  • Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his UA-cam channel.

I have been working through the books and the courses, and I really think folks are taking the “pound” too literally. My stomach is sensitive to many vegetables, so I have been adding slowly as I can tolerate. Soup is an easy way to get veggies. I have been making soups with beans, veggies, and a little protein. I do pretty well with Sonoma Brinery’s fermented sauerkraut (no chemicals), so I do a bit at dinner. I have been eating a lot of fruit because I tolerate it well. I have been dropping some weight. I am almost two years out, and though I have had stalls, I haven’t quite stopped losing yet. Also, while I wouldn’t advise anyone else to do it, I never did protein shakes. I just can’t. My surgeon let me start on full liquids on postop day 2, and I would blend soup with meat and veggies. I did just fine. I never met protein requirements of the hospital’s program, but my surgeon was fine with my progress and my labs. In fact, I had to discontinue my b12 supplement because my b12 was far too high.

I had the same question after reading Station 2 of your book. Super helpful video. How much daily protein intake do you recommend for a female post gastric sleeve? Thanks so much Dr. Weiner!

Is there a private Facebook group for those following your guidelines? Most FB “support” groups have a “you-do-you” and “no food police” attitude where people flaunt their poor choices. I’m looking for accountability and good nutritional advice.

I find I crave veggies ( almost two months out). I typically have veggies with my protein just because if I’m still hungry after I have something ready to go.

I’m 9 years out from RNY surgery. In 9 years I’ve kept all but 9 lbs off. It’s true! But I still can’t digest meat and vegetables well??? Ground hamburger is all that will digest. Raw vegetables never digest and some cooked vegetables ( broccoli)won’t digest either......... Why?

it is a absurd question who the heck eats a pound of vegtables in one day even if you had no surgery..

    • @cabelltech
      @cabelltech 4 роки тому +4

roseforyoubabe It is not an “absurd” question, in my opinion. It sounds like a question coming from someone who wants to eat healthfully and successfully with the gastric sleeve. A pound of raw vegetables seems like a huge amount but once cooked in soup or steamed, for example, it can be more manageable. Throwing in fresh veggies and fruits while making a smoothie is also a great way to get some in. Thinking about how you can add veggies and fruit to your usual meals can be a fun challenge. Dr Weiner gave a good answer. I would also add that you shouldn’t expect to go from no veggies to a pound of veggies overnight. Give yourself time to experiment with different foods and ways to cook them. It’s taken me about a year or more to educate myself. It is an effort though, for sure, but it has made me feel much better.

@@cabelltech it is absurd because after bariatric surgery your stomach is so much smaller then a normal stomach i can't imagine anyone eating a pound of anything in a single day let alone a pound of veggies a day..even 5 years out..

@@roseforyoubabe I see what your saying. I am almost 3 months post op RNY and I am still working to get in al my protein. Even with 3-4 meals a day, I don't always eat 4 oz of food (at each meal) ... and I certainly don't eat veggies (which is fine according to Dr. Weiner's chart). I hope over the next 9 months I will be able to incorporate some veggies into my meals, but, I can't even envision eating more than 4 oz a day.

You always need to focus on protein. It's essential.

Actually not true. Protein is important but when someone eats more protein then they need it converts to fat. I eat my weights required protein and then eat lots of produce. I thought like you did then I struggled with 10-25 lbs of regain. I realized more produce keeps me full and I laid off the protein.
