Honestly, I love Harbor Freight tools, I’ve been in the industrial and automotive fields for 10+ years and I don’t mind one bit having a tool box full of HF tools. They get the job done quite well.

My suggestion on the black impact sockets you showed is to use nail polish and paint the area where the size of the socket is marked. Allow it to dry and then get a rag with acetone and wipe the area you painted. It will remove the nail polish on the top surface, but the polish that went into the recessed area of the marking of the size will still be there highlighting the numbers of the socket size. Now you will have sockets that are easier to read.

Well we have been brainwashed to believe that we need to jump on a tool truck as soon as we become a tech, and put ourselves in debt for life, for the exact same tools that are sold under numerous other brands for 1/10th the price! It's sad because these young guys feel peer pressure to have the "cool tools", instead of worrying about being a better tech. Tbh some of the worst techs/master techs I've ever experienced in my 40 years, were the guys obsessed with their tool truck brands and had the big shiny tool boxes! I may own Snap-On/Matco now, but I rarely buy those brands anymore ever! I recently built out a road box for my campervan and guess what kind of ratchets are in it... Capri and Craftsman, and ill put them against anything you bring to the table! It's many times more about the hands that work the tools, not necessarily the tools themselves.

I think he outlined everything honestly, and accurately. For his application what he has, and uses is adequate.
Style has a lot to do with a tools longevity. I work with some guys that are ever so ginger, and methodical in every movement.. Not rough on the equipment.. Other guys are bulls in a china shop. They get the job done.. They just have a pile of broken tools at the end.. Regardless of brand.. You don’t use a ratchet to do breaker bar stuff, and you don’t use 1/4” stuff to do 1/2” stuff.. It saves your tools, and it saves your hands!!

Great video! Thanks for sharing all your first hand experiences. My experience with H.F. tools has been mostly positive, and I use them for everything from household use to working on my fleet of 85 buses and fire trucks. I need sockets up to 2 1/2", I got a set with 10 sockets, huge ratchet with two extensions and a case for $40 bucks,..incredible price. But I did bend the breaker bar with some real heavy use. p.s. AVOID the multi colored, double box end ratcheting wrenches that have ANY plastic, you can see it if you look closely, they simply fall apart. The ratcheting wrenches that are shown here (box and open end) are far superior. Their black impact sockets are dynamite, I use them mostly with an air gun with no problems. And yes, they are hard to read. I've also used their regular chrome sockets with an air gun, no problems in many, many years of use.

If you're unhappy with the welds on the leveler, stop by a welding shop or even an exhaust shop and bring the part in already wire brushed down to bare metal. They can knock that out in a few seconds maybe for a few bucks. It looks like it would be a pretty stout leveler and I'd find a way to adapt an impact to crank it.

Actually most levelers do not work very well when full engine weight is on them. Most are designed for adjustment with weight off, lift and check, then adjust more as necessary.
In our shop we've always found that it took more effort to use the leveler than to use a long chain and just move the hook on the chain. Sometimes you might need to use a bolt and nut through a couple of links to create an eyelet from the chain, or to act as a stop pin so the chain doesn't slip on the hook if you are pulling from a steep angle.

All of the folding cranes are pretty much designed to put the weight on the outside wheels. This keeps the unit stable under load. You should never change the hole layout for your convenience. Use a pry bar.

These are the HF tools I’ve purchased in two categories. Good and bad:
The good: metric and standard combo wrenches, spark plug boot and hose removal pliers, 1/2” breaker bar, 1/2” click type torque wrench, belt sander and sanding belts, ratchet and socket sets: 3/8”, 1/2” drive metric and standard deep well and regular. Impact deep well sockets.
The bad: 1/4” ratchet and sockets, 32 piece screw driver set in hard black case- red plastic handles. (Threw them away)
The screw drivers broke during normal use and were spinning in the handle. That was when I was working on my Mercedes rear door lubricating and cleaning the window regulator and frame, the vacuum locks (power locks), and door hinges.
The 1/4” drive ratchet: in all fairness I probably should have been using a larger size but the snap ring pops out and the gear falls out when you use it on very tight bolts. I just pop it back in place. Sometimes you don’t feel like digging out another tool lol.
I have other tools that were given to me but I haven’t used them yet. Air conditioning pumps, pullers, compression tester, etc. I’m a classic Mercedes enthusiast with two classic MB cars. Worked on cars as a hobby 25 years, Benz- 6 years.

lots of people in the comments are bashing cheap tools, well, i renovated an entire house and I probably spent about $400 on tools, (because I already owned the rest of the tools i needed) and about $5000 on materials (wood flooring paint and trim for 5 rooms). In the end I saved myself over $30000 in labor costs and made over 60k when I sold the house. The tools I used are still in perfect condition and I could literally do 100 more renovations and still be able to use the same tools. If any of the tools broke and needed to be replaced, I could buy multiple replacements and still pay less than say... a Dewalt drill, which is not much better, and yes I owned several as well as several cheaper drills and both performed the same. That said, I have also bought some Dewalt when on sale or searching Craigslist .....such as a brand new planer (the owner used it once and sold it to me for $250... 250 for a $700 dollar planer!! and he even made a base and included it. People who are brand snobs are just stupid, spending their money on name and not so much on quality. ( a lot of different tool brands are made in the same factory in China, they just change the casing color so Ryobi, Dewalt, Bosch, Black and Decker, Chicago Electric and some others) yes there are some variables but now they are less and less since it's cheaper to make the same parts there are not that different from one brand to another so why pay more so that your friends don't make fun of you for not having name brand tools? what are you in high school?

This old man has a complete set of Pittsburg (Forge) ratchets in 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" drives. I bought them over 30 years ago when Harbor Freight was Harbor Freight Salvage and they actually came to our local area (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and set up several tents to sell tools. I've been a customer ever since and own a home shop full of their tools. Do your homework and read the reviews before you buy and you won't be disappointed.

Regarding the engine hoist, you said that when lowering the leg for use it was a problem lining up those holes to insert the pin in the operational mode. This is not correct. Those hole don't line up for a reason. The caster wheels under the pivot point are not designed to support the weight of whatever the hoist is lifting. It is rated at a ton, those wheels are not. You have to raise the wheels off the ground when using the boom to avoid damaging the casters. Put a pry bar under the frame to lift and you won't hurt your back.

Yeah, they qualify good, they can get the job done for entry level jobs. Just not the highest quality control, not the tightest tolerances, and not always the best option for the job.
They do work, and as long as they are functional they shouldn't be knocked for it, but some times certain jobs requires certain tools. My $40 multimeter works perfectly fine for what I need, but as a engineer my job mandates a more accurate unit which runs $600.

I don't understand why people that hate Harbor Freight click on these videos and put their nasty rude comments I have purchased tools from Harbor Freight for years yes they have some junk tools down there but they also have lots of good tools . Most of time before I purchase a tool from Harbor Freight I will read the reviews online. If you are a d.i.y then most of Harbor Freight's tools are right up your alley. If you turn wrenches professionally then you depend on that tool to make your living with then the tool truck tools will most likely be your choice of tools. I have been working on cars for over 15 years and I have a little bit of everything in my toolbox . Harbor Freight Tools have come a long way from what they used to be in fact I would say they're not as good as quality as Craftsman if not better.

The engine hoist should have had the castor adjusted with a few spacing washers the day he put it together. Twelve point sockets are never recommended they will round off nuts that have rusted. What is an engine level tool one or two long studs will guide an engine onto a stand or gear box. Tools are made to serve a purpose if you only get them out to do a short service every few months then cheap is the way to go, if you use them every day then buy the best you can afford and look after them

It worked. 2:18 That's a "feature" on my 2 ton "higher end" folding engine hoist as well. My recent alternator video has a review of the same breaker bar. no, they are only good if you are doing light to maybe medium work. Snap on might seem over priced, but snap on wont break or give you problems when the job is hard.
I still to this day dont understand why people are having this argument, the cheap tools will work fine on lighter duty jobs, but if you push cheap tools they break every time way before good tools. But if you dont need anything heavy duty and dont want to spend alot of money cheap tools are fine.
