Wow!!! Thank you for this video!!!! I am 5 days post op from the gastric sleeve and so far it’s been a rough recovery to the point where I’ve started to regret this decision. This video was such a relief to listen to/watch. It gave me a clearer understanding of the journey and what’s to come and how to go about things. My pre-op weight was 236 lbs and I am currently at 221 lbs, though I am having trouble with protein shake and fluid intake due to nausea, this motivated me to try harder and more consistently. It’s a big relief to know that things will get better as the weeks and months progress!
Me too, day 5 and regretting, so hungry, my case (400 pounds pre op, and in 5 days 394, yes, a hard case...), I was put on liquid diet for almost a month! Every 30 min a sip ( 30 ml ) of sugar free yogurt, no lactose or the water of pear juice or tea, or broth. It is not working as for hunger and cravings. Well...I hope I feel better in a week or so, because it is lonely boring repeat every day :| and metal stiches pain... I would not mind to have a shake like that, strawberries and banana and spinach. But it is not on the list. Damn!
2022 and this is probably the best informative video I have seen so far. I'm one month PO today and still in the learning process so thank you for this!
You learn pretty quick what not to do. I have always slept with a glass of water next to my bed. Last night still half asleep, began to chug that water... I'm 5 days out from RNY and learnt a very valuable lesson. Love your vids. I re-watch every few weeks.
@@k0nFeTa You won't die, but you will run into issues if you drink while eating. You run risk of Dumping Syndrome, washing food out of your new stomach before digestive acids are produced, vomiting up the food you just ate, and other digestive issues. It's why they advise you to not drink at least 30 minutes before a meal, during a meal, and 30 minutes after you finish eating.
I think of my new tummy like a newborn. You don't feed popcorn and steaks to babies, so be slow and soft foods, it's like stepping on wet concrete if it's not ready you will know. Thanks for the video! 💖💖
DEAR Dr. Matthew, I had just undergone the gastric sleeve only 6 days ago and I must say I feel great! to say was my post op visit and I lost 20 pounds. I am now on puree and vitamins and am looking forward to the new me. I also want to thank you for lending so much clarity in your gastric sleeve infomercial. Great job.
Hello Dr Matthew. My surgery is planned for 8/18/14 and your videos have been teaching a lot, Thank you very much. God bles you and your family. All the best,
For anyone here in the U.K., TESCO sells low fat sugar free protein shakes with 50g of protein. They are 320 calories but this is for a whole 500ml bottle and you only need one a day for all your protein.
@@alohalivin556 it is definitely metabolized, it just has no affect on muscle protein synthesis anymore than 30 or 40 would. From then on there's no bigger spike but the body still uses protein for other things like all sorts of repair. For muscle growth definitely space it out though😊
Niceee I can’t wait to get the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery soon which ever my dr decides which is better for me I did my research about the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery for many years now and I feel like I’m ready to get it done 🥰❤️
This was so helpful in my consideration of having the gastric sleeve. I feed my family, and strive myself to eat an unprocessed plant based diet. I was worried that there would be too much of a focus on meat and processed protein shakes long term after surgery.
Phil Smith, it's not about the length of the stomach, it's about the food entering directly into the intestine and bypassing the intestinal enzymes and bile after a gastric bypass, but not after a sleeve gastrectromy. Long pouches increase the rate of ulcer formation after gastric bypass surgery, so we try to keep them relatively small.
Thank you for posting this video. I’m 2 weeks post op RNY today, and was actually just hospitalized for dehydration so I’m starting over at phase 1. It’s nice to be able to watch this video and see examples of what I can have. I’m looking forward mostly to the beans💜those have always been a huge part of my diet especially because my diet has been primarily plant based for many years. I can see myself coming back to this video many times for a refresher👍🏻
This is highly informative. I'm going in for gastric sleeve surgery in less than two weeks. Lots of anxiety. I will keep this video in my archives for reference.
I can not tell you how helpful this video was! I'm a week post op and I have struggling with what to eat. This was exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!
@@zhazha2588 I am three years post op (GB). I went low carb early on (month 3). Sometimes i eat a lot of low carb veggies, but more often not. My body does not handle them well. What an amazing experience. At my ideal weight (lost 140 lbs) and put on a lot of muscle. Good luck to you.
Thank you Doctor what an informative video. About to start my journey on a Gastric Sleeve op. Your video has opened my eyes to much and filled me with the confidence to look beyond the surgery and to the final outcome.
Doctor, I really appreciate the time and effort you put in your videos, thank you so much for sharing your valuable knowledge. You can even imagine how helpful your videos have been for me. Thank you so much from Colombia 😊
19:24 Thank you!!! I've heard concerns about air getting into the post-op pouch as the reason to not use a straw ever again. I appreciate the idea that you can listen to your body and trying what works for you. This diet is quite different compared with other programs' diet recommendations. This whole video so far is fascinating. I like hearing different people's ideas and thoughts.
I have gastrectomy sleeve 7days back on phase 1. My major challenges is taking other tablets for Hypertension, Diabetes, Arthritis, Hypothyroidism. I cannot take them at once but in divided sessions. In overall, I have learnt a lot.
Carbohydrates and insulin """"" The most important part is to cut back on Carbohydrates , wheat , potatoes sugars and starches (carbs). These are the foods that stimulate secretion of insulin the most . If you didn't know already, insulin is the main fat storage hormone in the body. When insulin goes down, "fat" has an easier time getting out of the fat stores in your body and the body starts burning fats instead of carbs. Another benefit of lowering insulin is that your kidneys shed excess sodium (salt) and water out of your body, which reduces bloat and unnecessary water weight ( adema ) and its healthy for your kidneys . If you have "sleep apnea" or you go to bed later than 11:00pm its almost impossible to lose weight . Also stress and being angy stressed out it will elevates your "insulin" for 12 hours and you will gain weight 100%." Sleeping" and stress is very important for weight weight loss and a low carb diet . Sleep controls "all your hormones" like HGH ..no sleep you never lose weight . a Good diets for people when they are insulin resistant is the Paleo diet , adkins diet ,ketogenic diet or eat high protein and low carb diet . Alcohol is the worst for the liver and to lose weight . . The "liver health" and Sleeping is the most very import to lose weight .Best supplements for the liver health is choline ,TMG , and Alph-lipoic acid , eating Red Beets and taking 3 to 9 grams of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in divided doses every day helps lose weight . Also its very important to keep your "homocystenes" levels down below 6 . Best to lower your "homocysteins" is to take vitamin B-6 100 mg a day ,B-12 and (( choline or "" TMG."" great for a sick fatty liver !and for people who drink achohol )). ...All sweetners "elevate insulin " so does "Stevia" ..yes Stevia . If You're serious about losing weight get off your sweet addiction ...no sweets , no "Stevia" ,no honey ,no artificial sweetners ..give it up sugar sweet addiction . To keep insuline down and healthy healthy heart take 400 mg of magnesium two times a day morning and night ,Magnesium is very important for good health also to keep "homocysteins" down so you dont get heart disease and cancer . ---In the 1940s, the agricultural chemists found that they could fatten their animals faster if they poisoned their metabolic systems with an anti-thyroid drug. The found the animals would get fat on very little food. Yet, the drug turned out to leave a carcinogenic residue in the meat. Farmers soon found out that corn and soybeans containing polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) would do the same as the anti-thyroid drugs and suppress the respiration of the animals and make them get fat on very little food. In the process they found that they were getting these yellow-fat diseases and brain degenerations (degeneration of the gonads, infertility, and so on). Around the same time the medical people noticed that the cholesterol was lowered in the process of eating a lot of these polyunsaturated fats. And that led to the spreading of the marketing of unsaturated fats to the human food supply, rather than just for the fattening of farm animals. And since people didn't want to gain weight on the least amount of food, they needed a new reason for selling their fats to humans. And, lowering cholesterol became the excuse in humans. But the agriculturists knew all through the 1940s that corn oils and soy oils were very fattening, and eventually, very toxic. But since they sold their animals as soon as they reached a marketable size, they didn't care (if they died later; they were killing them before they had the chance to die of the degenerative diseases)." -RP Bottom line: Although, the polyunsaturated fats will lower cholesterol (by suppressing the immune system), one of their main functions is to fatten animals, including you if you consume them, on lower calories. This is why farmers use high polyunsaturated fats foods like corn and soy to fatten their animals. What foods are high in polyunsaturated oils ? Vegetables, seed and nut oils. Nuts, seeds, soy, corn, fatty fish like salmon, omega 3 and 6 oils, fish oil, and animals that are fed a high polyunsaturated diet . ............................www.amazon.ca/Obesity.../dp/1771641258/ref=sr_1_1...

What a great presentation! I've learned more here then in all the six of my weight loss management hour sessions. I've taken lots of notes from your video and can't wait to implement them. My surgery date is upcoming May 23, 2017. Wish me well and thank you so much for this video!!!
I was getting so discouraged with all the fake food they tell me to have right now I am 9 days out gastric bypass RNY. thank you for showing some whole food options. right now I am drinking bone broth and still can't drink protin shakes they just hurt.
Same here! I was very depressed when I saw a list of mainly sugar free and dairy products (I’m lactose intolerant and artificial sweeteners hurt my stomach) I didn’t realize I could make my own protein smoothie. That alone will save me through this process!
Thank you for speaking on the chemical foods and overly processed stuff. Im doing this to kick the processed foods and eat clean and healthy again.. it was discouraging to see all the artificial stuff being recommended for post op
This video is great!! Really informative and also makes a lot of sense. I am from the uk and scheduled for my VSG in august 2015. although i am planning on following my surgeons dietary instructions post op, its great to try to educate yourself further and maximise your knowledge so you fully understand what's involved and be on point with the choices you make after surgery in order to achieve the best results. So ive got a lot out of this video especially about adopting plant based proteins into my diet and how to introduce HEALTHY carbs. Also great advice about making totaly fresh and natural protein shakes. I do think i will need the whey based protein shakes for a while after my op as getting that protein in early is quie difficult but i will definately aim to substitute the fresh ones in once i can tolerate them as it just makes sense to eat organically and naturally than to put foods that you hardly can pronounce the ingrediants into your body. I belong to an online support group called bariatric pal which is a really great source of advice and support for people thinking or actually have had weightloss surgery, and i will post the link to this video on there as i feel its a great source of info that deserves to be shared. And thankyou again for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us.
Stephanie Smith You're welcome. I have my patients use the whey protein for the first month or two since it's difficult to get enough protein otherwise. Good Luck!
25:05 VERY true! I can kill a thermos of water especially if I've done a lot of walking, and it is a big post-op concern for me. I haven't had the surgery yet, but I'm getting into the routine now of sipping.
Thank you so much for this video..Back in 1997 I had a version of lap band..mesh was used. The surgery didn't work for me so now I am about to have RNY. My reason for this comment is I have a B12 deficiency, Most don't really understand this, I am trying to recover from what this has done to my body..it's horrible and has changed my life in a bad way. Back then I didn't get the information I needed to take care of myself. Now I am informed. Take your vitamins!
AmyACox Sounds like you had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) - I've had good success converting these patients to RNY. Good luck and take your vitamins and eat your vegetables!
thank you doc for this video. some things are not equal to What my doc wants for me but I know you have to go with who is taking care of you. I look forward to further videos. vsg 7/26/17 so excited!
Tracey matthews I'm feeling great. I had to start walking the day of surgery which is a challenge for my bad knees but I'm doing my best. I have another week at home b4 going back to work. I wasn't able to drink water but they gave me SF vitamin water which was great.
Tracey matthews How are you doing, Tracey? I am scheduled for 10/2. Gettin' close! This is my last weekend of super low carb dieting. I will continue this diet until next Saturday, then clears til midnight next Sunday!! Sooo excited.
Sleeves will cause rapid emptying of the stomach which can cause painful symptoms that are similar to what gastric bypass patients experience. However, the low blood pressure, dizziness and diarrhea that some gastric bypass patients experience after drinking sugar containing beverages will not be experienced by sleeve patients because their anatomy remains intact and there's no diversion of the bile and digestive enzymes as there is in a gastric bypass.

I am getting ready to begin this journey. I am in the early phases of the process but I am studying, watching and learning everything I can. I have watched literally hundreds of hours of videos and learned a lot. I am impressed by your video and it is exactly what I needed because I am vegetarian and eat eggs and fish and have been hearing that I can never get enough protein in my diet after WLS because I don't eat meat. I am using your video as a diet bible afterwards. It is exactly perfect for me. Thank you for putting so much detail in your video.

Thank you for sharing this information. As a recent VSG patient, I was not enthusiastic about all of the artificial/processed foods that are suggested! I was a green smoothie lover for a long time, and my kids love them, too. I'm an OR nurse. What are your thoughts for making sure I hit my fluid targets at work? Being stuck in a room will make things difficult. (I figure I can pop out to the scrub sink, wash my hands, and take a quick handful every so often between breaks? I'm going to ask my surgeon at my next appointment.
I'm 4 weeks post op. I can tolerate all foods I've tried including chicken. Lately I've noticed I get hungry very often. What could be causing me to be hungry so often? How often should I be eating? I have not lost much weight last few weeks maybe a pound a week which is disheartening. Please any help would be appreciated.
Dr. Weiner, you are very informative. I am undergoing the Sleeve in two weeks. I will follow your regime. I am good with following directions especially when it comes to my health. I'm 4 11' at a 240 lbs., curvy and my goal is to get down to 145-150. I've been there and I must say Dr. Weiner, I didn't look bad at all (smiling). Thank you for sharing to your fan base. Well done! HELLO!! I am 1 month post sleeve and I'm struggling. I've been dehydrated, nausea, and more. My doctor have extended every phase because I can't tolerate anything. Everything makes me sick. This video is helpful but everything is nasty even water. I'm thinking of starting from scratch. I don't want to regret my surgery but things are rough...
Danielle Lewis I'm in my second week post op and I'm having the same problems. I'm still on clear liquids and I start the full liquid soon. Everything is gross. I have a lot of discomfort between the breast. The doctor says that some people are eating food, but my doctor says I have 3 more weeks for the soft food. I hope you're feeling better.
Danielle Lewis hi Danielle. I'm 20 days post op and I'm still struggling!!!!! My throats feels irritated and I am struggling to take in everything! Have you overcome this phase yet and what advice do you have. I'm feeling really discouraged right now.
+Anna Sanchez the first month can be tough for around 5% of sleeve patients and 10% of gastric bypass patients. There are a lot of tricks that can help patients get through it more comfortably. Scopolamine patches, levsin, yogurt based protein shakes and other changes can make a big difference. It doesn't last forever, usually it's much better within a month of surgery
I'm thinking of gastric bypass in the next few months/year. I need to have myself well prepared beforehand as to what it will be like and the pitfalls to avoid if possible. Ive met a surgeon. Im scared of the fact that in 10% or so of patients that there is no weight loss or very little. This video was very helpful in outling what it will be like post surgery. I'm on Ozempic at present. It's not going great as I'm finding it difficult to get used to it. All the side effects even after 6 weeks. The constant nausea wears you down but the worst is the the light headedness and weakness when Im out and about. I could cope when I was off work postsurgery (unrelated) but first day back I threw up in the classroom. I had list 2 stone in that 6 weeks. I took a rest as it was near the end if the sch yr and back on it again now. I have 8 weeks to get used to it before September and I hope I can stay on it.
love your tutorials they have been so helpful I'm 24 days out from gastric bypass and have had no dumping syndrome but again I have followed to the dot my eating plan. can easily drink 74 Oz. of h2o.
Many patients don't have dumping syndrome, however you need to drink sugary liquids to know for sure - hopefully you haven't done this, so the jury may still be out
I don't even want to try out having anything sugary. Why even experiment if I feel so good with out all that gunk. On June 18th will be a month from my surgery I was wondering if I can drink this shake you prepared in this tutorial it really looks yummy, I'm on phase 3 of my diet? If able too I will be omitting the banana for some reason I can't have it. I tried to have just a tiny piece in my protein shake and it made me a little nauseated and my heart beat was thru the roof and I really don't like that feeling so I'm avoiding this fruit all together. Love your tutorials.
@@anushkapremchand1349 Hello it will be 3 years since my surgery this may and I feel really good. I stopped losing weight at 209 and my doctor said it was all up to me to be able to be able to keep losing weight. So since then I've been working out consistently and I'm down to 165. I do have dumping syndrome if I eat something sweet or over eat and let me tell you it feels like I'm dying. But I don't eat or drink juice, soda or anything that sweet. Remember this surgery is only a tool.
Crimson TideGal I'm not a doctor but my general understanding is that 8oz of fruit juice is equivalent to the sugar in 5-6 (or even more) of the actual fruit. The fruit itself also contains fiber which helps you feel full and fruit juice has none.
Thank you Dr. W, wish I would've found you before the surgery however I had it done in Mexicali with Dr. Humberto Sanchez Limon I couldn't believe that my insurance wouldn't cover it they call it investigative surgery so they denied me so I had to go to Mexico to save some money couldn't afford a America Anyways enough of that surgery went well I had some small complications because I burst small blood vessel the IV miss so my hand swelled up to an elephant, but besides that no pain afterwards just of course a little sore and it's today I going to go take out the stitches and I'm going to stay in contact with you and take off on my new life. I'll be back in Los Angeles tonight I was just wondering about aftercare since I had it in Mexico I won't have any after checkups after he takes out the stitches today Thank you for all the information and direction and care and you speak my language! 😇
Peter, aftercare is a critical piece of the puzzle. You may be surprised - many US surgeons offer aftercare to other surgeon's patients, even those from Mexico.
hello I'm considering weight loss surgery and your videos have been very helpful and full of lots of information , I once lost over 200 lbs with the weight watchers program but after leaving the program I have gained a lot of it back, went back to weight watchers several times but have not had the success as before once again thank you
This posting is the only one that by a doctor says you cannot have dumping with a sleeve, you can call me what you like. Notice i will not stoop as low as you have in calling names. But people who have had no bariatric surgery can have dumping. Please do your research and never ever believe everything you have been told, it makes you look less than you should be,
Hello Dr. Weiner, First off, I would like to take this time to thank you for sharing such vital and important information regarding Bariatric Surgery. My surgeon is not a very approachable and polite doctor which can make it very difficult to communication and find out important information. Just from the first few minutes of this video, I see how it has proven to be so helpful. Kudos to you. Now I do have some questions, that I would like to ask you. I am 6 days Post-Opt (March 12, 2015) was my big day. I want to know: 1) For how long will the pain last? 2) When can I take a shower or bathe? 3) What am I allowed to eat? Liquid diet only? 4) When will I be able to start eating solid food again? A month, 2 months? 5) When will I start to see weight loss? 6) Is exercise necessary and if so, how often do I need to exercise? Thanks Dr. Weiner for your attention regarding my questions and have bless day.
It would be helpful if you would indicate - Phase 1 is day 2 to ......, Phase 2 is say day 4 to ............. or whatever it is. And of course, this would be for patients doing great after the surgery. Patients struggling would have to consult their surgeons and adhere to his/her advice. Please help!

I plan to lose some weight beforehand and prepare myself for the post-op diet/lifestyle change by eating the protein and vegetable smoothies, lots of vegetables and beans as you've outlined in this video. I'm too fat to exercise vigorously right now but I do try to move around throughout the day and get in at least 8,000 to 10,000 steps (I have a step-counter app) per day.

+Dr. Matthew Weiner It actually makes sense. Thank you for the answer and your time.

Carbohydrates and insulin """""
The most important part is to cut back on Carbohydrates , wheat , potatoes sugars and starches (carbs).

Good Luck!

Emily King, dumping only happens to some patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery. It does not happen to sleeve gastrectomy patients
that is very untrue! i know many sleevers, including myself who get dumping.

Dr. Matthew Weiner ,
How are you now?
Thank You so much this information is awesome 10 days out!!
Congrats

love your tutorials they have been so helpful I'm 24 days out from gastric bypass and have had no dumping syndrome but again I have followed to the dot my eating plan. can easily drink 74 Oz.

I was told you should not have very many fruits because of the sugar they contain
+Erva Reamsbottom lots of people say this, but all the evidence points toward fruit as a good way to stay thin
Then why can't you have fruit juice that has no sugar added?
Crimson TideGal I'm not a doctor but my general understanding is that 8oz of fruit juice is equivalent to the sugar in 5-6 (or even more) of the actual fruit. The fruit itself also contains fiber which helps you feel full and fruit juice has none.
Real fruit has fiber that fruit juices do not. That's the main difference.

Anyways enough of that surgery went well I had some small complications because I burst small blood vessel the IV miss so my hand swelled up to an elephant, but besides that no pain afterwards just of course a little sore and it's today I going to go take out the stitches and I'm going to stay in contact with you and take off on my new life.
I'll be back in Los Angeles tonight
I was just wondering about aftercare since I had it in Mexico I won't have any after checkups after he takes out the stitches today
Thank you for all the information and direction and care and you speak my language! 😇
Peter, aftercare is a critical piece of the puzzle. You may be surprised - many US surgeons offer aftercare to other surgeon's patients, even those from Mexico.

I got good information from this video dear doctor thankyou so much.......

Hello Dr. Weiner,
First off, I would like to take this time to thank you for sharing such vital and important information regarding Bariatric Surgery. I want to know:
1) For how long will the pain last?

+Sophia Fernandes everyone should go at their own pace and learn to understand their new stomach. Going by a prescribed plan as you request prevents you from doing the hard work of learning how and what to eat.
Oh I did have another question or did I miss it somewhere ....bariatric vitamins for life yes or no? Or buy over counter or? You see, when you have Medicare insurance as a secondary one really has very limited guidance from the health center and staff and even Dr....I've to find my own answers in the vast sea of online info. Yours is the very and let me say that again, the very best info out there...I'm more prepared and armed than I could have been the to YOU DR WEINER...hats off to gou. Dine the

I have a 21 day clear liquid and pre made protein drink diet AFTER surgery! The nutritionist said people go a little nuts, without nutrients... anyone would! I am about 7 weeks post op and super nervous. Too bad I am not in your area, thanks for the great information.
you're welcome, good luck!

Thank you, Dr. Weiner. I'm considering gastric bypass sugery.
Sounds like you're on the right track!
