  • That's alot of commas. All this because of a chuck.
    The grimy insides laid bare.

*I have this same dcd777 and my chuck started to not grip completely so I followed your vid to open up the casing and see what's going on. As soon as I removed the transmission both sets of planetary gears fell out all over the floor. I managed to find all eight small gears and everything else. I cleaned out all of the old grease and used synthetic marine grease and figured out how to get everything back together, now it works great. Be Careful when removing the transmission, the entire gear assembly will slide out if you tilt the transmission down.*

I really appreciate your video. First time I ran across a video that actually was about the exact tool I have. Thanks

Good to know the chuck is pinned on. I'm taking my whole drill back while I can get my money back. Wobbles enough to cause injury.

Hey Milton, I almost forgot to ask you, which DeWALT do you recommend?

The chuck on Dewalt DCD777 and 778 can easily be replaced without having to replace the complete head with gearbox and clutch, you only need a large-size allen key and mallet: jam the allen key and hit counter-clockwise - see multiple tutorials on how to replace a chuck on UA-cam. The only difference with 777 and 778 is that there is no chuck lock clockwise screw like other DeWalt (no T10 or T20 screw), the chuck is only held in place with locktite. I have replaced my 777 plastic chuck with an old metal XRP and is works wery well, sturdier and no more wobbling.

Hey Marc, I'm trying to do the same but everytime I hit the chuck the motor just turns. Any tips?

The service guy at DeWalt who did that for me the first time use a large allen key (3/8 with 6-inch long handle) and hit the allen key sharply with a hammer, like they do on typical UA-cam videos. The chuck is held with LockTite so you need to break that "glue". A sharp hit will do that, however make sure your chuck is supported when you hit (e.g. in contact with your bench/table) to avoid damaging the drill or chuck. The force must be transmitted in rotation of the chuck, not in bending of the shaft/drill

@@marcbeaudry4507 In the throws of trying to remove the clutch.. no success yet.. will reach for a heavier hammer. Contacted "chat" at DeWalt.. no info from them. Rec'd a new chuck and now to get the old one off. Have the DCD777

Thanks to this comment I just replaced mine without disassembling the whole thing. There are good ways to do it. 1- The allen wrench and hammer. 2- An impact torx (allen) with rachet (I used this method) . 3- Grabbing the chuck with channellock or pipe wrench (maybe, no matter if gets damaged , it's trash anyways

Is no point to fix new tools ... just loosing your time useless anyway

You’re FoS! You just can’t do the repair, so you throw up your hands and buy a new one. $35 for a new transmission. $129 for a new drill. 🤔
