Wasting materials is not a waste if you are serious about learning paint. It's the cost of your education. Whole lot cheaper than college. I learned the hard way. Asked a million questions. Read books. Watched videos. And kept at it every single day until I got my name out there enough to ditch my factory job. Bought guns I didn't need. Figured out what works best for me. What materials and prep work best for me. Everybody has a way. Took me a few years to find my way. Now I pretty much stick to my own methods, but still keep an open eye and ear for how others do the job.
Thanks for your valuable experience. I live in Alaska and have a small shop and mobile business. Been in Auto restoration for 30 years , and always learning. 😊
Finally a painter that admits they messed up and THEN tells you how to fix the issues you will likely have, most will lie and brag they dont get runs but they cut and buff ragged farm trucks to make it shine lol. Thanks for the straight up video man, greatly appreciated these days. Those “wont see except certain angle” runs mean nothing anyway on a tow truck especially after a couple snow storms 😂, im going to paint my car outside the shop and wont give two shits what it looks like as long as its color isnt surface rust from oem 1984 paint wearing off, me not caring and being my car is usually a recipe for a perfect outcome lol
Check with the manufacturer of the product you’re using for what they recommend. Personally I see no point in putting clear over single stage. If you’re going to shoot clear why not just go base coat clear coat.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I often paint small parts in my basement and i prefer not to spray death coat paint in the house. My reasoning for shooting clear over ss base coat is because clear is less porous than pigmented paint and will reflect more light when its cut and polished to a mirror finish. I use all lacquer based products and would consider a 2 part automotive paint, but the manufacturers dont recommend it.
Excellent job young Mr. You know your stuff. Wet the floor keep the static down put a chain over the axle find a bare spot or connect ground cable to battery lay on concrete.
Can add activated clear to your last cups of single stage as well . Some painters say spraying clear over ss is a waste of time. Others swear by it. I like to think clear over ss would provide some extra uv protection and maybe help with color fade. Guess I will know in 15 years on some of these jobs if I was right or wrong😂
Thin first coat is the key to painting, no matter what you're painting. Most people think you have to put a thick first coat. This applies to wall paint, and spray paint. Good tip
ive sprayed thousands of gallons of imron and nason single stage and always have done 1 medium then 2 wet coats 10 minute flash time. and if you want a high gloss finish you wetsand and put a heavy top coat on top of that after a couple days drying.
Just finished this video. Incredibly informative. I'm about to start doing my prep work on a 1973 Jaguar XJ12 I am attempting to sort of restomod. I strongly suggest that when spraying metallics use basecoat not single stage. Basecoats go on so much easier, they dry much smoother the metallics don't mottle or streak when using the proper reducer and they dry really fast and be clearcoated after about 30 minutes...somuch easier
@@briizcustoms9543 a nicely sprayed solid color wet sanded and buffed can look really nice. If you are spraying just an old car and not something you're going have for a long time a single stage urethane is good but if you're looking for a paint job that will last much longer a basecoat clearcoat paint job will be much more durable and give much better UV protection

Thanks for the very informative video! I've only painted 2 cars and that was 20 years ago. I used Delstar base enamel I think it was. I am thinking about painting my truck and my car. They are old but I just want to make them look better. I see the Urethane base is what it seems most people are using now and just wondering which is the easiest to shoot for a novice, Enamel or Urethane?
So you use a dust coat for more depth and because you are clearing it? What about using mist coat for the last coat (extra thinned paint) or is that from the days of old straight enamel and not used anymore? Thanks, good video & explanation

In your opinion is orange peel caused more from prep work errors or shootings errors (psi, application, etc). Super cool truck. Came out hella nice. On single stage paint do you have to clear after? I was under the impression that single stage paint was mixed w clear when shooting all in one phase? Please help me understand. You earned a new subscriber. Thanks
Ok first thank you and welcome to the family. I have lots of other videos on paint also to help you. Single stage paint doesn’t need a clear coat. I’d never go single stage then clear if I was in charge. This job the customer wanted the clear added to the single stage so I did as asked. I told him that base coat clear coat would of been a better choice. I feel like orange peel has a lot to do with the product. I never change my painting techniques and with product change my orange peel changes. PSI can effect it also if it’s to low. Just paint some easy things that don’t matter to much and learn what works best with your gun and product. Gun also can effect orange peel.
Hi, very informative. Just did my first clear coat job and has come out orange peel. It has stood 4 days now. Must I flat the entire car again to smooth it out and then apply clear coat again. Think my clear should have had more reducer and I didn't overlap enough. How you learn hey😅
You mentioning to use the first coat as a “base coat for the second and third coats to bond to” made my screw up of a paint job on my r1 make sense.. 😂 im about to paint a humvee with a matte black single stage urethane so this helped a lot. Any tips on laying down matte paint?
This video was awhile ago so I don’t remember exactly how we did it but normally I mix up what I think I need for that coat then mix more if needed during flash times
I'm new to this but if you use single stage and clear coat it isn't it the same a as using a base coat? The only difference is that the single s stage paint is your base? Thank you for this video. There was a whole lot of information I in it
Runs I’d say would need to be sanded and repaint panel. Idk if it’ll cut and buff and look good. Personally I’d use base coat clear coat over single stage

Did you use more reducer each coat you sprayed? or mix it the same each coat? I am getting ready to do a solid color and always thought you reduce a little more each coat after your tack coat.
Then why not just do 2 stage if your going to clear coat it anyway,,, make it easy on yourself and just do 2 stage, especially not painting in a controlled booth.
Single stage is a lot more durable than your average base/clear 2 stage. Just by spraying clear over the single stage you now have a more durable paint and the protection and high gloss of the clear coat. Basic single stage needs to be buffed twice a year to keep it shining and protected so by adding clear coat to it is not that much of a step since you are already there anyways.
Personally I’d never clear over a single stage. This was the customers request and I just did as asked. Adding clear helps protect the single stage so it last longer. But if I’m going to lay clear then me personally I’d just do bc/cc
that one dent on the driver door! could have been fixed so quickly and I keep seeing it, otherwise truck is perfect. Cant wait to shoot mine with single stage as well.
I'm guessing this video wasn't to show us how to spray single stage paint? I'll try to move like I'm in a video made from still photos but I don't think it'll work. That color looks really nice especially for a first coat.
Correct this wasn’t made to teach. This wasn’t ever intended to take off this big. I have other very detailed videos on painting and how to under our paint playlist
Thanks, I'm completely inexperienced myself and my beater falcon needs paint bad and I'm planning using this so I'm trying to prepare myself as much as I can before I start wasting product. Any gotchas & tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated
I have a lot of videos to help with painting on the channel if you’ll look back through the videos. I think you’ll find more info you can use to help you.
What’s a good real budget DIY paint brand? Something that they will mix a paint to a specific paint code. Someone online besides Eastwood which does not mix to codes.
Two questions: #1 why are you applying CC to single stage paint? and #2 if you knew you were going to spray CC why not use 2 stage paint since it is better for metallics? Not criticizing, just trying to learn.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle They made life hard on the painter and added to the cost to spray a single stage paint (with hardner) and then spray clear (also with hardener)

Yea I had a sata but it started leaking and I didn’t want to rebuild so o stopped using it. I spray everything with my super nova now honestly. I’m not that high end of a painter
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I have 10 Sata's. Its the air piston head assembly when air leaks from the air cap. I rebuild them all myself. The other plus fir the Iwata's is there are very few seals in them. only the needle packing assembly or the air spreader valve seal. Good guns.
He fully understands all the paint stuff being Bryan paints at the shop Johns car is at. John isn’t interested in a clear coat at all. He wants spray paint or single stage. Lol not much I can do. If y’all wanna change his mind y’all go tell him on his videos 😂
make sure you do those glue coats. maybe %50 coverage on first pass just to get a good adhesive bond with the panels. Then you can get heavier and heavier coats without runs. Just watch what youre doing and use lots of lights!
The first product is single stage it’s just what it is. It’s not base coat. Then clear is added over as customer requested and Eastwood recommended for extra protection
It’s an Eastwood product. I should of showed it in video. I can’t remember the product now bc it’s been awhile. Also I don’t know price you’d need to contact them

@@ThePaintPaperHustleyeah but is there a difference ? Is it more shiny durable in ur opinion
@arealmaintenanceandrepairl1103 adding clear def makes it more durable.
What do you achieve by using single stage if your going to clear coat why not use base then clear, nice colour dude
Personally I’d never clear over a single stage. This was the customers request and I just did as asked. Adding clear helps protect the single stage so it last longer. But if I’m going to lay clear then me personally I’d just do bc/cc
@@ThePaintPaperHustle thanks for getting back to me mate nice work dude
You’re very welcome
Should feel like the adhesive on masking tape before next coat,,
Thanks
that one dent on the driver door! could have been fixed so quickly and I keep seeing it, otherwise truck is perfect. Cant wait to shoot mine with single stage as well.
Owner did body work not me. Just a work truck. It’s trashed now
Can you lay on solids on ”wetter” than metallics like this? Been thinking about repainting my Volvo 744 -88! Nice vid bro keep it up💯
Yes you can lay on solids wetter
I'm guessing this video wasn't to show us how to spray single stage paint? I'll try to move like I'm in a video made from still photos but I don't think it'll work. That color looks really nice especially for a first coat.
Correct this wasn’t made to teach. This wasn’t ever intended to take off this big. I have other very detailed videos on painting and how to under our paint playlist
Can you provide some insight to why the owner had such a bad tim with orange peel that it had to be taken down & re-prepped?
Yes he is new to painting and just messed up. He also had runs I think. Now as far as why I’m not sure as I wasn’t there when he sprayed it.
Nice job.....
Thanks
So they have clear to go over single stage paint? This looks great!
Yes most brands of single stage will offer a clear to go over their product that you’re using
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I used some EBAY clear over mine and regretted it.
@55chevytruck I personal would just recommend base coat clear coat
What’s a good real budget DIY paint brand? Something that they will mix a paint to a specific paint code. Someone online besides Eastwood which does not mix to codes.
I don’t buy anything online so honestly not sure.
Good job...
Thanks
How much time did u wait tell u made the 2nd coat
I think it was 10min. Your data sheet will tell you all that info or I think on this one it was on side of can.
Two questions: #1 why are you applying CC to single stage paint? and #2 if you knew you were going to spray CC why not use 2 stage paint since it is better for metallics? Not criticizing, just trying to learn.
Customer wanted to do it this way. I told him if it was mine I’d base coat clear coat but he wanted to use the single stage kit then clear over.
If you need to clear this paint is it not a 2 stage? Why is it a single stage if you need to use the clear top coat? Thanks for your reply.
You do not need to clear this. Customer just wanted to add that
@@ThePaintPaperHustle They made life hard on the painter and added to the cost to spray a single stage paint (with hardner) and then spray clear (also with hardener)
Is that a supernova? what set up? 1.3 hd or 1.4 please?
Nice to hear an honest person, giving it the sarts and all review. I have had a few runs in my time. Heck its only paint. Flat the clear and polish the panel.
Yes it is a super nova I can’t remember the size I’d have to check Monday as I’m already gone for today. Thanks I try to keep it 100 on this channel and not sugar coat anything lol
@@ThePaintPaperHustle Yes I have one as well. Bit on the slow side compared to my Sata's - which are cannons. But the gun is sure a sexy looking work of art. Sprays nice and flat if the fan is close in. You know what I mean. Use it mainly for Candies. I have shittier guns for single stage!!!
Good guns.
So do you have to put all of that in the paint
All of what? You should be using all the products in this video yes or whatever your product calls for
Gotcha u answered everything I needed, thanks
@@torapruitt9491 you’re very welcome
Hope you saved the paint code for John's mustang lol
I actually did speak with John today and he does have the paint code 😉
@@ThePaintPaperHustle Just talk him into CC he won't regret it afterwards
He fully understands all the paint stuff being Bryan paints at the shop Johns car is at. John isn’t interested in a clear coat at all. He wants spray paint or single stage. Lol not much I can do. If y’all wanna change his mind y’all go tell him on his videos 😂
How much paint did this take one or two gallons or more?
Honestly I can’t remember buddy. I think 1
That's Wisconsin 85 for 3 days and then snow in the next 2 , and I thought it was only in Wisconsin
Lol man you’re not alone weather is wild here
Great job you do good work keep it up 👌👌
Thanks
make sure you do those glue coats. maybe %50 coverage on first pass just to get a good adhesive bond with the panels. Then you can get heavier and heavier coats without runs. Just watch what youre doing and use lots of lights!
Yea I do 50% over lap on everything almost
You go through all the trouble to take the windows outta the doors , but don’t take the door handles off ?
I didn’t do any of that. Someone else prepped. All I did was spray the paint on the truck.
How many gallons to paint a pickup
All depends on size and current shape. Normally I can do it with one gallon.
How is it a single stage paint job if you shooting clear over it
The first product is single stage it’s just what it is. It’s not base coat. Then clear is added over as customer requested and Eastwood recommended for extra protection
Did 8 spray jobs this week and only one run, really no excuse for having runs and having to cut and buff if your a good painter.
Awesome. I’m not a good painter though at all.
Time lapse works better in a tripod. Good stuff though
Yes this video was low quality and thrown together. No clue why it took off to the size it has. We have much better educational videos on painting
does single stage clear have any UV protection ?
Yes. The level of protection all depends on how good of a product you’re using.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle Can you recommend a good single stage clear coat?
Honestly I don’t have one to recommend buddy I’m sorry
a first coat is best to be on the light side.
Absolutely
😎 cool
Wat color is that?
Unfortunately this video is a few years old. If I didn’t show the label on can in the video then I have no clue
Can you give me the paint color code?
Unfortunately I don’t have it I’m sorry
What is this called how much?
It’s an Eastwood product. I should of showed it in video. I can’t remember the product now bc it’s been awhile. Also I don’t know price you’d need to contact them
Are you related to the guy at LS Nasty?
Jon Doc?
@@ThePaintPaperHustle not him. But one of his buddy’s that regularly appears on the channel
What kind of single stage is this? Acrylic urethane should shine like glass at the 2nd and 3rd coat .
This is an older video and o honestly don’t remember. I feel like I showed the can at the beginning and it maybe on there. I know it’s a product made by Eastwood. Orange peel hurts shine and this had a lot of orange peel in it
How much of the color did you use?
75% of the gallon
DuPont Centari back in the day
Awesome
Is your camera a potato? Near had a fit watching that
Yes it is. I apologize for the low quality. This video was never intended to take off to the level it has and was poorly filmed. Again very sorry for you having to sit through that.
Really wish you could have slowed down the video I wanted to follow spray pattern and estimate distance. Also can I recommend you go to a stationary set-up, when you sped up the video it became very disorienting, it felt like having vertigo.
Otherwise thanks for the upload
Yes this video is terrible lol idk why it has got so many good views. Go to my channel and then find the playlist. Look for the painting ones and check them out. Theres a ton of good videos on here they haven’t taken off like this one did for some crazy reason
