These routers levels are over 9000! Probably as close as youll ever get to full blown ROG madness in a wireless router. www.overclock3d.net/reviews/sy...
Someone may have already said this, but there are wall mount holes on the underneath, close to the rubber strip at the back of the router, there are two rubber caps. Dig those out and the you should see the mounting holes.
Hello Tom, your review on these is spot on except for one small detail. I have had the Asus RT-AC88U for a month or so and it is wall mountable. Towards the top of the bottom 2 of the small rubber feet that look like vertical slots with a round center are removable so you can hang it. I have mine hanging on the wall behind my desk. My wired connection is 126 MBps down and jumped to 22 MBps up from 10 MBps on my old Asus 66 model.
I have the Rapture GT-AX11000 ROG version of this and RT-AX88U as the mesh system in my house, the AX88U can be wall hung those rubber feet come up and you can mount it to the wall, I have it mounted up on the wall in the middle of my house in my Mrs' make up room behind her ring mirror light thingy, these two put together are amazing. My house is big, and you get full signal out past about 3 doors down. I have a full aluminum gate that can't be seen thought and have a wireless camera door bell mounted on a solid brick fence and it gets signal 80% signal strength and that is mounted about 20m though multiple walls and another folding solid garage door. The features on these two, plus the new ROG version is unreal I have link aggregation to my Qnap and also the same link aggregation on my internet as here is Australia the fastest internet you can get at present is 100/40 on the cable area's. So I have 2 100/40 connections set up as bonded but you can set it up for failover with a second connection or a 4G dongle plugged into one of the USB ports or load balanced. Best stuff on the market. The cost is up there to buy these two but they are both WIFI 6 ready and the features and what you can get in enterprise gear. For hard core gamer's you can set links the your gaming severs and press the boost button on the side on and it sets the QoS to your gaming servers as the highest priority. I highly recommend them, most of the JB HiFi's and Harvey Norman's don't even stock them and have to specially order them, well at the time I was buying the AX11000 ROG Asus had it to them the next day. Best money I ever spent HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Wonderful review. Thank you for taking the time to do the review / and the write up. I am sold on one of them. How about a review of the Netgear Nighthawk X8 - This seems to be a beast of a router as well.
If you get an Asus router, I would recommend that you flash it with the AsusWRT Merlin firmware. It looks exactly like the stock firmware but with a lot of useful features added on! I have it installed on my AC66U and I love it!
I very much like that you review these things too, you probably have made me buy an ac88u :) you do an absolutely bonkers good job :D and by the way you say "router" correct :)
great info and video. ill will be getting this rapture ac5300 for the great range and the fact we have so many devices trying to use the stock modem/ built in router that looks like a vcr. This will help boost everyone's wifi in the house.
I went with the 3100 because the bang for buck. it reaches all over the house, but i will need a node for the very far end of the house. This video was a big help.
Wow great review Tom, was a bit sniiffy thinking you'd be out of your depth but how wrong was I? Learned a lot thanks. Off to investigate it my switches can link aggregate.
I just ordered the RT-AC88U which should be delivered soon. ON your comment about it not being able to be mounted on the wall, all you have to do is remove the top rubber feet that look elongated with a circular bit.. those are just covers really for the screw mounts. The round bit is where the screw heads poke through then sort of slide on to secure the router to the wall.
Just subscribed.sir I have been looking for a comparison of both of these routers for a long time thanks for the info.cnet said if you don't have 10 wireless devises connected at the same time the 88u is the route to go.your review sounds a bit different to buy the 5300 instead.
Fantastic Review ---- I wonder a comparison between the ac5300 and the onhub. I need range - According to most reviews I have seen of the onhub it is beating $1000 ubiquiti routers at Distance covered.
The new app they now have published that works with a lot of their routers, and more is on the way, among others, their RT-AC66U is supported, I have that, is excellent. So easy to control and manage the router through whatever device you use the app on.
i have this 88U and the rubber (not feet as you called them but the other too close to the "back" 2 antennas. right and left side of the id/FC clerification and all this, you can take the rubber stuff out and you can hang it on the wall.
Agreed. totally enthralled with the review. So you are suggesting the ac5300 for apartments with thick walls? I have a small flat but lots of thick walls so WiFi signal from the asus ac1200G+ in the living room disappears by the time I am in one of the farther bedrooms. Do you think the ac3100 or 88u is strong enough for thick walls? Thank you.
As an AC5300 owner, I just wanted to clarify a couple things..... Firstly, the 192.168 IP address may work for the router login, but what is recommended in the directions (yes, I read them!) is to use router.asus.com Secondly, the Link Aggregation ports on the AC5300 are ONLY ports #1 and #2. I do not currently own a NAS, but in order to plan ahead to use Link Aggregation for that purpose, when I hooked up my main PC to this router, I used port #3. It may save a bit of head scratching later on :) I absolutely love this thing! I apologize if my above points were already covered, I did not have the time to read all the posts first.
Just to add to that I also have my MacMini running at 2.5gbps as that's the fastest port it has. I am guessing the next version will come with the 10gb ports for sure!
have you used the tplink archer d9? is the wireless range the same as the archer d9 or is the ac5300 way superior with it's range in getting through concrete walls?
I am considering buying one of these routers primarily focusing on range and quality of service.... Will there be any improvement of wireless connection stability with any of these routers and of wired connection as well? As for range will the routers be good for 2000 sqft no walls? I'm approximating for walls as my home is less than that by a margin. I need a stable connection with minimal packet loss which i seem to currently have. Speed does not matter to me. I'm inclined to the rt 5300 due to a low price difference in my country of residence. Will also be great if any owners tell of quality control details( specifically overheating as i have read about it on some reviews). Thanks.
Can someone help.. Where would be the best location to place a router? I bought the 100mbps from comcast and I need signal to my downstairs TV to stream 4k video and my computer which is upstairs and is located direct opposite end of the house from the tv? Would it better sitting next to the tv or somewhere upstairs in the middle of the house?
Hi, can someone help me choose between the "Nighthawk X6" or the "Asus AC88u/AC5300". Which one would be better for a fairly large space with many walls and will deliver best performance with a fiber connection?
I current have the Asus RT-N14UHP and a 100Mbit Fibr connection and the average speed that I could get would only be around 30-70Mbit... The distance between the router and my desktop is around 25-30ft. If I get this router, will the connection improve?
My AC 87R is over powered as hell and I have 15 connected devices. Almost all of them wireless. Gaming, VoIP, multiple 4K Netflix and Amazon streams in a 3500 sq feet house...it does it all. So if you're buying the AC88U for "a few devices" then you're freaking crazy.
crees que me sirva para un cyber gaming y que ventajas puedo obtener a diferencia con el que me regalan la compañia. si mejora el lag, puedo controlar para que 1 maquina no se robe todo el internet para ella sola?
Actually I want to know if I can reduce TX/Rx power for the wifi on my AC88u to be a better RFI cloud citizen, and reduce virtual competition with my neighbors' routers.
I want an advice if someone could give. I live in a two storey house (bricks and concrete). I got the 5300 but unfortunately it didn't give coverage on both floors so now I need another. Can someone suggest an Asus Dsl modem / router to replace my stock modem (ground floor) that will complement the 5300 (on first floor) with performance?
I need one of those for my gaming and steaming because my current router is doing the job still causes lag spikes and buffering on videos especially when trying to stream on beam or twitch because having that would really help with streaming games and with new games coming out It would help with streaming the new games but unfortunately I don't know how to get my hands on something like that
I would love to take the AC5300, mount it on the wall, and do some custom work that makes it look like its growing out of the wall and sucking energy from my house. lol
Great video. Can anyone help me? I have the AC87U and I get 200MB down on all of my devices on the 5GHz band but on the 2.4GHz band, the speed seems to be capped at 55MB. I've tried every channel and nothing changed but when I do the test on my laptop I get much higher speeds, it's just my mobile devices. Any advice would be appreciated. I will be subbing to your channel. Thanks Kevin
22:14 really made me laugh, brilliant! This channel is a one stop shop for tech AND parenting advise. One criticism: AC5300 costs £399! You should say that at the beginning of the video, before people get excited about this amazing router. I don't know anyone who can justify spending more on a router than what average person spends on a laptop that they keep for 3-4 years. My solution to crappy WiFi is to buy used dual band routers from ebay for around £16-£20 mark, wiring them to my network via ethernet and using them in access point mode around the house. This way I can patch all the "blindspots" where the main WiFi wouldn't reach.
Nighthawk is crap because it's made by netgear. Had nothing but issues with netgear products, ESPECIALLY when I got a nighthawk model and it dropped the wifi often. And no, it's not because of interference, the router I have now is on the same channels AND has more range and has zero problems.
Router manufactures, can you please add Micro SD slot to ALL your upcoming routers as the Micro SD storage is in upwards of 1 Terabyte and growing. It is a lot more convenient to store data on tiny Micro SD card than a huge hard drive.
Tom, that's not a router. It's a router. Honestly... *shakes head* ... And lol, I want to buy that AC5300 just to piss off my girlfriend. Big shame it doesn't have the 8 ports like the AC88u does. I don't want to have to compromise! I checked smallnetbuilder's review (he's basically an engineer) and in the review, he states that you basically receive no benefit unless you have 3x3 and 4x4 devices and you won't see any better performance with dual band devices unless you're using a lot of them. Oh and on top of that, MU-MIMO support isn't even out of the alpha phase of testing. Also, it's £400.
+Kael Just to add, here's a quote from smallnetbuilder: "Tri-band and MU-MIMO don't improve rangeNeither "tri-band" / Smart Connect nor MU-MIMO contain technology designed to extend range. Both are primarily designed to improve total bandwidth use.MU-MIMO routers requires MU-MIMO devices and only improve throughput for 5 GHz downlink (router to device) and strong signals. You need at least two MU devices to see any benefit and you get the optimum throughput gain with 3 MU devices."Tri-band" (actually tri-radio) routers work with all devices and work up and downlink. They use two 5 GHz radios so slower devices can be directed to one radio, faster devices to the other. "Smart Connect" technology is supposed to automatically direct devices to the proper radio. But many devices don't like being told what to do and stubbornly stay on a radio, slowing down faster devices. "Unless you live in a house with a lot of people hammering the Wi-Fi, you're very unlikely to see any real world performance improvements.
If you have a country house and have a bunch of people over - say 15-20 - can this be setup to do bandwidth limitations, say, just for 2.4 Ghz? That way residents can be on 5 Ghz and have max bandwidth and guests are limited (mainly because of bastard Apple services trying to update etc)?? cheers legend
Depends what those 15 / 20 people are trying to do. Your internet could be a bigger issue than these and then you have possibly problems from thick country house walls etc. Too many variables to be able to give you a proper answer sadly.
Have ever experienced issues with it sir? I've heard a ton of complaints about this two routers and also the AC3100 about bad 2.4 GHZ connection drops and random disconnects.
So I live in the Yorkshire Dales, rural as hell. Not much chance for fibre or a better line being in place. Get about 7mb/s overall. Live with 7 other people, all with 2+ devices..if I bought one of these routers would it help performance? Or would I still get terrible ping in games+video buffering times?
I might have to invest. Moving into a student house in September in Lincoln with far too many people for a standard Sky router so this router might be a necessity. Already using a Cat5e cable, but I'll take your advice and use Cat6 when/if I get this router!
I am Hong Kong internet user and RT-AC88U route via optical fiber connected under 300M.But I feel still not fast enough, I planned join another ISP running 1000M internet connection and plug & connect their connections together within RT-88U. "I looking for my home local connection speed is too much faster than before (~= 1G + 300M)." Is it true for nearly alive for my case? Or, my idea is false within running on my AC88U router.? If my thinking is true for running on my ASUS RT-AC88U router, how to made it set their firmware/software and set up its works for right wire connections?
For my connection set it up successfully and works on my idea speed as fast as I thinks via wires connections. But it still works on WiFi connection and still surf with the same/nearly same speed?
Hi guys, I bought Asus RT-AC5300 and RT-AC68U, but their 5GHz WiFi speed (AC5300 and AC68U) are very slow than 2,5GHz. Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.384.81622 (2020/02/21). Why should I do? Downgrade the firmware?
The money they have been charging for home routers is amazing. They don't even include vpn over v-lan in a device that is designed for multiple connected users. I'd rather spend a few pounds more and get a draytek or any other smb class device with actual feature's you want.
The other one should be connected to a cabled network then. Wireless repeaters should be banned i my opinion, people are clueless about how they work and they end up with poor performance.
better off with PFSENSE and setting up packet shaping so to rents get pushed back for higher priority traffic just like Web surfing. That way video, games, and VOIP get first dibs on bandwidth. When configured correctly, it is transparent to useres. You can also block stuff if you desire. IP, MAC, ports, what ever you fancy. PFSENSE is about 100 times, if not more, more configurable then any consumer router will provide. And you can build a monster enterprise class setup for what the spider router costs. lol
+Kurt Phillips Nothing a couple really good AP's can not take care of. Add powerline ethernet if normal cables are not an option and you can make it better then a standalone unit.
Someone may have already said this, but there are wall mount holes on the underneath, close to the rubber strip at the back of the router, there are two rubber caps. Dig those out and the you should see the mounting holes.
Jon Bountalas Now I need a way to color it white so it blends in with the ceiling.
Hello Tom, your review on these is spot on except for one small detail. I have had the Asus RT-AC88U for a month or so and it is wall mountable. Only Tom can make a 30 minute router review interesting.
He could reduce it down to 10 mins, easily.
He is so good at explaining !! Awesome video
Love the 'mates in a pub having a chat' type review. Well done. Refreshing.

Great job with reviews as always , very thorough and Lonnnnnnnnnngggggggggg :P . Keep up the good work
That ain't no router that's the temple of fucking NOD
Wonderful review. Thank you for taking the time to do the review / and the write up. I am sold on one of them. How about a review of the Netgear Nighthawk X8 - This seems to be a beast of a router as well.
I dont have any contacts at Netgear sadly
buy it?
I'm sure he'd appreciate you buying him one to try out.

Tom.I love your videos mate. You have the common touch
Your video is pretty Interesting on review and sharing! Keep it up
Love AiMesh using the AC88U with 2 AC86U works great having about 25-30 devices running on it 😁👍
brilliant review. thank you
Great comprehensive review! thanks

hi sir,
thank you for good reviews about a both of router's, i want to know how much range it's giving for the each router's.
Thank you
Mohammed
Wow great review Tom, was a bit sniiffy thinking you'd be out of your depth but how wrong was I? Learned a lot thanks. Off to investigate it my switches can link aggregate.
Got the AC5300. Absolutely amazing. High price tag but you do get a lot for your money.
Awesome review, thanks!
Very nice review....Made me decide...Earned a sub...Thanks

Bravo good sir. bravo.

Hi and great informative video! Will the ac88u work on an isdn line?
Thanks for the review, I have been eyeing up an Asus router for a while.
excellent review.... now i have to go buy that AC5300 router to upgrade from my crappy old netgear router
well done. just subbed and bought the 5300. Now I just need a USB3 flux capacitor....

hi may I grant your permission to share this video in my fb and my groups. Awesome guidance on routers. Kudos to you bro.
As long as you link to my video on YT then yes thats fine dude - thank you

Your laugh after "bandwidth limitation" caused me to click the "like" button immediately.
What modem did you use with them, or rather what do u recommend. Currently have 40meg VDSL line
Just to add to that I also have my MacMini running at 2.5gbps as that's the fastest port it has. I am guessing the next version will come with the 10gb ports for sure!

I still like to see some Speed Tests..
Would this be overkill for my 40meg connection?
I need info about modem/ router combination
Compare these routers to the Google onhub and the D-Link DIR-895L/R. Out of those 4 routers, which one do you think the best?

it might just be your streaming settings..... :/
I know this is a old video and I have both of these Routers. Which one was used as your main router in your mesh set up?
Does this router have fiber modem built in? As in one can ditch the bt modem and just have one device..
any POE on those gigabit LAN ports?
which one is better?
Range of both routers please?
I cant connect outside my nas ( AC88u) how I can?
look like it was a DUST collector! too many holes cannot clean up XD, so when will ASUS include VOIP or all in one Fibre or SDSL product?
do you even antenna bro?

+Kael Just to add, here's a quote from smallnetbuilder:
"Tri-band and MU-MIMO don't improve rangeNeither "tri-band" / Smart Connect nor MU-MIMO contain technology designed to extend range.
There is an 8 port version if you REALLY want to get the 5300.
The one on the left looks like some kind of alien helipad lol
I love my ASUS GT-AC5300, faster quad core processor and double the memory of the RT-AC5300
But without any chance to use AsusWRT Merlin firmware
I want to see an Asus router mod that Tiny Tom mentioned.
Excelente video, pero puees subirlo en español. Así será más comprensible para los que somos del habla hispana.
+Jonah Pain The router wont magically make your internet connection better dude no.
+OC3D TV I can dream :( thanks!
+Jonah Pain what you need is an ethernet cable like cat 6 to support this beast router. You will feel the difference trust me
I might have to invest.
In case of my devices are supported 802.11 ac connections and no problems running on max speed connected speed for router.
the red tassel on his arm makes him very dainty don't you think
how the price. *sorry my english bad
I wonder if you can use the USB and use and external HDD and use is as a nas?
+Permafrost Yup, suported :)
looks like i need to do even more research :(
Hi guys,
I bought Asus RT-AC5300 and RT-AC68U, but their 5GHz WiFi speed (AC5300 and AC68U) are very slow than 2,5GHz. Firmware Version 3.0.0.4.384.81622 (2020/02/21). Why should I do? Downgrade the firmware?
Does Asus RT-AC5300 accept USB Internet Modem?
Another review said it does
can i use from 200m distance ?? couple of house is there and router is on the top of 40feet tower....
Ahhhhh dammit. I forgot to test this scenario.
OC3D TV can u tell the actual range of two router...?
I wish they have ad block feature
+Tukas Armanis (ubaldas UK) so every website would cost money because no revenue is generated by ads?
+Speedyjens one day you will pay for everything
+Speedyjens There was a time when websites didn't have ads at all. People are greedy.
+that1fatkiduknow +
+Speedyjens They should pay us to look at these ads!!
I have a Fibre to my property, is there a good modem router that has a fibre connection.
You should have got a modem to cope with that. Neither of these have a modem built in.
So I have a three-floor house. Can I buy 3 Asus AC5300, one for every floor, and combine them to one WLAN?
look up cascading router (lan to lan)
Thank you, will do that.
Could you ask someone over at ASUS, why my 5300, is... hiding 80% of my bandwidth? Great video!
I use both of these at home and Ive had no issues
I think I found the problem. The WAN port was only giving me half-duplex. Waiting for ISP's solution.
The money they have been charging for home routers is amazing. They don't even include vpn over v-lan in a device that is designed for multiple connected users. I'd rather spend a few pounds more and get a draytek or any other smb class device with actual feature's you want.
if i don't really need tri band but want the absolutely best performance, which one is better ? My house is huge
get two and set the other up as an AP
Get a Ubiquiti ER-X or USG and a few UAP-AC-PRO's and you'll have the best wireless on the planet.
The other one should be connected to a cabled network then. Wireless repeaters should be banned i my opinion, people are clueless about how they work and they end up with poor performance.
26:10 You are so evil! :D
So this router has built in blocking of P2P torrenting? How does it work exactly?
+alienxslayer Why would anyone buy a router that does that?
Uk Gamer to not get sued for copyright infringement because younger siblings torrent
***** vpn?
better off with PFSENSE and setting up packet shaping so to rents get pushed back for higher priority traffic just like Web surfing.
