A reporter ask Elvis what it was like to have the best singing voice in the world. Elvis said I wouldn't know you would have to ask Roy Orbison.
Elvis was also said Roy is an act he would never follow.
I so hope that's true! ❤
I actually heard, many years ago, Elvis said that Roy O, is his favorite singer and that he wished he could sing higher notes like his friend, Roy,,it’s true,❤
A long time ago when I used to work room service, I met Roy Orbison I was very happy to spend more than half an hour talking with him. I asked him why he always wore black, and he said once when he was out on tour there was a fire at his home and his wife and his child were killed. He said he'd never wear anything but black again. He seemed to be an extremely nice man
Every person on that stage with him is a star in their own right. This was the most amazing concert ever!
Did i see Joe Lynn-Turner [ex Rainbow] in the band at some point during the concert?
Roy was master of his voice with an enormous range...My personal favorite voice of all time...Love you guys !!!
When J.D. Souther, Steven Soles, Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, K.D. Lang and Jennifer Warnes are your backup singers....
Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen on guitar
You know that you're a musical God when you got back up like that also when you used to open for Elvis and tease him and Elvis didn't mind. People wanted to work with Roy constantly even people and other music groups like U2.. and as someone else pointed out even Elvis Costello. So many singers from so many walks alive.. used to clamor to work with him so yeah you know you have arrived when you're that much of a legend. But he was such a nice guy such a humble guy on the stage with a beetle, Tom Petty Jeff Lynne oh the life he had.
Also going to point out that Elvis Presley himself once said that Roy Orbison had the voice of an Angel. Can't argue with a king after all he is the king.
This was a great special which you can find online still.
Tom Waits relegated to playing keys (and loving every minute of it.)
Roy's operatic range vocals and delivery are true gems!
Roy had the loudest, most powerful whisper.
Even the last band he played & sang with, the supergroup The Travelin' Wilburys, knew what a gem they had working with them. He passed away while with that band, & in the video for their song, "The End Of The Line", they had a guitar in a haunted rocking chair, & a photo of Roy. That band featured Roy, George Harrison of The Beatles, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Tom Petty of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, & the great Bob Dylan. A true collection of musical genius.
He was so talented and professional that other great artists wanted to assemble and play with him 30 years after his greatest successes and he found new success, fame and acceptance from newer generations.
@@laurogarza4953 You're so right, friend. Real talent never dies, & probably as long as there are things called humans, they'll be listening to Roy Orbison's incredible voice. Thanks so much for your comment.
One of my all time fave groups❤❤❤
So agree, they were amazing together .
@@cathy1523 Indeed, they were, friend. Sad to think only Jeff & Bob are still with us. Think Bob's like Keith Richards - he's gonna live forever. Thanks so much for your comment.
I loved that man. His life was sad, his wife was killed in an accident. Then he was on stage when his house burned down killing his two sons. I was so happy he eventually married again. You have lots more of his amazing voice to discover. He was a sweet man, he had a heart bypass surgery and two weeks later a blood clot killed him. He should still be here. Thank you.
Roy Orbison was a fantastic singer. He had a seven octave range, which is almost unheard of in singers. I was twelve when he started his amazing streak of top hits, so I lived through that era.
His singing is just so effortless and pitch perfect. Fabulous. 🙂🙂💕💕
Roy Orbison was greatly loved and respected by other musicians. Everyone on that stage or in the audience was famous in their own right.
That whole concert is incredible. Bruce Springteen, Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, and Jennifer Warnes all performed with him. It is worth the efforts to find it.
Roy was simply the greatest!
And that was Roy Orbison singing well past his prime. Breathtaking voice.
literally this concert was his last public performance 😭
When I hear Roy sing this song I cant help but think about how he must have felt when he got back from a tour to face the loss of his two children in a house fire. Roy was no stranger to the deepest of tragedy the loss of not one, but two children. Roy died young and a broken heart added to his untimely death. RIP.
Also his first wife died in an automobile accident. God bless you Roy.
I love when young people discover the greats! My dad turned me on to Roy and The Ventures, and I turned my late ex husband on to Roy.. it’s like once you discover Roy, you’re a fan for life!
I think he had a 4 octave range. That's why he can follow melodic progressions to places others can't go. What a smoooooth song.
Some say 7
I just love Roy Orbison 🥰 it always amazed me how his mouth barely seemed to open or move and yet the magic of his voice just cut through. He’s incredible!!
Im a 62 year old white clod hopper of a man. Love the both of you and this takes me back to 5 years old. Thank you for the wondrous memories.
To call it smooth as butter doesn't even do that justice.
He was around before synthesizers and computer enhancements. That's why he was legendary.
Nobody, not even his friend Elvis, was like him. They were each their own level
The song Crying by Roy is Awesome .
I heard it was said that when he wrote it, he first asked Elvis to record it, and he turned him down, then asked The Everly Brothers, they also said no…thank goodness he did it himself…
The voice of an angel that is a direct quote from Elvis Presley himself about Roy Orbison. He may not have liked the Beatles very much but he loved Roy Orbison Roy used to open for him and would tease him he would even flip up his collar and imitate Elvis sometime it used to it used to make Elvis laugh.
One of my all-time performers Roy Orbison Elvis Presley liked him so much she gave him the nickname The voice he's really a
With Roy, you didn't know if you were listening to mariachi or opera. He kept you on your toes. With him, it was all about fat and blood. He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop. [After "Ooby Dooby"] he was now singing his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. He sang like a professional criminal ... His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttering to yourself something like, "Man, I don't believe it".
- Bob Dylan
blue angel, danny boy, in dreams, crying, and so many more great songs by him.
Always in my heart Roy; May God forever bless you.
Roy orbison is amazing, sings the best version of blue bayou.
In dreams, crying, pretty woman, running scared, up town are all great songs.
Guy was definitely blessed by God.
Roy Orbison- Dream Baby ( from the Black and white night )
This entire video is amazing! An all-star band, performing for an all-star audience. Cher, Billy Idol and many others in that audience.
Great reaction ! I love Roy !
The original recording he did was even better. ❤️
I'm so glad y'all have enjoyed and learned more about the American Song Book.
Mad respect from so many brilliant musicians backing up this genius. ♥️
As you said, thank you for turning a bad work day around by giving me youth, when romance was still king in music.
such a beautiful song!!
this is roy!!!
What a great voice he had! ❤️
Very few artist cause such emotional reaction as Roy did! There was only one Roy!
This concert was a couple decades after he first recorded this song. And his voice still can do that?
One of the SUN Recordings classics. Listen to the SUN, and Monument Recordings for his best stuff. He was great with rockabilly stuff. Him, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all came out around the same time. The mid 50's. Sun is the original studio that Rufus Thomas came out of. For a little history on classic Music, look up Sam Phillips. Then listen to a lot of Sun Recordings. As far as operetic voices are concerned, Roy Orbison was long before Freddy Mercury.
WOW young lady you have a wonderful singing voice.
I absolutely love you guys. You totally relax me at the end of brutal days. And your insight and open mindedness is above all else. Thank you.
Seeing Mel react to those high notes, thought you would like to check out the jam session with Gatlin Brothers, Barry Gibb, and Roy Orbison singing Indian Summer.
Roy Orbison the greatest voice of all time. 'Elvis Presley'
Y'all ought to watch that entire show. It's magic from beginning to end! Operatic Rockabilly!
The Voice Mr Roy Orbison!!! ❤️
Our entire American culture has had the very best music artists in the world. We are all very special people .
Your reactions are great! Keep it going. You would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Roy's In Dreams from the Black and White Night concert. Best ever
Überall wurden du geliebt,,,was das bloß zu bedeuten hatte,,du lieber netter Sänger,,Dankeschön roy Orbison ❤❤
Roy was from a very small town in West Texas, about 30 miles from the small town in SE New Mexico where I grew up. I’ve heard stories of him jamming with the locals before he was a star. Sadly that was just a little bit before my time. Even though our part of the country was sparsely populated, it produced a lot of musical icons like Roy (Wink TX), Buddy Holly and Mac Davis (Lubbock TX), and Waylon Jennings (Littlefield TX) to name a few. You should definitely react to some Waylon songs. Love you guys. ❤✌🏻
Love this concert. This was not long before he died and he still could hit those notes. I think it's in the song "Crying" from this concert, that you can see the look of sheer admiration on the face of Bruce Springsteen (playing in Roy's band on this concert) when he hits his high notes. I mentioned some of these songs in another post for your reaction to "Crying", but again, these songs will blow your mind:
Blue Angel
It's Over
In Dreams
Unique voice.
You are right! Roy was one of a kind.
Roy Orbison in his prime, was absolutely amazing.
Great singer..song..Enjoyed that you both liked it..
My mother heard this song on the radio...I was in high school...and she went to the record store and bought it!
Roy is a one of a kind. My fav is You Got It, it's a must do. Need to check his music out with Traveling Wilburys.
This was a TV special ["Black and White Night"] done in 1988 shortly before he died, purposely filmed in black and white to set the mood of the era that Orbison had all his big hits. There were several guest artists [songwriters/performers, musicians in some cases usually only well known by performers rather than the general public] on this including: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, KD Lange, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, JD Southern, Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes [singer-duet with Joe Cocker "Up Where We Belong" and many other credits], James Burton [famous as Ricky Nelson's and later Elvis' lead guitar player, many famous records in the studio no one knows he played on], the list goes on and on. Many younger folks today have no clue who these people were except those they may have already reacted to online. Audience was cheering a lot, appears they didn't know if he could still hit those high notes at age 52!!! It appears he surprised the hell of them! What way to go out if you have go....
Just love Roy Orbison .... 💖💖💖💖💖💖
JUST A GREAT BEAUTIFULLLLL SONG OF COURSE YOU GUYS! :)
Roy traveled the USA under the Sun Records Label with Johnny Cash, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis...can you imagine those 4 with their 4 different styles and personalities coming to your towns movie theatre on Friday and Saturday night? Elvis said Roy was the best singer he ever knew...
Lovely! Thank you for reacting. ♥️♥️♥️
I love your expressions listening to “The Big O”...!!!!
One of the greatest voices ever! Loved Him in concert.
I saw him twice live in the 70's and he could do that live all night long.
I love his song You got it. And dream baby.
even when he got old he could still belt out those notes..
I'm glad you rewound that part. I was waiting for your reaction at that moment. My dad had all his records so I grew up listening to the 50's and 60's and Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley were my favorite records to listen to. My absolute favorite was Elvis' 2nd album in 1956.
My dad also recorded all the records he had on 8 track tapes to play in the car. If you don't know what 8 track tapes are, please look it up. They were before cassettes. I still have my dad's 8 track player (from the 60's) and 8 track tapes in the garage. The player still works!
wow very nice comment about your father sadly all my children never speaks to me anymore its a sad part of my life but I am now 71 and happy living my life in another country but I had to tell you this......Yes i had many 8 tracks, reel to reel tapes, record albums, and the cassette tapes then even CD's and all I do is listen to music and watch UA-cam channels like this.......
@@wildbill7081 I'm sad to hear your children don't speak to you. I live with my dad. He is 85 now and I'm 55.
I remember having a home stereo with an 8 track player. My first car, a 1979 Mustang had an 8 track player in it.
I thought it was so cool until I started buying cassettes, then needed cassette players.
@@wildbill7081 What country did you move to, if you don't mind me asking.
@@ajruther67 I moved to the Philippines and this was in the 90's and only been back to the US to get operation to remove skin cancer on my nose.
@@ajruther67 I'm in my 50s and wasn't life,music and socializing so awesome in the 80s ?
Like you, my father influenced some of my musical tastes, Roy, Neil diamond, Bob seger, etc...
On the flipside, i still rock with heavy metal bands and the classic rock bands.
Fell in love with him when he came out. His voice and music melted us. ❤❤❤
I met Roy Orbison before. He was playing golf in Jacksonville, Florida right behind me and never expected it.
Great song great singer royorbison was one of the best voices ever
Beautiful. Ethereal.
Elvis Presley said Roy had the best voice he ever heard.
Essential Roy Orbison: "Running Scared", "In Dreams", and "It's Over".
YOU'RE AWESOME YOURSELVES SHAWN AND MEL SO!!! :)
I think this was a VH1 special. All superstars up on stage with Roy Orbison. Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, etc. Nice reaction! 😉
Some great entertainers backing him up!!! They were all having so much fun!
Roy Orbison was the greatest singer to ever come out of America. Possibly the greatest voice on the planet. Saw Roy when he toured with the Beatles in the UK 1964. He was MAGIC. Saw him later touring the UK still MAGIC he was a one off will always be my number one pick to listen to. 😎😎😎😎👑👑
All I have 2 say, is they must have ONE hell of a Concert going on Whete We go from HERE
I love me some Roy Orbison! An amazing artist! Great reaction!
I was brought up listening to Roy was my mum's favourite
A lot of musical star power on that stage. All were there to pay tribute to the great Roy Orbison.
Nothing but love for Roy I think I was about fourteen when he passed. And I'll be honest it felt like a gut punch.. I had just lost my grandmother he was really like a mother to me and when she died I had this like delayed morning thing. And Roy orbison's grieving his songs is what made me be able to properly grieve. And it may sound stupid but it hurt just as much when he died. And I still feel the loss after all these years. But nothing but love for Roy❤🎉
this whole film is incredible! definitely worth watching the entire thing!
It was said that the note he can reach was as highest as a opera singer (can't remember his name), the only 2 that can do it...he was great!
Old guy heaven. Thank you to the nth power!!
If I'm not mistaken, Roy Orbison wrote this for Elvis. Instead Elvis suggested he record Only The Lonely and the rest is history.
A great 1961 hit to react to: Curtis Lee - Pretty Little Angel Eyes - Original. Was very very popular in 1961...
Roy Orbison is one of my favorites! Expecting you guys' reactions to more of his songs! Please try Kind Of A Drag, Hey Baby, Susan, Don't You Care, Mercy,Mercy,Mercy,......by The Buckinghams. Thank you!
All time Top tier voice!
You have to watch the entire concert. Unbelievable.
Legendary Performance
Unfortunately, he passed at 52 with a heart attack. RIP for all of the happiness. I use to drive past his house a lot and Johnny Cash at the time lived two houses down. I could not afford a house there, just wanted to see.
It's great the youngter's appreciate these great singers from the old day's !
a reporter once ask ELVIS, "What does it feel like to be the greatest singer on earth?" Elvis replied, "I dont know, I havent spoken to Roy Orbison in the past couple of months."
He was the real deal, so talented.
Back in the day, the girls loved Elvis, but the guys: Orbison spoke to them... One of my all time favorites.
