I just got this bag and loving it more and more for each day. I am amazed by how much you can stack on top of eachother and still close the lid. the internal compression straps are amazing for that. They also keep everything from falling out when you open the bag. Its also very comfy for its lightweight construction. Another hack I found with this bag is that you are able to fit a smaller packing cube under the harness, where the harness cover hides away. packing this up with a small cube or a pair of pants fills out the bag even more and makes it more comfy, as it gives a little extra support around the tailbone. The only drawbacks I could think of: 1. Would be nice with a real elastic mesh pockets one one side at least. There is a perfect place for that on one side that is now just empty. 2. Some more organization would be nice, either inside the bag on the side (as earlier versions of the Farpoint had), or a little extra room/organization in the top pocket.
I bought the first generation Farpoint 40 back in 2012. In my opinion, it has been the best carry-on backpack with top-tier function and style. Glad to see these evolvements all along the way, like the modified back support and moving the laptop compartment from the front to the back. I'm thinking about replacing mine with the newest version but it just doesn't break.

I found and ordered the previous version of this bag, it was on sale probably bc of the release of the new bag. I like the older one better bc it has the zippered pocket in the front for easy access instead of having everything in the same compartment.
It's so nice to have actual pockets!! I've been a chrome fan/collector for a while but their quality isn't very good anymore compared to a decade ago. Also their pockets suck!. This will be my daily bag for sure!!
Great review. While I appreciate the fact that the laptop compartment moved to the back I don't like that almost nothing is accessible without opening the main compartment. The previous version had a front compartment for some items. Other brands offer access from the outside and many other small pockets for organization. I suppose they assume one would use one of their daypacks. Those, I think, are interesting, but when travelling by plane it is not always allowed to take two items as carry-on. Plus the rucksack becomes quite bulky when the daypack is attached, which is a downside when being in a packed crowd as it is often the case when travelling.
Picked this up last week. Its my second Osprey Farpoint. I also have a 70l, which is to big most of the time. I really like the laptop compartment, and the redesign of the front of the bag. Taking it to India in three weeks!
Great video- I’m a huge fan of Osprey packs, and mainly this pack. I have the older version, and may actually like it better than this updated version. I don’t travel with a laptop and really like the front zippered compartment for things like a jacket and rain gear- without having to access the main compartment. I suppose if you travel with a laptop this is probably better. I do like the way the main compartment on the updated version opens all the way, as opposed to the older one that doesn’t quite do that. But props to Osprey for listening to their customers and updating to what they want!!
Mine that arrived today only has 1 zip on the laptop compartment. Is this a factory fault? Did I get a faulty product? It has the big stash pocket on front so it is the newer version..
I can see why Osprey may have used an front pocket for a tablet and laptop in their older design. With the current updated design the more conservative laptop compartment may be resting against the back and is more logical for weight distribution. But the older design allowed to grab a tablet quick in the front or top pocket when lied down flat on its back. I picked up the 55. I’m pretty happy with it so far from test packing it, but haven’t had the chance to do a big trip yet. I was kinda disappointed with the day pack at first, but tried to use it daily for a bit to see if I liked it and was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. Just my 2 cents
@@matt6740 I appreciate your input a lot! I haven’t seen too many videos that just show the day pack that comes with it. Is it bulky when it’s attached to the back of the bag? Maybe when it’s fully packed out you would have to wear the day pack the front. Thanks for your 2 cents.
They're very similar. The 55 doesn't have the front stuff pocket and has a few internal organisation pockets. My view is that you're better off getting the 40 and then if you feel you need the extra room you can add a day pack later. But there might be a few features you want on the 50. Personally I don't understand why they didn't just combine them and offer it as a 40+15. There are some decent comparisons on UA-cam showing both
Osprey's Farpoint 40 is probably hands down best carry-on bag as i have used it all around the world in the past 3-4 years and it's been amazing. Except one main issue i've had with it which you can see in the beginning of this video. At 0:15 if you look at Eric who is just a bit taller than myself, you notice how high the bag sits and hurts your lower bag imo. Especially when riding in the back of a motorcycle as you do in SE Asia for example. Other than that, this bag is near perfect!
For this bag and the Porter, it helps to have packing strategy where you load and cinch in layers. As many may have noticed, the top of his bag was not packed as dense as the bottom. These bags fail carry-on limits because owners pack it too high which may result in problems getting the bag in the overhead compartments of planes.
& the new 2022 version is missing the capability to carry using clip on single shoulder/or crossbody type strap. The strap attachment rings (one ring at side top & one at bottom) are NOT on the 2022 version.
Bought one of these for my son and it's the perfect travel pack. When to buy one for myself and was very disappointed to learn they have been discontinued.
Thanks for the great review! Couple questions: (1) Did you have issues keeping the zippered flap that covers the harness securely stored away when carrying it? Saw someone on reddit claim it comes loose. (2) Does the laptop sleeve have any sort of false bottom? It seems like it wouldn't if the laptop is only separated from main compartment by detachable padding?
For most airlines, I think the 40L is the largest that will consistently qualify as a carry-on/cabin bag. Domestic US airlines are probably the exception as many of our carriers let people fly with some larger carry-ons.
@@cynamayavlogs I decided to get the 40L one anyway. I'd rather not worry than worrying every trip about whether or not the airline is going to mess with my backpack. 6 liters won't make that much of a difference.
This thing looks to be exactly what I’m looking for on many levels. The question I have is, does it have a luggage pass through? I see the straps on the front… would these do the job? It is a travel backpack so I’m assuming it would have luggage pass throughs? Thanks for your insight!
This bag IS the luggage, thus it does not have a way to attach to other luggage. You would use it instead of a traditional carry on. It’s too large to pass as a personal item.
I noticed your bag has lockable zippers for the laptop sleeve. I was at REI and noticed the current version has 1 zipper pull, and a fabric loop at the top, so it no longer locks (you could using the fabric, but certainly not the same). Is that a dumb move by Osprey?
Could you answer or recall with the laptop compartment if there is a gap between the bottom of the compartment and the bottom of the bag ( i.e the laptop sits suspended )
Great review! HOWEVER, does the laptop compartment have TWO or just ONE zipper? The video show two, which is great but the ones I have seen in the store have only one. Is this some kind of special version? Would greatly appreciate a clarification on this matter as I am about to buy one but it all depends on if I can find the one with the double laptop zippers. Thanks!
Thank you for this informative video, I bought the original Farpoint 40 in 2019 and I realised how much of a bargain it is in price now. Have used it on several overseas trips and it hasn't broken on me once, and I'm reassured by it's lifetime guarantee. Awesome stuff.
@@markhurlock3891 no. It's not removable but there are two little hooks that can hold it in place to the rest of the backpack. Think of it like a flap that you can hold in place or not. I kept the little hooks secured the whole time. My clothes and stuff went on top.
@@panosgrdev I would say that this should not deter you from buying this great backpacking. I had many clothes in the front compartment and there was a substantial amount of pressure on my laptop. Nothing happened to it after my two month trip. Not a scratch. I think you should be fine but it's never recommended for your heavy things to go on top of your bag.
Hey I’m currently between this one or a more hiking style back pack mainly because I think they are way more comfortable but I’m wondering how comfortable was that system carrying it around ?
@@ricoko9119 funnily enough, I actually actively avoided any bags that were like super super mountain climber, hike-y looking. This bag is a little more low-key but doesn't sacrifice space. There's adjustments all over the bag, some of which I don't even know what they do because I'm a not a backpack expert haha. But the waist strap is strong and snug, the chest strap is fine too. I feel like If I ever experienced any discomfort with the bag on, it's because I didn't know how to adjust it properly to my body
i was checking this out the other day and the guy in the store couldn't tell what the toggles were for also. It was a really nice bag but not sure i'm converted yet to having such a hike/outdoorsy-looking backpack strap system.
Hello there! Your video was useful! Thanks a lot! Is this allowed in the UK/Europe as one small cabin bag on flights such as Ryanair/Easyjet? Any idea?
They have specific measurements for carry on with Ryan Air and Easy Jet, and this bag is definitely over it a lot. They don’t always check, but if they do then they’ll make you pay.
I usually pack a 26l bag with room left over for long travels but am looking for a bigger ont that compresses well incase I buy things along the way. If I get this and only fill it around half way more or less, can it be compressed down enough to where things stay in place inside? Giving me the extra room if I need it later on
I am 152 cm with short torso so looking for a backpack with adjustable harness system! I am torn though between this one with fairview 40L. I just want to have it safe for all flight, but have a little bit bigger size is also nice for more space :(
The old farpoint 40 is s/m size too. there is farview too. (created for women). And is made for people who are not tall. I had hard time to found it because is out of stock everywhere. I ordered it 4 days ago, from Estonia, now can't wait to have it. For a smaller backpack i prefer osprey daylite 26+6.
Please inform people that the warranty is really different in Europe compared with the "all mighty guarantee" warranty in the US.. Even your website didn't mention this. I almost bought this bag before I made sure to double check this..

I plan to travel to Nepal for 2.5 weeks and then to Greece for 2 weeks. Can I use the Farpoint 40 on a 9 day trek in Nepal. Each day I will be staying in homestays/lodges everyday. I'm curious if it will be comfortable enough to handle more than 6 hours of trekking each day. I would get a proper hiking bag but since I am traveling to Greece after I wanted a bag to be able to handle both trips and it seems the Farpoint 40L fits the criteria but I'm not sure about how comfortable it will be for 6+ hours of multi day treks in Nepal. Any suggestions or other bag recommendations will be a great help.
what i've learned about the 55l is that it's basically the 40 + a 15 daypack. if you already have a daypack you like, you could just get the 40. there's very little in the way of differences. haha i've watched videos on the difference between the new versions of the 40 and 55.
The 55 is basically the 40 with a daypack included. But the 55 main bag doesnt have the top grab pocket and the front stove away pocket. I instead bought the 40 and thinking about buying the daypack separately, since the 40 is a better backpack in itself than the 55. The cost is also about the same if you buy the 40+ daypack or the 55.
What are these two female connectors at the harness system for? On both shoulder straps above the sternum strap there is a hidden female connector. Any idea? They’re covering your hands at 3:44
anyone else have issues with the regular backpack straps digging into your body/armpit areas? I was testing the new FP40 and 55 about a month ago and after about a mile or 2 of walking around with the FP40 the bag was starting to get pretty uncomfortable and digging into my body, to the point where it was painful and I didn't want to wear it anymore, ended up getting the manta 24 and a small suit case, heard a few people saying that the older FP was more comfortable in that aspect but only heard it from 2 people, was curious what everyone else thinks
I have been using a Osprey Porter 46 for 10 years. It is a 36 liter volume... Shame on Osprey. So is this 40 liter really a 30 liter? Oh and can the laptop sleeve be completely removed. The last thing I want on vacation would be a laptop. My phone can handle all travel coordination.
Yes. For European flights, it's a "cabin bag" (vs "personal item"). I've used the older FP 40L as such on Aer Lingus, Ryan Air, and Delta earlier this year. For those regional carriers, you'd probably want to have a ticket that buys you a guaranteed spot in an overhead compartment. For the really strict airlines, you'll want to get out your tape measure.
A shame the lower straps that go around the waist area cannot be folded and hidden. I'm disappointed they cannot be hidden making it more of a useable bag for all circumstances.
Thanks! I am really interested in the new version ("only" have 1 farpoint + 1 fairview /blushing/) but I use that big outer pocket a lot, so good to know!
I never understand why these kinds of bags have a grab handle on the side, and - in this case - the laptop opening on the side as well. Even in an overhead compartment in an airplane, I usually shove my backpack in lengthwise, because otherwise I'm taking up more space than I should. So usually the top will be facing me when I open up the compartment. I think, for me, the REI Trail 40 might be the better way to go. It's lighter as well. Still, this does seem like a nice bag if you want to be able to use it as a quasi suitcase as well. It does have a better laptop compartment than the REI, and I like that you can put something behind there. I'm thinking of documents that you might to keep (relatively) unwrinkled.
@@ciba20 And yet it has features like zippers that pretty much run all the way down, which is really not common to many hiking bags. Besides, I’ve traveled for 5 months with a photography backpack. Which Packing Cubes were you using? I tried to find those on the Osprey site but couldn't tell which they were. Thanks!
Thorough review. Trying to a good day pack for me & my husband, waterproof secure. Thanks!😎🔥
Thanks for watching! 😃
Osprey green packing cubes look soooo good!!! 😭😭 mines are grey big contrast with the Farpoint inside colors
Thanks for watching! 😃

I'm in doubt about whether to buy this Farpoint 40 or the Porter 46. My intention is to travel and not worry about having to check luggage on flights.
I'm on the same boat, did you decide which one to go with? Can you give me feedback? Thanks!
Both are good bags. I ordered the Porter 46 since it had more padding and organization pockets, but was completely torn
@@rafafuriati how do you like it?
Perfect review! Exactly what I wanted to see before settling on this one. Thanks!

Your channel is absolutely outstanding! Barely can be even more useful
Thank you for your kind words! 😃

Thanks for this - what are the two straps on the front of the harness for? That go over the top of the shoulder and clip into the backpack?
I noticed your bag has lockable zippers for the laptop sleeve. I was at REI and noticed the current version has 1 zipper pull, and a fabric loop at the top, so it no longer locks (you could using the fabric, but certainly not the same). Is that a dumb move by Osprey?
Looks like a fantastic update! Now I just need Osprey to make the new model available in Canada 😭
🥹🥹🥹
Just bought the new model on Amazon. Hyped
It's available in many Canadian stores.
What a great review!
May I know what is the color of your bag in the video ? Is it tunnel vision grey ?
Could you answer or recall with the laptop compartment if there is a gap between the bottom of the compartment and the bottom of the bag ( i.e the laptop sits suspended )
I didn't realize the load lifters needed to be removed in order to store the straps? How long of a procedure is this?
I'm confused how many versions are there? I bought the volcanic grey is that the new or old?
Looking at this new Osprey 40l vs the older 40l subterra Thule.
Any input on which would be best ??
Great review! HOWEVER, does the laptop compartment have TWO or just ONE zipper? The video show two, which is great but the ones I have seen in the store have only one. Is this some kind of special version? Would greatly appreciate a clarification on this matter as I am about to buy one but it all depends on if I can find the one with the double laptop zippers. Thanks!
Mine has one too
Thank you for this informative video, I bought the original Farpoint 40 in 2019 and I realised how much of a bargain it is in price now.
Have used it on several overseas trips and it hasn't broken on me once, and I'm reassured by it's lifetime guarantee. Awesome stuff.
great review mate well done
More capacity in the main compartment? compared to the old version
Nice video! I think I’m going to get this pack! I just don’t know what small day pack to pair with it.
I am using this pack with a packable Northface Flyweight 17L. I think they updated it to a 20L, but I prefer the older 17L one.
@@nibe5775 does this bag easily attach to the north packable bag using the straps ?
Just backpacked Western Europe with this for two entire months. Brought a laptop along too. Feel free to ask me any questions!!
Hi, thanks for offering your AMA. Is the laptop pad fully removable?
Is this bag compatible to most airline carry on rules? Especially strict ones like Ryanair?
Yes, for Ryanair it's a cabin bag... I should clarify that my statement applies to the previous version of the 40L.
Is this accepted on most airlines as a carry on?
i was checking this out the other day and the guy in the store couldn't tell what the toggles were for also. It was a really nice bag but not sure i'm converted yet to having such a hike/outdoorsy-looking backpack strap system.
They’re nice to ensure the laptop doesn’t move much, but it is an odd inclusion. Thanks for watching 😃
-Eric
Would be useful if you could remove the flap and lower the backpack weight...
My big dislike is that using it as a backpack is very hikey, as opposed to like the Cotopaxi allpa or etc.
Thanks for the review - what size heroclip are you using with the bag?
No admin compartment, just one pull zipper on laptop compartment. Well, looks like older version offered much more for one-bag carry on travel.
Hello. Can you remove the rigid frame of the main pack, and wash the pack in the washing machine? Thanks
I usually pack a 26l bag with room left over for long travels but am looking for a bigger ont that compresses well incase I buy things along the way. If I get this and only fill it around half way more or less, can it be compressed down enough to where things stay in place inside? Giving me the extra room if I need it later on
Nice detailed review again. Thanks Erik!
Thanks for checking it out, Joe! 😃
-Eric
Does the curve of the back panel have any effect on the laptop?
The back panel isn't curved
I am 152 cm with short torso so looking for a backpack with adjustable harness system! I am torn though between this one with fairview 40L. I just want to have it safe for all flight, but have a little bit bigger size is also nice for more space :(
The old farpoint 40 is s/m size too. there is farview too. (created for women). And is made for people who are not tall. I had hard time to found it because is out of stock everywhere. I ordered it 4 days ago, from Estonia, now can't wait to have it. For a smaller backpack i prefer osprey daylite 26+6.
Does anyone know if you can tuck the hip belts behind the air flow pad?
I have the older version and no, you cannot tuck the hip belt behind.
So this is allowed for carryon luggage? It looks huge.....
Very informative. I think I'm getting this one.
Please inform people that the warranty is really different in Europe compared with the "all mighty guarantee" warranty in the US.. Even your website didn't mention this. I almost bought this bag before I made sure to double check this..
Hello could you tell me what is the difference ? I bought it in europe
@@anaisana6474 Hello, you can google the warranty or ask the store you bought it. I didn't buy it here because it's totally different.. It's really bad actually the warranty here..
Какой общий вес снаряжения ? 6 часов нормально если ты будешь делать перерыв каждый час на 5-10 минут, и конечно все зависит от общего веса.
Is it really only 23cm thick when packed? it looks much more.
The hip-belt looks like its sitting much too high, like at your belly button. Is it possible to lower it if I have a long torso?
How does it compare to the Nebula
Great video! Will you be reviewing the updated 55L? Hoping to see that to help decide between the two ✈️🎒😁
Thanks for the support 😃
-Eric
what i've learned about the 55l is that it's basically the 40 + a 15 daypack. if you already have a daypack you like, you could just get the 40. there's very little in the way of differences. haha i've watched videos on the difference between the new versions of the 40 and 55.
@@yaowsers77 is there a video reviewing the updated porter 46
The 55 is basically the 40 with a daypack included. But the 55 main bag doesnt have the top grab pocket and the front stove away pocket. I instead bought the 40 and thinking about buying the daypack separately, since the 40 is a better backpack in itself than the 55. The cost is also about the same if you buy the 40+ daypack or the 55.
What are these two female connectors at the harness system for? On both shoulder straps above the sternum strap there is a hidden female connector. Any idea? They’re covering your hands at 3:44
Pack pocket padded
anyone else have issues with the regular backpack straps digging into your body/armpit areas? I was testing the new FP40 and 55 about a month ago and after about a mile or 2 of walking around with the FP40 the bag was starting to get pretty uncomfortable and digging into my body, to the point where it was painful and I didn't want to wear it anymore, ended up getting the manta 24 and a small suit case, heard a few people saying that the older FP was more comfortable in that aspect but only heard it from 2 people, was curious what everyone else thinks
What a great review. ❤
Thanks for watching! 😃
Is there a 35L version :)
Is it at all possible to remove the hip belt?
Does anyone know if this bag classifies as carry on for majority of flights ?
Loving this bag!

@@PackHacker2 What would you suggest? The Farpoint 40, Daylite 26+6 Expandable Travel Pack, Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 or the Tropos 32?
Eldred Stravenue
A shame the lower straps that go around the waist area cannot be folded and hidden. I'm disappointed they cannot be hidden making it more of a useable bag for all circumstances.
The lower flap unrolls & does covers ALL the straps! See 2.38 mark in the video
@@thistoob That covers the whole of the back meaning you can't use the straps, not quite what i meant.

Aren't there another compartment in the lid? Like for pens and notebooks etc?
On this model, there’s just the larger one!

Will this fit under seat for air travel?
Nah, but you can still bring it on board. *It will have to go into the overhead lockers, however.*
Can you remove the laptop compartment?
NO.
Seems to be sold out everywhere! :(
Really cool, bravo :)
Thanks for watching! 😃

Thanks for sharing your insights, Peter! We find the laptop compartment is an upgrade, but still a little odd.
-Eric
REI Trail 40 is a hiking bag, not a travel bag...
@@ciba20 And yet it has features like zippers that pretty much run all the way down, which is really not common to many hiking bags. Besides, I’ve traveled for 5 months with a photography backpack.
I’m really not interested in these categories. Rather in what features a bag has. If I’m taking one backpack with me (which is how I like to travel), it should be adequate for everything I want to do with it.
@@starbase218 I don't think you will find a backpack that is an EDC, commuter, a traveler, a hiker and a photographer at the same time.
I have a PD 30 L v2, but it is not suitable for long distance hiking.
@@ciba20 I didn’t use that photography backpack (37 liter F-Stop Loka) as my photography bag. I found the Think Tank Change Up v2 to be much better for those needs. :)
I am also not saying anywhere that I want to do everything when I’m traveling. But I do want one bag that is adequate for everything that I want to do. Which includes hiking.
I do also have a small packable daypack.
Is the laptop pad removable?
No, it isn’t!
