    I wish Pack Hacker paid more attention to "weight" when comparing backpacks for one-bag travel. Backpack weight can make all the difference on airlines with 15 pound carry-on limits. Even when you don't have to deal with weight restrictions, carrying a lighter backpack has clear advantages. Light weight is the primary reason I use the 2.1 pound Tom Bihn Techonaut 30 in halcyon fabric. It enjoys a 1-3 pound weight advantage over most of your best One-bag Travel Backs of 2023. For me that is a big deal. Weight may not be the only consideration in one-bag travel, but it is an important one.

      @@vbesedke Actually, it is very easy to open the laptop compartment. The laptop compartment is separate from all other pockets and compartments in the Tom Bihn Techonaut. You simply unzip a YKK zipper to open the laptop compartment.

    Traded my aer TP3 for alpaka travel backpack and couldn't be happier. Yes the small pockets on the interior COULD be annoying, but i only put gear in there I need access to once my clothes and stuff are pulled out, or i store a backup cable or two in there and lesser used dongles. The bag is excellent and packs down when not full to be used as an edc bag

    We traveled this year with 2 Kids (12y & 7y) 14 days to greece (Athens + 2 Islands). Everything was packed in 2 Osprey 40l (Farpoint & Fairview) incl. the Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack, 1 Fjallraven SKULE 28 & 1 small Backpack from Tatonka (15L). As organisation we had 6 Packing Cubes from Peak Design (4x medium, 2x small), 4 Shoe Pouches (no name, from Amazon), 2 Osprey Drysack (14L + 20L), 2 Tech Pouches (1x Bellroy Tech Kit, 1x no name) and one (old) Toiletry Bag from Nomatic. And guess what? It was great 😎 Thanks to the Pack Hacker team, without your videos and blogs we would be chanceless 👍👍

      @@ricoko9119 Compared to my Bellroy Transit Backpack, which I use for business trips, the Farpoint/Farview were very comfortable. But we only had the backpacks effectivly on our backs for a short time, i.e. maximum 30-45 minutes (eg from the plane to the taxi or from the gate at the port into the ferry). For this reason, I'm not sure if I can make an accurate statement.

    Love the REI co-op rucksack 40. The bag looks more minimal than typical rucksack, can carry a bit more, can open fully for a clamshell like experience, and still has a good waist belt/frame for comfortable carry. I also put a luggage belt around the mid of the pack to keep a more slim profile.

It has a wishbone inner frame for support, a suspended mesh back panel for airflow, and extra thick padding on the straps and hipbelt. Always good to have more budget-friendly options. And not everyone needs separate laptop and admin pockets, which add weight and reduce main compartment capacity.

    I recently bought the Farpoint 40 for the possible extra space of my usual carry on: The Osprey Porter 30. The thing was that when I opened the Porter 30 and the Farpoint 40 side by side I didn't notice much of a space difference in their main compartments except the Farpoint was slightly longer. I think the reason is because the laptop sleeve intrudes into the main compartment on the Farpoint where in the Porter no other compartments intrude on the main compartment. I've traveled with the Porter 30 and depending on how it's packed, I can actually fit it under the seat in front of me. The Farpoint is slightly longer so it probably won't fit under the seat. I like the Farpoint I just got, but truthfully if I knew how the laptop compartment intrudes into the main compartment I probably wouldn't have gotten it because it really isn't giving me the extra space I thought it would to justify the money spent when I already owned a Porter 30.

    As someone who travels on budget airlines with strict carryon weight restrictions, all these bags are way too heavy. I don't want to waste 1/3 to half my weight allowance on just the bag alone.
    I'm waiting for the day travel pack manufacturers take more cues from the ultralight backpacking companies and make a 40 litre front loading pack that weighs under 1kg.

      @@cbunn81 it's a minor gripe for how much was lost with the redesign

    • @cbunn81
      @cbunn81 7 місяців тому +1

      @@kismet8010 I have to disagree.
      That laptop placement moves the center of mass away from the body, making the load less stable and less comfortable. Not to mention offering less protection to the laptop inside. Putting the laptop against the back just makes sense. There's good reason it's the de facto standard for backpacks.
      The material used seems nicer to me, and the adjustable harness is another improvement. I don't see much lost in the redesign, actually. I think the only thing that might have been better was the bottle pouches, but I don't think they were especially good in the old version either.
      What do you feel was lost?

      I purchased the original Osprey Fairview a couple years ago. Very comfortable harness system but I dislike the lack of organisation and waste of space for the laptop compartment which I don't use. Just bit the bullet and spent $$$ on the Tom Bihn Aeronaut30 which I've been eyeing for years, praying the backpack straps will fit my very short torso.

    Well, these bp's are all expensive? Considering I've had one on my back pretty much everyday since I was 18 and I'm 53- I wouldn't buy ANY of these. You should be videoing bags half that price. Frankly, the extra 70 or 80 bucks you spend= means nothing in the end product and a lot of them don't even have good straps or a back system. Plus, are any of these ones you'd want to walk around in fucking public with? Probably not.
