The thing I find interesting about older model trains is that they weren't models, they were toys. This thing was probably worn out by a child who loved it to the moon and back, because it was indeed an affordable toy, not a complicated model. Super cool!
I had one!
The Dock shunter was my first own purchase in about 1956. After being passed (and abused) through a further two generations of family it is now back with me - and currently running smoothly on my display.
I think salvage or scrap has to be one of the best segments on your channel, I may not always be around for some of your unboxing vids but I'll be damned if I miss another episode of salvage or scrap!
Thank you so much - that's really lovely to hear! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Agreed, so glad this is back
Same, I love this series! Can't wait to see more!
In season 1 every engine survived the scrap man but here in season 2 were now seeing the scrap man in action
I'm glad to finally get a 'scrapped' ending!
You're right! I've tried to give myself tighter time limits for this season so we might see some failures... it seems to have worked xD
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yep
@Sam’sTrains can you add a bell sfx when the timer is on 0? Maybe Big Ben?
the real question is, what happens to the model once its at the mercy of the scrapman, is it just a trash can with a creepy face on it?
I for one would love to see a Scrap Or Salvage 'special episode' where there's no time limit and the loco is proper minging! XD A full on 0 to 100 restoration. If it's too much to get sorted, the EVIL scrap-man can have it :P
The trouble with no time limit would mean the Scrap Man never has it as it can take forever to repair the loco :)
haha that would be fun actually - though I did a few streams like that during covid... see what you think: ua-cam.com/video/b8VIyEjgF-o/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think no time limit would take the fun out of it, but definitely have a few hours to get the loco fixed
Great repair, however the images of the final product are so dark, you can’t really see it , need more lighting or camera exposure . Cheers
Yay! My favorite specialty Sam's Trains video series is back. And a shunter, too. Thanks, Sam, and cheers from Wisconsin!
haha awesome - hope you enjoy it my friend!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes! More Salvage or Scrap, I am glad this is back
Thank you!! Really hope you like it :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains With the Scrapman does the locomotive actually get damaged? I assume it doesn't but I am curious now this vintage shunter was sentenced to a worse fate than the Cursed Underground Train.
Glad to see season 2 of Salvage and Scrap. Your channel prompted me to salvage my trainset from my parents' house and finally starting working on my layout, an old childhood dream that is finally coming true. I salvaged my three Lima engines servicing them like you do! Great channel and let's hope you keep the Evil Scrapman on a strict diet. Greetings from Italy!
19:36 scrapman:GIVE ME THE TRAIN I WANT THE TRAIN
Pleased to see Salvage or Scrap back , I think the loco you was working on was not from 1958 but 1972 as it has the newer pickup and later number . The older version had one the couplings as part of the body and was number 5 . David
Awesome! Yes you could be right - the Dock shunter was around for quite a time!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes I have mine from 1958, I used to call it Dock Dorothy!
But the other one was red
@@nonoyorbusness Best run on Super 4 track , as toy trains they are pretty good,
@@Warhorse8192 I had a yellow Triang one.
I'm so happy you decided to do more of these Sam. They're amazing
this series makes me happy, it feels oddly nostalgic and give off cbbc vibes. i love it
This series is fantastic, Sam and I’m so glad to see it back! Your videography, model railway collections, and transparency/honesty is all top notch and makes for the best channel in the hobby. You’re the greatest!
Trevor
Thank you so much Trevor, that's absolutely lovely to hear - appreciate it my friend!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh, I have one of these, painted all yellow. I always found it fascinating because it's such an old loco with a built-in light. Mine still works quite well, though it could probably do with some maintenance.
If I had any handiwork skills I'd probably rig it up with a wire or something so I could make a battery wagon for it.
Sam why did you throw away Pumpkin Monster, you should've fed him to Scrapman. Do you usually feed Scrapman?
haha that's a good idea! No I don't feed him - he's supernatural, and doesn't need food!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Lovely episode Sam! Can't wait for the next episode to come out!
Great video. I love this series so exiting & fun to watch.
Even if it's too late, I would like to say that the jumping of the wheels may come from some junk stuffed in the pinnions/worm gear, locally filling the gap and forcing the pinion out of the worm gear, resulting in the vibrations. I think that both worm gears are filled, resulting in the pinion disengaging during one rotation of the worm gear and re-engageing in the precedent spot, because of the loco's weight and inertia, resulting in the wheels going back and forth by a few degrees without ever making a full rotation
That's an interesting idea - it's certainly a strange issue that I haven't seen before - definitely something strange going on... I might reclaim this and take another look some time!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I had exactly the same problem with an Arnold 'Schweinenause' in N Gauge. The problem in my case was a cracked pinion gear out of alignment with the worm drive. Replacement of the pinion with a nice new brass gear (cost me €2.95 with €13 postage from Germany) and now it runs like the clappers!
Yay! Salvage or scrap is back I love this series :) this diesel reminds me of rusty but standard gauge
The Little Diesel
This series is absolutely incredible, I can't wrap my head around how you can bring an old engine to a grand runner in such short time! - even if some fail
Do you know the name of the song that you use for the intro? I would be extremely grateful to be able to hear the full version!
Love this series. It honestly feels like something you'd actually see on TV. Also, I'm sorry, but I gotta say it: Still waiting to see if the Heljan 1361 shows up on one of these series xD
Sam, I cannot thank you enough for bringing this back, I adore this show as it’s such a nice break from the normal everyday life, thank you so much, and keep up the great content! - TIDS
haha it's a pleasure - it's been so much fun to make! Hope you enjoy the new season :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Lol this may be my favorite series! I’m impressed with how you manage to turn fixing these into TV-level quality videos!
Thank you so much Felix - I'm so glad you feel that way! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam. Please accept my compliments about the quality of your current video productions, and in particular your full-face introductory commentary in this video where your focus and colour saturation and white balance is absolutely perfect. The container-wall "industrial" backdrop in this video is a welcome change as well (even though I fully appreciate that your normal upstairs loft view in your normal videos provides a consistency that many viewers feel comfortable with). Keep up the outstanding work and I wish you every success in the future.
Thank you so much for your kind words Mark - that's really really appreciated, and I'm so glad you liked the style of this vid! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I feel like this could actually pass as a legitimate model train repair series that you would see on TV, it’s that good!!
Hooray for season 2
Hooray! :D
I have a dockside shunter that runs rough but I have all the time in the world to fix it. Nice!
Just to say that loco was still in production until well into mid 70s. I think yours mays be a 70s one with those style couplings and wire pick up
YES IT'S BACK! I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!
Love the new intro Sam!
Yes! I have been waiting for this series to start again. Sorry Sam, but I am glad the Scrapman finally got a meal. I am sure he was starving. Waiting for the next episode.
I have just started my own business doing this, saving old locos and sending them back out into the world! I think I have seen that dock shunter for sale, did you get it off eBay?
There is a brass bearing and a tiny ball bearing at each end of the armature. The bearing lubrication pads look new - it's easy to lose the ball-bearing when replacing them. The glimpses of a worm drive also suggest uneven wear. I have at least twelve of those bogie units - in various Tri-Ang locomotive model bodies. All they have needed to restore them to good condition is some TLC. The only age failures have been open circuit windings. Lacking a re-magnetiser - any weak magnets have been replaced with modern strong ones.
Setting a 30 minute time limit is too arbitrary. Repairs take time and patience to diagnose and fix cleanly. Often a case or undoing a previous owner's bodge. It is most dispiriting to see potentially good models scrapped in this way.
Glad to see this series return as I enjoyed the 1st season
That's awesome - hope you like this one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Letsss goooo a new episode of salvage or scrap this is has to be some of the best stuff on your channel
Nice video Lord Warwell!
This shall certainly help me fix my DMU!
haha awesome - hopefully you do a better job than I did! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
DAMN, Season TWO
edit: and damn, the first episode and we’ve gotten our first ever scrapped…
Yesss!! :D
Hi Sam. Did you clean the back face of the wheels, as that is where the pick up connects? Also, with this type of power bogie, you can add a jumper wire to improve the electrical pathway. I would check the gearing for crud to address the wobbly wheels. Love this aspect of the hobby. Just got 16 non runners in a job lot, all should be restorable with a few spares or just some TLC. £12 cost average plus £5 average for spares. Well worth the time investment in my opinion. Keep it up.
I recon my dad had this one a long time ago and let me incorporate it onto my old Hornby train set. I think I even remember there being sparks along the wheels as well.
I'll have to dig through his loft and see if he still has it. Part of me wonders if we can get it working on our end.
I know this sounds weird, but what I have done before is cut the cotton swab in half then put it in a power drill for rc car parts. Not sure of it's too rough or not, but it might help.
I've got a two D cell and a two AA cell maglite. Great torches, very robust. I always used to smear vaseline around the threads, never had a swollen batter though some of the rechargeable AA batteries were a bit tight in the mini maglite.
Brilliant to see this again nice one Sam
I remember these being on sale for 32/6d in proper money! Good little loco which used the power bogie from a Transcontinental Series diesel which looked like an F7 from the USA.
Wait, is this the same kinda diesel engine "model" they used for some old Matchbox trains back in the 70s? I own a yellow one of them and the diesel here immediately reminded me of that
This is one of the best model train restoration mini sieres ever, but I am curious where do you buy your locos for this. I would like to buy some and have a stab at fixing some
This feels like a tv show, you should put it on the tv lel
First time seeing the scrapman get fed woooooo!
I have a problem with my hornby dmu 1100 model with the wheels popping out of the bogey sockets have you encountered this before.
Awesome video today Sam made me laugh a bit with the scrap monster lol
Nice to see Season 2 of this, It;s useful to learn how to repair them. I much prefer getting an old junker and making something of it then a new loco these days
Hurray! Salvage or scrap is back.
However, you scrapped a Dock Authority! You cannot do that! I bought exactly the same loco for my 10th birthday from the local toy shop back in 1972. I still have it and it goes much better after me cleaning the axles between the wheels. Anorak time! Your one dates (or should I now say dated?) from about the same time since it has (had?) the smooth wheels. The ones from the 50s and 60s had wheels with grooves across their flanges.
Also, why on earth did someone charge you £17? I would have expected this to be abpout £10, since it was in such rough condition and did not go.
Anyway, I am glad the series is back. I just need counselling over the apparent demise of an old favourite. I am happy to give its remains a good burial / home though.
It cost me just under £3 back in 1972 by the way.
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS IM GONNA ENJOY THIS SALVAGE OR SCRAP PLS MAKE MORE I LOVE THESEEES
Sad to see the Dock Shunter go, I had one back in the mid 1970s, mine was the yellow version but always temperamental. Have you got a working one in your collection? would love to see one running in one of your reviews or live streams.
What actually happened to the dock shunter? Did it just go for parts or into the scrapyard? Great to see season two back , cheers Sam.
I can only presume it’s gone now, into the stomach acids ( of the obscured stomach ) of the Evil Scrapman.
im glad to see this series back
Your unboxing vids are great, but this is of a whole different level. You could easily sell this format to a tv-channel!
By the way, 17 pounds for a locomotive in this bad state is rather expensive…
It's back ladies & gentlemen IT'S BACK!!! , season 2
Cheers Jasper & Willow
It's finally back!! :D
finally, an episode where scrapman eats the locomotive
Absolute joy to see the return of Salvage or Scrap! Brilliant work as always Sam!
Thank you so much - really glad you're pleased to see this back, means all the work paid off :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes finally one that was scrapped!
Mother Of Charles Collett Season 2 Is Gonna Be Really Challenging!
And I Love It!
Hi Sam ,, well done to get it all together and do wot ya did in 30 minutes but ya shooda kept it for parts instead a just givin it to the scrap monster haha.
Keep up the good work and gr8 video's there Sam its keeping me entertained and you can't ask for much than that can ya hey.
Anyhoo Cheers from John in Australia.
I think you time-O-matic machine needs to have a visit from the 'green squad.' Another 30mins and you would have sorted out the problems at the end. I a resurrection on a similar dock shunter. They need a lot of TLC and frequent lubrication on the motor bearings to stop them squealing
YES I LOVE THIS SERIES
Good work sam
19:35
shunter: help meeee!!!!
sam: sorry i can't
evil scrapman: where is some scrap
sam: here ya go
shunter: nooo! ahhhh!!!!
evil scrapman: "munching" "buuurrp" ha ha ha
You really improved on the editing and visual of this episode of the new series definitely better than the last series
Very unfortunate however I'm glad the scrapman finally gets a decent meal for once
I really love this series!
Hi Sam, love this series. Shame the shunter had to be scrapped. I’ve just put my triang dock shunter “back on track” as you’d say and really enjoyed doing it as it was very poor condition. I got it from a job lot of stuff I only paid £10 for and I’ve really enjoyed making yt videos on it!
Great video, Cheers Dan :)
Hi Sam, interesting, My guess was that the wheel bearings were badly worn, this lets the pinion pivot around on the worm. The Achilles heal of this type of motor bogie
Bearings with a small press should be replaceable , though you might need to turn your own on a lathe Proper repair work needs longer than half an hour if faults are more complex. Alternatively the motor bogie yields more parts for other ones ( similar used in the Blue Pullman for example ). The body playing around with Black Beetle or similar motor drives and fitting DCC can make this normal manic rats run more controllably
where did you get the stl file for the couplers and buffers from?
awesome. everyone likes this series, including me. keep going my friend!
Thank you so much - lots more to come! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Well, we were all curious what would happen if the scrap man won.
RIP Dock Shunter.
That aside, so good to see more of this series!
Wow I didn't want expect this series to come back after the King Class but here we are. Sadly this cute little dock shunter was the first victim to the evil scrapman. A big shame really I like the Dock Shunter. But hey you did your best and technically it "worked" slightly 😅 but yeah I really like this series and that last time every loco made it back out was quite unexpected for me. Keep up the great work Sam 👍
MORE ! Fantastic content
Fantastic series.
Yay! More Salvage or Scrap! I missed this show! :D
Thanks my friend - hope you enjoy the second season! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
How do you have this many locos for the series
Hey Sam, Where abouts did you get your re magnitiser from?
Thanks
George
I think the "I am the Scrapman!" bit sounds like something for Scrapman merchandise.
13:34.
Sam: “You know what folks…this is not going to be a smooth runner….there is something strange…”
My brain, immediately:
“In the neighbourhood”
🤣
"Who you gonna call?"
"Feed Me, Feed Me" says the Scrap Monster. "Please, I'm Starving".
YES! I love the salvage or scrap shows
That scrap monster sure had a great lunch for today! Small little diesel with extra dirt seasoning! 😂
haha he sure did - ultimate delicacy those dock shunters!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
As much as we don’t want to see model trains being scrapped; it was oddly satisfying finally seeing the Scrapman finally being fed 😅
It's back
You should get yourself some silver Sharpie pens. They are great, and dry almost immediately.
Yeeeeeesssss!!!!!!!! Season 2!! Yeah Baby!!!
Bout time an engine was scrapped. And this season seems better too from everything new. Like how the engines are showes in the intro. Hats off to you Sam 👍🎩
So glad this is back!
Thank you so much - hope you like it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yay salvage or scrap is back here
man, thats the first time he's been fed ever, poor dudes probably starvin 🤣🤣🤣
Because you set a time limit there wasn't much checking of the gear transmission condition (missing teeth, irregular gear tooth shape, and bearing condition) which have probably caused the rough running.
finally after a eternity i could see the evil scrap man feast
and it was creepy yet worth it
SEASON 2 LETS GOOOO
So out of curiosity since this is the first locomotive to be "scrapped" what will you do with it now. Will you actually go back and try and fix it up, sell it, or what do you intend to do. Last year you managed to save all of them from the evil scrap man so I am curious.
The evil scrap man has scrapped it. Gone forever
@@raghavkalyan17 or is it, maybe the scrap man really isn't evil and uses the "scrap" to rejuvenate the locomotive into something new. I know I know putting way to much thought into it but hey I thought it be fun
@@PennsyPappas interesting theory. maybe their just misunderstood. shouldn't judge on appearance.
Honestly I kinda wish I could send you my old chessie disel and a little shunted I have that have had motor problems for many years. I’ve been trying to think of ways to fix them both.
Normally I would just grin and bear it, but the little dock authority switcher is so like my fave Athearn "Hustler" from the same time period. Is it really in the wheelie bin ? We have a chop over here from Canada who does reparations on model trains also. I don't think he has a 3-D printer though.
Decent video Sam I like the change to better lighting when you are working on the model.
Thanks David - yeah I thought that was very important!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hello, are you ever going to review a Class 91/InterCity 225? The 91’s have been released now
NO!!!! That is a Tri-ang Dock Shunter! Save it! You can do it Sam.
