  • Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his UA-cam channel.

Dr. Weiner did my RNY surgery here in Michigan and I am 4 years out. I went from 233 to 137. I am quite thin at 5'8". I don't have any issues with eating too much. I believe I am appropriately hungry and eat and stop when satisfied. I do my best eating a low carb diet and enjoy it. I check my blood sugar often to see what foods might cause a jump in BG. I will keep an eye out for this 4-5 year weight increase.

Thanks. Very interesting. I had gastric bypass surgery 28 years ago. I weighed 264. 5’5”” one year later I was at 164. I had a small gain to 172. I maintained that weight for many years. To day after cutting calories I am at 155. I am working to hit to 149. The ting that helps me is the weekly weigh in with my husband. Both are in the best shape we have been in for many years. I still need to loose a few more lbs to get the suggested BMI. This bothers me as I am looking very thin. I do have loose skin but no funds for a tummy tuck. My age is 78 an live a very full life. My only health problems are arthritis , and AFib . PS I am a junk food junkie and live on diet soda. I know both are bad for me.

Good on you. I had my bypass 29 years ago. I can eat more than1 1/2 cups. I try not to push it, as I don’t want to stretch out my new stomach. I eat what ever I want just in smaller portions. I seldom fell deprived. I do count calories, but I have plenty to eat. My one problem is I still love sugar, even when I makes me feel sick, I will consume more than I should. For years if I just cut out the sugar I will loose weight. My prayers go with you. It is hard but well wort the struggle.

Hey Dr. Weiner! Are there bigger neurohormonal changes from the bypass vs sleeve? Are there any studies showing such data? I was wondering if bypassing the duodanal section is better.
I'm on track with my hospital but I don't know which one I want. The hospital is also a part of a study called BEST where they choose which one I have to have an equal number of each type for a ten year review. But I can choose to opt out, but I'm super ambivalent right now.

I agree injury/ surgery : with a bad emotionally abusive relationship and break up caused me gain back 35 pounds. My surgery was 2/12/2013 Pre surgery I was 225 pounds. Lowest post op weight 134 pounds.
I got back “ on the wagon “ journaled all
my food and water intake. Read labels if food. Went back to gym ( 4-6 times per week). I weigh daily. ( most do not recommend this but it works for me) I have lost those 35 pounds and back to 134 pounds. I realized that I am accountable for me. I go annually to my bariatric surgeon and he dies a full battery of labs: CBC, comprehensive metabolic panel. Vitamin B, D , thiamine PTH abs TSH ( I have hypothyroidism : auto- immune) I go to a T. O. P. S group and they tell me that I cheated and took the easy way out . Cruel. Another person had weight loss surgery and she has gained back a lot. But she does not truly follow abs healthy lifestyle and diet abs exercise plan.

Hi, how are you ? This bariatric surgery is a medical error, just as errors occur in any other profession. I have two acquaintances of mine who died because of this surgery. One had little stomach and when she went to eat a snack, the little stomach she had was unable to digest it, and then she got severe pains in her stomach, feeling sick and died. The other acquaintance of mine, became weak and when she ate, her intestines could no longer retain nutrients from food and she died of malnutrition. And when she was alive, she kept passing out fainting from weakness, even eating and eating right. Her stomach became small and so the body did not absorb food for it to survive. With so little stomach left in it, they cut a part of it out, and didn’t keep the tissue to be frozen, so that if she eventually needed to undo the surgery, put it back in it again. So how do you do it? And there was another one that I forgot to mention. That the internal scar of the surgery became very thin and broke, causing her stomach to fall into her body and she died instantly. I do not know how they have not yet banned this surgery, with so many people who give problems, after they went through it. Not to say them all. Be careful. Why go through this? Dieting, without being radical and exercising, is the best thing. And examine the patient to see why he doesn't lose weight. I currently, when I eat only two tablespoons of rice on the plate and eat at regular times. It helped me a little to maintain the weight. Hugs.

I can't diet anymore. I was able to do that easily but for whatever reason I literally can't control my apatite. I listened to all the advices but none of them work anymore. It's frustrating (losing all the progress slowly is painful) but I don't know what to do. any advice (because you sound like a very well-spoken person).

Hi Mike, how are you? I am on a diet that, of all, was the only one that is helping me maintain a little weight. I'll put the video down here for you to watch, but it's in the Portuguese language. I don't know if you can watch it in English, but summarizing the diet, you have to assemble the dish differently. You have to mentally divide it into two different parts. Or in half. Right and left. On the right side of the plate, you can only put two tablespoons of rice, pasta or another carbohydrate and on the top a protein. On the other side of the plate, on the left side, just put salads or vegetables or both. If after lunch or dinner you still feel hungry, eat more salad and vegetables, until you are full. Cut sodas or juices that have a lot of sugar, I for example just drink water. But if you want you can have something else, a diet soda, understand? Or even a normal one if you take it from time to time. That's it. And make meals at regular times, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I also cut the butter and margarine, which used to be on the bread for creamy cheese that has less fat. If it gives you hypoglycemia or the urge to eat something else, you can have a sweet or salty, but then go back to the diet. The important thing is to eat these things from time to time, not always. That's what I'm doing. As time goes by your stomach has shrunk a little and you are feeling less hungry. And it is also good to do physical activity. A hug. I believe that when the person gets older, the organism does not work the same right when the person is younger, it gets slow. I think that's why there are so many obese people today. I saw a report that said that they genetically changed the wheat flour that makes bread, so that wheat grows faster. They said that in the past wheat had much more protein than carbohydrate. Now because of that most of it is carbohydrate. I think that's also why people get so fat. Wheat flour is the staple of the diet. It is not possible to eliminate wheat flour, it is everywhere. Just reduce consumption. A hug.

dr Rocha. This doctor invented a diet for diabetic people, through food to reduce the excess sugar in the blood of diabetics and serves to lose weight too. Or reduce the amount of them, the carbohydrates, to a healthy level, without extremes, so that the person does not feel ill afterwards. Some diabetics reversed it in the 4 month by doing this diet. There is no more diabetes, but others still have it. Because he is against some surgeries, because he said that depending on the surgery the person gets even worse instead of improving. He is afraid. Because there are surgeries that are not reversed afterwards, it is very difficult. Then they don't move because the person gets worse. They don't know how to undo sometimes. It is rare to achieve anything. But sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the surgery they do to correct another one, their theory is wrong, and the person ends up getting even worse. And they sometimes don't know nor that. So you have to be careful. Um hug !! 🙂 ✨✨✨✨

@@tiagot6516 Hey Tiago, i'm fine thanks 😊. What you said made me speechless. It's very well researched and has some vey good advices that I haven't heard before. That mental type of diet seems like a very interesting topic that may work very well with people that bengie eat like me. I also believe that what you said about wheat was very true especially because my country's diet relies a lot on wheat products (that made most people unhealthy and have bad eating habits). The physical activity part is also right (because of dopamine rush after exercising) it's effective at stopping bengie eating.
As for the surgery part I considered having a Gastric sleeve but what you said is right (a lot of ppl do revert to old habits) and the price is somewhat high in my country, so I am not planning on having that surgery any time in the future.
I want to that you very much for that wonderful informative response. I really appreciate thak you put in the effort to help me with my problem. You're an amazing person. At last a Hug 😊✨

I had gastric bypass (laparoscopic) in 2001. I was 280 and I did loose all the weight. I have gained a lot back, I’m now at 205 18 yrs later. If you don’t do the work you won’t be successful hence I am now at 205. The positive side was the huge weight loss however my body created this anxious feeling. I would get blood work done to get my vitamins checked out because I had no idea what was wrong with me. After many tests done and I was normal another And years later I realized it was anxiety. Not just a passing anxiety I mean it affected everything. I know now this surgery affected my nervous system in some way. Years later I am fine but I will say I struggled.

Susie T perhaps it was low blood sugar, not anxiety.
