It’s surprisingly historically accurate and just beautiful. I love the robes anglaises and the powdered wigs. The royal courts of the late 1700s were extremely sexually charged and playful so this isn’t too far off from the way they’d have acted! It’s so fun and you can tell she really loves her dancers. It's incredible how this woman is far away forward her time. The Fans and the Haters don't get her at all. Everybody talking about lip syncing and no one understands what she's doing there. She wanted to do a new Video for Vogue. A live video in one take, without editing. It was the first time someone tried to do that. The performance was used like a "single" for her video collections and. A celebration of MTV and Madonna's Career. That was a perfect performance, but was not meant to be a live show, it was meant to be a dancing painting in form of a live video. That's so fucking crazy and amazing. She was at the highest top of her game.
in the Balls of NYC (where vogueing came from}, lip syncing is what the performers did. The dancing and attire were the attraction. This performance follows that tradition. New outfits for the next themed Ball. Pose the tv show is a look into that scene and era. It is an excellent show. They should be starting a new season soon.
1 - PERFECT choreography; 2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters; 3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music; 4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness; 5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it; 6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence; 7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience; 8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way; 9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway. 10 - how everyone on stage not only has a chance to shine but is also there for a REASON. all of them actuallycontribute to the storytelling of the piece. 11 - the fact that all of this was done in 1990, when she was one of the fery few artists who pushed the boundaries between pop music, sex and art. this performance is one of the many reasons why she's the GOAT in pop music. loved this since i was a kid and will love it forever.
This is also more about the movie “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna is even wearing one of the dresses Glenn Close wore for that movie. They were on tour in France, and they were playing charades, and one of the charades was “Dangerous Liaisons” Madonna said it was very Vogue.
@@mjl11 who? Have either of these music groups been played on the radio to where everyone has checked out this mj or prince regardless of whether or not they wanted to?
Were the fans pre-recorded? The sync would be incredibly hard to pull off. All you would need to do is mic the thing properly. You can hide quite a lot in those corsets ;) I was hearing voices come in and out of double tracking in a really interesting way. I suspect that when Madonna said “pose” that was live though much of it was synced. This performance is probably the best thing that Madonna ever did and the audio production is a fascinating part of it.
This performance is so iconic that no one has ever complained this was lipsynced so unapologetically she didn't even wore a mic. Edit: chill! I didn't say it in a mean way. Just pop royalty is allowed to lipsync. Specially those who danced the hell out of theirs in their prime (such Madonna, Britney, Janet)
I knew right away! No mic! No backup singers! But I understand how could she really not!!!! But I loved her performance all based on Shakespeare! Drag is from Shakespeare! He had only male actors so you would see drag doing role as girl!!! That's where drag queen originated from!
The best thing is taking a popular song (and video for the 90s) at an awards show to create an original performance with original costuming and semi reminiscent choreography of the music video amd make a one of a kind performance. This wasn't recreated. This was original. And that is what makes Madonna part an icon in the last 40 years of music, video, dance, and persona.
Yes! I have enjoyed her since 1985. Madonna has influenced so many music artists even today. The fun of Madonna’s career has always remained unpredictable performances live on stage and music choices for her to explore . She represents and inspires people that appreciate her all over the world. Love her or hate her ... the woman is a force to be reckoned with. The media has for years screwed with the truth versus fiction and she’s still here. Nobody can take that from her.
This is the greatest choreographed live performance of all time. Raunchy and elegant at the same time. Artistic and comedic. I can't think of a greater act that I have seen on stage. No one has been able to pull it off since.
I loved life in the artistic, inclusive and hugely creative New York City of the 1980s and 1990s. But I was a Madonna hater. Nearly 35 years later I'm looking at this performance, and realizing that it is sheer genius, and that it totally stands the test of time. It would dominate any "diva"'s performance today. By a mile. Bravo, Madonna, dancers, and choreographer! Phenomenal!
True ART! Nothing else needs to be said. Madonna is an artist and she is an amazing human being and In my opinion she does not get enough credit !! She deserves more love
I think people tend to forget that she is not just a "singer", she's an actual artist, her performances are her art. We don't bash painters for painting nudity, we find it beautiful. This is her art. Its not on a canvas, its moving, it's alive. It is art, and Madonna makes masterpieces. There will never be another artist like her.
@Jeremy Ripton 😱omg 4 real tho‼️She's not maimed nor disfigured; she has now a face that belongs on a monster in a horror movie; a scientific experiment gone woefully wrong; when people say demonic I GET IT--she was a one of a kind of beauty; gorgeous in hair, face, body, ....her gorgeous eyes and mouth❣️omg....what else or WHOM else could've possessed her to do that to her face⁉️‼️😢 It's beyond sad....😞
God bless you and your dearest comment. This woman literally saved my life when I was being bullied and losing my nerves in middle school. 25 years later, and I'll never forget the profound effect she left on me and so many. It's contagious. I realized I could dance and come up with routines on the spot. So, I came out of my shell and started performing at clubs & bars. Best memories of my life!(Thank you Michele, Teresa, Mark, and Pam.)
I just read that they were very nervous about that part because during rehearsals they kept dropping them. So when they all caught the fans during the performance, the others applauded them, as you can see.
1:00 - 1:04 imo the most difficult part for the two female dancers, storm the stage, courtesy, aaand, 4 seconds to stand totally still, and think about everything that can go wrong from here!! :D
The execution of this ambitious performance was impeccable. Everyone was so on their game. Just the flipping of the fans can you imagine if one of them had fumbled? But nobody did. Right to the end where the chaise lounge is right where it needs to be and she sits with everyone angled in close to their queen , just a perfect, fun, tongue in cheek, professional, and elegant performance.
I read somewhere that the clapping after the fans were tossed was a real clap, because apparently the ladies were not good at catching them during rehearsal. :)
A masterpiece. I watch this performance several times a week. It gets better every time. Madonna is a true artist. Sometimes I wonder what her kids think when they see everything she has done. Music, movies, concerts, books, etc. If you want to see another good performance check out into the groove from Argentina. It will make you have a good day, ya Vogue 1990 mtv awards is amazing.
Nobody is better than Madonna at live choreographed performance. She is awesome. Btw, at 3:13 Madonna and the two women behind her all three throw their fans and catch them effortlessly. The male dancers give them an extra applause because, according to one of the dancers, they had tried that fan throw dozens of times in practice and at least one of them dropped it every single time. Then they perform in front of a live audience and they all three catch the fans beautifully.
That story is actually not true. This is lip sync. Every sound is prerecorded (eg: whenever they open their fans). So the applause was part of the choreography as well. Still, this performance is intelligent, elegant, sexy, campy, EPIC

@@tigersfan1993 I didn’t say she specifically requested gay dancers. However, it is a historical fact that during the Vogue/Blonde Ambition Era, every one of those spectacular, beautiful men were/are gay. It was a well-known thing, especially with the release of her book, “Sex.” Also, the art of “Vogue dancing” was created, born, and 100% attributed to the underground Ball scene, made up almost entirely of black & brown gay men. For reference, I implore you to watch the documentary “Paris is Burning,” as well as the FX tv series, “Pose.” Both shine a bright, fascinating light on the vibrant Ballroom culture. And finally, a few years back, a documentary was filmed featuring all of the still living male dancers who worked with and toured the world with Madonna during the aforementioned Vogue/Blonde Ambition Era. It’s heartfelt, funny, nostalgic, entertaining, and beautifully done. So, again, I never said or implied that Madge ever explicitly or specifically requested that her dancers be gay. From where did you glean that? I was simply stating a well-known fact.

1 - PERFECT choreography;
2 - absolutely amazing costumes -- not just for madonna but all of the dancers/characters;
3 - the diversity among her dance crew: we have asian, latino, black, probably all (or most) gay men bringing the ballroom/vogue scene to one of the most important stages in pop music;
4 - referencing marie antoinette, the queen of opulence, carelessness and youthness;
5 - not being afraid of sexuality and being playful and tongue-in-cheek about it;
6 - madonna at one of her peaks of beauty and influence;
7 - the amazing exit with her becoming the one who watches the audience;
8 - nikki and donna nailing every step of the way;
9 - the theatrical feel of the whole performance: this is not supposed to look like a music video or a pop concert -- this is musical theater, camp, broadway.
10 - how everyone on stage not only has a chance to shine but is also there for a REASON. all of them actuallycontribute to the storytelling of the piece.
11 - the fact that all of this was done in 1990, when she was one of the fery few artists who pushed the boundaries between pop music, sex and art.

Look at that ridiculous dress. Yet it was the vogue once in European courts. Super choice for this performance !
@@k_jrin28 what makes me laugh is that her back up singers are involved in the performance !!! if you are going to lip sync do it with style xx
I had the privilege to meet Madonna in Montreal Quebec, it may have been 4 minutes but a hug from the LEGEND, ICON, was the best 4 min. in my life.
I hate you.......
+remy paraskovia , it was pure luck, I met a guy, he turned out to be a paparazzi, he was friends with her, the next night at a club, I met thee Madonna, felt like a dream, she was sweet, nice to meet you handsome, we hugged, I told her I loved her and im Italian too, it was great......never forget that ever.
Johnny Disette now I really hate you .....
Montréal!!
so basically you are the luckiest person ever...How old was she?
3:10 Incredible!!!
I'm sorry but this performance is perfection. Even 30yrs later. I have goose bumps each time I watch it. Wow
SAME!
Beyoncé, that shit,can not compare with the pure talent MADONNA
I’m not a madonna generation, and this video makes me understand why she’s a legend.
she was a hero to the LGBT movement... pushing the limits of sexuality and having a kick ass dance song to go with it.
You have attained enlightenment my child
How old are you, Nandal?
A Legend!
yeeees! i feel the same!

This performance is cultural gold. Not only is it great but it embodies the “Vogue movement”: queer, Black, broke, using fashion, dance and community to FEEL and LOOK RICH. Madonna did that!!!
What she did for the gay community at this time with this performance alone is unmatchable by any human on our planet.

Bullshit!!! This kind of presentation of these overly effeminate men was part of the problem of the gay stereotypes that made many gay me wanna stay in the closet for a long time! My gay cousins and I were offended, and we distanced ourselves from it as far as we could!
@@hectormanuel9793 There is no such thing as "overly effeminate men", effeminate gay men exist and are completely valid, just like you not being one is valid. This comment reeks of internalised homophobia.
@@MrSpaceRaptor what part of what I said, you didn't understand asshole? It's the stereotype that's offensive when the world believes that all gay men are the same!

Dear 😍 you look handsome 😍❤️ And that’s truth, Madonna’s only Queen of Pop.
This is the definition of Iconic.
I would call it the definitive iconic performance for Madonna. It’s my favorite song and performance.

After 30 years, this is still a must-watch.
Yes it is
It's not just a song, then?
Omg I can’t believe it’s 30 years ago
Still gives me chills and I watched it live as a teen. I'm 50 now.
Same. I’m also 50. What a way to welcome in the 90s. Where has the time gone?!
Same here - and look how recently we are commenting. I remember how scandalized people were over this, and by today's standards it seems almost tame. Loved all of it, what a time to be alive.
May this last forever and ever. Amazing!
I never seen this video before. this was gracious

Your artists today COULD NEVERRRRR make such a spectacularly lavish splash. This is excellence. The costume design. The makeup. The choreography. Those gorgeous black & brown gay boys! The attitude. The finesse. The cheekiness. The beauty. The decadence. The song itself! 💯
I’m still blown away.
@@murdoqruckus5243 It’s a joyous, beautiful, sexy, fun splendor to behold! I recall watching it live at age 12- I was blown away then, and I’m blown away now. Madonna and Janet are the two women artists who’ve inspired me the very most. ♥️
Appears, Miley Cyrus is moving to much similar direction. Probably will grow as big. She is phenomenally talented.

As a painter and a designer...this is so aesthetically pleasing. Choreography, costumes, timing, content and composition. BRAVO....in this day and age, I am still in awe of this one.
I totally agree, it's so awesome. The whole gang are superb in this performance.
Only problem is the furniture is not contemporary with the Louis XV costume.
The vogues Vogue better than she does..
Your profession has nothing to do with your comment.
How could Madonna memorize all these moves is beyond me❤… The best song ever 🌹
I'm not really a Madonna fan but no one could ever say that Madonna is NOT a legend or an icon because she is. She's an incredible performer and has amazing songs. Maybe not the best live voice but it doesn't matter, still better than what most could ever do.
QUEEN
I think y'all don't realise how different the game was before the internet and wide social media. My main thang was taping songs off the radio cos we was ghetto skint.. Butt that was the skill to get it clean.
Madonna can sing live along real choreography the others can't ua-cam.com/video/gmktAUXTMLY/v-deo.html
She’s NOT a legend. She can’t sing and she can’t dance. She’s hype and production, nothing more
ILovemyOrchids, so this performance right here, thats not a great, intricate choreography?
@@ILoveMyOrchids whether you agree that she should be or not, she IS a legend simply because of her cultural impact
The audience ain’t hype enough for me. Sis is serving costumes, choreo, a banger single...and doesn’t even get a standing ovation at the end?
baffling tbh
It was the 80’s and the 90’s...people were used to this level of iconic. I really wish I was born in another decade🥺
Like someone stated earlier, Madge confused the straights. Unless you competed in balls or attended them as a spectator, this was something new. They didn't know how to react.
I thought they were already standing lol but yeah they dead
Ummm..they are standing.
The fan trick had never been successfully completed in rehearsals so the fact that it went off without a hitch on stage is just beautiful!
