A long time ago when I used to work room service, I met Roy Orbison I was very happy to spend more than half an hour talking with him. I asked him why he always wore black, and he said once when he was out on tour there was a fire at his home and his wife and his child were killed. He said he'd never wear anything but black again. He seemed to be an extremely nice man

You know that you're a musical God when you got back up like that also when you used to open for Elvis and tease him and Elvis didn't mind. People wanted to work with Roy constantly even people and other music groups like U2.. and as someone else pointed out even Elvis Costello. So many singers from so many walks alive.. used to clamor to work with him so yeah you know you have arrived when you're that much of a legend. But he was such a nice guy such a humble guy on the stage with a beetle, Tom Petty Jeff Lynne oh the life he had.

Even the last band he played & sang with, the supergroup The Travelin' Wilburys, knew what a gem they had working with them. He passed away while with that band, & in the video for their song, "The End Of The Line", they had a guitar in a haunted rocking chair, & a photo of Roy. That band featured Roy, George Harrison of The Beatles, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Tom Petty of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, & the great Bob Dylan. A true collection of musical genius.

I loved that man. His life was sad, his wife was killed in an accident. Then he was on stage when his house burned down killing his two sons. I was so happy he eventually married again. You have lots more of his amazing voice to discover. He was a sweet man, he had a heart bypass surgery and two weeks later a blood clot killed him. He should still be here. Thank you.

With Roy, you didn't know if you were listening to mariachi or opera. He kept you on your toes. With him, it was all about fat and blood. He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop. [After "Ooby Dooby"] he was now singing his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. He sang like a professional criminal ... His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttering to yourself something like, "Man, I don't believe it".

One of the SUN Recordings classics. Listen to the SUN, and Monument Recordings for his best stuff. He was great with rockabilly stuff. Him, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all came out around the same time. The mid 50's. Sun is the original studio that Rufus Thomas came out of. For a little history on classic Music, look up Sam Phillips. Then listen to a lot of Sun Recordings. As far as operetic voices are concerned, Roy Orbison was long before Freddy Mercury.

Roy was from a very small town in West Texas, about 30 miles from the small town in SE New Mexico where I grew up. I’ve heard stories of him jamming with the locals before he was a star. Sadly that was just a little bit before my time. Even though our part of the country was sparsely populated, it produced a lot of musical icons like Roy (Wink TX), Buddy Holly and Mac Davis (Lubbock TX), and Waylon Jennings (Littlefield TX) to name a few. You should definitely react to some Waylon songs. Love you guys. ❤✌🏻

Love this concert. This was not long before he died and he still could hit those notes. I think it's in the song "Crying" from this concert, that you can see the look of sheer admiration on the face of Bruce Springsteen (playing in Roy's band on this concert) when he hits his high notes. I mentioned some of these songs in another post for your reaction to "Crying", but again, these songs will blow your mind:
    Blue Angel

This was a TV special ["Black and White Night"] done in 1988 shortly before he died, purposely filmed in black and white to set the mood of the era that Orbison had all his big hits. There were several guest artists [songwriters/performers, musicians in some cases usually only well known by performers rather than the general public] on this including: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, KD Lange, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, JD Southern, Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes [singer-duet with Joe Cocker "Up Where We Belong" and many other credits], James Burton [famous as Ricky Nelson's and later Elvis' lead guitar player, many famous records in the studio no one knows he played on], the list goes on and on. Many younger folks today have no clue who these people were except those they may have already reacted to online. Audience was cheering a lot, appears they didn't know if he could still hit those high notes at age 52!!! It appears he surprised the hell of them! What way to go out if you have go....

Unfortunately, he passed at 52 with a heart attack. RIP for all of the happiness. I use to drive past his house a lot and Johnny Cash at the time lived two houses down. I could not afford a house there, just wanted to see.
