  • Coming up… an interview with Howard and David Bellamy, aka the Bellamy Brothers… They’re a band that had 10 #1 hits and a top 10 hit in three straight decades on one chart and had one of the biggest #1 hits of the 70s on the pop charts with a song that Neil Diamond’s roadie wrote… “Let Your Love Flow.” Neil didn’t do the song and then it was passed over by others until the Bellamys stepped in and made it a standard. And then they followed it up with another huge hit: “If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me.” That one’s essentially a dad joke, but because of its title, everyone still remembers it. Coming up on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for our latest edition of Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Stories you won’t hear anywhere else! Today we have a special session with the Bellamy brothers on their two biggest hits, the 70s number one smash Let Your Love Flow and this dad joke extraordinaire hit If I said you you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me… one of the longest song titles ever and a song that’s pretty much a dad joke! ha ha The Bellamy Brothers had 10 #1 hits, not the country charts but were a major crossover success like Kenny Rogers and Eddie Rabbit. they also had a top 10 hit in 3 straight decades on that charts one of of only a few artists or bands to do that.
Let Your Love Flow was written by Neil Diamond roadie Larry Williams but it didn’t really fit Neil’s style and other artists passed on it including Johnny Rivers but the Bellamy brothers knew it was a smash… But in the case of If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, the song was written by David Bellamy and derived its double entendre dad joke song title from a Groucho Marx line. David used to watch Groucho on, You Bet Your Life, where Marx used the saying while interviewing an attractive female contestant, then shook his cigar and raised his eyebrows as he always did. You couldn’t do that today that’s for sure!

I agree! I LOVED this song! Even as a youngster, I got a tickle from the title! lol To me, I got that it was a cute, joke, fun song! 💜💜💜 I miss the days, when people didn't get offended, over something that truly was not meant to be offensive. I was raised by my Maternal grandparents, who I called Mom & Dad (may they rest in peace). They loved the Bellamy Brothers, and they loved the song, and they also, thought that it was a cute, funny song! 💜 I loved seeing them having fun, dancing together, to it! 😊💜

I am from the Bellamy Brothers’ hometown. My parents went to school with them. There was a picture of them in their yearbook. I used to talk to their mom when she would bring her white Cadillac through the local car wash where I worked as a kid. Very nice lady. (She was good friends with the owner). I even recorded some saxophone parts on some demos for his son and played with the son live at The Rattlesnake Festival that use to happen in our hometown.

I’m from Brooksville. My mom, dad & aunts and uncles went to Pasco with Howard and David also. My grandpas homestead is very near their ranch on Old Mission road. I’m gonna bet our families know one another. I lived in St Joe for a short minute decades ago but I moved to Colorado in 1990. I see Howard & David every time they come through this neck of the woods.
David played “You ain’t just whistling Dixie” and dedicated it to my uncle Bobby when he died back in 08. Howard and uncle Bobby worked on a survey crew together before Let Your Love Flow took off

The Bellamy Brothers are another group that I "forgot about". Growing up in the 70s, they were on the radio all the time. I remember hearing them on drives to my grandparents or on the road going on vacation. But as I got older and listened to different music, they faded in my memory. But alas, PoR does a video on them with an interview and brings back some great memories of being in the car with the family.

Adam, what I love most about your show, what keeps me coming back every day, is how you remind me of music that I have loved and forgotten about. It cracks me up to remember hearing my mother sing “Beautiful Body” in the car. Forgetting her 12 year old son was there. I remember being a young adult and hearing “Let your love flow” and not being able to stop singing along. Your show is like a Time Machine and I just want to thank you for taking us on that ride every day!

Thank you, SO MUCH, for doing this particular interview! I LOVE The Bellamy Brothers! 😊💜 I grew up, looking them! 😊💜 I am 54 years old! I still remember my parents taking me to, the Drive-in Movie to, see Little Darlings, when I was about 10 years old! 😊 💜 (My parents "date nights" were going to the movies, constantly...and they always brought me along, until I was able to, be old enough, to stay home alone. My Mom & Dad were actually, my Maternal Grandparents. I miss them a lot. May they rest in peace.) 💜 When we went to see Little Darlings, and "Let Your Love Flow" in the film, All 3 of us, just started singing along! 😊💜 None of us, knew that we WERE going to start signing and we all laughed together! 😊💜 Such a great meeting memory! 💜 Also, as a youngster, I got a kick out of the song, "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body..."! lol 😉 😅 My Mom & Dad also, loved the song, and I loved watching them, dance to it! 😊💜 They had fun, when they did, and they were great dancers! What a wonderful walk down memory lane! 💜💜 You always do such a great job, with these interviews! Again, I really thank you for this one! 💜💜💜💜

I lived in Tampa, Town and Country in the 80’s as a teen . CO89…I passed by their tour bus all the time on Sheldon Rd… funny to hear them mention Tampa…. My Grandparents were C & W fans…. I was going to country concerts with them for years… state fairs etc…. I remember Ronnie Miilsap, Bellamy Brothers, Slyvia, but Loretta Lynn, jeez…..I turned out to be universal fan of most music with Prince, Cyndi, The Cure, Madonna and Peter Murphy ending up being my faves but in the late 70’s/ early 80’s seeing the Bellamy’s and above mentioned close up and playing was a real school of watching em perform and sing… my taste in music is verity different now but I will always appreciate… because appreciation of music is it’s own thing…. Thank you, guys for sharing

Both of this songs came out during my youth and I love them. I hadn't heard "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body..." in many years; they actually used it in one my exercise classes.

Probably my three favorite songs by the Bellamy brothers (in ni particular order) are "Let Your Love Flow", "When I'm Away From You" and "Old Hippie" (the single version over the album version...wish I could find an MP3 of the single version).

I love Swamp Witch too as well as other Jim Stafford songs. Swamp Witch was one of the songs that got me into writing folk horror.

Let your love fly like a bird on the wind dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah🎶… HEY I think I was 5 or 6 back then….
