Keeley Rotten Apple Op-Amp Fuzz

Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Today, we're operating with the Rotten Apple, from Keeley Electronics. The Rotten Apple is a positively smashing distortion box, doling out gobs of thick and meaty gain that defines '90s alternative rock. After beginning its life as an op-amp Big Muff-style circuit, the Rotten Apple became something else entirely, giving you more of the good stuff with none of the bad parts. Not many Muff circuits out there are touch sensitive, but the Rotten Apple is, keeping some of its massive gain in its reserves until you can really dig in and unleash its inner rottenness. The articulation really plays well with the Gain control, which has a greatly expanded range. Cranking the Gain up all the way and abusing the strings unleashes a torrent of molten fuzz that will make your hair stand up on end. Keeley's crew scooped out all the harshness of traditional op-amp Muffs and replaced it with a more even-keeled EQ profile across a three-position toggle switch. This switch features Full, Flat and Scooped modes, giving a broad palette of fuzz tones. Within any Muff style pedal, the Tone control tends to be the weakest link, but it has been overhauled and designed around the distortion circuit of the Rotten Apple, for a smooth filtering that fits like a glove. The low-end of the Rotten Apple has been significantly increased, and is expertly tailored to not overload your amp with low end. And just like all Keeley's pedals, the Rotten Apple is grown right here in the USA.
I'm biased but, damn that sounded good! Smooth, full, deep! Everything I like. And you showed the low gain, sensitivity of it! BRAVO!

That is the most realistic box I have ever heard make it across youtube. It sounds almost like Keeley tuned it for eventual digitization. Your guitar jumped out of my monitors sounding 95%+ like a guitar amp.

I reviewed this video and compared the sound with Andy's other videos, and yes, when Andy kicks in the Rotten Apple, that boxy youtube compression evaporates. If that was by design, you are the first. I know just enough about audio artifacting to see how you could design an anticipatory analog filter. "This ain't your 60s fuzz pedal."
I just got the EHX reissue and I eould still buy this. Not dogging the EHX in any way but the EQ switch on this is game changer. Sounds pretty damn sick!
Wow...only ever heard one other OpAmp style muff that did it for me (and that's coming from a Siamese Dreamer!)...very rich tones (typically with Andy's rig). Will have to see what other demoes reveal of it.

Me like fuzz..............., hairy fuzz, thick fuzz, jungle fuzz, light fuzz, trimmed fuzz................All fuzz...Oh yeah not a bad pedal !
Keeley isn't fair on a man. I just got their 1962x, doesn't matter where I put the dials it all sounds super good. Seems to be the same with every pedal they do and I love fuzz, oh god! They gotta take a breather and stop creating for a year, let my bank balance catch up.

This is a badass pedal, but I would prefer the dreamsicle or the eye see pi for these type of tones

I swear, single coils to fuzz are made for each other. Humbuckers are more to drive. Just my opinion.

Leonard Crainie did you go with either of the two? I’m in the same debate between the EHX Big Muff Op Amp or the Keeley Rotten Apples Op Amp.
Sounds great! Does this work with "scooped" Fender amps, like a Deluxe Reverb or Twin? I've had challenges with most fuzzes, which work great with a Marshall, but suffer with a Fender. It would be great if you mentioned what amp this is paired with.
AB Sea if no other amp is mentioned, they're normally using a Fender Deluxe Reverb, if I'm not mistaken.
Really? I've been through a lot and find them better with fender and hiwatt but then I ain't a fan of marshalls anyway. Off the top of my head if you want mids from your fuzz the Dunlop hendrix pedals are about there and the way huge pedals are so dial-in-able you could hit your spot no problem
I develop all pedals on a Fender Bassman clone. They have to sound good with a Fender circuit.

Anyone think this pedal will be able to do/come close to blue album weezer distortion?
It's a tad too low-gain for that, it's a thicker sound than the Blue Album, you're probably looking for something more mid.
I think I read somewhere that the blue album distortion was actually the gain/drive on a mesa boogie

I regret buying a Big Muff. There are so many better distortion/fuzz pedals available these days; so many pedals that beat it at its own game. This is really the Golden Age of guitar pedals.

remember when you could not give an ic bm away ? then BC did the GP interview where he mentioned using a nyc ic big muff and all th esuddent they went thru the roof . here is a lesson . never listen to anyones opinion on gear trust your ears and keep an opened mind . the days of tube amp worship and les paul human sacrifices are numbered .
