- Here we are reviewing and comparing Harbor Freights new generation of professional Doyle pliers versus there budget professional Quinn pliers. We're comparing the three most common Styles the linesman pliers the needle nose pliers and the side cutters.

I have the Doyle curved diagonal cutters, and love them. I'm more a home DIYer, and I would buy more Doyle and Quinn. I like Klein and have a couple of their tools as well. What's great about the HF option is where I, and probably most of us, have more than one bag of tools: one in the truck, one in the garage, maybe one in the front of the house so we don't have to run to the garage, and in my case a light tool set at work for tearing apart cables or computers. HF gives me the option to get some inexpensive tools for all the "extra" toolbags I have around that won't get used as much.
Agreed. I’m a part time handyman--best quality tools are in my work bags. Lower quality is for around the house stuff & general DIY projects. Keeps me from having to dip into my work bags & misplace things I’ll need on a job. HF gives you the luxury of having multiple tool sets on hand without breaking the budget. If I were a full time tradesman I’d invest in higher quality gear.
The sharpe edges is for reaming conduit. Great review.

Hired a couple of guys last fall and gave them HF tools including the same Quinn tools you tested mainly to see if the guys could be responsible enough to take care of them and not lose anything. After checking them out I was impressed enough to get the sidecutters and needlenose for myself and with daily use they are working very good. Didn't linesman because I carry a pair of $60 Kliens that were a gift about 15 years ago but the Quinn linesman may replace them soon just to keep them from being stolen or lost.
All of the HF tools have performed well, except the oil filter wrench that Tate lost and expected me to replace.
I noticed you mentioned the handle flex that's the number one thing I'll look for in pliers the cheaper they are the more they'll flex
I bought that whole set of Quinn pliers to keep in my truck. I think for the price they make the most sense. I didn’t see the Doyle’s being that much better than the Quinn’s and for the price they ask, you’re right near the Channellock range which is a far better option. The Quinn line is the perfect HF upgrade. Better quality but still at a budget price. While the Doyle’s seem solid, the price is just too close to better products like Channellock to justify the purchase.
I agree the Doyles are just not nice enough to justify the price difference I would do the Quinn's and save some money and use them as beaters just like you said good comment

Best thing about HF is that you can go take a tool in for warranty and walk out the same day with another one in your hand. With Klein and Channellock, you usually have to send them back to the manufacturer.

Doyles are Unbeaten for the price and quality
I was very impressed with the Doyle side cutters. Very comparable to Klein, and half the price. Only time will tell if they hold up over time. Harbor Freight has really stepped up their game over the few years.
Indeed they have but they are a huge corporation now and so they're trying to cement their foothold
I work with tools too, actually. I’m a tig welder. I like my Klein’s I keep them at home. For work however I take the Doyle’s because they are expendable. I only use them for two tasks, cutting weld wire and removing the tungsten from my torch.

At least the Doyle know that they are named Linemen’s pliers. Unlike the Quinn who advertise them as Linesmen’s.
Doyle pliers are to me at a southwire and Milwaukee level for pliers I own Milwaukee and southwire pliers and compared the Doyle pliers to them and they are sharp as are the Milwaukee pliers and southwire pliers and similar in price unless you get them on sale at harbor freight (Doyle pliers). They are worth the money spent for the Doyle pliers. Although the Milwaukee pliers and southwire pliers may go on sale they compare well. Good video sir.
I used to have a set of workforce tools and I really liked them
I have the Doyle large slip joints. They are very similar to my Mac slip joint pliers. Not bad for $5.

Not long ago I looked at Doyles and decided to buy some Knipex pliers directly from Germany. Had to wait a while, but they're worth it (and more). I do have some Doyle pliers and they are good tools, but I must have gotten them at the intro pricing, because these days I prefer to pay a little more and get Knipex.

I have both Doyle, and Quinn and my Doyle's have no rust but the Quinn's rusted within a week. So I'd say the Steel is not as good also grabbing just a few clips off my car the Quinn's teeth got messed up while my Doyle's are still pretty good. I love my channel locks but all of them have their place I beat on the harbor freight stuff but will use Quinn's for dirty jobs and my Doyle's for cleaner stuff and channel locks for when I don't have time to screw around
Yes I agree I like having beaters as well as my premium Klein's for when I'm actually doing electrical work
I bought a set of the Quinn's for general use a while ago, I have my Klein's for whenever occasions I need them. HF pliers do tend to rust easily, I usually wipe them down with a thin layer of fluid film which helps. The Quinn's are definitely a step above the Pittsburgh pliers, and have a lifetime guarantee. I figure if I lose the Quinn's I won't cry like I would my Klein's. LoL
Super late here, but to keep tools from rusting, spray and wipe them down with WD-40 or PB Blaster and wipe it off well enough that it doesnt feel slick or oily in your hand. It leaves a super thin coat that protects the tool from rusting for a long time. I've had the Quinn Diagonal Cutters and Long Nose pliers for about 3 years now. Mine havent rusted at all.

I've also heard the Quins rust REALLY fast, that alone makes me think either Doyle or Channelock. If a tool can't even sit on the shelf for a week it's not worth buying to me, the Doyle steel seems alot better tho.
Iv got a pair of the Doyle linesmans for the price iv got no complaints. I dint want the quinns because of all the rounded edges. I use linesmans to hammer in staples and such.

Yes it looks like they're trying to revamp probably to try to make more profits because they've over-expanded and have way too many stores now
Harbor Freight is adding more stores because they're making tons of money. I work there on the side as a part time job from my career. They just had their yearly meeting where they go over all this with staff. They're bringing in the more expensive brands to draw in more of the professionals. They're keeping the lower priced stuff as well.@@CatusMaximus They're introducing a new line of toolboxes as well known as Icon (like the higher torque wrench brand they carry) that will be compared to Snap-on's higher end boxes.

As with the pliers you reviewed, they had two grades. The set I bought was a small needle nosed style.
I am serious when I say they are VERY nice. I am very impressed with the fit/finish, feel and functionality. Not to mention the price. They are sold under the "Bremen" brand name. I also own Vise Grip brand and I would buy Bremen every day. The value is superb. .Check them out next time you're at HF. All the best
Yes their new vice grips are pretty decent I may pick up some of their grip clamps
I prefer the Pittsburgh's with the cushion grips. I have the three piece set and they are perfect.

I have found that sometimes you have to sort through the Doyle pliers to get a really good one, but not often. My Linemen's pliers didn't have the sharp edge. Also, they may have cleaned them up some in the manufacturing since this video was made. I got mine this year.
all the "gripper is on the quin needle nose are good for is pinching the fire out of your fingers.

I have Doyle pliers and about 2 years using them, they are good I've not had any problems with them, I used to have the matco pliers set and the look similar to the Doyle, even the metal coloration, but these Doyle costs me way way less
I would be very interested to know where or how they come up with the nemes for the tools, Quinn and Doyle. Are these just made up names or do they have some significance regarding the tools?

I got a pair of Quinn lineman plies ... Cut thick copper wire great.
By the time you're paying $17 for lineman pliers (the price you mentioned) I think I'd go Channel or Klein for the extra $5. There is no question that Chinese stuff has vastly improved over the years, and I certainly sense that the Chinese are making a major, major push to saturate the US market for tools. There's also a place for disposable tools; for example, if you are rewiring a house with blown in insulation and crawling around in a tight space, you can drop a pair of pliers or a hammer (for driving romex staples) into that stuff and lose them very easily. Ask me how I know!
The lowest I've seen kleins at are 40 dollars and 25 for channellock, I have the Quinn linesman and even lent a pair to my uncle who's an electrical apprentice and he has been using them for 8 months and hasn't had a problem with them, he used kleins for years but he cut a live wire with his last pair and blew em out and I had my linesman on me me and lent them to him, he kept them essentially haha but he hasn't complained, he actually might buy another pair just to have a spare
Some Doyle are made in Taiwan. Cutters and Needlenose. Not the large tongue and groove. Not sure about the others. Plenty of good steel comes out of Taiwan.

I have the quinn chanel locks, linesman, needle nose, 45° needle nose, and the side cutters. 27$ for all of them. For the price, theyre awesome.

I've cut a fair amount of steel cable with my Quinn linesman pliers and the don't seem any worse for ware then when I bought them.
I think I'm sticking to my old USA made Klein.

I have a set of these doyles (linesman, dikes, and the crimpers that hes not showing here). I bought them solely based on the fact that they were very similar in construction and finish to the kleins my boss (an electrician for 40 years) had. He and i sat down and compared his kleins to my doyles. If it weren't for the logos you couldn't tell the difference between the two

Great topic. Before watching my experience has shown Quinn to be superior. Comparing long nose to slip joint so not really direct.
I bought my first pr of Quinn a few days ago. Seems ok. I cut foot snare off a pig with it, which is all I bought them for. If it holds up to cutting a lot of snaring cable I'll be impressed.
One major difference is in the joints
One uses a box joint v.s. a much weaker and simpler lap joint!

mike's random vids not really , harbor freight takes the coupons for the Doyle’s which imo are damn good quality, I got the 8inch Doyle dykes for around 10 dollars with the 25percent coupon while the channelocks are around 20
And there also good if ya know you'll be beating the snot outta them, but don't get me wrong the channellocks are for the garage box and then the Doyle's are out on the bench

Channellock dia cutter suck. They make them to hard where they chip. Never will buy again. Buy knipex
I have a couple pairs, I think they are better in some aspects than my Chanel Lock ones and about half the price, nothing beats antique players in my opinion but they aren’t insulated.
Been through 4 sets of Quinn dikes from simply snapping and chipping of the cutters and loose right at the joint. Upgraded to Doyle and have cut through zip ties to steel belted tires off rims. And bike chains to fuel line. No complaints way better than Chinese Quinn s , from experience.
HF is charging more and more nowadays, so my general rule of thumb while browsing in the store based on 20 years of shopping there is: if it's made in Taiwan, I'll probably snatch it up. Soon enough, it'll be made in China selling at the same price, but usually with poorer quality (softer steel, prone to rust, and grip loosening)
I'll never understand why people get so hung up on how pretty the tool is I just want a tool that works I have little to no concern about how pretty it is all my tools get used & abused daily but who cares I know I dont

using nice tools yields finer, faster results with less fatigue and less rework.
A better finish does more than just look pretty. Higher polished steel resists corrosion better than rougher finished steel does. It has to do with surface area in contact and contaminant trapping. I've taken pliers and polished the steel and polished they just don't rust up as much.

Quinn ftw once i think they are failing i take then back to HF for a new pair no questions asked.
I say that these pliers make a good backup for Kleins, Milwaukee, ideal, southwire, Greenlee, and like tools.
The Quinn lineman’s pliers look just like the Channellock 369s.
In my personal opinion it's like the doyle is a Snap-On knock off in the Quinn is a Blue Point knock off

I am kind of suspecting that the smoother looking finish. Is not really a part of higher quality. Bt that they tumbled a little longer in a polishing media that makes them appear A higher quality I’m not knocking HF as a whole. Bt they generally carry. Items that they can purchase. And make as much profit as possible and overall quality is not as much as a. Concern I do agree with many others that China and Taiwan do indeed. Have the technology and ability to produce a much higher grade of a product than they once did other wise thanks for the reveiw I probably would had thought that both sets were very similar by looking at them in the store at a glance

Doyle 10" cable cutter goes through old steel BX cable like butter. Too bad the diagonal cutters aren't angled.

Doyles are supposed to be sharp by design for deburring conduit... Rounded Quinns means you need to carry another tool to finish the job... Get Doyles

The issue of bad finishes on expensive tools is not just a harbor freight thing. Knipex combination pliers are mad of super high quality steel and will last a life time or two for about $25 buck. But they look like shit and lose their finish in about a month of every day use. This issue seems to go away once you enter $35 up ranger of their tools. But it is still present nun the less. Channelocks have this issue as well but not as bad. But their steel quality is lower and I don't see the lasting as long.
The dules or just rebranded mac. I have both they are identical. Ofcorse the mac are older. But good players. The mac were 4 times the price.

I don't see a reason to not get husky or kobalt hand tools. The ease of the unlimited warranty, and the fact that the tools are continually getting better, you essentially buy 1 tool and never have to buy another, provided you don't lose the thing.... or melt it.
Can you exchange husky hand tools in store? I have pliers and ratchet wrenches from them, still working well though

That is a very true and accurate statement the only time tool quality really comes in the plays when you really use them
@@CatusMaximus even being used by a professional a set of "cheap tools" come in handy, sometimes you need a sacrificial/loaner tool so the loss is not as bad.
Plus they have lifetime warranty! And maybe loosing these or dropping them in a spaces wont hurt so much like buying brand or expensive equipment. These work well for me😄
The problem With cheap Tools usted by pros is the real intensive use and most cheap Tools fail after some weeks, for domestic use are ok

Yea the doyle are nicer and the better of the 2. Like i said in another comet. These are just ilder mac pliers. I have mac pliers and the doyle and have compared them they are identical. A lot of companies do this. They take a discontinued pair slap a new brand on it and sell them. A lot of tool buying is over thinking it. You have 3 type of tools good bad and decent most you can tell by looking and feeling them.
There's still a few excellent old Brands but they just don't get their products out into the stores and most people just buy what they can see and what they can afford really nice tools are really expensive now
Purchased 4 pair of Doyle pliers yesterday assuming they were made in Taiwan. After reading the packaging, it plainly said made in China. Returning them Monday.
Quinn prices april 2018 side cutters $3.99, long nose $3.99, linesman $6.99 price increase as of july 2018 side cutters $4.99, long nose $4.99, linesman $7.49.

Yea i sparingly use the fishtape puller groove in pliers ive given myself some nasty bloody teeth with em
The groove is MUCH more secure than using the serrated area behind the pivot. I've always found it to work great, you just have to remember to squeeze.

Harbor freight never reveals their suppliers, but I believe the Quinn pliers are made be Apex, and the Doyle and made by Stanley. I may be completely wrong, but from what I can see and compare with others on the market, this is what I believe.

Not that they're as inexpensive, because it's really only their widky available Mainstays that are pretty much dirt cheap.
I agree Channellock really is competitively priced for what you're getting. After looking around on the shelf and seeing that only half the dolls or even Taiwanese I think they are less of a value than I initially did. I would do the Harbor Freight pliers as beaters or budget pliers until you can get something nicer
Waiting on a set of Wilde slip joint pliers from Wilde, straight from Kansas.
My 7" Quinn cutters have entirely different grips. HF isn't much for consistency.
I didn't notice that they have different grips that can be a bit annoying

Not everyone likes those “comfort” grip pliers so they make both types. I prefer plastic dipped pliers

Which would indicate how they're hitting a lower price point through widely varying quality control. You may get a nicer pair I may get a junkie pair the next person may get a pair that's in between
For about the same price - maybe just a tad more, buyers should just get Channel lock's = quality USA made! Lifetime warranty!
There ok but klein is the best only use the best if hf had the best I would use it. But milwaukee. Klein ideal greenlee if you're on a job I want the best to pass on to the customer.... And tools can make or break the quality look/appearance of your workmanship.
Right out of the gate those Quinn needle nose and alternative lifestyle cutters the handles on those I hate and would not get those never had a pair but similar tools with that handle style I cannot stand

I lose too many tools so I buy that quinn shit..if you cut with the tip of the cutters they will break off so the steal isn't that great but other than that..they get the job done
I'm cheap as hell and won't waste my money on Harbor Freight tools like this. If cost is the issue pick up a used name brand from any yard sale, pawn shop or classifieds for literately pennies on the dollar. Harbor Freight is great for something you are going to use once or twice over 10 years, it saves you $100 over name brand and then you throw the tool away when it breaks.
