I really miss 80s/90s award show performances. They kept the camera on the artist basically 100% of the time.
No cut aways to the audience.
You are able to fully take in choreography bc it's all on screen the entire time.
One of madonna best live performances. Those dance breaks are fire and are my favorite madonna dance moments.
Love her hair like that.😍
They do it even during the memorial part! While photos of the deceased are shown, the camera keeps floating around.
I was working in a restaurant waiting tables when it premiered on TV. The whole entire restaurant and bar stopped to watch her performance.....Now that is a true superstar!
oh geez
Last year in 2021 I was basically in the same situation. Working in a restaurant while the VMAs were on the television. Instead of watching a performance, everyone was horrified at how much Madonna has changed when she did her opening monologue.
I wish I was around when she was in her prime. It would've be nice to witness
Yeahh
@@gregory7567 Look in the mirror DUMBASS
Sad that you think that just because people in a restaurant stopped to watch a performance the person performing is a superstar. If that were true, what GREGORY says below wouldn't be so on point. A lesson in life for you King Philip: *All attention ain't good attention.* Again, see GREGORY'S comment below. This comment is speaking directly to YOUR logic.
God Niki and Donna were literally the best backup singers ever! It was magic with those three together.
Yes they were that was the best team
20 feet from stardom right?
Agreed! And that's saying a lot considering all the amazing backup singers Madonna has worked with and toured with!
They were the perfect balance and all 3 were perfect together.
I loved them..
They seem like extensions of Madonna rather than backup singers. Just saw Celebration tour last night in Atlanta. There were no backup singers at all. She was having vocal problems which she admitted. Could not figure why such a demanding show/tour would have no backup singers. Madonna's lower range sounded quite beautiful at times last night. In an interview Donna says this range is where Madonna's magic is, but that she doesn't use it nearly enough.
I love how you are able to hear that there’s no autotone. She is able to dance and sing perfectly at the same time. That’s a true superstar!
Now, this is an ICONIC Performance!
Love it!!!
MrRD1981 I love you!!!
+MrRD1981, hey! I remember you fron the Ghostown video!! How are you? Did you see Madonnas True Blue performance in Madison Square Garden sept. This year? Sean penn was there& she wrote song for him 1987,& she looked SO PRETTY, like Desperately Seeking Susan hair& makeup& OMG WAS so romantic bc she kept looking at him& starts to cry in the song True blue😏check it out its really cool✌🏾️peace!
this bitch slayed back in 89. edger brash and bold with attitude not like her today.
she was great and with no great scenography!
Love her or loathe her. You can't deny her stage presence and her power. Legendary and a true Icon.
Absolutely! What I love about this performance is it is stripped down to just singing, dancing...performing without elaborate sets, costumes, or effects. Just Awesome!
The most wealthiest successful female entertainers of all time.
I WAS SHOCKED IN AWE OF HER PERFORMANCE REALLY
I still love her, Madonna, loathe Guy Richie, I am very lucky to meet her with children in India, one word from me to her" How dare are you to be so Gorgeous.her reply how is your indian women are very attractive & gorgeous.
she does have the presence for sure. not that much talent.
It's like her most giddily self-assured performance, a great live vocal, peak of her dancing prowess, and she seems totally thrilled with every second of it. Also, this is one example of why she's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This rocks.
Right, giddy is a good word. The precision of the performance says serious, disciplined individual/boss, but shes still girlish enough to show jousness. I didn't realize at the time but this Madanna phase was beautiful
👍♥️🔥🐐🎸
Look at them super modes
Models
That little ‘Yeah’ as she walked off. 😮😊
I really remember when this was aired on Tv, Everybody was shocked with this performance. There was no female artist before her who was performing like that who is so bold and liberating. She was the baddest girl of the 80s. Everybody was always waiting for her live shows and music video in MTV, she was a force to be reckoned!! She was the template for every female artist today. She had pushed the boundaries for woman in music. All Hail the Queen of Pop!!
Her inspiration it's on Raffaella Carra's disco performances in the 70's. Both were amazing at the peak of their careers and with Italian background.
I agree. My teen years were in the 80's. I got the privilege to experience her fully. I'm so fortunate.
I remember sleeping out at the mall all night so we can get her concert tickets for blonde ambition. It was my first tour of hers I seen her probably about 7 times.
All Hail the QUEEN
SHE IS BAD AS HELL!!!! CONFIDENCE
I was born 1970 and I had the privilege to experience the full Madonna experience of the 80's. The cultural impact was tremendous. She was large and in charge. A boss. She was in total control and wasn't shy about it in performances. She was woman empowerment personified. She had the power and wielded it with sharp thoughtful focus.
she was born 58
A strong woman w raw sex appeal although a bit embarrassing at times . Still love her madly
lucky you. you witnessed pop royalty. Madonna, mj, prince and britney!!!
@@satwikbardhan3245 britney is not at the same level as those other people.
@@johnsonmark65 Well shes a different era
This performance is f*ing FANTASTIC!!
no auto tune, no lip sync, just raw unmitigated talent
True. The verses are completely her live. And while you can tell she's singing over a recorded pre-chorus and chorus, you can actually hear her live voice over it, so she's technically not lip syncing.
Queen!
Best performance ever of a song
@@47imagine 100% agree ;)
It was flawless
She’s always been so ahead of her time! What an icon!!!
The Number One
I love how she walked off stage like "Yeah!" She knew she was absolutely AMAZING.
You are so right. Amazing Madonna!!!
lol i love that too . i laugh so hard every time :) ... .YEA~!!
And the high-fives to Donna and Nikki- HELL “YEAH!” Now THAT is girl power.
She is sooo strong, too!!! 💝👑
God bless Madonna ♥️

I miss this Madonna 😢
I’m sure she does too
Same
She just got older, can’t stay young forever 😢
My all time favorite live of Madonna. Its just so...Madonna. Bad ass and best performance.
"Express Yourself" and "Vogue" respectively in 1989 and 1990 are the two performances that really made the MTV Vma's. They can't be topped. This was a vocal performance in which Madonna proved that she could sing and had the ability to sing and dance (technically) at the same time with no pre-recorded vocals or other tricks, not to mention the song that is the ultimate female anthem. "Vogue" in 1990 was a theatrical visual performance that also involved quite difficult dance lines considering the heavy outfits. The song is the ultimate campy song. No other like Madonna, she's the Queen ⭐👑⭐👑
Yes. 89-90 is quintessential Madonna. ❤
Totally agree besides the whole “difficult dance lines” in Vogue?? There was WAY more dancing in this performance!! 😉💋💋
Too few people lose their time watching ang try to value this that you write. It is not an easy work, to sing and dance at the same time, not at all. Madonna is an iconic, legendary warrior. 🌹🖤💎⚔🕯
I'm not really positive that she was singing that whole thing though, at minimum had a lot of backing tracks
@@jtors5 Madonna has almost always sung live over a vocal backing track, with live mixing done to bring the pre-recorded parts up when the dancing got heavy so the audience wouldn't hear her out of breath (and out of tune). There are few exceptions - she usually sings her ballads completely live - but you are right, it's obvious she's singing over a vocal track here. At least she's not completely lip-syncing, like many pop divas do.
― I remember when this aired and I also lived and went clubbing through the 80s. Graduated in 84. No matter what anyone says today, she helped make it one of the greatest musical decades ever. I remember being on the dance floor looking up at a huge screen to see "Material Girl" or "Papa Don't Preach" or "La Isla Bonita" playing while we danced all night long until morning. Non-stop hits, year after year in the 80s. One great thing about getting older, I can say I lived the 80s and they were Awesome. Thanks, Madonna.
Tim 17 Consecutive Top 5 songs in the 80s. Nobody will beat that record, can't think of anyone who came close. Sorry Taylor, Arianne, Cardi, y'all ain't never touching that record.
Amen.
Tim , class of 84 here as well!
U are so right the 80 s were the best ever!
agreed!!
No one will ever beat this performance. Pure perfection! Nothing better❤
👍🔥🎸♥️🐐
Her “how” when she’s bending backward to get her jacket is incredible...such control. Epic performance
For me, Donna DeLory and Nikki Harris are still her best backup vocalist. Their voices are always in sync and complements each other well.
And they danced so fine too!
I couldn't agree more.
@@kcanded ⁰
...AGREED, 110%!!....
yes their 3 voices were so GREAT together !
I remember watching this in 89 when MTV was actually MTV. She stole the show. Still holds up almost 27 years later. None of these women 2day can touch Madonna on their best day. The ultimate entertainer! !!
So nicely put!
+Drew Deflon Right on. This is why we STILL talk about Madonna.
+Laceykat66 Exactly!
+Drew Deflon The best thing now is we can watch it and pause it back then I was glued to the tv worried if I blinked I'd miss something, thank God we can go on here and look up any of her live shows and go back in time, that lovely nostalgia
+etherealmist76 gaga totally ripped this whole song format and reworked it into born this way she's great in her own right but I think Madonna Courtney Love and Lady Gaga are all cut from similar cloth and they're all wonderful
The work ethic is unparalleled.
This may not be her most iconic VMA performance but it’s always been my favorite. Just an incredible performer at the peak of her talent. And her dancers are just as good!
Fuck she belted at 4:30! "What you need is a big strong hand!". That was impressive with all those moves.
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the two backup dancers, who are basically giving the same performance.
Backing vocalists and dancers!!
Donna DeLory and Niki Harris ♥️♥️
@@jean.rdoy11 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I always loved them! Bravo!
Here, here!
Like 2 planets revolving around the sun.
She was so fucking talented. No backup track. Straight up dancing and singing. We never see that today.
And she didn't have to be basically nude either.
She is so fucking talented.
💯
In her prime. She WAS the 80's. 💖
And now she’s an embarrassment
Madonna is so talented, and this is great this performance is so 80's, it has everything, like the hair makeup, dancing singing the lyrics are so amazing.
This performance is pure perfection: 1. The intro with a silhouette of Madonna, 2. the descent down the stairs as each step is illuminated, 3. the live singing, 4. the flawless choreography, 5. the camera work. EVERYTHING!
Just to be a picky bitch. I think the screen went up a little to late and some of the camera work was sketchy in parts, like during the 1st dance break when she kicks her leg the light is so bright you can’t see her. Also, I always thought the part where she kicks the chair over at the end should’ve been more in focus, as so many people miss her even doing it.
It was the precursor for the "Blonde Ambition" tour performance. I think it was a great way to perform it LIVE at the VMAs just prior to the tour launch. Brilliant "product placement" if you ask me.
Her hair tho??? She looks like Tima Turner lol
And the wardrobe!! Damn they look good in them suits!
1. Should be SEXY! Madonna was sex!
I wish there were more performances like this nowadays. This is real performance art
+sweet0pie Exactly!

MADONNA'S BACK.UP SINGERS / DANCERS WERE "INSANELY" GREAT !!!❤❤❤
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Madonna! The one and only...sings, dances, flexes, poses, boss, legend. Thank you for everything xXx

Yeah, her work ethic is, like, hot. Lol, like I used to just think she was a beautiful star, but 32 years later I understand that her focus and dedication is what I should have been admiring. And to this day, the performance is gorgeous. God could I need out and share my feelings, but yk what I mean
Almost 30 years ago! So good, only 3 women on stage, 3 chairs and couple of stairs, amasing. This was the era of real music, and great performaces on VMA's, and this one is probably one of the greatest. She is suach a performer and amasing entertainer, she hooked the audience with first 30 seconds. I remember this so vividly, and i can barely songs with the years they were released. Much better times.

She's singing and dancing at the same time QUEEN👑
AND not lip synching and killing it too!
Wow. She was even more sublime than I remembered. What an absolute powerhouse, 100% in control. Incredible message for women. ❤💪
And this is why she will always be the Queen of Pop
Queen Of Pop? Are you psychotic? She stretches way beyond pop culture. Madonna is the true female ICON of music. At 60 she's still performing like she was 30 and just released another massive hit in 2019.
wow, Nikki and Donna were amazing singers and dancers too... Madonna really surrounded herself with the best talent. They made a great team!

I'm so glad I lived in the Time of Madonna, Michael, Janet, Culture Club, Prince, Wham/George Michael, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran...etc. So much amazing talent and music!!!
She was so good. She rarely missteps. All while singing, it's incredible.
This is really great. She's strutting strong beautiful and expressing a wonderful message for other women. Don't settle for second best, believe in yourself, if the time isn't right then move on. She is singing and dancing amazing. Very hard working person. Truly one in a million.

This vocal harmony between Madonna, Niki, and Donna is EXTREMELY underrated! I wish Madonna would do an acoustic tour with these girls.
Mr. T Yesssssss! Niki and Donna gave Madonna’s vocals that extra something! Love them 🎤🎤🎤
I always say that 15 or so year period they worked together, on records and on tours, was Peak Madonna. She's had a few decent singles since, but nothing touches that Madonna, Niki and Donna period. I wish I knew why they suddenly just stopped working together....their voices blended beautifully.
Acoustic? No. I would however love for them to return in this form, the trio.

I never get tired of watching Madonna
Madonna brought this enormous positivity and joy to the world.
My jaw drops the moment that beat starts. Still so fresh!!
What makes her so captivating is her embrace of her femeninity and masculinity. And clearly in this performance she is utilizing her boisterous Electra complex. This is how u do it. U give it your ALL!
Well said 👍
"Electra complex"? That's a girl's fixation with (attraction to, not identification with) her father; counterpart of a boy's Oedipal complex, attraction to his mother. Androgyny--the manifestation of features and functions of both sexes--is a separate phenomenon.
Nada a ver
Freud e seu machismo nojento
can't you just approve of her stuff without the cheap armchair psychology? elektra complex has nothing to do with this performance.
i will never tire of viewing this stunning musical and dance performance. i don't think most humans can even begin to understand the levels of artistry embedded within this utterly genius piece of performance art. don't forget that this is a classically trained ballerina who is several steps ahead of all of us
🔥👍
So true. She is not just better than any other popstar, she does something different. This is art in pure form. Like a sculpture or painting it stands their.
It’s the ‘yah’ for me… every time!
The part of "Dance and sing get up and do your thing" is so iconic

That part is a verse from Everybody song (1983 first album)

This is pure entertainment. The dancing and the lyrics are brilliant. People who say Madonna hasn’t got the best voice in the world, miss the point.
She has nothing close to the "best voice in the world" which she would even admit herself, lol. There's no "point" to miss. She's a great performer/entertainer, as seen in this video. She's never been a good vocalist. She's not even a mediocre one.
