    I like that the icon brand exists, you can get snap-on style tools at a fraction of the price. And a lot of harbor freight’s tools are good store brand tools, for people looking to find the new sears craftsman. And the icon 3/8 drive flex head ratchet with the “grip” seems slightly better than a similar snap-on (that I got at a tag sale)

      A lot of knock-off copies are built to inferior quality. These icons are built to arguably equal quality. I have both and I'm impressed with the Icons. I like the tackiness of the SO grips better, but the icon grips are still really good.

    As long as Snap-On's patent has not been infringed, if there even was one on the Snap-On dykes. Then Harbor Freight having the Icon dykes manufactured the same or almost the same as the Snap-On's is not a problem. Snap-On's patents on most of their tools have expired. This is why so many of the available tools from many different manufacturers have the same designs and features found on Snap-On tools. You can buy almost any socket or ratchet from any brand and it will have most if not all of the once-touted features you could only get from Snap-On. Snap-On's design that still stands out is its very tight tolerance specifications. A Snap-On socket for example will fit much tighter on a bolt or nut than most of the other brands of sockets. Sometimes this is by a thousandth or two sometimes it's only by a few ten-thousandths of an inch or millimeter. Most of the time this won't matter, sometimes it may even be an advantage, and the off-brand sockets will work just as well as the Snap-On.

      The Snap On design for ratchets is ubiquitous. The majority of those inexpensive ratchets in tool kits from the Far East are Snap On knock offs.

    It's almost as if people aren't aware that the tools aren't necessity better and that they are just prepaying for on-site warranty. Many tools have lifetime warranty, but you have to bring the original receipt into the store to make the exchange, so it's potentially less convenient. Although it's not like the tool truck is sitting on the back corner of the property just waiting for your tool to break so they can instantaneously swoop in and make you feel better about breaking a tool. If you break a tool while on a job, then you will have to wait for the truck to show up.

    • @johnfaustus1
      @johnfaustus1 Рік тому

      Please don't talk out your ass (and get your spelling correct, it's chromoly). Snap-on _rarely_ uses chromium-molybdenum (which is usually used only on things like racing bicycle frames anyway). This particular tool doesn't use Cr-Mo (whether its 4140 or 4340) - it's simply 'cold forged steel alloy' without a qualifier; if I could examine it, I could guess at its SAE mettelurgy. If it was Cr-Mo or Cr-V, you can bet Snap-On would have made a big stink about it on their advertising/specs.

    I think when it comes down to it, professionals can get away with using icon for pliers because they tend to last a very long time. A pair of cheap chinese slip pliers can last 20+ years.However, when it comes to cutting tools, the steel needs to be good in order to last. Therefore, i would not recommend icon for diagnol cuttters, or flush cut, scissors, or sheet metal cutters, or anything else that requires a edge to cut.
