Hey Lou, I’m glad somebody had the foresight to record you at work. What a wonderful thing to leave to the woodworking and boat building community. There is nobody in or around woodworking since Norb Abram that explains things better than you just love your videos and learn tons we could get young kids into paying attention, imagine what the future would hold. Keep making them beautiful.
While I'm not a shipwright at all but I am a woodworker and I absolutely love watching these videos because I pick up so many tips . Awesome skill and a really generous man . Bless you .
As usual, you don't disappoint. Love the way you explain the how's and why's of what you do to accomplish a given task. Solid gold information. Greatly appreciate the way you take us under your wing. Keep at it Lou!
Cutting that two degree peak as you came in from each side of the timber then plane to level was masterful. Gonna have to build a boat just so I can try that!
Curious coincidence, Lou, regarding the 2 degree angle. I was watching a UT video about early water distribution, which mentioned an ancient Greek making a tunnel through a mountain. As he couldn't guarantee that his excavations from both ends would meet exactly, he angled them slightly horizontally so that they had to cross at some point. There was no mention about how the vertical alignment was maintained, but the horizontal trick was as clever as yours!
Greetings from Sweden. I have an idea for fun drinking game ;) every time Lou says cut then its time for a shot.... Joking aside i absolutely love your videos man. Keep up the good work!!!!
You truly give Tips from a Shipwright! I may never build a boat but you give me insights into solving other problems that I may encounter in my workshop. Thank you Uncle Lou! Regards from South Africa.
That is a quite something else with interior fittings, propulsion and electrics, the works. At least 3 to 4 years start to finish I recon. I will sure follow!
Love the vids on building Orca .as iam interested in making a pair of model fishing boats approx 39" pitvh pine on oak frame .Which i need some help with the tramsom design as its angled from the stern and in towards the center .I have pics but youtube dosent let you put up pics

Lou, I will be coming up from North Carolina to the Newport Boat Show. I spoke with the folks at Total Boat and saw that you will be at the UA-cam Influencer booth on the North Commercial Warf but nobody could give me dates/times you will be there. Can you provide us with some general date/time info as to when you will be present? I am really looking forward to seeing you there and hope that you autography my "Tips from a Shipwright" ball cap!
Hi Gary, we're excited about it also, it's going to be a good time! Check out the schedule below for our times at the UA-camr Booth but we'll be hanging out all weekend so they'll be plenty of time to chat. Thursday: 10-11AM Friday: 3-4 PM Saturday: 3-4 PM Sunday: 2-3 PM
I would like to see the completion of the v bottom skiff with all the bright work done and see her underway. What happened to that I feel like we've left something undone here. Unless I missed a video.
Hi Kevin, you didn't miss anything, varnishing will be our next episode, we're bouncing back and forth between the V-Bottom and ORCA but we will show the completion of the V-Bottom and of course taking her out on the water.
Very very nicely done Lou, what kind of bedding compound will you be using on the keel joints? Wish I could make it to New Port, but it is a fair piece from Texas
And like a junkie, I tell myself, I am not going to watch another boat building video but Lou, you bastard, your my dealer. I fucking love it. Thank you 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just got here from Engels Coach Shop. You're the chattiest carpenter I've ever seen, that's good. I liked your video format that overlays the workshop scenes to a studio audio, I've been talking to several youtubers to do this, but the guys ignore me, until you appeared to break my patents. []s
Shark jokes aside, as Talky Ho nears completion, ravenous fans in withdrawal from the live oak and purple heart blues will likely resume schooling here.

Looks great Lou! Always exciting to start a new project.
Glad to see you here Bob.
Thanks Bob!
Nice setup and execution on that dangerous plunge cut. Lou is so casual that its easy to miss that this is a high level move.
Thanks Tyler, yes very thought-out and I understand what the saw can and can't do, be safe
Your trick of using the level face with graphite is the same idea as machinists bluing up a machine bed way and scraping it. 😍😍
Great point!

Oh what a series this is gonna be👏🏼
Wow, what a project. This is similar to a Peter Kass boat.
What this guy could do with a builders level.
Oh Joy!! The journey begins!! Awesome Lou, a dream to watch you build her!!
Amazing power on that 8”saw to cut and throw the sawdust like it did!
with a 10 inch blade no less
great construction and very good instruction

Excellent video - thanks!
More great insights and tips...always respect the saw 👍
You bet
Would a 2 degree bevel on the fence, matching the saw, help to make the first plunge?
It is fun to see a project start.
Thanks John, yes bittersweet to see the V-Bottom wrapping up but ORCA has us excited beyond belief!
Beautiful keel start.

@@TipsfromaShipwrightvideos thanks Lou for the information.
Pour la planéité, c'est quand meme plus simple avec une varloppe(grand rabot à main).
I was thinking you'd have done a hook scarf for the keel so they cant slide apart longitudinally, I know they'll be bolted
There's very little force in the boat trying to pull the pieces apart, just not enough advantage to doing in imo
Very very nicely done Lou, what kind of bedding compound will you be using on the keel joints? Wish I could make it to New Port, but it is a fair piece from Texas
Hi Tom, wait and see ;) and you're welcome to visit anytime, we'll certainly let you know if we're ever in the area
Lou, For a 16 foot gentleman runabout, how do you design laminated frames to replace sawn frames?
Either bend them in place or bend 'em on some sort of mold and then fit 'em...whatever works!
The old winding sticks method.
And like a junkie, I tell myself, I am not going to watch another boat building video but Lou, you bastard, your my dealer. I fucking love it. Thank you 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate you saying “inch and a quarter “ and not five quarters.
Do we need to put a beam saw in Lou's hands?
Is the checking on that timber not an issue?
not an issue, much of what you see will be rabbited out to accept the planking
what happened to the skiff ?
She's coming along, new video next week!
Why are you Not finishing the V Bottom?
We're on it, just posted another video on Varnishing, go check it out...Next week we're going to cut down the transom.
This channel name is so wrong. Should be at least "Lessons from a Shipwright". Great job, great channel, learning a lot from a master is a gift.
Did you remove the kickstand on your electric planer? I was thinking about removing mine, I have the same one.
Yes he did. Somewhere there is a video about that adjustment to his planer but I can't remember when - maybe a couple seasons back.
@@muchmorecoffee Ok, thanks.
Why don't you make the keel out of laminated 2x10s?
they won't stay together
