Yes that was funny :)
haha yeah... I genuinely only realised what I'd said after I'd said it!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains 🤣, yeah don't worry, I don't think anyone would have thought you were trying to say anything naughty, it was just a funny moment after you set it up with your little family of gears 🤣

An excellent tutorial on engine repair, complete with suspense and drama! Bravo on your editing skills. This very much reminds me of TV shows here in the US that take an engineering project (ship building, bridge maintenance, etc.) and make it dramatic, with a mini-crisis just before each commercial break, yet with a successful conclusion. Very enjoyable, Sam. Cheers!
haha thanks very much Andrew, that's very kind of you... glad to hear that... I was going for a US-TV style! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I love how regular Sam's Trains Sam looks at the instructions carefully.
While salvage or scrap Sam doesn't do instructions! XD
haha this is true, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Man what a great series every loco has me hoping they can be frankensteined back to life and shows the level of competency and passion this guy has for the hobby.
On a side note Samtrain's Engineering Works must be good because the scrapman is probably the most evil contraption I've ever seen you create and you have to so a 'Salvage or Scrap' Halloween special with a loco that would be a mission impossible that only igor frankenstein himself could pull off saving
Loving this series! cant help but notice the Ebay listing, when that CP loco is showcased I might make a bid on it.
Same
Thank you so much! Yeah sure - that one should be up on Ebay when the time comes, thanks a lot for the support!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This has become my favorite series on the channel, Sam. Your production quality is fantastic, theres a high entertainment value, I'm always on the edge of my seat hoping you outwit the evil scrap man! Well done mate.
Love, Love, Love these!
I only wish there was an uncut version for the full 46 minutes!
Thanks very much Richard - I still have the footage.... maybe that's something I can do one day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I like how you made this series look like an actual British TV Show that is airing on BBC. Real nice 👌
haha thank you so much! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I picked up one of these lovely locos for £20 at a vintage antiques warehouse but have worried it may never run - this gives me great hope! Well done Sam!
Hey Sam you are the best.
Hello !
Hello! Thank you so much :3
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi XD.
Just found this series recently, and I'm loving it! As if restoring locos wasn't hard enough, you're putting time and condition restrictions on it! Looking forward to viewing them all. Cheers, Jim L
Hi Sam I am glad you made this video. I own quite a few Pannier tank engines that are preowned so you have given me how to work on them when they need it . Thanks from your friend in the USA.
What a fascinating series. I'm guessing the time limit adds a bit of excitement to the video but from my point of view even if restoration was over a longer time period it would have been just as fascinating.
Thanks a lot Geoff - yeah the time limit is there for a bit of suspense... but it also reduces filming time/data usage... the projects would just become too massive if I kept going all day... and I'm on quite a tight budget ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice, a new concept, and well executed! I can see your putting in a lot of care into your UA-cam channel.
Morning Sam, a challenge which normally doesn’t go up again a clock. Let alone under an hour. Fantastic you meet and beat the challenge. Excellent idea, can you have a longer video which shows more of what and how you doing the fixes, know many of the repairs and services have been done before but any thing or tips always help. Keep up great videos, look forward to next reviews. New hornby pendolino? Old tooling but new livery… all best Marc
“Daddy gear” the chuckling levels suddenly increased. Enjoying this Sam! Makes me appreciate the finer sides of this amazing hobby. And on the subject of Mainline locos running well - I have a Royal Scot in amazing condition! Bought secondhand, its only issue is a minor wobble. Other than that, she’s a star
haha thanks Davis - appreciate it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Enjoyed the video. Glad you got this one fixed. I have the replica railways version which I believe is the same which I bought in the mid 1990's. I quite like the split chassis for it's simplicity. Thanks for showing cheers Paul.
Thanks for sharing Paul - yes that's right it'll be the same/similar! The split chassis would be a very good/simple design if only the axles were more reliable and motor isolation was a bit easier... it's just not a design that works very well these days when DCC is the name of the game!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow ,, good job Sam,, good to see you are doing something I have done in real time and thats scrap metal recycling and transporting scrap and bits and pieces. Also i didnt know you can use vasolene as bearing grease. See we learn something new every day. Again Thanks for the awesome videos you put on UA-cam.
Cheers from John in Australia
Hello and love your channel. I use to fix PCs and laptops which have many small parts like model trains. I would used a ice cube tray or egg carton to keep the small parts and screws organized and on-hand in a safe location. I hope this is an useful tip for you. Thanks and keep up the great work.
The fact you bought this train so cheap and it looks so fantastic makes me yearn to have steady hands and get good at cleaning and fixing 🥰
Hi Sam: Tips abound, extremely useful video for all enthusiasts!
Just wanted to say I love this series Sam, stay awesome :)
Thank you so much Chris, appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think this is the earliest I've ever been on one of your videos, and I'm excited I've been looking forward to this episode!
haha awesome - hope you really like it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I feel sorry for the family member who’s toothbrush you used. Now covered in mould😂
Plus what ever Sam used.
Yep! I cleaned it up good... they didn't notice ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Really enjoying this series! Some elements of the mending process are particularly satisfying as well! 😁😁
That's very kind of you - yeah it's always been a pleasure fixing up old engines! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The 57xx Pannier tank is my favorite non-American steam locomotive (ergo, Duck is my favorite Thomas character). They look so proud and professional. It would have broken my heart to see the Scrapman get his paws on this one, so I'm especially glad to see it salvaged.
The Scrap man is the lead operator of the Smelters Yard on the island of Sodor. And Mr.Sam, you all way’s managed to salvage all of your old broken locomotive’s, has their actually ever been a time when the Scrap Man got his keep?
Splish splash your opinion is trash.

Plz don’t be rude.
Great videos, love the channel. A rust removal trick I was once shown was to get some kitchen foil and rub the rust. Works a treat.
I have watched several of your episodes. The Salvage and Scrap were the most interesting and entertaining. Please make more. Excellent Channel
Cotton buds and the brush head from an electric toothbrush… tools of the master! I love it! Looks like my workbench. Well done on the restoration.
I love a pannier! Glad you managed to fix it.
Cool job, Sam.. I love those little pannier locos.
i really enjoy this series. keep it up!
Woah, never seen a mainline loco run like this. Out of all of them, this was the one I was doubting you'd fix. Good job.
Yeah! Definitely the best Mainline loco I've ever had too... shame to part with it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I always look forward to salvage or scrap. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see one go to the scrap man! Nice job it's a beautiful train!
The Time-o-Matic sounds a lot like Wallace & Gromit. Love it! 😍
Absolutely fabulous Sam . Well done 👏.
That was fun and exciting. I hope that you enjoy making these as much as we enjoy watching. If you didn't live on the other side of the world, I might send you a loco or two to work on.
Thanks very much Robert - oh sure - it was a lot of fun to film this lot! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hello Sam, more news from the US side of the pond. I’ve now obtained a Bachmann “Baldwin modern 4-4-0” from eBay. It was used on eBay, but was a good price, and in great condition, and right out of the box, it fired up with sound. Not as big, or pricey as the Broadway Limiteds, but still a welcome addition to the collection. Keep up the awesome work
Hey Owen - that sounds superb - those Bachmann 4-4-0s are a guilty pleasure of mine... lovely things... bet the modern ones are an absolute treat!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love this series. Keep it up!
These are excellent. Nicely done Sam!
"Must look like new". Well, granted, no worries, we'll be looking the other way, lol. Nice cute little loco Sam, and happy that you could save her, certainly looking the business. Naturally weathered and wear and tear like the real thing.
haha yeah - don't think I quite succeeded on that... but it certainly looks better! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is such a cool series mate!
Sams trains is the best source of nonchalant sarcastic comedy
Happy to see that you saved what is maybe my favourite Brit loco. I was worried you wouldn't get it done.
That's good to hear Dan - yes I'm glad it wasn't ruined too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'm impressed. You've really nailed that Discovery Channel feeling. 👍
Work of an artist Sam, thanks for sharing.
Cheers Ron - really appreciate it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, Nice to see it back on track ( I have a Mainline warship rubbish would not have a Mainline again) All the Best Brian 🤗
Hi Sam.. Another scrapheap challenge great.... a seriously built model, built to last... poor scrap monster all he gets to eat is paper ( not that i will ever believe that it would eat anything more than that).. great vid Sam tnks.
Haha, love it Sam 🤓 I do like the 57XXs so I am glad you were able to do such a good job on her! 🍾
Glad to see the Scrapman’s plate was empty again 😜
Cheers mate 👍🍻🍀
Thanks a lot Tim - yes me too - would have been sad not to be able to fix that one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice its great to see the scrap man loves instructions
Awesome video today Sam so glad you got the locomotive working again
Thanks a lot James - I'm glad too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
nice turn around Sam... i have a J72 which is crying for a Sams Trains style clean over! cheers Neil
Thanks a lot my friend - ahh fantastic, good luck with it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Love this dude. Scrap man is a legend
Ayyy this is my favorite series! Keep them coming !
Thank you so much! Still a few more to come! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains maybe you could buy some used ones on ebay and try and restore them that would be good !
I have gotten back in trains, I missed watching your videos
Thank you so much - and welcome back to the hobby! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This format reminds me of typical british and american car shows I watched with my dad
Amazing, keep up the great work x
A cool video Sam. I always ♥ the Salvage or Scrap series.
Nice restoration!
18:18 - I'd say that looks "brand new", if Heljan are anything to go by!
Yay I love this series so much, I can’t wait to see what looks like a Canadian pacific gp 38 diesel ,in a episode
Thanks so much - that one's a blast - hope you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yay can’t wait!! :)
This had me hiding behind my chair it`s more scarier than Doctor Who...lol Well done Sam..
Amazing job done here ! I was considering buying some non-runners on ebay to have a decorating shelf with some trains, but if you can turn back a shelf queen into a running engine... Mmmm, except one with missing parts, which kind of second-hand engine might be really unsalvageable ? Destroyed gears, burned up motor, kinked axles or wheels, broken chassis... Have you seen one so badly damaged that it cannot be salvaged at all ? That might exist...
27 years old and I still have to skip past the intro .... That scrap man freeks me the hell out! Also Sam my god there was so many joke in this one that made me laugh 🤣 thank you
haha sorry about that... I didn't mean to make him as grotesque as he is! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I use fuse wire to make handrails but my 1960 Hornby Dublo A4 Golden Fleece still has its original carbon brushes and runs like a dream.
Hey, another of Salvage or Scrap. Great video. Activating the time o matic makes me laugh. I have tried fixing a mainline rebuilt patriot but it's split chassis is horrible, it's sat in a plastic tub in pieces waiting to be fixed.
haha thank you! Yes they are horrible - mine's always had running issues too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Time-O-Matic was a bit generous with 46', still excellent job considering the time limit.
Interesting, and shows the difference between 'then' and 'now'.
Al.
haha that's true - I knew it'd be a big job though... so had a word with the timeomatic beforehand! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I assumed you did, (and you should ;)) splice the time in afterwards, like TV shows do, then you can make it as nail biting as you want. I assumed that was the entire reason for the random time selected xD
i have a feeling those instructions will be all that the evil scrapman eats from these videos. great job restoring the engine to running condition!
What a great episode,great job sam👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Gotta love Scrapman's voice !!! 👍👍👍
Nice one! Job well done!
Job well done Sam.........very entertaining...........Cheers Greg
Hey Sam I've got models that are about 30 - 40 years old and have never been serviced in their life and run fine, tad noisy but that's ringfield motors for you bit noisy but last forever, proper craftmanship back in those days 👍
Wow that's impressive! Yeah they built things properly in those days! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yeah I've got a old ringfield class 25 with only a bit of oil on the gears every now and then and it crawls better than some of my more modern locos ( cough cough hornby railroad mallard cough) 😀
Mainline was a standout brand when they suddenly arrived from Palitoy in the late 70s/early 80s.
I still have two J72 models that have been part of my layout since they were bought new in about 1982. Both still work perfectly reliably and have has little maintenance in that time - NEVER opened the motor - and have been running regularly at model railway shows at least three times annually - except 2020.'
This year, 2021, I have attended two layout shows and have another on October.
Wonder why people seem down on the "split chassis" type systems in these locomotives?
I'm surprised that you said it is the best you have ever seen one of these run. My Bachmann Panier is a truly good runner, even at slow speed and has no wobble. I was so happy with it, that I tried to put sound into it, but that was too much to ask as there wasn't room for the larger decoder unless I wanted to put in in the cab, so failed on that one.
The Bachmanns are a bit better as they used better motors... the Mainline locos I've had in the past are very ropey indeed! And this one only wobbled on the rolling road... perfectly good on track! Yeah the split-chassis designs aren't great for DCC... it can be done, but it's not worth the trouble if you ask me!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That Z-e-n broadband ad before every video I watch on UA-cam is driving me nuts!
Very “Great Western” of you Sam
The evil scrap man should make an appearance at one of the upcoming Hallowsteam events being held at various heritage railways in the UK - now that would scare the kids!
That's pretty impressive I have to say I thought it was pretty much a doomed from the start. I thought this would be the first time the scrapman was going to get a snack, oh well at least he got the instructions
haha yeah - I wasn't very confident... that's for sure! I was planning for this one to be a fail... with it being split chassis and everything!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I suppose you fed the Scrapman the instructions out of pity for starving him for so long. Anyway, I wish I could be this good at cleaning these things. I already broke a couple locos in my attempt to clean them. I even gimped my Baldwin 10-12-D a bit after removing the base keeper plate (although Bachmann's decision to attach the pickups to it is the one major flaw in an otherwise good model.) I just wish cleaning them were easier.
Yeah exactly - don't want him not having the energy to do a good job when the time does come to scrap something ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Now you have a new panier tank good job Sam.
I love dis series keep it up
Since the Panier tank waddles you could nickname it Duck.
Hi mukka... Happy 2022 to you. You failed the task! "Like new" was your required standard yet the handrails let it down. You still had 6 minutes to polish the handrails yet declined to use the available time to completely polish them. You have done that before with another model... handrails left half done and yet spare time was available. Come on chum... lift your game!
I liked the 'thin ice' scene by the way. Papa bear would certainly have eaten all the porridge! No more to say on that topic. 🤭
That was great to watch, very well done Sam! Maybe if you do a series 2 next year, you could perhaps do it so lots of modeling UA-camrs compete against each other, 2 people per programme and they get to chose a loco from a selection of non runners and then have a set time to restore them. and then maybe followed by a final for the winners of those so you can have a winner for the series. Just like the bake off! Perhaps you could be the presenter, and then all you would need would be some terrible shirts, rubbish hair, and a fat bloke as a co host!!
Thank you so much! And that'd be super cool.... If I ever get the budget to make the show bigger, that'd be amazing! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Poor Scrap Man. This could have a second season where you take on other modelers. That would be fun to watch and give bragging rights to the winner. You could have two locos of near equal disrepair. Have your competitor choose first then complete. Just an idea.
Oh yes! Have Sam scrapping (pun intended!) with Jenny Kirk or Roderick Stewart - fun!
Entertaining and amusing as ever 😁👍
Wait, your selling them afterwards!? I beg you please keep the Flying Scotsman that’s there, it’s a lovely looking model and I would love to see it on your railway more often!
Yeah most of them are being sold! The Scotsman is lovely, but I already have one just like that... so no need for another! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think I see a bit of a waddle with the Pannier.
Ah, it's probably nothing. Just reminded me of another Pannier tank.
Nicely done. 👍
TV level quality, CBBC should pick this up ASAP!
Ok so I know there's a time factor here but here's a little secret if you soak your steel parts in fresh lemon juice it takes away all the rust, it's slow acting so it takes a day or two but they come out looking great and it's not as severe as using a stronger acid! ....... beats grinding such tiny parts
Haven’t watched the full vid, so I’m just saying this as if this was a trailer, good luck Sam!
haha thank you - I needed it this time ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i really do enjoy these sam
one day i would love to lern how repair model trains oo gaudge
thx ben :)
I love this series
Great video! Can you do some rolling stock repairs and maybe some o scale? Also I think you should 3d print a cage for Ernie
Thanks so much! And that's a great idea - I can look into that! A cage is a top suggestion too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The good news is it's not mold,it's just weathering, it's just made to look like dirt and grime .
At least this one did not came with the later Bachmann square bearings (yes i had one of those old split ones)!
Lol last month i also bought a buggered 5700 for, oddly enough, £1 less than yours. It was a hornby duck, but im currently restoring it in br black as no. 5741
