  • Are ASUS Routers any good? Well today we review both the RT-AC5300 & the AC88U, and one which was very practical with 8 1gbps ports, Dual Band wireless and also a slim sleek look (The AC88U), the other had a strong wireless signal (The RT-AC5300), and had triband wireless, though it only had 4 1gbps ports, and did look a little 'out there' :P. Though this routers can do so much more than what I am used to with normal routers, and the QoS options are phenomenal. Also as mentioned in the comments you can link up Asus routers if you have more than one and use the AI Mesh feature - www.asus.com/AiMesh/

what a fucing rip offf this POS is , the worst router I have ever owned , the range is not even 3 feet for 2.4 ghz on this fucking pile of shit
an amazing feat since it has like 52 antennas where as the AC66u only had 3, and this rouuter manages to not even get 1/10th the range, what a bunch of bullshit this thing was, and a total wate of fucking money,

I agree completely about wanting 10gbe ports, something like the 88U with 2-4 10gbe copper ports and 6-8 regular gigabit would be wonderful. Netgear has the X10 router with a single 10gbe SFP+ port which is on the right path, but not implemented properly IMO. Right now 10gbe adapters are decently cheap (Asus XG-C100C for example is $128 CAD), it's just the switches that need to get cheaper. I use a pair of 10gbe SFP+ PCI-E cards with a direct attach cable right now between my server and gaming rig to allow those fast transfers, but obviously this isn't ideal.

I love Asus routers. I have the RT-AC68u for few years and it's just awesome. Even paired to a 1Gbps fiber internet.
As awesome as the Asus routers are, the first thing to do with them is to flash Merlin firmware. It is mostly the same as the original with few improvements.
Once flashed, it can do so much more and much better thanks to enteware-ng. though requires understanding of what and why.

I run the TP-Link SafeStream router and their enterprise grade APs, in mesh. I do have two Rouge outdoor APs not in mesh, but they are directional and only 2.5Ghz and used to beam wireless though my 17 acre feild behind my house, so I never loose signal when I'm mowing. You can't compare entry level TP-Link to their enterprise grade stuff. My entire network was probably 1/2 the cost of those Asus units and has better load balancing, which is needed for people like me with a large network but low bandwidth ISP (10D/5U), and I have coverage over our entire 17 acre main lot.

Yeah, Asus has taken over the king of the router title from Linksys awhile back. Especially with the popular AC68U. And you didn't even talk about the very popular 3rd party firmware Asuswrt-Merlin, that many users like to flash, giving you even more user control functionality. Merlin actually helps out Asus, because they actually find and patch exploits, as well as employ fixes to problems, months before Asus does. It's, dare I say? Magical.

    Asus RT-3100, here:
Strong and fast wireless (700+ Mbps Internet download speed on gigabit home service and a bit faster network transfer speeds).
Full gigabit wired speeds (980Mbps recorded, 940 Mbps typical).
Frequent updates, some of which have broken some edge features but are usually pretty quickly fixed.
Very reliable. I think in the... ~18 months I've owned it I had to reset it once.
This is all in stark contrast to my Cisco/Linksys and Netgear routers (4 total) all of which A) couldn't handle gigabit traffic, tapping out at ~550Mbps B) got maybe 2 updates and then abandoned C) had problems going through my concrete walls.

i was really excited and read many good reviews on the 88u, bought it after a week wireless features went out so wireless connections didnt work. I returned it and got a new one. after a month or so the 2.4 wireless connection went out and could only connect through 5g, sent it is for repairs they sent me a new one(about 3 weeks wait) . so far this new one is holding up and its been about 2-3 months. disappointed i had to go through so much just to enjoy my internet, read that the wireless features going out is a common thing though.
I will say asus support was awesome, had to call way to many times but each time they did try to help me the best they could.
overall i am content with the 88u and i even have the 88pci for my computer to connect wireless.

Those 2 (but in both black colors) and their latest RT-AC86U, I'm using since last year, then updated it early January, for AiMesh.

8 Ethernet ports (or even 6) is definitely something I want to see more on high end routers going forward. Sidegraded from the AC3200 to an 88u a while back purely for this reason.
Insane how Asus keeps the prices so damn high on their old routers though, instead of cutting the price when a new model supersedes, they just seem to bring new models out at even more astronomical price points. All we need now is some cryptonerds to come up with a specific custom router firmware/chipset based cryptocurrency mining on unused cycles so they can jack up these router prices even more.
Ps, ADSL/VDSL integration is the last thing you want on one of these as you won't be able to run Merlin.

Agree with Tech Deals on buying the best you possibly can!! I regretted going i5 6600k over the i7 sooo much as soon as I started playing bf1 multiplayer. It was an awful CPU for this game. Had to sell the i5 it was that bad in the game I loved to play turned into slide show on most maps.
Maybe if you only use the PC for certain games with no possibility of playing a future games i5 would be okay IMO.
Had it at 4.6ghz, all other games I played silky smooth though... Also I should have a got an i7 instead of 3570k as it would have lasted a lot longer. i7's held value a lot better than all the i5's abd MUCH easier to resell.

Merlin WRT helps for asus. Those two units are rather expensive for wifi routers.

Ok this might be a really stupid question but if you buy one of there routers do you still have to pay for them monthly or no (Ik I’m stupid pls don’t bully me)

The AC5300 isn't a router; it's some sort of weird tiny alien transceiver device that they're just calling a "router" for the sake of simplicity!

Is there any Benefit to delidding a x58 Xeon? considering how old the CPUs are the paste inside of them might be crumbs

Zoozki Isn't the ihs soldered on on that one? That means that there is no thermal paste which increases the heattransfer rate.

I've seen a couple of videos of people delidding some x58 Xeons so they can fit it into their Mac pros so I'm not totally sure
