Masterpiece is a bit much. Its a good anime but it has its problems. Mostly with every character being almost completely one dimensional.

Light's name is actually just Light! Kira comes from the English term "Killer", but with a Japanese accent/Romanization
Which they would have picked up on easier with the English dub.

So Light surname is Yagami, which means god of the night in Japanese.The contrast between the name and the surname is a metaphor to accentuate the duality of this character, who believe in supreme justice but apply it by doing something we usually consider evil, such as killing
His name is Light Yagami (Light first name, Yagami last name). In Japan, people call strangers by their last name and close people with their first name, so you'll see his family and friends call him Light while teacher call him Yagami.
Also in Japanese R and L are the same letter (they have neither R nor L in the alphabet, actually they have a letter that is in between an R and a L), usually when you write in english a Japanese word that contain that letter it will usually be written with eitther R or L depending on which pronounciation is closer to itor just which one the translator or the people who wrote it wants. So Light is written with the L and Kira is written with a R, there is no actual rule to this, it's just how it is with translating words from a language that doesn't have the same letters
His name is actually Yagami Raito. The English equivalent of it is Light. We have R, literally. ら・り・る・れ・ろ (The tongue position is a bit different from the Roman R, that's the difference) We don't have L.

Japanese language doesn't have the letter "L", that's why they use "R" instead to substitute it. Light is verbalized as "Raito" in Japanese language.
Another interesting fact is that since the letter "L" doesn't exist in their language, it makes a perfect symbolism that L the character doesn't exist as well, meaning he's anonymous.
like "p" in arabic, they don't say pizza, they say "bizza", haha! Or like my syrian neighbour says "zabato" (shoe) in spanish, ha!

but this doesn't really make sense, if just killing people who are bad was so easy the courts would be doing it already. The reason you don't kill people for crimes is because some people are going to be innocent and falsely accused. It's not like there aren't plenty of examples of this.
L never fails to convert everyone into his fan IMMEDIATELY, it’s actually kind of scary how likable he is so early on. Usually it takes some time for people to become attached to a character but tbh I think 90% of Death Note fans are here for L rather than Light lmfao

The name "Light" was chosen for a reason. There's a lot of Christian imagery and metaphors in this, so there's probably a connection between his name and Christian mythology. I'm not well versed in Christianity, but possibly a reference to Lucifer the light-bringer?

The author wanted to use the name that nobody would have. I have never met somebody whose name is light in Japan and never will do. On top of it, his name in kanji is "moon (Tsuki or Getsu)" which cannot be read as "light" at all.

I am not sure what you want to say. I remember sitting down with my Canadian friends 15 years ago and talking how Western game graphics are heavily influenced by Japanese anime nowadays. If western influence is related to great stories and work, then westerner's comics should be dominating the sales chart but they are not.

At this moment Light chooses people who have been confirmed to have committed the crime. For example in the ICPO meeting someone stated "They have killed all wanted and known criminals"
Lola Just doesn't get it . That , or she feels like she should hate light for some reason. Otherwise I just don't understand why lola hates light and calls him a a murderer of innocent "not confirmed guilty criminals" . When they anime is literally confirming those were criminals. It's weird
1. being in prison does not mean someone is guilty. 2. he's not just killing people who committed murder. 3. He doesn't care if the person has served their time and may be released tomorrow, he's not checking for anything. He's just killing people at will. And the criminals mentioned by ICPO aren't th eonly people he has been killing or have you forgot about his first two killings.

He is not arguing that because he doesn't do for revenge it's okay. He said that Light knows he is killing some innocents, and for his character that is a necessary price for a world without crime.
Every time I see the end onf this episode I still have goosebumps.
18:12 He is killing serious criminals like murderers, rapists, etc, that sort of crimes, through heartattacks. His idea was that after enough of those criminals have died people would notice that someone is killing them, and it would be easy for people to support him because people obviously have no sympathy for those types of criminals (which is what we see that starts happening in this episode). And after a while, he would start killing the less serious criminals (people who commit fraud, etc) through accidents and disease, so people won't notice too early that Kira is killing them (people don't know Kira can kill in many ways, not just with heartattacks), that way the public wouldn't stop supporting him for executing non-violent criminals. But he thinks that eventually, as the world gets safer and safer, people will understand that killing all criminals was the right thing to do, that Kira was right. And at that point he would become the god of the new world.
I would add that even though killing the man on tv was more of an emotional decision in that moment, it has a logic to it. Light thinks that his plan will save the lives of countless innocents, and will transform the world into a utopia. So in his head anyone who stands in his way is delaying that outcome, which means more unnecessary deaths of innocent people. Therefore in his head people who stand in his way are necessarily evil. This is the thought process of every person who believes their ideology can bring about a utopia, taken to its logical conclusion. People who really believe that will do anything they have to do to achieve their goal. But that doesn't mean that Light has no principles, he does. He will avoid killing innocent people unless he thinks he absolutely has to kill them, because in his head killing innocents unnecessarily would make him no better than the criminals he kills. It would contradict his principles, and if the public found out about it maybe they would stop supporting him. But by killing the man on tv he was also sending the message to law enforcement that they should not stand in his way if they want to live, which could possibly avoid unnecessary deaths in Light's view. Light probably wasn't even counting on having to kill any law enforcement because he is smarter than them, so he probably thought they had no chance of finding him, and would never get that close. But when the man on tv said openly that Kira is evil, he made a rash decision. This was L's plan, that is why he gave that specific script to the man on tv. L must have thought that, based on the hypothetical murderer's actions, he/she must be an arrogant person to think they can decide who lives and who dies based on their own personal judgement, so he intentionally tried to make the murderer angry by attacking in public his/her self-image, so they would make a rash decision.
Light can rationalize it however he wants, but ultimately he did kill Lind L. Tailor solely because his ego was harmed. He knowingly gave the Death Note to a person like Higuchi who would use the Death Note to his advantage and kill innocent people. He killed an uncovicted embezzler and a petty thief because it was convenient to throw off L.
Monster & Vinland saga would be the best you guys should watch this 2 shows cuz it's a masterpieces

Monster is undoubtedly an incredible anime that leaves you a lot to think about, but it is very slow and this can be somewhat overwhelming (that does not mean that it is not a great show).
Instead of monster I would prefer that they react to steins gate (and steins gate 0), it has a very good writing level too and the plot is very pleasant and does not get heavy.

Absolutely every dictator on earth thinks like Kira, they rule their countries for "good", but anyone who questions their means is treated as a traitor, and they don't think twice to consider anyone who questions them as "evil".

lol there is nowhere in the anime that says he only kills murderers and we definitely know that is not the case later on. Even if he did, there is still no guarantee that every single person is actually guilty because we don't have a perfect justice system. How may women are in prison because they killed their abusive husband in self defense? He's not God and he's not investigating a thing
@@gemelwalters2942 It is clearly stated in the anime by Light himself then L then the whole police insvestigation that Kira first targeted mainly prisoners that where convicted of the gravest crimes like Murder and Rape he killed all the death rows inmates of the country, then went after those who committed less serious crimes like stealing fraud etc. Finally, he killed those who opposed him and defied his authority or anyone that could be an obstacle for his plan. The degradation of Kira's tolerance was one of the main trope surrounding his character throughout the whole show: from wanting to bring justice to maniac with a God complex.

It's said in the anime that he does investigate. When he "without memories" says that "Kira would never kill someone who: didn't intend to kill, killed by accident, or those with extenuating circumstances". This line also implies that Kira goes after those that killed someone, but I do agree that he kills innocents in the mix for sure, and those that go after him.

L is the best character, in the second episode he managed to find out that kira is in fact a person, in which region he lives, he can kill from a distance (because he killed the fake L on the television), he is a student for killing people at the same times after class, he can kill at various ways (because of the tests he did by killing), he has access to police information and acted on that information (so, he is related to someone at the highest level of the police). big brain!

I am so looking forward to this episode. I think the whole sub vs dub thing for Death Note has a lot to do with a certain scene (involving a certain snack). The english dub is incredible for that ahaha. But that's cool that you are sticking with original and the sub. Wow, Full Metal Alchemist, too?!! That's so exciting. It's like Christmas is coming from LM Reactions! The english dub is really good for that too. Whichever you go with, this is very important: make sure you are watching "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood"! It needs to say Brotherhood. It's not a sequel - it's the remake, and it's much better and closer to the original content. Make sure it's Brotherhood.
I don't think so. FMA03 is a little better than FMAB, and I think people should watch the two versions. First FMA and than FMAB.
@@danielhenr7355 I wasn't aware that this was up for debate, but after hearing your opinion and some more research, I see the debate about it is still lively. It seems some people appreciate the creativity that went into the 2003 version despite the inevitable divergence from the then unfinished source material. The first 25 episodes of the 2003 version are cut down to 10 in Brotherhood. It's a different universe. I can understand the attachment you might feel, having spent more time with memorable characters.
I have to say though, I'm sure you can understand that many fans will say Brotherhood is better because it's true to the source material, and funnier.
Maybe it's because I watched the first anime version at a much younger age, but I have enjoyed the first one much more than the second, it doesn't even come close. So I have to disagree, although I can ne wrong due to the ages at which I have watched the two shows.

I watch almost all anime (and any other media from different countries) in the original language with English subtitles. Localisation Dubs aren't inherently bad they're just really hard to do well in my opinion. And I think it's really hard for some people (myself included) to switch once they're used to one over the other which is why they want you to watch it in their preferred language so badly. With that being said: FMAB has an excellent dub so I hope you end up watching it dubbed but whichever you pick I mainly hope you enjoy it since it's one of my favourites!
Death note is one of the most exciting anime of all the times, the fact that the show keep people thinking and debating who is the smartest is just wonderful!!

Shaking on my couch waiting for the day Fullmetal hits this channel, hearing you say that made my day! You guys clearly adore characters and I think FMAB is one of the most solid shows at that. Plus a completting plot of course :) but it's always nice when the characters drive the plot and not the other way around

No matter what anyone says I can pretty much understand light . And I won’t say it’s necessarily okay but I can’t lie about the fact that I just can’t blame him .
They said that light is a murderer for killing even people on death row but L did the exact same thing by sacrificing that poor guy and used him as a test subject , they are the same .

I like that you two suspected L as being a girl as the author intentionally wrote things in to make it ambiguous before we saw who he is.

during the "I am Justice" line
Light says "僕 わ" which is "Boku wa" and one variant of how Japanese writes an I/singular reference (I/me/my), only this is far more used for the Masculine variant ("Boku" No Hero)
While L says "私 わ" which is "Watashi wa" and the other major variant of how Japanese write the singular "I" reference (I/me/my) and is largely used by females.
Japanese has a fun language, if you watch things like ReZero when her hear "Kashira?" That's the feminine version of "だろうか?" or "Darou ka?" for "I wonder?"
The series showed us in the first episode of the character Light, a person depressed by society, a very intelligent person who is successful in his school, has a loving family, does not have many friends, but because of his intense hatred for society and the world and the depression he feels because of hearing the news of the guilty every day and sees that prison Doesn't work with them, now with the Death Note? He can clean up the world and keep criminals away to make the place better

I know it is still too early to recommend something to see, but I would like you to give steins gate (and steins gate 0) a chance, I think it would be a better option than FMAB.

Making Light as a main character instead of L was a good choice, we get to see story from his twisted views. even if we don't agree with him, it makes us question lot of things.

So happy to see you guys react to this. I'm neutral as far as sub or dub for this or Fullmetal Alchemist but I will admit to having a soft spot for the dub. I think it's really well done. Either way it's a great story.

Several data to take into account:
- from what i understand, in the Japanese language there is no L sound, which is normally replaced by the R sound (in the Chinese language it happens the other way around, where there is no R sound and is replaced by the L sound). For this reason, *Light* (this is how it is written both in Japanese and in other languages) is pronounced "Raito" in Japanese. The same happens with *L* (which like Light, is written L in all languages), which is pronounced "Eru" in Japanese.
- For the same reason above, *Kira* is written and pronounced Kira in all languages, because it comes from a Japanese romanization derived from the English word "killer".
- In the languages of the Far East, such as Japanese, Chinese or Korean, the order of the name is the reverse of the names in European languages. Therefore, when Light's full name (Light is his name, Yagami is his surname) is mentioned, in Japanese it would be written Yagami Light and it would be pronounced Yagami Raito.
- about Fullmetal Alchemist, a fun fact: Hange's voice actress in Attack on Titan is the same one who voices the main male character in Fullmetal Alchemist.
Watch your shows however you want! You're not going to find many involved anime fans who will tell you to watch a dub, though. Anime is big in japan, cartoons are seen as childish in English-speaking countries (though that may be changing?). Voice acting talent is just better over there.
But if you're enjoying the same stories and characters that I have, I'm a happy viewer.

There was no defending Light's actions before but this definitely cemented the fact that he is just an egotistical maniac. He's not killing evil people, the moment he felt opposed he would kill anyone. The whole cleaning up evil thing is just to mask his ego.
He did rationalize it to himself in a big ass jump of logic in the 'those who oppose the good I'm trying to do are allowing evil to continue', but it was quite a reach.

The kanji “月" is not called light in Japanese. This is a glitter name. For example, we call 光宙 Pikachu , but we don't actually call it.
In an extreme case, “秋” means autumn , but 秋 can also be called winter.
Can you explain me the "秋" case? I've been studying japanese but couldn't find anything about it also being called winter.

Also, I know I'm just adding to the noise, but I appreciate that you watch subs. Big anime fan and never seen a dub I didn't find totally cringe, even the ones everyone rates. Surprised there are many folks who want to see dubs that much.
I prefer sub when I watch anime's but death notes dub is also very good , if you don't know english very much it's hard read it especially in this type of anime ofc original is better than dub but
there is an anime's where you can watch in dub. in general, death note is one of the few anime where it was dubbed well in many languages, the Russian version is also good
Exactly sub snobs don’t let them watch what would be easier for them and this show has an amazing dub other shows with sub over dub for sure but if there were to be one that’s dub it would be this one
@@JessYapping Just because it's "easier" to watch something in dub doesn't mean that the experience is better. I ALWAYS watch shows in their original language, because that's the way it's intended to be consumed. Money Heist?, Spanish. Squid Game?, Korean. English shows? english. This doesn't mean that when I watch a show made in English, I go looking for a foreign language to replace it.
Shows like INVINCIBLE, a cartoon made to be consumed in English, with high-level voice actors like J.K Simmons and Steven Yeun, was awesome to watch despite me being a sub>dub for most shows, but in this case it wasn't a dub since it is originally English. I'd compare the voice acting there to the Japanese anime I've watched and defended for having top-tier voice acting.
Shows like Attack on Titan, sure watching in English would be easier, but then I wouldn't have experienced Yuki Kaji's historical voice acting of Eren. The range he showed in that anime is amazing, compared to Bryce Peppenbrook's nasally/whiny Eren.
Yes, Death Note's Dub is good and completely watchable and at one part, superior (potato chip). But I'll stick to my preference and watch shows in their original language > dubbed voices.
I'm willing to bet that a majority (notice I said majority, not ALL) dub defenders have English as their native language.
At the end of the day, it IS preference, but you calling sub watchers snobs makes you sound like a snob yourself.

Yay. So glad that you’re reacting to one of my favorite anime’s. What I love the most about this anime, is that this is more focused on the cat and mouse game, and not as dependent on building up to a giant fight. The second thing I like the most, especially with this episode, that this entire series could’ve just ended right here, and Light never would’ve been exposed. But the dude’s own ego got in the way, and he ended up exposing himself to the world.

For subbed or dubbed, whether we're talking about Death Note or FMA I personally don't mind either way! After all I'm sure we all already watched these shows with our own preferences, your enjoyment and reaction itself matters the most so it's all good! And just like you said, democracy wins, you act accordingly to what the majority says so I'm sure people won't mind TOO much (hopefully hahaha)
If Psycho Pass wasn't a bit too much like Death Note (in terms of themes of death and crime) that'd be my next suggestion for anime.

Honestly I prefer to watch everything in their original language, as it was intended to be seen, sometimes dubs (not jus in anime), don’t get the tone of the scenes or the characters or put in extra things that weren’t meant to be, plus a lot of the jokes or nuances specific to the country that made the series or movie get lost in favor to put something english speaking audiences understand better and for me that ruins the immersion. So I recommend subtitles for everything hahaha
You should watch the Dub version I think it’s a better experience in my opinion

It’s amazing watching the different death note reaction channels… I’ve noticed a significant difference between female vs male outlook on the show, which I find rather fascinating to say the least.

Yup L and light are similar and this point will be highlighted lot of times in series. But i still don't think L would become a killer not because of morality (non kira Light has better morals than L, you will see) but he already has something in his life i.e detective work which he enjoys. Light was a bored genius, he started this all just as a thrill.
L and Light true personalities (internal factors) are same but there external factors (environment and circumstances) are different. That's why L won't become a killer.

8:39 I imagine it's sometimes pretty low because he has to kill people more or less world wide so that they don't figure out where he lives so I imagine sometimes you did something small and it will be your turn sometimes but at the same time (except for places where a big crime just happened) they have to be more or less within the same severity range
