    Suggestion: Even though the little tears are not getting bigger, you may want to get some "Tenacious Tape" and cover them up. That will help them *not* grow, restore water resistance, and prevent accidentally snagging the little hole on anything.

    Lifetime warranty worked well for me, I got my osprey nebula in 2016 and in 2023 (exactly 7 years later) I bring it to official distributor in Jakarta, Indonesia. They wrote down what need to be fixed, and after a month I got it back repaired, they changed whole back of it, shoulder straps, top handle, front mesh and main zip, some parts looks abit different than before e.g. main zip become black but it is same strong as before and it was absolutely free. I'm still using it now almost every day, overall very happy with nebula, I love many compartments, orange color inside, proper laptop pocket, and overall it's good size for dauly use and few days trips

    I’m 5’7” woman traveling with the s/m model. Works well but be aware that when it’s fully packed, it will not fit into smaller regional airplane overheads, so gate checking is needed.

    Not sure if it has been commented yet, but the new models of Farpoints and Porters moved the laptop to the back of the bag, which is lockable, now the bag is more balanced and the risk of breaking the lap top is reduced. the only down side is that the front pocket is not longer lockable, so if you have to say check in the bag, you can't put anything in that pocket as it can be open easily. The main pocket still lockable.

    I think a lot of people don't understand the purpose of a travel backpack. I brought my Farpoint 40 through SEA and hoped from hostel to hostel. My friends just brought hiking backpacks. When moving between hostels, my friends would have to unload everything to find what they needed while I just had to open my pack and just pick out what I needed and close it up. It was so easy for me because I didn't have to unload everything. I also flew a couple of times during my trip and am glad that I don't have to be concerned about checking in my bag. I really don't want to push the limit and have my pack go through check-in. I worked for the airline before and I know how workers move your bag without regard to breaking the contents inside the luggage.
    I got the S/M size. It feels like I have a 35L rather than a 38L or a 40L. 35L was just enough and I had room to spare throughout my trip. I didn't carry anything valuable (ie laptop) and I didn't buy any souvenirs. If I did find something worth buying and it didn't fit in my bag, then I would ship it home. Yes its pricey, but I am not going to lug anything around throughout my trip because it can become troublesome/annoying real quick.
    Sometime within the next year I will try to take my Farpoint 40L hiking and overnight camp. I will have to buy lightweight gear. If it works out, then I'll try 3-4 day treks. The front two pouches can be used for hiking sticks or tent stakes. I don't think my 40L is big enough for long treks, but I'll try to make it work.

    Great video! I love this bag. I bicycle commute and I use this bag everyday. I find I can easily carry tools, extra clothes, food, water, sunscreen and then I still have plenty of room for anything else my day calls for. It’s very comfortable even when fully packed. I also recommend the packing cubes as it just makes finding things easier.

    To improve the water resistance of mine M/L size I use Nikwax Solar Waterproof spray on it, which makes it waterproof, hopefully. - I also have what is called a small rain cover (I think it is called), which is large enough to place the M/L into, and other things into the rain cover bag. Do not buy the medium/large rain cover because the strap will probably be too long. I'm about 6' tall. Best to test before buying. Once purchase the correct size the next thing to do is master adjusting; shoulder, chest and waist straps to balance the load perfectly to weigh less.

    Just a tip, be sure to measure your torso. I almost bought a S/M because it mentioned that’s what the 5’7” person had in this video (I’m also 5’7”). But I measured my torso and I’m well into the M/L. Look up the Osprey bag size chart and instructions on how to measure your torso.

    Great review. I would point out that having the laptop on the outside (front) part of the backpack can be better for the laptop than if it is in a sleeve directly between your back and the fully loaded/weighted backpack. If your pack is fully loaded, any time you are leaning even slightly forward, some of that weight is pressing forward against the laptop. The larger the laptop (such as a 15" vs a 12 or 13", the more flex the case and screen will have. At minimum, you'll end up with key cap oil (from fingers) leaving squares on your screen; at worst, you can bend the laptop itself. So I prefer the less than ideal weight distribution of having the laptop on an outside sleeve.

      @@PackHacker I'm considering it, but right now I use a Pacsafe Vibe 40, but it has one major flaw (aside from not enough organization pockets) - its shoulder straps cannot be shortened enough for shorter people (I'm 5'7"), so it becomes uncomfortable when heavily loaded as it sits too far down the back. www.pacsafe.com/vibe-40-anti-theft-40l-carry-on-backpack/60310100.html?cgid=carry-on-backpacks#start=1

      @@PackHacker I have now used the Farpoint for several multi-week one-bag trips, and it's pretty good. I wish it had more small pockets, especially on the exterior; that one big top pocket ends up just full of all my immediate need crap, and it's a hassle to find what I need in the dark. Also, I wish the hip straps were vertically adjustable and removable. With the rest of the bag and shoulder straps fitted nicely for me, even with my short torso (5'7" tall body, longer legs and slightly shorter torso) I find that the hip straps are too high. If I use them to bind the weight (and save my shoulders), they actually are above my hips and squeezing my soft middle. So I can't use them. I'm even considering carefully cuttin them off...

  • @33Jenesis
    @33Jenesis 5 років тому +2

    Strap cover is great, no need for a backpack duffel when I checked it (bought port wine once). My absolute fave feature is the compression straps. I sit on my bag to tighten the strap to shrink the profile by half to be more carryon friendly when the gate agents eye my bag. Other than it not being able to stand up when put down on the floor, I have no complaint after using it for long travel in the last 3 years.

    This looks like a great pack. I’m using an osprey kestrel 48L backpack, it’s top loading. It’s a bit bothersome having to dig through my stuff and clothes even with packing cubes. I kinda like how you can open the zippers in the Farpoint and have access right away to your clothes she stuff. In the future I will definitely look into the Farpoint or porter series. But maybe more towards the Farpoint coz I want something I can trek with to Nepal

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 років тому

      Hey Lost Under the Sky - thanks for sharing your experience with us! The clamshell design on the main compartment is super handy for giving you access to all of your items at once and it works even better if you use packing cubes. Packing cubes can also help you with a top-loading pack too as some have quick grab handles and you can get them in all different colors. Thanks for the great review and info! We ended up opting for the Porter 30L instead of the Farpoint 40L. We purchased both, packed/unpacked each and found that we could "just about" fit as much in the Porter. We think it's partially because of the laptop placement. The Porter puts the placement along your back, versus the Farpoint which has it in the flap part. Once the laptop was in the flap, we felt that it limited how much could fit due to the more dome shape of the Farpoint...versus the rectangular shape of the Porter.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 років тому +1

      Hey Kobayashi360 - we've found that the access to the water bottle compartment really depends on how packed out the bag is and what size water bottle you're using. But due to the elasticated pockets, this does mean that most of the time you can fit a smaller water bottle in here. Hope this helps! 👍

    I'm trying to decide between the Farpoint 36L wheeled and the Osprey 36L wheeled Daylite. The Farpoint has the better backpack system but a T handle for wheeling. The Daylite has the blue sign recycled material build, stand horseshoe handle to fit luggage pass through but has detachable backpack straps and no backpack support system. The non wheeled bags are all reviewed here but don't cover the aspects that I'm trying to decide between. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

      @@PackHacker There's a new version of the Farpoint/Fairview 40. It was released this fall. The look has been updated, though only slightly. The big changes are: an adjustable strap system that makes it one-size-fits-all, the laptop compartment has been moved to sit flush against the back with a dedicated zipper opening, and the two mesh outside pockets have been replaced with a single pocket.

    Hi, I really love your review which was very clear and informative. I wonder what your view is about carrying this pack for any length of time. I appreciate that this is mainly designed to be a carry on bag with some short distance carry (through city commute) capability but I would like to ask if it could also be used comfortably as a day pack once you've arrived at your destination. eg most luggage in a suitcase and this pack as a secondary carry on with usage for days out.

    Hi Team, I am trying to source one of these backpacks, however since the system has been around a few years, I am having great difficulty, not on Amazon or our other sites that would normally stock camping and backpacking luggage,
    Is their a comparable back pack that is very very very similar to the Osprey Farpoint 40L M/L, that hides the yoke strap system, and is also a solid system and can be popped in a cabin overhead storage,
    If you accept this challenge then this will be your new mission,
    And this message will self destruct once read.

    I thought Osprey's guarantee was for the lifetime of the customer, not the bag. Their website says they'll replace anything they can't repair, even if you bought it in the 1970s.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  6 років тому

      Hey Wibotta Zu- Osprey does offer what they call an ‘All Mighty Guarantee'. Sounds great at first read, “Should you find any defect in the way your pack has been built we will repair or replace it without any charge, within its reasonable lifetime.” The phrase ‘reasonable lifetime’ is where you may come into an issue. Check out our full written review to learn more about this! packhacker.com/travel-gear/osprey/farpoint-40/

    • @WibottaZu
      @WibottaZu 6 років тому +1

      That sounds pretty different from what's on the actual Osprey website: www.osprey.com/ca/en/customer-support/all-mighty-guarantee
      "Osprey will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge - whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday. If we are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, we will happily replace it."
      It would be good to clear up the confusion because that guarantee is a big part of why I'm considering this bag!

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  6 років тому

      In our written review we go into further detail on this- we were a bit confused at first too but did some digging! Osprey cleared up the phrase "reasonable lifetime" in one of their responses to a customer's review on their website by saying:
      “What this means is that a pack that gets used every day such as the Quasar (similar to the Farpoint) is going to wear quicker than a pack that is only used once a year. Each of our guarantee cases is looked at individually so that the utilization of the pack can be evaluated to see that the pack has had its reasonable lifetime. Hence wear and tear is not covered by our guarantee, as well as malicious and accidental damage.”
      We’re still not clear on just how long they consider the ‘reasonable lifetime’ to be on the Farpoint Osprey, but it may not be as long as you think.

    • @WibottaZu
      @WibottaZu 6 років тому

      I mean the only place I've seen that term, "reasonable lifetime" is in your review, while their website sounds a lot more open-ended with the guarantee. Probably worth our while to contact the company to get details on the guarantee in our respective countries before we purchase.

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  6 років тому

      This is the information we've uncovered, Wibotta. Companies will sometimes promise grandiose warranties only to give you trouble when the time comes for repair. What we've said above, and in our written review, reflects that.

    @joehodgson2815 6 років тому +2

    Possibly a weird question, but have you ever really used the waist straps on these?
    I've been traveling since the early 1990s, and the only times I've used waist straps is when I've massively overpacked and I needed to spread the weight.
    I'm into one-bag trips now, and my usual maximum pack weight is around 7 kilograms.
    When you use waist straps, they're instantly sweaty, and when you don't they stick out bashing everyone to your sides and generally getting in the way.
    I just got this pack, and while all the straps tuck away neatly, when you've got them exposed these things are huge (and quite bulky when covered).
    So I'm thinking about performing radical surgery on my shiny new Farpoint 40 and cutting them off, just leaving the shoulder straps.
    Any thoughts?

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  6 років тому

      Hey Joe!
      We've had team members use the waist strap / hip belt on the Osprey Farpoint 40 before. It can be nice if you're hauling around a ton of heavy gear for long distances, but for short carry and lighter loads, it certainly isn't necessary.
      7 kilo is a great weight for carry! Congrats on getting it that low - most folks don't.
      The hip belt is definitely hard to store. We've reviewed a couple other packs with removable and hide-able hip belts and it's a bummer Osprey doesn't include this as an option. Even using the classic "buckle the hip belt and tighen it behind the back trick" doesn't work well with these bulky straps. It sticks into your back.
      Good luck if you perform the radical surgery! Be careful not to cut into the bag and safety first!

    • @joehodgson2815
      @joehodgson2815 6 років тому +2

      Thank you for your answer (I have to admit that once I'd posted my question in actual words, it did sound like a rather odd thing to be doing!)
      To clarify, 7kg is only something I can manage in hot countries, but that's also where a lighter weight really makes life easier; a multi-climate trip would definitely be heavier.
      I'll definitely be getting someone else to do the cutting and sewing: either my local hiking store or my leather-worker friend - people with heavy-duty cutting tools who know how to stitch up and seal the resulting cut-off bits properly (and without losing a finger in the process!)
      Anyway, thanks again for your reply and keep up the excellent work with the videos :)

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  6 років тому +1

      It's not that odd! Customizing a bag to personal needs is great.
      Makes sense with the 7kg in hot countries.
      Good luck with the project and thanks for being a part of the Pack Hacker community Joe! Let use know when your Farpoint is all modified. We'd love to see a photo :)

    • @BernieandIvey
      @BernieandIvey 6 років тому +3

      It's easy to tell actually. If the inside color is yellow or neon green regardless of the exterior color, it's a 40L one (m/l version). If the inside is grey it's the s/m one. I know this because I've compared both sizes extensively when researching for the best travel bag that will suit my needs. If you look closely, the girl's bag has the grey interior color whereas the guy's bag has a yellow or neon green interior (40L, m/l version). I have the volcanic grey (exterior color, m/l version) which has the color yellow or neon green interior. :)

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 років тому +2

      Hey Racheal - it depends on a few different factors, such as whether your packing cubes are packed to full capacity, how full the front compartment is and what packing cubes you use. If your packing cubes are the right depth and you're not planning on using the front compartment, it may be possible to stack the cubes, but from our experience and to get the best use out of this pack and all the compartments, just having a single layer of packing cubes works best. Hope this helps! 😊👍

    • @kathydent2116
      @kathydent2116 Рік тому +1

      This kind of backpack is absolutely not for school. (40 litres is a lot of space.) It's for travel and is designed to carry mostly rolled up clothes in the main compartment. I graduated from a top-loading backpack to one similar to this when I was doing some long-distance travel many years ago and the great benefit of it is that you can live out of it without having to unpack and re-pack it every time you do an overnight stay. The point of the zip-around is that you can pack it like a drawer. When you open it, you can see everything that's in there and just pull out what you need and then push it back in when you're done. With a top-loader, you spend all your time unpacking and repacking, you can never find what you want and it soon gets chaotic down there in the darkness.

    Hi, was wondering if it is the best bag you recommend atm in the range of 40 litre size?

      Hey Eyal, using out sorting feature, you can not sort the packs we've had our hands on by rating and by capacity. We'll drop the links below.

    Is this compatible with the Daylite Series just like the 55 litre version is?

    Thanks for the awesome review! I'm a 5'8" guy, and I'm thinking about using this bag as a secondary backpack rather than a main bag. I intend to pack my electronics & valuables (I have a lot of these) in it & carry it onboard.
    I'll be wearing a larger backpack on my back, probably the Farpoint 70. Do you think I can comfortably wear this one, the Farpoint 40, on my chest while wearing the Farpoint 70 on my back? Neither one of them will be fully packed.

      Hey AJ! We typically recommend for folks to try stay around 40L if possible, but we realize not everyone needs to carry the same amount of stuff.
      It'd be best to test and see for yourself if it works! That 40L on the front may get a little large in height & heavy - so that's something to consider.
      Best of luck!

      Unfortunately, where I live, we don't have a shop where I can try out the Farpoint 40, or a similarly-sized backpack, otherwise I would've tried it on.
      In general though, I absolutely agree with you! I'd love to be able to stick to one 40L backpack for everything, but in my case that’s not possible. Come this summer, I'll be traveling full-time with the following set of electronics:
      - 15" MacBook Pro
      - 10.5" iPad Pro
      - 3 portable USB-C monitors
      - Sony a7R III + 2 lenses
      - Sony DSC-RX100 V
      - DJI Mavic Air
      - GoPro HERO6
      - Beats Studio3 Wireless Headphones
      - 2-3 Travel Organizers (this model: goo.gl/eLZ643) from Bagsmart full of other small devices, cables, adapters, chargers, a power bank & accessories for everything I mentioned above.
      I'm aiming to fit all of these in a carry on since I don't wish to check in my valuables. I realize the Farpoint 40 might be large enough for all of them but like you said, wearing it on the front (while wearing the Farpoint 70 on my back) might get a bit too uncomfortable.
      An alternative idea that I thought of is to divide everything I mentioned above between my 26L backpack and the 13L daypack (that comes with the Farpoint 70), and wear the latter on the front since it's much more manageable. I believe airlines allow me to carry both with me onboard.
      Thoughts on this?

      That's a ton of gear AJ - all that certainly won't fit into 40L as you pointed out! Sounds like an epic trip, too.
      We can't guarantee all of that will fit in the configuration you mentioned or not, but we'll point out a couple more things that may help:
      You could try the "Small/Medium" version of the Farpoint 40 which is a little less "height" than the "Medium/Large" version. This may be a little better for front carry.
      Dividing your gear into 2 bags is always great for flight - 1 larger bag up in the bin above and the smaller one under your seat with in-flight items (if that division works with the gear you've got). A handy tool is www.carryonbagsizes.com/ to check weights and dimensions of packs across airlines (if you haven't seen this already). Most airlines do allow you to carry-on one bag, plus a "personal item". The 13L daypack probably qualifies as a "personal item" but every airline varies.
      Have you considered the Peak Design Everyday Backpack? It's smaller in capacity than the Farpoint 40 but does wonders for organizing camera gear: packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/everyday-backpack-30l/ - no guarantee everything you mention will fit inside though.
      Have fun on your adventure and let us know what you end up going with!

      Pack Hacker Thank you so much for all this valuable info! I’ll check out your review of the Peak Design Everyday Backpack as well! I believe the 2 backpack solution (26L + 13L) will be enough for all my electronics, but I’ll keep you posted on what I end up doing. Thanks again!
