    That was cool! Had no idea about portals until now. Every rig should have portals!

    With the removal of those cone washers try sticking a small thin bladed screwdriver into their expansion slot & just twist them out. No need to bash on the axle flange or studs & loosen & stretch in the threads so they eventually snap off under load. I wipe a very thin film of grease on them on re-install so they dont rust or sieze in.

    Hey mate, great video. I bought a used 79 with the old portals and 100k driven on them. Im about to do a service to check out the condition of the gears and then head off-grid. What spare parts do you recommend to order to take with me?

    • @LifeoftheCromies
      @LifeoftheCromies  6 днів тому

      Hi mate, If your doing the service and inspecting them and doing oils etc just have a good look at the wear on the teeth and bearing/shaft condition. As for spares, I'd get a spare drain plug, oil, shaft, idler bearings and seals from Marks.

    Great info. How do you find them on the road and off-road such as corrugations. Much difference in fuel use

    • @LifeoftheCromies
      @LifeoftheCromies  7 місяців тому

      Hey mate, no real fuel usage difference as the change in gear ratios compensation for the larger tyres and extra drag. They perform like a stock setup on corrugations, just with more clearance.

    • @LifeoftheCromies
      @LifeoftheCromies  11 місяців тому

      Hi mate, these were installed before it was registered. Fuel consumption is about 14.7L per hundred on 37s

    Can you explain how water gets in when they have breathers? And hard facing being worn off is usually heat isn't it? Is it normal to have such portal wear after suuch a short time?

    • @LifeoftheCromies
      @LifeoftheCromies  10 місяців тому +3

      Hey mate, I had changed the oil in the gearboxes prior to cape and didn't push the breather hose back in properly, it got water in it and then it was over the capacity to spat some oil out the breathers with the excess water resulting in bugger all oil in there. Heat from driving a few thou kms after with minimal oil wore the hard facing.

    Hey great vid about portals, really want to know the pros and cons on the portals as I’m thinking of getting em. Compressor wise, servicing, how tough are they?

    • @LifeoftheCromies
      @LifeoftheCromies  10 місяців тому

      Thanks mate, we love the portals, not noisy at all, arb single comp comes with the kit mounted in the engine bay for the front hubs, I service the rears every 5k kms and fronts every 10k kms. Straight cut gears this wide are pretty strong, I just a decent amount of power on 37s and have not had any issues with damage caused from stress.

    Portals are awesome to lift and give the car height and articulation. However if and if you bust something remote. Your stuffed as no one remote has supplies for such a thing so repairs could be 10 fold. Not being biased just saying thats all. Love the rig by the way.
