This performance is so iconic that no one has ever complained this was lipsynced so unapologetically she didn't even wore a mic. Edit: chill! I didn't say it in a mean way. Just pop royalty is allowed to lipsync. Specially those who danced the hell out of theirs in their prime (such Madonna, Britney, Janet)
I knew right away! No mic! No backup singers! But I understand how could she really not!!!! But I loved her performance all based on Shakespeare! Drag is from Shakespeare! He had only male actors so you would see drag doing role as girl!!! That's where drag queen originated from!
@Kiko Jikoo No, they're not. The LGBTQ+ (specially the transgender community) community are mocked way worst during the time that this performance happened. Celebrating the LGBTQ+ community back then is literally playing with fire.
I saw the Blonde Ambition Tour & couldn't believe my eyes & ears. Madonna was such a powerhouse & was moving, singing & dancing out of her skin!!!! Always adored her, but gained so much more respect for her as an artist, icon and mother. We are blessed by her presence!! A truly beautiful woman and is her own creation. 👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟👑👑👑👑👑
The fact that this performance could be done the exact same way in 2022 and still eat the new girls alive is testimonial of how legendary and ahead of her time she was and is.
1 - PERFECT choreography; 2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters; 3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music; 4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness; 5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it; 6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence; 7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience; 8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way; 9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway. 10 - how everyone on stage not only has a chance to shine but is also there for a REASON. all of them actuallycontribute to the storytelling of the piece. 11 - the fact that all of this was done in 1990, when she was one of the fery few artists who pushed the boundaries between pop music, sex and art. this performance is one of the many reasons why she's the GOAT in pop music. loved this since i was a kid and will love it forever.
This is also more about the movie “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna is even wearing one of the dresses Glenn Close wore for that movie. They were on tour in France, and they were playing charades, and one of the charades was “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna said it was very Vogue.
Probably one of the best performances ever. That woman is truely an Artist. The whole Marie-Antoinette vs Vogue was a genious idea. That woman is culturally in a very high level.
Were the fans pre-recorded? The sync would be incredibly hard to pull off. All you would need to do is mic the thing properly. You can hide quite a lot in those corsets ;) I was hearing voices come in and out of double tracking in a really interesting way. I suspect that when Madonna said “pose” that was live though much of it was synced. This performance is probably the best thing that Madonna ever did and the audio production is a fascinating part of it.
It's incredible how this woman is far away forward her time. The Fans and the Haters don't get her at all. Everybody talking about lip syncing and no one understands what she's doing there. She wanted to do a new Video for Vogue. A live video in one take, without editing. It was the first time someone tried to do that. The performance was used like a "single" for her video collections and. A celebration of MTV and Madonna's Career. That was a perfect performance, but was not meant to be a live show, it was meant to be a dancing painting in form of a live video. That's so fucking crazy and amazing. She was at the highest top of her game.
in the Balls of NYC (where vogueing came from}, lip syncing is what the performers did. The dancing and attire were the attraction. This performance follows that tradition. New outfits for the next themed Ball. Pose the tv show is a look into that scene and era. It is an excellent show. They should be starting a new season soon.
This is the greatest choreographed live performance of all time. Raunchy and elegant at the same time. Artistic and comedic. I can't think of a greater act that I have seen on stage. No one has been able to pull it off since.
Madonna had gays on stage with her at a time when she was the biggest star in the world, and when most gay men had a stigma against them that was further exacerbated by the AIDS epidemic. That's a true ally, and I cannot express how much I love Madonna. She should be respected and admired for everything that she has done.
A masterpiece. I watch this performance several times a week. It gets better every time. Madonna is a true artist. Sometimes I wonder what her kids think when they see everything she has done. Music, movies, concerts, books, etc. If you want to see another good performance check out into the groove from Argentina. It will make you have a good day, ya Vogue 1990 mtv awards is amazing.

The best thing is taking a popular song (and video for the 90s) at an awards show to create an original performance with original costuming and semi reminiscent choreography of the music video amd make a one of a kind performance. This wasn't recreated. This was original. And that is what makes Madonna part an icon in the last 40 years of music, video, dance, and persona.

Revolutionary nature aside, she honestly looks stunning here. Whoever did the costume+makeup coordination really nailed the look and made her seem almost ethereal, just, wow.
It’s surprisingly historically accurate and just beautiful. I love the robes anglaises and the powdered wigs. The royal courts of the late 1700s were extremely sexually charged and playful so this isn’t too far off from the way they’d have acted! It’s so fun and you can tell she really loves her dancers. The execution of this ambitious performance was impeccable. Everyone was so on their game. Just the flipping of the fans can you imagine if one of them had fumbled? But nobody did. Right to the end where the chaise lounge is right where it needs to be and she sits with everyone angled in close to their queen , just a perfect, fun, tongue in cheek, professional, and elegant performance.
I read somewhere that the clapping after the fans were tossed was a real clap, because apparently the ladies were not good at catching them during rehearsal. :)
People complaining that she isn't singing live have completely missed the point. In the Ballroom scene NO ONE sings. Madonna lip synching (hence no microphone) to her own tune is both clever, and a tribute to the club culture where Vogueing was born. Trivia : Madonna used the same dress used by Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons.

Nearly 35 years later I'm looking at this performance, and realizing that it is sheer genius, and that it totally stands the test of time. It would dominate any "diva"'s performance today. By a mile. Bravo, Madonna, dancers, and choreographer! Phenomenal!
A few years earlier, Madonna performed “like a virgin,“ at the MTV awards and it cemented her place in popmusic stardom. This cemented her place in pop music superstardom. It’s a little ironic, as well As iconic, because the lyrics she is singing are directed to the audience , “you’re a superstar, yeah, that’s what you are.“ Which is a fabulous lyric to bring in the audience and say “you guys are just like me we’re all superstars” everybody could feel it. But she feels It particularly this night. She was a superstar that night and for all the rest.
According to Kevin Stea (the dancer at 0:35), Madonna, Niki and Donna never all 3 caught the fan in any rehearsal. The only time all 3 caught the fan was for this performance. Dancers said they were shaking for this part before the show.
This is true. Jose told me Madonna drove everyone crazy in rehearsals doing this moment over and over and refused to drop it from the performance! The dancers clap with playful attitude right after that moment like an inside joke for them finally getting it right!

Nobody is better than Madonna at live choreographed performance. She is awesome. Btw, at 3:13 Madonna and the two women behind her all three throw their fans and catch them effortlessly. The male dancers give them an extra applause because, according to one of the dancers, they had tried that fan throw dozens of times in practice and at least one of them dropped it every single time. Then they perform in front of a live audience and they all three catch the fans beautifully.
That story is actually not true. This is lip sync. Every sound is prerecorded (eg: whenever they open their fans). So the applause was part of the choreography as well. Still, this performance is intelligent, elegant, sexy, campy, EPIC
The lip sync isn't a problem cause the whole performance was like a scene from a movie and a microphone would've ruin it. Madonna is the peak of pop performances.

Has to be!!!
1 - PERFECT choreography;
2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters;
3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music;
4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness;
5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it;
6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence;
7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience;
8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way;
9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway.

Yes! And I love when they toss the fans in the air and catch them at 3:13. Must have rehearsed that a lot.

People complaining that she isn't singing live have completely missed the point. In the Ballroom scene NO ONE sings. Madonna lip synching (hence no microphone) to her own tune is both clever, and a tribute to the club culture where Vogueing was born.

This is the moment she raised the bar so high that everyone else after this made a more grand effort to present there music in award and live shows.

Pose on Netflix made me understand more about this song and it’s context.

One of her best.
The fan trick had never been successfully completed in rehearsals so the fact that it went off without a hitch on stage is just beautiful!
Iconic
That stage magic!! I watched this live as a kid, stayed up past my bedtime…was utterly mesmerized!
@@WasWasLo *& gildedpeahen ... thats because mY sister (MADONNA) and i...we dO believe in God ~~ ...we Pray...we pray for ourselves ÁND for others ... And if we fall/fail we get up and start walking agAin*
It's from being in the zone, in rehearsals there's no pressure but for the live thing there is and that's what produces the best of us.
@@algebraist1997 so true! There’s a magic in the air when performing. “The act of observation changes the outcome” -some double slit quantum guy 😉
Shout out to the two female backup dancers who also pulled off that fan trick flawlessly at 3:14. Not easy to do live and in front of an audience.
Agreed. Very brave to try and pull that off at such a big event.
They are actual Madonna’s backup singers. Niki Haris and Donna Delory.
@@kazior6521 That’s what I was wondering.
@@kazior6521 I loved Niki and Donna. Especially in Madonna’s ‘Truth or Dare’ movie. They don’t showcase them girls as much as the guys in that movie, but for good reason. Madonna was making a statement….”we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it!!” 🙌♥️
Try it alone in your own room. You'll NEVER do it! Lol.
This is literally art.

That fan flip……I cannot imagine the pressure of not catching it
I know. That fan flip tells you just how in her zone she was going out there. I love the expressions on her face all the way through.
I'm not really a Madonna fan but no one could ever say that Madonna is NOT a legend or an icon because she is. She's an incredible performer and has amazing songs. Maybe not the best live voice but it doesn't matter, still better than what most could ever do.
QUEEN
I think y'all don't realise how different the game was before the internet and wide social media. My main thang was taping songs off the radio cos we was ghetto skint.. Butt that was the skill to get it clean.
Madonna can sing live along real choreography the others can't ua-cam.com/video/gmktAUXTMLY/v-deo.html
She’s NOT a legend. She can’t sing and she can’t dance. She’s hype and production, nothing more
ILovemyOrchids, so this performance right here, thats not a great, intricate choreography?
@@ILoveMyOrchids whether you agree that she should be or not, she IS a legend simply because of her cultural impact
A bit rude they held an awards ceremony in the middle of a Madonna concert
😂😂😂😂
Love it.
Just like a football game in the middle of a Madonna performance in 2012
Honestly though 🤷🏻♀️😝 Don't nobody remember a THING from this awards show, except for *THIS* iconic performance.
Choreograph is good but she is defo lip synching....
33 years later and this is still probably one of the most inclusive shows in the history of VMAs
If by inclusive you mean a poor white boy from Alabama then I agree!!! I love this video!!
Typical White Karen Supremacy
Madonna has a Net Worth of $580 million whilst she exploits the Black Community
And portrays Black Men as gay and subservient (slaves) to her..
The best show of VMA's, I think
@@crownstupid..??

This is the best mtv performance ive ever seen maddona truly is a icon
This performance is gold, I can’t keep my eyes off her.
A philosopher named Nicki Minaj once said, "There's only one Queen and that's Madonna. BITCH!"
Gina Sousa Branco That’s true
Antonio Marruecos Same bro she is a freaking BEAUTIFUL QUEEN GODDESS
I remember watching this when it first aired..I was floored by the costumes, choreography, theatrics, and I already loved the song. Madonna took performances at the VMAs up a million notches when she did this. I wanted to watch it now all these years later to see if I was still in awe of how great the performance was. I think I appreciate it even more now.
I know eh? It's still amazing watching this after all these years.
Extra applause?
The guy on the left smiles as if saying "OMG THEY DID IT"
So cool, thanks for sharing. Indeed, it was a wonderful performance.
That story is actually not true. This is lip sync. Every sound is prerecorded (eg: whenever they open their fans). So the applause was part of the choreography as well. Still, this performance is intelligent, elegant, sexy, campy, EPIC
yeah but... Gaga?
Throwing up the fan and catching it in sync while dancing is just......amazing!
Anyone watching in 2021 cause she’s literally an inspiration and ahead of her time; not to mention she was once other worldly?
Not even in 2021 a better performance than this one.... Such an icon
@@evigkarlek8 Exactly👍🏾
before every single one exam i listen to this, Madonna got me into college
Well Lady Gaga's paparrazi perfomance for mtv in 2009 is up there
Yes she is
The lip sync isn't a problem cause the whole performance was like a scene from a movie and a microphone would've ruin it. Madonna is the peak of pop performances.
She's just mediocre in my opinion. She is so weak vocally that she couldn't sing that easy song live. She built a career off of being controversial, there no real talent to see here.
@@jakemiles1427 no one asked and let people with some knownledge to say if she can sing or not cause i doubt you have
@@naurking5388 I have & indeed she can 😊
Yeahh if it was performed now, she would wear small-white earset microphone
@@naurking5388 It doesn't take an advanced course in vocals to see she is mediocre. There is a clear difference between artists like whitney, mariah and artist like madonna. This woman is a mediocre vocalist and a mediocre dancer and Elton john agrees. You guys are biased because you worship these celebrities but the FACT is she isn't a talented artist she's just a controversial pop artists with a lot hits.
It is unfucking real how strategic and perfect this choreography is! I am always captivated watching this.
