Definitely an art to build a wood boat, one of the oldest profession's/trade's in the world slowly being lost by new and cheaper materials for lighter and stronger vessels, really makes me appreciate a person like you lou, knowledge you have I hope is not lost and your apprentice's or helpers look, listen, learn and take on-board all you teach, all the way from Australia mate we appreciate the videos keep up the good work.

You mentioned how in N.S. they would change their designs from time to time. My father built wooden power boats back in the tp’s-60’s. He designed his own hulls. After they were built he would take them out for a test. Then on the next one he would change the shape of the hull if he thought it was needed. I remember one test he was really throwing the boat around. He was quite impressed with the stability of that one. All those old builders learned as they went along and we’re always looking for improvements or optimizing a boat for it’s expected use. Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks

Got to ride their bosen s chair they towed us in . I never prayed so much in my life I was 7 but you never forget 65 now !!!

Automotive restorers use a laser based tool to scan the car and that then digitizes the shape into a set of plans. Ford, in designing the new Bronco, scanned the old Bronco in order to get ratios, shapes, etc. Would that work here?
Maybe use a plumb bob, tent stakes, and a tape measure like he hinted on doing. You just establish plumb station points to establish one half of the ship.
Lou needs a folding ruler, pencil and paper. The beauty of watching a true craftsman like Lou, is that he is doing all the work your computer is doing in his head and from experience. Yes, there would be easier ways, but you wouldn’t get to watch how it was done centuries before computers were built. In addition, he isn’t recreating this boat, he is using it for reference to create a different boat with slightly different shape
I saw a guy who bought some old Novi Lobster boat from some Ancient Mariner, and fixed it up a bit for cruising around Lake Erie. Goofy, old, absent-minded professor kind of guy who went fishing in the middle of the night, was half drunk by lunch and asleep by tea time. He tried to see the sunrise two or more miles out on the lake if at all possible from April to September. That was his only goal in life, other than eating a few walleye and drinking some Scotch.
I’m thinking you might need some help with orca, I sure would like to work with you some, as a volunteer of corse, we actually met a few years ago in NY city and had a nice conversation, either way looking forward to the build

dear leo, just thinking after you apply the fiber glass on the boat body, the boat shape looks very nice, why don't you make a mold of the boat - i mean after you finish it- for the body & Deck, and start production?
Because of the warlock was a wooden boat originally.and made into a glass boat for the moive. fiberglass Novi's are a completely different design. Another question to ask is this was the Warlock a built down Keel or was it a deadwood keel . That completely changes the shape of the Keel and the bottom of the boat
yep this will be good , particularly interested in your take on using a woodmizer too quartersaw mixed sizes, have you thought of chainsawing the round intoquarters then milling or halving the trunk with an alaskan mill first? yes i do sawmill with all these in brittany france, including an LT40HD woodmizer

I'm afraid that if you pull your garbage bag oevr the angle as you showed, you'll end up moving the fiberglass away from the corner and leaving with just the wood at the most exposed part... One does not want to apply any uneven pressure over fiberglass during curing, or it'll movefrom where there is more pressure to where these is less, just like a liquid.

@@captaintoyota3171 No. He is not the one that planned on calling it Orca 3. That was another guy. He had people donating money and his project has stalled (at least for now), and he sold the boat that was supposed to be used. The one I am referring to is ORCA REBUILD. This guy has a Lobster Yacht that is much more accurate for the transition. He has been acquiring screen accurate parts for the rebuild for years. He's been planning and working on this for many years. Once he acquired a good boat for the rebuild, he started the process with the boat and each piece that will go on it. Currently, he has stopped work to take care of a very ill family member. Of course, we understand that family comes first. Check out his channel here on UA-cam. He also has FB, IG, and an Etsy store. This is a project of love for him, as he has loved the film since he was very young. He has accepted no financial help from anyone and has no plans to. It will take longer for him, also, since he is doing most all of the work alone and on his off time. But, I've seen the boat and many of the pieces in person. It's going to be AWESOME when he's finished!

The new Glass Cape Island boats are 45 footers with a 5 foot overhang to hold more lobster traps and at least 22 feet wide .

I remember one test he was really throwing the boat around. He was quite impressed with the stability of that one. All those old builders learned as they went along and we’re always looking for improvements or optimizing a boat for it’s expected use. Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks
Those corner glassing tips are awesome! To bad I already glass my boat!
I'm beyond excited for this build. Since the total boat series I've been waiting for a larger open-water build and I can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

Holy smokes Lou! I had to watch more than once to catch all the wisdom just flying out. Great job!!
Great job bringing these two projects together. Love your show.

It warms my heart that Duke looks so good. Good for him!
Hope you're going to return to the vee bottom skiff. I have little interest in Orca, but lots of interest in the skiff.
Wow. I'm in for each episode.
Thanks Lou, I'm going to enjoy both projects!

Those fiberglassing tips are terrific!
Another great series to look forward to , can't wait for the fun to begin ... :-)
And here's wishing you a very happy birthday , have a great day ( what's left of it )
If you contact the “maritime museum of the Atlantic” in Halifax Nova Scotia they have original records of many of the original cape boats built in the area. They are a wealth of knowledge that could help with this build
Awesome as always and I'm really excited about the Orca build.
I was named after my dad s boat a Cape Island boat built by Dave Stevens in Nova Scotia got caught in a November hurricane 50 foot waves run over 3 dark red lobster booies right around the prop headed to Hunts Point NS from Rye NH so lost not knowing if we where off the coast of Mane or Spain drifted like a surfer until we met a Coast Hard cutter off Portland Me. Got to ride their bosen s chair they towed us in . I never prayed so much in my life I was 7 but you never forget 65 now !!!
I love watching him build boats that are small but I am more intrigued in bigger boats
Happy Birthday Lou!!
Love your work Lou.
Nice one
I cant wait for this I will be watching every bit. cant wait nice one

Love your work Louis - Dumb question - Have you considered using vacuum bagging principals to hold you glass tight as is done in the composite boat building industry here in New Zealand
Thanks for another great lesson. I'm eating it up
i have worked on a couple chainsaw green (Stanley Green) lobster boats they just have a sharp look to them and can handle the weather too i am excited for this build
Stanley Greenwood boats from Shag Harbour NS
thanks lou

Took me a moment, but I eventually worked out that a "Novi" is so called because it's a Nova Scotian design?
Looking forward to following this

Automotive restorers use a laser based tool to scan the car and that then digitizes the shape into a set of plans. Ford, in designing the new Bronco, scanned the old Bronco in order to get ratios, shapes, etc. Would that work here?
Maybe use a plumb bob, tent stakes, and a tape measure like he hinted on doing. You just establish plumb station points to establish one half of the ship.
Sure it would. But... for preservation purposes. Its probably expensive as heck.

Wood is a different medium than steel. Literal men work with steel. Artists work with wood.
Another boat coming! Hurrah!
Come up to Prince Edward Island, Lou, lots of NOVIs and northumberland strait boats!
that is some beautiful wood, i could have a hayday there cutting rib stock
incredibly informative - thank you so much for this video
I saw a guy who bought some old Novi Lobster boat from some Ancient Mariner, and fixed it up a bit for cruising around Lake Erie. Goofy, old, absent-minded professor kind of guy who went fishing in the middle of the night, was half drunk by lunch and asleep by tea time. He tried to see the sunrise two or more miles out on the lake if at all possible from April to September. That was his only goal in life, other than eating a few walleye and drinking some Scotch.
That's the third sawyer I've seen missing half of his fingers. Tough job.
I don't know why, but Lou's playing with the "big head" in the lumber yard made me laugh so hard I spritzed a mouthful of coffee on my laptop, LOL.
Bring on some volunteers, they'll learn - and the rest of us will learn along side them!
I’m thinking you might need some help with orca, I sure would like to work with you some, as a volunteer of corse, we actually met a few years ago in NY city and had a nice conversation, either way looking forward to the build

Suggest vacuum bagging to get fiberglass to hug the sharp contour around the chine of the skiff
A wonderful interesting video.
Next build...44 gun frigate...Can't wait.
After Orca
I love the Orka series must call chainsaw in Barrington Nova Scotia his family invented the Cape Island boat . the boat builders sent Dave Stevens to Expo 67 in Montreal Canada he built a 80 footer sail boat with copper nails by himself ! Saw him there !
Hi Lou. Can't wait for the Orca build. The V bottom skiff is looking good 👍 can picture you flying along on the lake. Great video thanks 😊

Looking for the final videos on the w23’ skiff.
dear leo, just thinking after you apply the fiber glass on the boat body, the boat shape looks very nice, why don't you make a mold of the boat - i mean after you finish it- for the body & Deck, and start production?
Steven Spielberg needs to be a patron on this . . .
Big Lou is like you, he likes wooden boats too. One of my missed callings I think would be shipbuilding.

YES YES YES SO pumped for this build. Wana see evilynn go too but at bristol shipwrights its a slower build

@@FriendsandFamilyView yeah i read about that guy. Orca 3 right? But isnt that a refit of an old lobster boat? Boggelo guy right?
This feels like I missed an episode.
I was just about to go to the vid page to see if I had missed one.
Me too. What is this project to build ORCA?

Im Ready ;-)
Just how old was the Warlock?who built the Warlock?what engine was in it?
