KEELEY MOON OPAMP FUZZ - Is this the HEAVIEST muff ever? I shoot out a pile of muffs to find out

Keeley has so much faith in the heavyness of their moon fuzz that they actually asked me to shoot it out against a bunch of other muff style fuzzes. Right off the bat it was clear that this is something very unique compared to other muffs, the low end thumps like the shockwave some sort accidental industrial explosion yet retains clarity.

Ryan is having a doom phase and I'm here for it.
Good on you mate that’s gay

Dude, I think you unintentionally sold me on the Warlow. All great fuzzes (the Moon, and your whole collection), but that Warlow melted my face off. Wow.
Look into the Boris rocket surgeon pedal now THAT is a face melter
Moon is the right name for this. We landed there in 1969 and seemed satisfied. We landed on Muffs a long time ago and have been fairly satisfied with them. This seems an innovation - growth. Love that growl.
The Big Muff came out in 1969 I think? with the Triangle Muff
Feels like a synchronized bassist or a really nice sub octave with the well defined low end attack transient. Beautiful!
I like Ryan because he doesn't try to be all flashy with his playing. Playing things like chords and octaves (especially in this case) is really showcasing the differences you actually need to care about instead of just, "ehhhh weebs listen to all the scales I know"
rly good point m8
Exactly this. With myriad pedals out there, especially in fuzz category, there is this groundbreaking idea called target markets. "Here's the Funeral Dirge pedal from Black Abyss Effects. Let's see what it sounds like." { plays lawyer blues licks }
This pedal is black. It's called Moon. The creator himself asks to benchmark its heaviness. Even the most novice guitar player can just play power chords and octaves and spare us the inevitable SRV.
Thank you 60hz Hum!
Every time I think one of the others sounds good you click the Keeley and the veils are drawn away revealing true confrontation. Confident Mr. Keeley knew this design was levels up. The new 100% has been set.
man you have change from surf church normal guitarist guy, to a doom lord XD
like i remember you say you don't know how to play heavy riffs for metal a long time ago
and now you ripping the shit out of it
it's really fun and always my favorite video to watch in the morning
just you tying out fuzz 😌👌
thanks man, thank you a lot
That Hizumitas sounded the best to me. Thanks for the demo, might have to look into it. lol
Keeley!! Have Ryan do more of these. Awesome video!! Thanks for doing the comparison. This Moon sounds amazing! I'm in the market for an Op Amp Fuzz and getting to hear some different ones and muffs and what not... what a great idea.
This pedal, a Sunflower, and a Surfybear is all you need; everything else is superfluous.
I could carve out some new worlds with that batch... 🤔
thanks for the sick sounds! what a great fuzz comparison!
Absolutely one of the top five most enjoyable vids I’ve seen in a long time! Your expressions said everything throughout the video; words were almost unnecessary. The culmination during the pairing of the Moon and the Warlow is audio perfection. Sheer brutality and beauty combined. Thank you so much for posting this!
Moon is my first fuzz ever. It does get a pretty gnarly sound. Nice demo and comparison. Thanks
I just ordered this pedal (the Moon) thanks to this video. Can’t wait. Subscribed!
9:31 - EHX
9:49 - Moon
Timestamps for the direct shootout-curious; great video, Ryan!
I could live with this and a halo and be perfectly happy. Robert Keeley is a genius builder.
@@RaymondGinn1978 same
I have a Moon and a Vick Audio Triangle, they are indeed different animals. The Moon has the crunch from the op amps and also so much “wallop” as you put it. Heck, on the full setting it’s so blown out, it’s like the notes are all jamming up in the speakers like when the 3 stooges try to get through the same door.
I love the circuit on the dark side, this was already on my list, but this was such a fun demo I just have to get it. With the Halo. Keeley are on fire right now.
I have a Dark Side and it has the same Flat/Full/Scooped switch on it. I've never like how little mid range muffs have, but I was looking for a modulation/tape delay pedal and stumbled on the Dark Side on reverb and thought I would take a shot. Instantly fell in love with the fuzz side of it once I switched to the Full setting and lowered the gain a bit. Its a great fuzzy distortion type sound. I don't care it doesn't sound exactly like a normal muff because that's what I didn't want.
The keeley loomer has the same fuzz!
Plus, awesome Modulator and delay
The Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff has a mid control and even a mid frequency knob.
@@EricTheCleric93 I was actually thinking of getting one after I found my modulation/delay but once I got the dark side getting that was out of the question
If you are after a muff with mids then the EHX Sovtek Deluxe is unbelievable. Has mids boost & noise gate and costs a fraction of what a lot of the boutique companies cost
i love to hear what fuzzes sound like with gain at minimum. i have a jhs pumpkin patch i use that way a lot. i recognize this is a kind of weird use case, but especially with the three eq options, seems like it could be interesting.
edit: just wanted to say that using the cherub rock riff as a reference sound is 100% correct
I use my alpha haunt as a mean clean sometimes. I like it.
I have this fuzz and find it is brutally loud.
Wow Keeley is killing it right now. Just got their Halo dual delay and now this!?
Love my Wren & Cuff muffs, but this may be a gotta get.
Now you're definitely the King of Fuzz :D
The Moon is killer. I got one the second they came out! I have 5 Fuzz pedals on my board and use everyone at a gig. The closest to the Moon for super jumbo large extra big is a germanium SolidGold 76 which behaves within reason. My real vintage Fuzz pedals are paper weights ..not gigable. Of course I will keep them..but
keeley, youve made one hell of a pedal. im in love
I really like it. It's burley and doesn't have the white noise component of a regular Muff (hell, even the Op Amp Muff) sound. One of these into a high watt amp could be devastating.
What's funny is I nearly bought this: that money went into an original 1984 HM-2 because I saw your videos on them.
When he went stereo, all I could think of was dual JCMs each running into a pair of 4x12 cabs. Like that stereo setup legit needs 16 12s and a big power.
I loved the Hisumitas. What ever it is it's a super cool fuzz box.
I have a Loomer and It's also the same Flat/Full/scooped switch on it, I love using the scoop switch on the fuzz. I also I have a Op Amp Big Muff pedal and it's definitely my Favourite Big Muff pedal.
Two Princetons! Haha that first strum almost knocked you off your seat. You looked a little bit frightened. That's a great endorsement for a fuzz pedal if I've ever seen one.
Badass!! I want one now.
I’m getting a Warlow because of your demos… I might get a moon too. Awesome!
Woh!!! Hold the Warlow horses! That thing is blisteringly awesome. I've never heard of the Warlow until this week.
The Moon is cool too! It almost sounds like the bass isn't being included in the tone nob, like it's just always cool-aid man-ing the tone.
That's one reason I like fuzz pedals. You'll hear a nice full low end on the clean amp and turn on an overdrive or distortion and the sub lows will just disappear, like it lost it's balls. But fuzzes usually keep that low end in, the Moon really keeps it in.
Ever played with an HM-2 or clone? roll off the high/mid knob, and you've got a massive bass boost. It's good for doomy type music. It does alot more than the chainsaw sound.
The Moon has that trailing break up and the end of the signal. You know, the Jack White thing but not as prominent. I like it. I can close my eyes and you can tell when he's got the Moon engaged as apposed to any of the others. The Moon really does outclass them all , in my opinion.
For pure fabric ripping reality and versatility and tone control the Keeley does seem to have something steps ahead of the others. There is something extra gritty and textured about it, like the highest resolution of an image possible.
As unique as it sounds for a muff, it's gotta have the mid scoop/flat/boost switch - the quintessential big muff mod.
I got it. A band on stage ready to go but ryan has a 30 min doom intro then breaks into a 5 min surf jam with full band thats how you end the night
I like how you played the pumpkins riff right away to weed out the haters
I was trying to figure out what guitar he’s playing. A custom finished JAG-STANG! So awesome. Love the toxic green
The moon actually sounds like two muffs one driving the other and no high pass circuitry at all. Very heavy but also full sound.
I happened to have opened-up one of the EHX units, and on the electronics board the phrase "I shall be free" is printed, obviously Corgan's lyric from "Hummer".
That Keeley is keeeeeling me!
Dammit, I missed the show even though I have notifications turned on! Sorry Ryan, you know I always like to catch them live so I can participate. Hi everyone else...
I suppose the bright spot in the whole affair is at the time I was playing the ‘69 Teisco ET-440 Spectrum 4 through the new Vox MSB25 Mini Super Beetle, and playing with the pedal board.
Had some real good sounds. I don’t play surf music, but that Teisco ET-440 Spectrum 4 definitely “surfs”. It is also easily the lightest of my guitars. You really want to rip into it when playing it, and just swing it around with attitude.
Good show Ryan, I’m watching as I type this out. The color of that Jag-Stang is just something else. Where do you put the batteries for it? I wonder if it would have looked real cool with a matching headstock. I guess we’ll never know…
"There is no 'dark side' of the Moon, it's all dark, really..." Apt.
That hits just the right spot in the guts.
Ryan, if I lived in San Diego, I would be the first to join your Improv Doom band. We'd give Sunn O))) some competition. I can't get over how HEAVY that pedal makes your JagStang sound, and it's in E Standard, right? Just shows that heavy does not need to be down-tuned.
slice of pie sounds legit !
Hey Ryan! You should get a JRR Triangle Ram (maybe it’s the Ram Triangle?). I bought one and just started playing it yesterday and I love it! Only $60 after shipping too!
I've got to get myself one of these!
This demo made me buy the stoy fuzzmaster
I have a Crown of Horns fuzz from BAT, and it's their take on the op-amp muff, with a mids control and a pharaoh-esque tone-stack (Long. Live. The. Pharaoh. The. Pharaoh. Is. Supreme.), and the Moon-Op sounds quite similar to it, but perhaps even fatter and more solid. I'm really interested anyway, I love the sound of that Moon-Op pedal.
the warlow continues to stand out compared to most muffs
it's the Rat up in there. Rat's are way better than muffs
@@CoreyKJ You take that back!
nah, it's a cool sounding op-amp muff, and the rat-tone sack is a rad choice to have, but one of the most extraordinary and THICCEST fuzzes out there, is the Frantone Creampuff. That thing is thick. Like cement thick. So heavy sounding. It's pretty scooped sounding, but with something with some mids pushing it, fuck it sounds heavy. Makes the Warlow hesitate, and tremble.
You need to try a boss hyperfuzz. If you liked the moon, you will love how it just sounds like the amp is melting
Love that it doesn't use the usual _Where Are My Mids_ tonestack, but for my money, those lows are _tooooo_ much.
Fine for playing at home, but you're just gonna be fighting for space with any whole band, having to EQ your amp to make it work, and making your bypassed sound MAD WEEDY.
I like what I'm hearing with this... but my current favorite "heaviest fuzz" sound (ok, not exactly a Muff, but...) is when I stack my iSet Booster after my Danelectro French Toast (Foxx Tone Machine clone- sounds like the Musiclily fuzz). The iSet Booster really cranks up the bass for a massive doomy sound, and as an added bonus, the French Toast in octave mode is automatically noise-gated, so it doesn't have the huge background noise a Muff makes.
He's playing power chords for these pedals which is the correct way. Most people wanna play trash blues leads.
Your mustache is legit.
I’m interested in the Hizumitas
Ryan can you upload a 10 hour loop of the Two Princetons theme? Cheers 💕
Dude I would Totally go to the show
You should see if you and JHS can source a few of the Algal Bloom Fuzz. Had one in the late 2000s and still to this day, even with everything else out, I feel the Algal Bloom is still the most versatile Fuzz that somehow doesn't sound bad no matter what you do to it.
Great Celtic Frost riffage man
This sounds so heavy they should Ola Englund give a review! 🤣
Stereo…I need this. I’m liking the doom phase.
Supertainment!
I don’t know if that’s a word…
Auto correct suggested it but it seems appropriate…
What I actually said was Superb demo!
Monster stereo finale… 😎
Thats a wild fuzz Please do a demo/review of the orange surfcaster on the wall behind you Maybe Keeley put a chainsaw inside the Moon box😮🤪
I MUST HAVE!!
Yeah!! 😎
You should probably listen to what the Keeley boys want you to do
😂!!!
Incredible!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Keeely ROCKS!!!!
Reminds me of the Fuzz War.
mini muff sounding pretty darn close to the Moon there
That would sound sick with a bass.
Hmmm, I think I discovered something somewhat distressing, but not the end of the world. Fuzz pedals don’t really go well with my hearing aid. I’m deaf, and completely rely on my hearing aid for my hearing, and the harmonics of the fuzz pedals get lost, and disappear on me. There are certain frequencies that I’ve noted in my own playing where I lose the sound even though I know it’s there. It’s a really odd phenomenon for me.
I’m going to have to run my ProCo Rat, and my Behringer SF300 in my own place to see if those help me or work against me. The one thing I know is that a noise gate is a must with the high gain pedals. I can turn the gain all the way down on my Vox, and still get that hissing without the noise gate. I’m also beginning to suspect that my pedal board power supply isn’t all that great.
Love me some gnarly thick monster fuzz!!!
Hey there. Is that jag-stang A custom paint job? I have been looking for it since I saw the video. Can’t even find a picture of one in that color? Thanks for the video!
Yes it is - steve
@@60CycleHumcast bummer. It is sweet! Thank you for the reply
Sounds like a Super Fuzz. High Octave in there.
Your face right when you turn it on says it all!
I unboxed the moon, plugged it in, and within 5 seconds of playing I knew it was my favorite fuzz I've ever played.
love your videos, ryan.
you could call me a "hum bum" 😘
Dang I literally just ordered the Op Amp Big Muff and wondering if I should try to cancel my order and get the Moon instead.
What is your jagstang tuned to for this video?
Dang, this sounds like the perfect pedal for a doom tone. Maybe blend it with a fuzz factory or a "metal" distortion (like anything is more metal than this beast).
Electric wizard in a pedal. Nice.
I would love to see you do a review on the Justin Chancellor Fuzz Wah from Crybaby.
How does it compare to the EQD hoof?
Boy! with somw volume through my monitors at home those stereo rig vibrations nearly made me poop my pants!
Have you reviewed the Sputnik 3?
What is your signal path for these videos? DI or mic'd? I find it tough to properly capture fuzz when mic'ing my amp for home recording.
ribbon mics on two princeton reverbs. I like ribbon mics because they capture a wide range of the signal vs the tight nasal sound of a dynamic. Also the princetons have different speaker models so they balance each other out nicely in a mix.
Thanks for the quick reply - it sounds great@@60CycleHumcast
Came for the pedal, stayed for the pedal with the baritone.
i just came
is the moon keeley fuzz made of germanium or silicon?
Lots of tone for $149. Awesome.
The mini muff is imo the only one to compete with the moon
OOF!
was shocked when it outdid the Warlow so easily at the bottom end.
the change over from guitar to baritone sounded like the crazy bits of a Sonic Youth gig.
Was really surprised that the Moon didn't support Baritone as well as I thought it would on its own.
you chose the right pairing for stereo; The warlow has a nice 2.7kHz cut through and the Moon has bass clarity & presence that leaves a bassist kinda redundant in that particular band ( I know a few 2 person Doom bands that will want this set up)
Lush combo, & correct conclusion.
Thank you and Keeley for a comparison that I really needed to see.
A little concerned that I can feel my subconscious gearing up to try and justify buying a 7th Fuzz pedal especially as I'm in England and it'll probably be a bit more expensive here.
I love what Keeley has done with this.
Warlow currently 19% off ....yoink! (this all your fault)
try the EHX opamp with a humbucker and loads of tone ;-)
Hey Ryan, What splitter pedal are using for the stereo run? Thanks!
Ehx switchblade
@@60CycleHumcast Thanks!
Check out KINK pedals from Australia, and the "Russian Plague" (Green Russian Big Muff + Rat pedal) it's great!
Moon: doom 👹
Bigmuff opamp: grunge 🎃
Seen a few of these fuzz comparison videos. Nothing ever seems to even get close to the op amp muff tone.
Have you or anyone out there in youtube land found anything that gets close to the opamp sound at a price point cheaper than the original?
@26:66 Hurt Me PLENTY 🤩
Imagine this through a cranked Model T or an OR120.
If like to see this compared to a No Moon from Idiotbox Effects. It's a Muff, Tube Screamer and Rat all in parallel.
This Moon pedal identified why I don't like the Mff as much as the Rat. This Moon thing sounds like a Muff flung off a cliff. The only decent Muff here is the one with the Rat circuit. I love fuzz but the Rat just does it so perfect
Jesus man, when you hooked em both up it was like Sunn 0))). You should get a couple 4x15 cabs and grow your hair to your belt.
