Regarding the 0-60 test: I realized a couple things after filming this episode. The road I was testing on was slightly uphill, and the aftermarket wheel/tire combo skewed the MPH readings. Should've used GPS instead. In all likelihood the car is much faster than this video indicates. 😀
Should brake torque for max launch speed as well.
hi! what kind of disc style and what size?
With $3k ....feel like a Venture Capitalist !!! A good deal.
This channel is gonna blow up - excellent production quality.
I own a 1997 7series paid $5000 daily driven love driving it. Won't swap it for any other car 😎
My parents had a 1998 740iL. It was such a great car to go on long road trips. However, it would always have weird random gremlins and my parents let it sit and rarely drove it l in the past 10 yrs. they finally sold it to a whole seller for $800 w less than 100k mi. I still think it’s one of the best looking cars.
Long live the 90's! That is so much car for the money!
Tyson Hugie Yeah!!! Lots of great and underrated cars from this era.
I've bought an e38 just two weeks ago and fell in love with it. It's a luxury landyacht for pennies, and yet even though it lost 97% of its original value it still feels and looks like a premium car, a car for someone important. Sometimes I even have a feeling like I shouldn't be driving such a premium car... and that is so cool about it!
JGChannel Sweet, congrats on the new car purchase!! Yep even decades later it still feels like a top of the line cruiser.
Thinking of getting one lil very nervous though
Glad you got an E38. I own one myself but mine is a 2001 740i with the sport package. This means the I Sport has steptronic, 3.15 differential, higher stall speed torque converter (a lot quicker off the line), different gearing, lower front stance, stiffer suspension, Sport seats and....10-15 percent lower fuel economy. You would of felt the difference on the 0-60 take off. Bought mine about 4 months ago with 103k on the odo for 35 hundred. I guess we got lucky getting our hands on the best looking 7 series out there. Enjoy your ride!
Sounds like you got a great deal! I really do dig the 740i sport package. The E38 is one of the best looking cars BMW has designed. Thanks for watching! :)
That explains it, recently replaced my sport with a long wheel base and noticed it didn’t pull as fast or as hard
I purchased one of these for $300. The owner thought that the heater core had gone bad since it started to over heat. It turned out that we just needed to bleed out the air out of the cooling system since he had replaced the expansion tank. Great car.
This is my dream car
I bought a 95 and I love it. It doesn't run yet but just looking at it in the meantime while I fix it myself makes me happy. The design has aged so well over 25 years.
I found one for 1700 dollars and Idk if I should buy it or not
@@bradenforbes5177 You might just get lucky. The over all condition of the car will tell you a lot
You sir have class...
I have this car same color and 740il trim it was a gift from my grandfather
Great Review! I got a 1998 740il as my first car and I love it. it is really great for long trips. I already put about 35k miles and been really reliable so far.
How’s it been holding up?
You should try the 740i (short wheelbase) sports package version if you haven’t already. It feels so much smaller, it handles way less boat-like, and the 0-60 time on it is roughly anywhere from 5.6-6 seconds depending on what shape the car is in. I’ve owned my 740i for over 2 years now and it’s caused me little to no problems after sorting it all out and I only paid around $5k for it!
This needs waaaaay more likes. The ratio of likes to views is heartbreaking! Dig your video man and the behemoth BMW,
Many old cars I've bought have power outlets that don't work. Most of the time, it's just a blown fuse...Figure out where the fuse box is, check the diagram (that's usually on the box or the lid) to see which fuse is for the power outlet. Visually see if the fuse is busted, and if it is, pop in a new one (15 cents), or if you're lucky, there will be extra fuses attached somewhere in the fuse box area.
Yeah! Haven't checked yet but you're probably right-blown fuse is likely the culprit.
2:55 That is actually a compartment for a first aid kit! I've been reading over the owners manual.
My 95 sill has the original
My 2000 has the original kit, too
It's usual for any german car
The storage between the rear headrests was for a first aid kit. The tall storage cubbies in the rear doors were for sunglasses, hence the felt lining.
I had a 97 328i at one time. Always liked that era of BMWs. Well done on another good video.
Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed the vid. This era BMW is definitely my favorite in terms of design.
I booght a 1998 740iL in the same white + black trim + tan interior for $2,000 a few months ago and absolutely love it! I've put about $1,500 into minor repairs (new bulbs, hood/trunk struts, new radiator, fluid changes, etc.) With another $2-$3,000 to get it "perfect" for my liking with repairing the headlinder, new head+tail light housings, window tint, all new front and rear suspension arms and bushings, getting a new amp and headunit and all new speakers being the major ones. (Currently driving around with a bluetooth speaker in the backseat and every bump i go over I hear a squeak you should only hear in the bedroom. 😂) I've drove roughly 3k miles since I bought it and have had no issues other than I need to replace my crankshaft position sensors (throws code P0340 during heavy acceleration.) Besides Mr. Regular's video on the 7 Series, I think this may tie with it for my favorite E38 video! Enjoy it 😁
I have a 97 740i one with 221,000 miles original engine, transmisson, quality of this masterpiece machine is beyond everything works, sunroof and even interior hasn’t faded one of the best cars ever built Im in love with mines and how classic it is
I like that yours is white
Music 4TheReal hows it holding up there’s 1 for $2k with these miles I’m eyeballing
Put some bilstein shocks and struts on it and some better sway bars and that thing will hold the road quite well. Excellent canyon carver with a firmed up suspension. I loved mine. Of course, you'll be repairing it as much as you drive it. Under $3,000 is just the cost of admission if you want to keep it on the road. Can't wait until you have to replace the timing chain guides, drooping head liner, and other fun bits such as the entire cooling system, periodically. Transmissions may or may not operate correctly. Reverse may go out, uh probably will go out. Transmission fluid is like $15/quart. Self-leveling rear shocks are $500 ea. But if you're a committed E38 enthusiast, you'll overlook the wallet shrinking cost of parts and labor and let the driving experience heal the hole in your pockets. I now drive Lexus cars with Bilstein shocks and upgraded sway bars. Haven't looked back. Long live the G2 GS430. Faster than an E38 740I or IL. Infinitely more reassuring that you'll make it to your destination.
First video I've watched your contents quality. I'm subscribing
one of the best videos i've ever seen🙌🙌
The little storage on the top of the back seat is where the first aid use to be in
😊
Thx! I did finally figure that out after I shot this vid! :) :)
That's a score. Leathers in amazing shape.
Definitely, I lucked out. It's a fantastic ride.
that "weird little storage compartment" is where the original first aid went. Mine still has it. And the "useless pop-out storage area" was a spot for trash for the rear passengers only available for the 740il because of the long door.
I bought my single owner, 2000 BMW 740i m sport 5 days ago for $3,000. With steptronic transmission, and the dinan intake and tune that came with it, I don't think I'll ever drive a better car than an e38 sporty. 0-60 around 5 seconds
Yeah! Thanks for the insight. I knew that pop out storage area was specific to the long wheelbase but didn’t know the intention. Your car sounds super sweet! And for sure a lot faster than my E38!
Actually, the tallish compartment was for shades. Am looking at one here in Malaysia in 2021!
Loved the Graystone tour. Love the aerial shots.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! :) :)
When my dad turned 50 for his birthday he got it the same colour and year and he got it for $1200 and looked trashed then looked new again but black interior
SUNGLASES JUNIOR! BACK SEAT DOOR CMPTMENT
I gots me a 97 750i and I love it.
Got my 740il because of this video 😊
😀😀😀😀
Dreaming to own one in the future,i resently bought one E39
Excellent choice, Sir.
😃😄
Great episode. Great detail on the car, and an amazing job on the history of the mansion. I really enjoyed your tour of it. I love the car aspect and tour aspect you get going on a lot of your vids. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed this episode!! 😀😃😄
i just got one of these cars… it’s gonna take a while for me to restore it. the interior is a mess and parts are glued on. hope i can find one somewhere and get parts off it
Nice big back seat for lots of fun *smirk*
👀
Ok im in love with both the BMW and this mansion
I just got the insurance payout from someone hitting my car and totaling it... watching this video isn’t helping me make sensible decisions about a replacement :)
Bought a replacement Honda Element in the end!
Ah! You went with the sensible option!! 😄😀
Hello Road decided to also sell my 95 Miata so you never know might do something random if it sells!
I got this car after a crash
So... Regular Car Reviews and Donut Media AND Buzzfeed Unsolved true crime? Oh yeah, more please.
Hey, this my fav video so far. OK, a couple of things. I like your production quality and the way you use go pros to take multiple shots at once and the angles you use. I like the reviewing of normal, forgotten cars. We all like supercars, but we cannot afford them. So keep it down to earth. I like the weird combo of reviewing a car and visiting a place with that car. Its unusual, but it works. Feels like cruising around with friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon, visiting places and doing stuff. On that note, may I suggest, you can end every video with "reviewing" a street food for a couple of seconds (ice cream, donuts, noodles etc). This will add to the lazy Sunday experience. I wish you blow up and when you do, never sell out.
My first car was a 1985 Nissan Sunny , kinda looks like the Stanza Wagon, so if you could review that , that would be awesome. Handling and suspension was awesome, event with no hydraulic steering wheel, because it was so light. And the sweet light blue color was a trademark. This Sunny use to be a police car (!) here in Greece for the late 80s-early 90s, so you could visit a police station and compare it to the modern police cars or something.
Cool, thats all, keep it up
:) :) Really glad you're enjoying the vids! Thanks so much for your kind words! The '85 Sunny was the Sentra here in the states. Haven't seen that generation Sentra in ages. I'll definitely see if I can find one! Thanks again.
Ah, come on, you are doing a great job, keep pushing. Yeah, poor '85 Sunny/Sentra, another unsung hero. Those cars also disappeared here in Greece and in Europe in general. Anyway man, see you around.
Yeah great cars,my favourite 7 but I drive my favourite 5 so I'll stick with the E34 but only because of the price of fuel in the UK lol
Beautiful car - congrats. I wouldn't put those wheels on any vehicle though, especially on 7 Series BMW, even if I got them free.
Thanks!! I actually ended up selling the wheels. They were BBS RSII and were worth more than the car!
Can we get an hour long of those ending drone shots, you cruisin and some synthwave?
nice video... bc I drive one... 740i in black... Bj. 1997 ... bdw... nice music in your video, same playlists ? : ) thx
My mom have this car when I Born and it’s still with us working good my fix it every time
super clean car
awesome, love my 750. would love for you to test drive my '98 12cyl example. greatly equipped, but non-North American models got so many more cool features, particularly executive rear passenger features.
Thanks!! Would love to drive a 750, especially a non-NA version! Haven't had the pleasure of driving one yet.
My dad had this exact car in white when I was born. Damn brings back memories
Always happy to see a new video from you! Keep up the good work man!
Ben B. Thanks so much!! 😃😃😃
You should hit that leather with a Lexol treatment! They look like they could clean up perfectly! Love your content man.
Andrew Willson yeah good idea! Haven’t had a chance to really clean it up but I think that’s a great idea. Glad you’re enjoying the vids!! 🤗🤗🤗
Great film, I had a 728i over here in the UK a few years ago, lovely old cars although the 728i was a touch underpowered. Good look with the channel. We need Radwood in the UK!
Wow! Never knew that mansion existed. Reminiscent of Hearst castle.. sounds like a lovers quarrel\triangle to me how doheny and childhood friend died. Ahhh the wealthy...not immune to passions wrath or death.
Yep that's the conclusion that I came to as well!
Those other storage compartments on the door fit sunglasses.
Another great episode. Lots of Democrats were driving these to fundraisers too. :)
😀😀😀
Good price, but better engine is V12 - the 750 version. You'll see the big difference in the torque from 800 to 3000 rpm, in this range 750 is like jet airplane, in compare with 740, which is like agricultural aircraft. 750's saloon is more luxurious too.
"Better" yes, but even more un-reliable. The BMW factory rep volunteered that information in the early 2000's
The V12 is a far more reliable engine. Can easily hit 500K miles. No Vanos or timing chain guide issues.
The gain in performance over the V8 is insignificant. Your mileage is worse and the front gets heavier. I get that a V12 is cool, but the sweetspot is a nice 740i non L version.
@@caleidoo I don't disagree but wouldn't it be great if there was a short wheel base V-12 with manual transmission? That engine is good enough for modern rolls-royces.
The interior sat new standards back then..
I would be happy to buy one
There's plenty of smack dealers whom would love to boss up an roll up in this fly whip...👌🏼😎💯✔
More great videos like this with this beautiful e38 please.
I had one and sold it but I'll be getting another one soon hopefully
Will try to do a few more vids with this car! :) :)
The E38 will go down in history as BMW's greatest car made besides the M5 and the Mercedes 300D. Oh btw that wasn't a dougnut...that was a circle. Leave the doughnuts to RoadKill.
🤷♂️
Yeh and the e39 has to come a close second, hoping one day to have an e38,love my e39 3.0d m sport tourer, good daily,200,000miles in 10yrs no major probs at all, great vid man!,and hello from Scotland!!
So glad you picked one of these up. I recently purchased an 01 Highline package (George Lucas owns one) and I love the way BMW's of this vintage feel going down the road. I'll be in town in a couple weeks, and I'll be picking up an Audi S8. If you'd like to feature it on your channel, I'll be around all week..
Did you pick up that S8 yet?
Hello Road
I did! It broke down on me a couple times and got fixed just in time for me to leave town . :(
Hello Road
It did make the drive back to Kansas flawlessly though, so that was nice.
@@cbpldc Sorry we weren't able to connect while you were in town! Been a crazy few weeks. Glad to hear you were able to get it all the way back to Kansas!!
here is the thing wiz ze german caz. if they brake, oh baby, they are broken. thats it, they r dead. you have to do maintenance exactly when the manufacturer demands, not half a mile later or they brake down. japanese on the other hand...well run around with no engine oil for like six months before they politely suggest that something is wrong maybe.
Where do you people come up with this information from out of curiosity? Other UA-cam commenters who’ve never owned a German car? I’ve owned a good mix of American, German and Japanese cars and none have been much better or worse than the other.
American cars broke down the most, they were also the easiest/cheapest to fix.
Japanese cars, they are OK, not some modern marvel that can go 300k miles with no oil or maintenance though that UA-cam claims. Parts are more expensive than the american cars and they are relatively basic so there’s less to go wrong.
German cars, about the same as Japanese cars, just nicer and they have more things to go wrong. A bit harder to work on as they have more covers and panels keeping things hidden. Aftermarket parts are no more expensive than a Japanese car and are quite plentiful.
The caveat here is if you plan to rely on a dealer or some specialty shop to do all your repairs then yea it’ll probably cost more. Why wouldn’t it?
We’ve put a lot more money into keeping my wife’s Honda going than my Mercedes, both are about the same year and both have about 150k miles on them, before that she had a Lexus Is350 and that car, while very fun, cost a damn fortune every time It went in for service.
Also keep in mind in other countries they use Mercedes as taxis and use them like Americans use Crown Vic’s. They wouldn’t do that if they were constant money pits. Just do your due diligence when buying any car and know the common issues with the car.
Little disappointed that you didn't mention Greystone was used as Wilton Knight's house
Ethan! What a video! I don't think Spielberg could've done better. The music is sublime and the car is a yacht on wheels! I'm about to but the same exact one color and all for exactly 3k miles too, but it has only 112k miles and only 2 owners! I'd love to pick your brain. Let me know how I can reach you directly. Thanks for the gorgeous video!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Really glad you enjoyed the video! :) :)
the thing in the back is for you're glasses when people use to read the books there for the lights in the back
جميل جدا...لدي bmw 1996 ..سيارة رائعة وجميلة وتبقى صغيرة العمر ولاتكبر
I literally just glued on a bunch of plastic plate pieces in my dad‘s 1997 740 IL
3:02 now most people don't know this but you can put your weed in there
I have one Im from vzla Im looking for conecting rods, pistons and crankshaft.
If would very grateful if you help find that in a good price. Thank wait for your answer!
Nice video, but those 0-60 numbers should tell you something is wrong or it needs a tune up. I had a 1998 Lexus Gs400 (4.0 - V8) and i was still getting 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. The numbers are similar too... 300 hp compared to the 740 at 280hp
Turns out the road I was on had a pretty decent incline that I hadn't noticed. Should probably test it again!
He also started from the 4 th gear OMG
I so want 1 with e38 rims and the same color as the one in 'tomorrow never dies'
These are getting pretty inexpensive-you might be able to find one on the cheap!
I want one but I'm so scared of electrical gremlins
MrJackzon so far so good with mine! I have heard some stories but I’ve been lucky I guess!
I’ve got a 740i sport for 4 years now and no electrical gremlins that I hear people mention. These cars although complex in their day, fast forward 20 years and these cars are pretty basic in comparison to modern 7s!
that back seat comparment is missing a medical kit.
in my opinion i personally disagree with him on the car feeling slow or like driving a huge car the e38 740il drives and feels no different to my moms nissan versa other than the 740il is more comfortable it doesn’t feel like a huge car at all driving down the road and im only 19 i own a 1995 bmw 740il
Nice 5s
Sad it has such a dark history
did you burn your clutch during that "donut"? lol :D
It's an auto! So no! :) :)
You did wrong the 0-60 test . Gearbox was on 4 th gear, you should do it from 1st gear :)))))
Dropping down to 4th puts it in 'Sport' mode, which still automatically shifts through all the gears. I did try shifting manually but Sport mode ended up being faster!
How many miles on it when you bought it? Looks super clean tho..
It had about 210k on it!!
@@HelloRoad Wow! Still looks super nice and hopefully the previous owner(s) already dealt with the timing chain issues.
I always thought the L was "Limousine" :)
Simon Prickett it very well could be!!
The L stands for long not for limousine. The normal e38 is 14 centimeters shorter than the Long version. However if you are really looking for the "Limo" version check out the L7 version of the E38. Hope i helped you ;))!
Hi buddy....your glasses.are Oliver peoples???hi from.mexico...nice car...
Pretty sure they are Vans sunglasses. Don't remember the model name though :)
@@HelloRoad ohhh ok bro...thanks bro

The wheels bother me
Ford Crown Victoria or this?
How about both!

Bleed system I have one same problem. Fixed it.

Something is wrong with that car my 1999 740il did 0-60 in 6.5 seconds
After I filmed I did realize it was on a slight uphill incline.

@@brunosolerbalmes9369 Haha nice!! :) :)
Get rid of these awefull rims man!
Already gone. Those BBS RSII were worth $2k so I sold 'em!
3k seems a bit much for a 7 series with 210k miles
Yeah maybe a bit on the high side. But the BBS RSII wheels are worth nearly $1500 on their own. Seemed like a decent deal to me.
Hello Road / Ethan Tufts I don’t think it’s a bad deal, especially not a rust free California car with those wheels and it seemed to do just fine on the road trip.
I’m sure you could have found one a bit cheaper but at what cost really. Sometimes it’s cheaper to pay a bit more and get one that’s in better condition than “the cheapest 7 series in the US”.
Not really bud, that 38 is damn fine, you get wot u pay for.
thats the poor mans 740....... no CEO had that pos
