I saw Dr. Lustig's lecture about sugar just a year ago, and as it was said - it DID change my life profoundly. So much as for a year I didn't have a single sip of orange juice, completely went off table sugar since April 2019 and dramatically reduced sweet treats. Best push anyone could give me in my life. Thank you and wish more people learn about it.

@@remie2718 Not really. I never was a big fruit eater anyway, but I do indulge occasionally if I crave something, mangoes, bananas, apples, etc. I don't restrict myself. But what I did reduce almost to a zero is fruit smoothies. I used to do those often, but I had some serious thoughts to reconsider that... Why drink the fruit when we can eat them ☺
In 3rd Asian world countries in the rural-traditional-poor sections and in rural Mediterranean poor section of these countries, women of all ages do not get dementia or ALZHEIMER because they only use ORGANIC coconut oil made on the same day in the traditional way or a few days ago up to within a week and the only use ORGANIC olive oil made on the same day in the traditional way or a few days ago up to within a week. Gentleman, I found this video being sent Dr. Amen’s 83,000 brain scans in my psych class...I’m doing a self-study on how my diet affects my anxiety trying to keep up with the course plus full-time work...I’ve lost 11 lbs in 5 days just ditching my daily iced coffees! Wow! Having Dr. Amen AND Dr. Lustig together is the best. I learned so much about brains, dopamine, well as the metabolic issues, and how sugar, insulin, etc. affects the brain as well as the rest of the body. Please do another interview with Dr. Lustig. You two are the all-star team! I've read all of Dr. Lustig's books and am going through your books too.
My mother went into a nursing facility after falling from osteoporosis. They fed her canned soup, white bread- grilled cheese sandwiches, ice cream and cookies and anti- depressants. My mom has vascular dementia and I'm sure the nurses eat donuts and coffee. How sad. And then they ridicule me for not giving her what she wants.
They are clueless.

Dr. Rober Lustig is a national ... make that an international... treasure. I appreciate his rigorous scientific justifications to his provocative accusations. Moreover, his explanations of "addiction" should educate even the most skeptical scientific minds.

My favorite doctors meet and are trying to help people improve their lives by sharing knowledge.
I am Japanese. I feel it is not easy for American people to eat real food cheaply and easily. For example, in Japan we can get grilled-fish and vegetable lunch everywhere from 3 to 5 dollars. They are located next to Macdonald and Burger king ! We have a lot of choices. Aso size of ice creams and snacks are much smaller than Americans.
Now in Japan, low-carbo diet is spotlighted. Because rice and bread also increase blood sugar level and cause diabetes and etc. I think Dr Lustig is talking mainly only about sugar because that is the first thing American people should realize, and rice and pasta and bread should coming next. Since eating carbohydrates makes Japanese people get diabetes even without being obease.
I lived in Japan for a few years and I loved being able to buy healthy cooked food everywhere even though I could see the widespread growth of all of the fast food chains [and they all seem to be full]. 日本 が 懐かしい
At McDonald's or any other burger place you can eat healthy by ordering a burger without the bun and skipping the fries.. but most people don't think to do that. It's a matter of people's expectations. And people could easily fill their cup with Diet Coke rather than with Coca Cola, but they just don't have the awareness of how harmful sugar can be.
@@stevecampbell5079 I feel Japanese people are getting fatter too, people younger than 50's grew up with fast foods and cakes. But still we eat tofu, grilled fish, and drink miso soup, green tea and chinese tea. Also, superior delivery system in Japan support healthy life too. I always buy 'Naturally grown vegises and meat' from special farmers almost every week.
@@tohopes That's right. People don't have to choose sodas. But I think habit and environment is also important. For example when you go to a Japanese food diner or fast food, you get green tea for free and nobody order soda or any kind of drinks. Because they don't match with food and extra cost...people even think about that.
It is a bit sad to eat burgers without buns, fries, sodas.... especially being surrounded by people eating those and that smell ! Also, those burger meat has little nutritions, so doesn't make sense. In Japan, you can eat 'grilled (real)chicken lunch' with $5.
@@yf7236 I have never found it sad to eat a burger without a bun, and I consider a beef patty with cheese to be more nutritious than grilled chicken. But I guess that goes again to personal preferences and expectations. If younger people continue to choose fast food over the grilled fish that you like so much, then the grilled fish places will go out of business. Why did McDonald's catch on in Japan in the first place?

Absolutely. I couldn't believe how they all burst with flavours when l knocked sugar on the head.
This is so true. The reason why fresh fruit and vegetables taste so bad these days is because our senses are dulled by processed food and especially sugar. Off the sugar and suddenly vegetables are sweet. Berries taste like sugar bombs. And there's the smells as well, like the smell of a freshly peeled banana.
So true. It is like the sugar, MSG, and chemically mastered flavor enhancers that put your taste buds in a coma. Remove those sledge hammers to the tongue you can really taste the veggies and other real food for their true favors and natural sweetness which are dwarfted by these chemicals and processes.

Stopped sugar years ago, don't drink milk or juice, don't drink alcohol, and don't smoke, have been on KETO since 2018 and now fasting and doing OMAD, walking again - 30 - 60 mins, 3-5 times per week... Am now considering ELIMINATING EVEN STEVIA AND MONK FRUIT because my waist size just won't reduce. I may need to continue fasting five days at a time JUST to see som results!!

High fructose corn syrup has more fructose than glucose, is in practically everything, and is responsible for at least 40-60% of the epidemic of "irritable bowel syndrome". People with fructose malabsorption have trouble absorbing fructose in the absence of glucose. They get stomach pain, gas, and diarrhea from straight fructose. Agave is 90% fructose, and is even worse. Chronic diarrhea dehydrates you and leads to malnutrition, because you can't absorb nutrients when food goes in and out of you so fast.

I always compared product brands to find the one with the least sugar and sodium. It's crazy how much salt they put in all our canned and packaged foods.
1 pleasure is short lived- happiness is long term
2 pleasure is visceral in the body- happiness is ethereal above the neck
3 pleasure is taking- happiness is giving
4 pleasure is selfish - happiness is social
5 pleasure can be achieved with substances happiness cannot
6 addictions possible with pleasure- no addiction to happiness
7 pleasure is dopamine happiness is serotonin

Dr. Lustigs lectures are amazing.
I like experimenting to see what works and what doesn’t so I’ve tested a lot of diets. My brain works the best on intermittent fasting and very low carb.
I read once that in the 1950’s people were eating an average of 10 lbs of sugar a year, now its up to 165 lbs of sugar a year so its no surprise that heart disease and diabetes and other sugar related diseases have sky rocketed. Sugar causes inflammation for me. I have arthritis in my lower back and I have zero problems with it when I’m eating low carb. If I eat sugar it starts bothering me fast. Instant inflammation.
I also read that heroin lights up one area of the brain where as sugar lights up the whole brain (the pleasure centres) so you can see why its so addicting.
It’s so important to educate yourself and advocate for your health. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t take much of an interest in their health though until they lose it.

Eating itself can be addictive. The body is designed for OMAD or longer. I see the value in preparing your own meals or being selective in using the fast food convenience. Convenience doesn't have to be a bad thing. It depends how you use it. Most people are stuck seeking pleasure rather than happiness.

You have the freedom to say reasonable things that men do not have anymore. I cannot and I will not ever compliment a woman on her looks, her dress or her makeup. I treat all women like robot men. There's a huge price to pay if I don't do that. When I was a young mother I took some long distant holistic nutritional classes with a college in the U.S. and I was lucky to learn about the dangers of sugar and processed refined foods, so I made just about all our meals from scratch. My uncle was a hunter and fisherman. So my freezer was full of moose, deer, and fish he shared with us. Those days are long gone, but sometimes I'm lucky and my brother and sister share when they are lucky enough to get their hands on some moose. I have not purchased store processed meats in decades. There have been lots of time I didn't follow "real" eating, but I always returned to it. I am so grateful for Dr. Amen and Dr. Lustig for their amazing work and sharing their knowledge with the world. You both radiate life and love! Thank you so much.

The mind, its all about the mind. Imagine, had these kids who were being controlled by their brain had a drive that moved them to do things. We know many cases where people have done things by getting their mind to think in a certain way. Take a bank robber.
Just yesterday, I was asked, What did you do to lose over 70 pounds. First, you have to know what you're eating and the effects it has on you. But, that isn't enough, you have to get control of your mind. Once, I got my mind from wandering off, I could keep it from moving me to eat things that wasn't producing the results I wanted, second, once, I got the results, I now, had a brain trained to give me the right thoughts so I would eat the right things and still be able to eat cake and ice cream at my 13 grandchildren's birthday parties, and my 3 kids birthday parties and so on.
When, I am inspired to do something, I act on an impulse and if, anyone is watching, I get a feed back, like, I wouldn't ever expect to see someone your age doing that. I'm 58 and slinging myself over fences with ease. Are balancing myself of a platform 45 feet in the air. I know from my childhood experiences that as long as I don't think about what I'm about to do, I can perform what was visualized by my brain.
Imagine, 27 thoughts in a day and doing 27 things in a day. To lose weight, the mind needs to be silent 90% of the time.

Best to drink your smoothie six ounces at a time. Since it is "pre-chewed" it goes into the bloodstream faster than eating the whole fruit or vegetable. The pulverization of the foods make them high glycemic. Yet in small doses they are just fine. And I found that making smoothies preserves the fiber while juicing removes it. Take care.

Not for me either. My sugar levels would go up like crazy and soon after drop very low and I would feel bad and I would have to eat again. I don't do well on high carb/sugar diets. I need fats and protein to feel well.
Juicing can be employed as a healing modality. When taken in place of regular meals, it provides the digestive system with rest, so the body can concentrate on healing/repair and detoxification. It is for example part on Gerson Therapy, and was employed by Dentist Kelly during healing of his advanced pancreatic cancer. According to his method MD Nicholas Gonzales later helped many to heal cancer and other health problems. With juicing they incorporated individualised supplementation, digestive enzymes - also between meals - and Coffee Enemas(to assist liver to detoxify).

I had no idea Snackwells were still around. It tried them in the 1980s, and they tasted terrible. They melt into nothing in your mouth like dissolving cardboard. Yuck.
They became really big in the 1990s. Foods that take out the fat and add in sugar are still all over the grocery stores though.

Please explain I followed keto diet FOR 12 months , no sugar no fruit except berries strict keto , never lost any weight, went onto ozampic for 4 months , never lost any weight! Last 8 months strict diet vegetables mainly soups , no sugar no carbs except in vegetable, developed SIBO and gained weight . Exercised daily , went onto antibiotics for SIBO , plus food elimination. Now diarrhoea ceased and slowly reintroduce foods via FOB map. Still unable to lose weight .fasting 16 hours daily .
My daily diet : berry smoothie , vegetable soup 300mls about 2 pm nothing after 3pm .protein is 2 eggs or small amount lean meat….I’ve given up losing weight

I started keto then keto/carnivore about Oct of last year, got bodyfat % to 12%, can play tennis and bball all day without feeling tired. I am 50 now and outplaying kids half my age. @Sandy Shines I started off with reducing anything processed, got rid of all vegetable oils. Still have the occasional "party food" such as birthday cake, but now I make 90% of the foods we eat. It's easy when our staple food is beef, lamb, venison, seafood....some poultry. It's not as hard as people think and I really enjoy being in the kitchen now with the family together. Even got my 6 year old to read nutrition labels.

The author seems to forget an important distinction in the opposing nature of pleasure and happiness.
Pleasure is obtained in a *lazy* fashion. And pleasure has enticing and tempting qualities that are directly woven into the (immediate) motivational fabric of the psyche. Happiness doesn't offer any reward upfront, except for perhaps the vague memory of having experienced it before. It's achieved mainly through activity and creativity which is why it's initially so unappealing to seek out. It takes effort and costs time to develop happiness and contentment. No wonder people line up in droves at McDonalds. It's the principal of least resistance. Despite the widespread knowledge that it's the world's most egregious conveyor belt plebkiller on the planet.
Well I learned something new today, apparently smoothies aren't optimal for your liver flux either. The blades of the food processor will cut the insoluble fibres (cellulose, chitins, fructans) to smitherines. In such a destructive way that it inhibits the functionality of the fibre lattice to buffer the uptake of fructose. I guess from now on, I'll just throw the veggies in the blender and I'll add the (manually sliced) fruit later?

Dopamine and serotonin: I think of dopamine as the reward neurotransmitter. Receptors can get saturated.
And I think of serotonin as the contentment neurotransmitter. Receptors don't get saturated.
Dopamine reward is addictive and temporary, where serotonin is not addictive and is sustainable. Am I correct?

I worked in a preschool and when a child's in school birthday celebration came it was sugar hell! Ice cream, inches thick frosted cake, Hawaiian Punch and a candy treat bag to take home!!! OMG!! Can you say bouncing off the wall. It was horrible. Think of it as addictive heroin. The school finally cut out those parties. They made a crown for the child, sang Happy birthday and gave the child special things to do with and for the teacher for the day. Thank goodness.

I was a fruitarian for 2 and 1/2 years. I ate nothing but all kinds of fruit and two avocados a day for fat. (Avocados are also considered to be fruit.) I lost 65 pounds eating all the fruit I could stuff in my mouth. Fruit contains generous amounts of fructose. I felt great with all the vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals I was receiving. I consumed no commercial sugar or salt I laugh out loud every time I hear people caution against fruit. Eating fruit is the only successful weight loss situation I have ever experienced.
A lot of your weight loss was lean body mass. The only way to avoid that is to get adequate high quality, i.e., protein. A quick but pretty close guide to what you need, minimum, is to take your ideal weight in pounds, divide by two, ergo, grams of animal protein a day. Again, minimum.
You ever see what long time frutarians look like? Emaciated, see above. And after enough years, gum disease and cavities and worse.
Fruit has some vitamins but many are lacking. B12, D, K2, and others.
Eat what we evolved to eat: meat. You can't fool mother nature.................for long.
Glad it worked. I'm T2D so cant eat fruit except berries about 100g a week. Good you live it a time were fruit is available 365 days a year.

Frequently Cynical I will have to disagree. A whole foods plant based diet is the only diet that stops and could reverses heart disease that's why Bill Clinton was put in their diet! Notice he was not put on ANY OTHER DIET after his quadruple bypass surgery. Yes, that's telling you something ....about the k-2, d-3 and b-12 concerns. Well, k-1 converts to k-2, d-3 from the sun and mushrooms and b-12 the same way the animals get it, they are supplemented! Lol, a lot of ppl don't know this..and u get no cholesterol, no hormones (mammalian growth hormones are in flesh, dairy and eggs), and no toxins in a whole foods plant based diet...

I’m am just recovering from an aneurysm.. Doctors said there was nothing I could have done to avoid what happened, ie collapsed suddenly without any warning. Is that true Dr Amen? I am healthy in all other ways, good diet, don’t smoke or drink or take any kinds of tablets.

Oh dear, sweeteners are not good either as they trick the body into thinking it's getting energy which it then craves for. Just teach your tastebuds to taste your food in it's natural state.
