I would never try to do this, but I enjoyed watching you do it. You must have a great memory.

Thanks for this video, the price of a new Chuck from Ebay was £32 and only £49 for the full clutch, Chuck, gears and speed selector so I went for the full lot rather than bash the drill with a hammer, and your dismantling guide was perfect. So thank you again.

Chuck on the DCD796 can indeed be replaced and is available as a part. There is no pin that holds chuck. It is purely held by high torque.
You must remove gearbox assembly and counterhold on the spindle using a special tool.
Torque is incredibly high 550 ft lbs or 746 Nm.

You can use right size small flat screw driver for deep set screw
    (Also)
Your mate who took out and reassembled gears didn't line up inner toothed plastic outer ring, it has a mark on it that lines up with 3 dots.. then when reassembled wiggle speed toggle and flick power, you should find your speed 2 kicks in.
I had this problem and worked it out
    Ant 👍

    Hi.
Actually, it is not necessary to disassemble Dewalt DCD796 drill to get the gearbox out and back in. Well, at least I didn't have to do it. :D
Just removing 4 screws holding the gearbox to the drill body was enough. As you can see in the video at 8:12, gearbox goes out easily, all there is left to be done is to simply wiggle out the gearbox. Out and slightly upwards. There is just a speed selector lever to be gently pulled out the plastic switch itself. Refitting is opposite of removal of course. Make sure to properly align the speed selector while refitting. Be patient and gentle.
Mine dcd796 got stuck with hammer action after latest drilling job. It won't disengage hammer (well, it is vibration really) even though torque collar is operational. But, that's a different story... Cheers.

The reason I dismantled it is to make it easy for people, so they could see how and why things went together and came undone that way.

Igor my drill is doing the exact same thing after using it today. How did you sort it?

@@smyth602 I haven't unfortunately. Tool repairer said all he can do is to order new gearbox. I got another drill inexpensively.

Hey man. I can guarantee that you can change the chuck. Did it yesterday.

In other words, just go and buy a new drill. Thank you for helping me realize that. I have a lot of tools and an engineering degree. But the amount of specialty tools I'd have to buy, and the cost of parts, just doesn't seem sensible to even try to repair my drill.

To remove the chuck, insert the short end of a big Allen wrench into the chuck and tighten. Then take a hammer and hit the long end of the wrench counterclockwise(lefty loosey). It took me about ten solid blows with a mini sledge before it broke loose, then it unthreaded by hand. There is no screw in the chuck.

Hi Milton..does the dewalt dcd776 have replaceable brushes..any vids please.

    • @littlemilto6563
      @littlemilto6563  5 років тому

Yes you can, but it's a pain in the butt. You have to remove the plastic backing plate to start and then find the right brushes for it (Which isn't easy). So usually the service centers just change the entire motor, which is both cheaper and quicker since that's only re-soldering two wires. I hope this is helpful.

Hi, I have a 2 year old DCD796. Has done very little work and is in mint condition. I was useing it yesterday and once i was done I noticed that the Led light wouldn't turn off anymore. Removed the battery and re- attached, Led light is still on and never goes off. All switch's, torque gears, drill, hammer drill, variable triger work, but led light is constantly on full power which is obviously draining the battery. Hasn't done a full weeks wort off work!!!

The light is designed to stay on when the light switch is on full power mode., This way it is like a torch.

Does the 796 have a metal gearbox? or is it plastic?

  • @heckeepagan2670

That's why is good to have a weak impact sometimes. If you would have used a Milwaukee impact you would have strip the plastic or screws.😁😁😁
