This very much reminds me of TV shows here in the US that take an engineering project (ship building, bridge maintenance, etc.) and make it dramatic, with a mini-crisis just before each commercial break, yet with a successful conclusion. Very enjoyable, Sam. Cheers!
Man what a great series every loco has me hoping they can be frankensteined back to life and shows the level of competency and passion this guy has for the hobby. On a side note Samtrain's Engineering Works must be good because the scrapman is probably the most evil contraption I've ever seen you create and you have to so a 'Salvage or Scrap' Halloween special with a loco that would be a mission impossible that only igor frankenstein himself could pull off saving

Just found this series recently, and I'm loving it! As if restoring locos wasn't hard enough, you're putting time and condition restrictions on it! Looking forward to viewing them all. Cheers, Jim L
The 57xx Pannier tank is my favorite non-American steam locomotive (ergo, Duck is my favorite Thomas character). They look so proud and professional. It would have broken my heart to see the Scrapman get his paws on this one, so I'm especially glad to see it salvaged.
Morning Sam, a challenge which normally doesn’t go up again a clock. Let alone under an hour. Fantastic you meet and beat the challenge. Excellent idea, can you have a longer video which shows more of what and how you doing the fixes, know many of the repairs and services have been done before but any thing or tips always help. Keep up great videos, look forward to next reviews. New hornby pendolino? Old tooling but new livery… all best Marc
Hello and love your channel. I use to fix PCs and laptops which have many small parts like model trains. I would used a ice cube tray or egg carton to keep the small parts and screws organized and on-hand in a safe location. I hope this is an useful tip for you. Thanks and keep up the great work.
The Scrap man is the lead operator of the Smelters Yard on the island of Sodor. And Mr.Sam, you all way’s managed to salvage all of your old broken locomotive’s, has their actually ever been a time when the Scrap Man got his keep?
What a fascinating series. I'm guessing the time limit adds a bit of excitement to the video but from my point of view even if restoration was over a longer time period it would have been just as fascinating.
Thanks a lot Geoff - yeah the time limit is there for a bit of suspense... but it also reduces filming time/data usage... the projects would just become too massive if I kept going all day... and I'm on quite a tight budget ;) Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam I am glad you made this video. I own quite a few Pannier tank engines that are preowned so you have given me how to work on them when they need it . Thanks from your friend in the USA.
“Daddy gear” the chuckling levels suddenly increased. Enjoying this Sam! Makes me appreciate the finer sides of this amazing hobby. And on the subject of Mainline locos running well - I have a Royal Scot in amazing condition! Bought secondhand, its only issue is a minor wobble. Other than that, she’s a star
Enjoyed the video. Glad you got this one fixed. I have the replica railways version which I believe is the same which I bought in the mid 1990's. I quite like the split chassis for it's simplicity. Thanks for showing cheers Paul.
Thanks for sharing Paul - yes that's right it'll be the same/similar! The split chassis would be a very good/simple design if only the axles were more reliable and motor isolation was a bit easier... it's just not a design that works very well these days when DCC is the name of the game! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That was fun and exciting. I hope that you enjoy making these as much as we enjoy watching. If you didn't live on the other side of the world, I might send you a loco or two to work on.
Hello Sam, more news from the US side of the pond. I’ve now obtained a Bachmann “Baldwin modern 4-4-0” from eBay. It was used on eBay, but was a good price, and in great condition, and right out of the box, it fired up with sound. Not as big, or pricey as the Broadway Limiteds, but still a welcome addition to the collection. Keep up the awesome work
Hey Owen - that sounds superb - those Bachmann 4-4-0s are a guilty pleasure of mine... lovely things... bet the modern ones are an absolute treat! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'm surprised that you said it is the best you have ever seen one of these run. My Bachmann Panier is a truly good runner, even at slow speed and has no wobble. I was so happy with it, that I tried to put sound into it, but that was too much to ask as there wasn't room for the larger decoder unless I wanted to put in in the cab, so failed on that one.
The Bachmanns are a bit better as they used better motors... the Mainline locos I've had in the past are very ropey indeed! And this one only wobbled on the rolling road... perfectly good on track! Yeah the split-chassis designs aren't great for DCC... it can be done, but it's not worth the trouble if you ask me! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
