that had a very poor signal with the Asus, but had a strong signal with the apple.
I'm returning the Asus back to Best Buy and hooking up the apple back up. Am I the only one having theses issues or does anyone else have similar experiences.
Is the CPU BCM4709?
does it works great with Verizon fios internet
Have ddns client?
What do you internet provider?
There are no more issues with the NETGEAR R8000 since the last firmware update (1.0.0.90). I have been using it for 5 days straight and have had no issues whatsoever. No dropouts and the WiFi signal strength to all of my wireless devices in a solid 5 bars throughout my 2-story home (w/basement). I own both the NETGEAR R8000 purchased and installed on 17 July) and the Asus AC87U, which I just bought today. I wanted to see which technology works best for my setup; 5G XStream (Netgear R8000) or MU-MIMO (Asus AC87U). I am also waiting for some official hardware reviews to be released soon. Only time will tell which of these two is the better router. Asus will also be releasing a 5G XStream router called the AC3200. However, Asus has stated that the AC87U is the higher end model.
Please let me know when you do the comparisons and reviews... I have an R8000 as well in hand, brand new... I'm just holding off on opening it because I think I'm happy enough with the RT87R that I will likely just keep that. Supposedly, MU-MIMO technology makes the AC2400 actually faster than the R8000... but I haven't seen a side by side yet. Would love to see it when you get one.
I need to do some homework and find out which benchmarks to use in order to fairly compare and accurately test the two routers. I am very happy with my R8000 and haven't opened up the RT-AC87R box yet as I'm waiting for complete hardware reviews :-)
So between the R8000 and this, which one has a better performance and stronger signal?
This one supports 4 connections simultaneously with new technology called MU-MIMO, so technically it's faster than the AC3200 routers like the Netgear R8000. However, the R8000 has an extra radio so who knows which one will be better. Time will tell.
@@VinceCantrell it's been 7yrs, what's the verdict?
Nice video, thanks. And here I thought I had fast internet (400Mbit/400Mbit) :(
you have incredible internet speed :)
im geting the asus ac3200 when it comes out in a month or 2
Why do a speed test with a wired connection? It's a gigabit port.... the interesting part of this is the wifi performance. Please include test results of a wireless AC capable device
Using a latest generation MacBook pro, download speeds were 550Mbps Down and 350Mbps Up
Vince Cantrell Thank you for the response. I was doing a little light research and found that might just be the maximum of the MBP wifi card? Do you think this is true or do you think it was as fast as the router could handle wirelessly?
Anthony Adkins Likely it's the MacBook's wifi card. I've seen reports that the AC wireless can do much better than even 550.
Show!!
What is a gadget on 6:59 ???
SuperSharwood Panamax Surge Protector, $100ish at Best Buy
my speed is 50 download speed and 30 in upload heck yhe and wth my wireless usb wifi on my pc it 10 up and down
How do you get 900+/-mbps speed?
We have pretty awesome internet... and it's not Google ;)
Vince Cantrell Verizon FIOS or VPN setup with a local server?
Dan K EPB Fiber Optics
Vince Cantrell Chattanooga, Tennessee? "Gig City"
thang nguyen If all you're using it for is sharing internet ..then it's probably overkill, but not everyone has such a limited use for their router.
I cannot see anything
Woah did I hear them say it's terrible when you can only get 500mb of internet? I only get 6mb and it's now the year 2016... Come on now.
what the hell, i have this router! i just bought it from Best buy, its not supposed to be released? lolwut
Haha it releases Monday, July 21 I believe
Vince Cantrell Actually, 20 July was the official release date that Best Buy was supposed to put it on the shelf for consumers to purchase. However, Best Buy made a mistake and had them on the shelf in the middle of last week...Oops! Asus was NOT happy...lol
Dan K this is probably a stupid question, but why is Asus not happy? I bought it, consumers are buying it, $$$ for them :D i love this router! But, then again i probably know one of the answers.... Final firmware not ready yet, the router itself not on Asus site, and so on.... What gives?
BodethIII It has to do with the contractual agreement between Asus and Best Buy which includes when a product is allowed to be released to the consumers. Asus sets a specific sale date in order to ensure their technical support is prepared to provide customer care for the AC87U/R product.
Price in € ?
EUR 209,90 (amazon.de)
your ping is 1?! Fudge!
how would i achieve that?
A router should be placed at least 4 feet above the floor. Why is yours on the floor? That's a no go dude and why you have bad wireless performance. Signals drop not rise.
We're using a router with a 5,000 sq. ft. range in a 2500 sq. ft. house, I think we'll be okay lol - We're also getting better reception downstairs by tilting the outer two antennas at a 50 degree angle.
+Vince Cantrell translation: you just didn't know any better.
I was looking for someone to point that out.
Asus my wallet loves you..... ^_^
