    Another train fight? Has anyone, ever, fought on top of a train? Considering how often it happens in movies.

    Saw it on IMAX today. Cruise and McQuarrie bring it as usual. Even though the motorcycle stunt has been featured in every trailer, the scene in the movie is still a white knuckle hold your breath moment. And the train sequence rivals (dare I say exceeds) the best of Spielberg moments.
    The plot seems like it comes from a hokey 90s movie and yet given current events feels frighteningly relevant.
    One note: I loved Pom's performance but her character seems better suited for a Batman movie.

    • @ProuvaireJean
      @ProuvaireJean Рік тому +2

      Agree the plot comes across as hokey at times. I know they were trying to tap into what's arguably the great existential threat of the information age, but the way they presented it makes some scenes come across like a B-grade science fiction thriller.
      The opening scene I thought tapped into the zeitgeist in three ways: Russia, AI and (inadvertently) submarines.
      Thought it may have been a sign that the franchise has been going on for a tad too long when they recycled the "dramatic final showdown on top of the train" sequence from the first movie. ;-)

    • @chazharris
      @chazharris Рік тому +3

      The action in this movie had the SUSPENSE that made classic Spielberg so thrilling and feel like a rollercoaster. Even the exposition scenes they managed to plant things in the scene to distract the audience so they were kept tensely distracted looking at something else while having something explained. Loved that!

    *Mission:* *Impossible* *-* *Dead* *Reckoning* *P1*
    Just finished watching it and a bit overrated by the masses but still good. I don't think it's the best MI film. I think Fallout is still better and Ghost Protocol remains by far my favorite.
    Ghost Protocol is like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade of the MI franchise where it's the most fun and funniest. My biggest issue with Dead Reckoning is the MacGuffin was the submarine key about this AI "entity". I'm still lost with the story..
    *SPOILERS*
    I'm mad that Rebecca Ferguson and Pom Klementieff's characters died. I love Ilsa Faust! And I thought Paris would stay alive and be part of Ethan's crew. But I guess it's no Fast series where everyone can come back from the dead which is stupid. The Fast series only wishes to be as good as the Mission series.
    The women in the Mission franchise are generally awesome. Look at all these actresses who were part of it: Emmanuelle Béart, Thandie Newton, Maggie Q, Keri Russell, Michelle Monaghan, Paula Patton, Léa Seydoux, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Hayley Atwell.
    Ilsa was ranked #1 for most badass female character in the MI franchise and they kill her off! I'm pissed! 😡 She was such a badass in Rogue Nation using her thighs like Famke Jannsen in GoldenEye. Bring back Jane Carter then. Paula Patton is not the greatest actress but her Jane can kick ass! Bring back Jeremy Renner too.
    One of the reasons why I love the MI franchise is the women are as equally dangerous and useful as the men. It doesn't try to be WOKE like someone we know who runs Lucasfilm with more annoying female characters. The females don't come off as annoying or helpless. Like Atwell's character was doing the work on that train. Females can take care of themselves in this franchise.
    Another reason why I love the MI franchise is it's probably the closest thing we have at having a Metal Gear Solid live-action movie franchise. A lot of the characters are very 2D, black or white, the way James Bond films are. Not gray like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. But it's still the closest to having a Solid Snake with all kinds of espionage.
    Great to see a lot of actors and actresses I know. Two carryovers from Top Gun: Maverick were in it: Charles Parnell (Warlock) and Greg Tarzan Davis (Coyote). Great to see Esai Morales (La Bamba, My Family as Chucho) still getting roles. Great to see Indira Varma and Cary Elwes who I saw in BlackBerry. Then of course: Tom, Simon, Ving, Hayley, Rebecca, Vanessa, and Pom.
    I thought the train scene at the end was awesome!! It's a mixture of the trailer scene in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and the opening shot from Uncharted 2. But Gabriel was kicking ass. He lays down Grace and then kills Ilsa, my favorite female character of the entire franchise. But I guess it's a way to raise the stakes for the next one.
    Grace is just as untrustworthy as Helena Shaw but she doesn't come off as smug, annoying, and unfunny like Phoebe's character was. But Grace is a low-life like Helena was.
    My MI Favorites
    1. Ghost Protocol (by a lot!!!)
    2. Fallout
    3. Dead Reckoning Part One
    4. Rogue Nation
    I've never seen MI 1, 2, and 3 yet. I'll watch them this week. But from my understanding, the first 3 are bottom 3 with Part 2 widely regarded as the worst one. MI didn't get really good until 4 when Christopher McQuarrie started writing it.
    Overall: B or 8/10
    Shocking to say this, but I enjoyed The Flash a little more than this. But I'm planning to watch MI7 a few times. My opinions could change. I haven't seen a lot of movies this year but my top 4 are Air, BlackBerry, The Flash, and MI7.
    I definitely enjoyed MI7 more than GotG V3 and Indy 5. Haven't seen Across The Spider-Verse yet. I still rank Quantumania as the worst film of the year. Beau Is Afraid is a bit misunderstood that first viewing. But the images stay with you as Maggie (deepfocuslens) has said like a nightmare you can't forget. It's similar to the moments you see in Mulholland Drive.
    Please bring back Paula Patton if they already killed off Rebecca Ferguson's character. I'm still pissed Ilsa died! Hayley's Grace will be a worthy replacement but it hurts Ilsa is gone. And I wanted more of Pom. No more being the comic relief as Mantis in Guardians. She was a badass in this film. McQuarrie writes very good female characters while Kathleen Kennedy inserts annoying ones.
    Ghost Protocol Hallway Projection Scene
    ua-cam.com/video/7DkV8WE7DFA/v-deo.html
    ^ This scene still cracks me up nearly 12 years later. Even though it had a weak story, MI4 was so much fun like Indy 3 and Fast Five. We got Hoodie Ethan Hunt.
    I don't know if there will ever be another Mission as fun as that one from late-2011. The last three lost that Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade-like humor and fun while MI4 has the highest replay value for me.

They show the jump and cut to the scene in the train and he just crashes in. Such a missed opportunity to film him all the way through. Wasted epic stunt.

    Hmmmm, I really have to say, that I do not get all the positive reviews.
    I like the MI movies, the second one is goofy, but the others rank between good and really good.
    But Dead Reckoning?
    Yeah, it wasn´t bad but there are so many flaws.
    Too much exposition, especially the mission room scene in the beginning.
    And how they present the topic to the director - there are five or six people talking about the new thing, while everyone completes the line from another, a very bad style.
    The introduction scene of Ethan - again exposition, the same informations we got before and - I don´t know - it seemed to be that it´s more about "hey, here´s Cruise again, the guy from last years blockbuster". I mean, it´s a MI movie, we know that he is in it...
    The action is great but many action scenes seemed more or less the same we saw in the last 2 or 3 MI movies. And for me - they weren´t better, they felt a bit slower, especially the car chases. And the big stunt which nearly everyone saw month before - it was good, but it seemed to be there only because it had to be there. This stunt didn´t fit in this movie.
    I missed some well thought through plans which let to thrilling and more quiet spy scenes.
    The villain didn´t work for me. He is a bad guy - ok, but why?
    And a bit nitpicky at the end - the train. How can an old train like that continuing work without someone feeding it with coal?
    Overall, an ok movie but disappointing for me.
    McQuarrie can do much much better and it seemes that this movie is the culmination of many problems during production.

To list some of the problems… bad geography in scenes including the opening exposition briefing and club scenes, corny dialogue across the board including too much “trailer” dialogue, random GoPro shots interrupting the cinematography in the actions scenes, CGI devaluing the big bike jump set piece and to top it off (SPOILER) Gabriel the villain shaking his fist shouting “HHHUUUUNNNNTTT” as he loses the key like he is some mustache-twirling villain at the end of a cartoon. I feel like I am the only one that did NOT think this movie was good at all. I went in to the theater with 0 expectations so I was ready to be surprised, I was not expecting anything, I didn't watch the trailer I didn't look up any reviews. I just came out of the theater and holyshit, this movie was not good in my opinion. Spoiler alert Just the start of the movie alone sums up what I dislike about this movie. First of all, its a submarine scene, thats probably the most boring setting imaginable, its dark, its in the ocean, you can't see anything besides the radar screen the characters are looking at as well. Its not epic, its just not a good opening. The torpedo and vanishing enemy boat is extremely underwhelming. I couldn't believe people got immersed into this scene since is came across as a complete joke.
    I'm not going to lie, Tom Cruise is ofcourse a good actor and for his age he is really doing great, he can run fast, he can jump, he can.. well look like tom cruise without doing ANYTHING cool. I am so surprised to hear people say this movie was good. WHAT MADE IT GOOD!? It's 2 hours of dialogue and its just not captivating at all. How in the world can this special super special agent loose a train, he lost it, he literally asked where did the train go.... He then proceeds to find his way up an entire mountain and almost rides his motorcycle off the edge as if he didn't know he was on a mountain. He proceeds to be confused and wonders why he's up there. Don't forget we are chasing a steam train here, with a designated route, there is no good reason for this guy to not know where the train is. Oh wait he see's the train now, and he notices he has a parachute! I could continue but the movie (IN MY OPINION) is just not good.

    Though I personally found ATSV more emotionally gripping with much tighter dialogue and more impressive visuals, this is how you do a Part One movie. I left the theater not only excited to see what happens next but thoroughly satisfied with what I got. Though the overarching threat still remains, this film's central conflicts are all resolved and most every character feels like they ended off in a good place. Whereas ATSV feels like one long movie that I have to wait who knows how long to be able to finish, this felt like its own story.

      I group Part One's in three separate categories. There are films like Fast X, which feel like half of a movie, where the studio and creators just decide to cut off the movie at a certain point without any sense of completion for character or story. Then there are films like ATSV, which do have complete character graphs for the leads, but the story ends on a cliffhanger and is incomplete. Then there are films like IW and MI7, which feel like a chapter of the story is finished, and the next movie will be the next chapter of the story.

    I think Fallout was better - but Dead Reckoning is must see.

    It’s unbelievable how this series shines through each episode. This has a larger story and the resolution, next year. I think this is my favorite movie of 2023, til Oppenheimer. Dead reckoning is really a satisfying film.

    SPOILER ALERT: I completely disagree on the fact that this is HOW you make a part one of a two part movie. Harry Potter is a good example, Infinity War is a good example on how to do it right. You have to set up the stakes so that you re engaging with the story and the characters. Dead Reckoning literally wraps up everything so well, makes our characters win completely and I didn’t even feel like we needed a part two but just to saw those movies together. For me it’s such a screenwriting mistake to make a two part movie where the heroes succeed at the end of the first part. What is there left to explore? How can we even doubt that our heroes will succeed in the second part. We don’t. Especially when the villain is so incredibly dull…

    • @SupergirlSurprise
      @SupergirlSurprise Рік тому +1

      That's exactly how I feel about the movie, you never see the characters at their lowest ebb to pick back up in part two. It's no Empire Strikes Back.

  • @NickMichalak
    @NickMichalak Рік тому +1

    I went to see the film a second time because I had a negative theatre experience the first time, and couldn't really assess the film aside from that. It does have great, fun action and the entire cast is amazing! However, the story does feel too complicated and bogged down with too many exposition dump scenes. Centering the story on this nebulous AI construct is something I just cannot wrap my head around. Why it suddenly became this rogue intelligence and what its goals are remain undefined. I feel these films work so well because they have tangible stakes that you can relate easily to an audience. I can kinda understand the Entity and the various complicated plot elements tacked onto it, but it's still too ill defined for it to be something I can feel a threat from. I like a tangible bad guy with a clear motive and objective.
    Also, did anyone else notice how the digital cinematography looked a little lacking in detail and definition? All the previous films were shot on film, but they ditched that this time. On 2K Digital IMAX and 4K Dolby Cinema, I found it just didn't look very good. A lot of shots looked flat and devoid of detail. The DP on this just moved up from the 2nd Unit on the previous two Mission films, and I think the digital option was the wrong way to go. Plenty of films, mind you, can look stunning with the right digital technology in the right hands, but I should've been WOWED by every shot considering the formats I saw this in. Sadly, I kept noticing inconsistencies in the quality of the digital image throughout. Sometimes I got a lot of detail in close ups and well lit scenes, but others were backlit and faces looked flat with no detail to them at all. Furthermore, why were all these dialogue scenes shot from wildly different angles, usually breaking the 180º rule? It felt like someone trying to shoot it like a De Palma film without having any understanding whatsoever of the craft and skill behind that type of filmmaking. It was very distracting moving eye lines all over the damn frame.
    All in all, I wasn't really that taken with this entry. If there's supposed to be some big back story between Ethan and Gabriel, it would've been nice if they detailed that so we could understand their relationship at all. It's another vaguely presented concept that kept me from fully engaging with the story, emotionally. If others got more of the film than I did, that's great, but I just watched the entire franchise (on 4K Blu-ray no less) and this left me a bit cold overall.

    I really liked Dead Reckoning Part One and I can't wait for Part 2. But I think Fallout is still my favorite. As much as I enjoyed Dead Reckoning Part One, I think I would've preferred they continued the story with The Apostles after Fallout, instead of an entirely new story and villains. I know they killed off Solomon Lane and John Lark in Fallout, but it would've been really cool if they survived or maybe someone takes Lane's place (maybe Gabriel?) to lead them and Dead Reckoning Part One is the penultimate finale of Ethan Hunt and the IMF finally taking Lane and The Apostles down once and for all in Part 2. It would've been cool too if this AI (The Entity) was created by The Apostles as a final attempt to "dismantle the old world and bring forth a new one from the ashes." I personally feel Lane is the best MI villain. l loved how they built him and The Syndicate (then Apostles) up in Rogue Nation because although I didn't at all agree with them, I understood why they turned against their governments and agencies and wanted to bring the old world order down. They were forced to do so much for their governments/agencies only to be disavowed, cast aside, and all that trauma of taking lives for the sake of the “greater good” takes a toll. Until they finally lost faith in that system. It would’ve been cool to keep fleshing out that story because Lane and The Syndicate/Apostles are basically the evil versions of Ethan and the IMF. They're what Ethan and his team would become if they really snapped, went rogue, lost their moral compass, and tried to dismantle the old world order/governments.

    It was a good movie, if still not quite as good as the previous two. What really pissed me off though, was the treatment of Rebecca Ferguson’s character Faust. The way they literally fridged her before our eyes for a new model…sorry new leading lady 😒 in the form Hayley Atwell. Who don’t get me wrong is a great new character…but why at the cost of Ferguson?
    And you could see here that Ferguson was phoning it in too, because she new she had been unceremoniously fired from the franchise by Cruise. And she was so great in the other movies. It just somewhat soured proceedings for me. And maybe Karma is a bitch, because the movie is not doing as well at the box-office as it should be.
    On a side note…did anyone notice how similar most of the big action sequences were to Indie 5? From the locations, to the car chase, to the train sequence…just better executed.

    The first part of the plot was much more in true MI style, with Ilsa kicking ass, shot out in the exotic desert. They better bring ilsa back in part 2, shes Ethan equal with special agent training. It made no sense for Ethan to easily invite grace who has only 1 skill in stealing 🗝️ to join his exclusive team. She suddenly walked away with all that money about to transfer to her bank? This part of the plot is weak. Who can forget Ilsa gold dress when she jumped off the Vienna Opera house with Ethan? This Grace looks oridanry with her waitress outfit, who attended a fancy party in Venice wearing a white shirt and a pants?
    I noticed when were the segments when they took a break, after the fiat car chase or the train racked, , they looked clean. Blame it to the makeup artist

    I have to disagree with the better part one than spider-verse. I don't necessarily feel that anyone besides Grace had an arc or experienced real growth. and Grace's character stealing the key and running away every scene was getting old fast.
    Spider-verse on the other-hand had significant growth and arcs progressed by both Gwen and Miles. Sure it didn't advertise to the movie-plebs that it was a part 1, but it was widely and pretty commonly known that it would be.

The performances are better, the cast is better, the stakes are higher and the tension is greater, i held my breath for the last 30 min . While jw4 i never felt tense just enjoyed watchint the fighting. Anyways 2 great action movies from this year none the less!
