I’m not sure there’s anyone else in America who could do a 20 minute video about Dan Fogelberg and capture his essence the way you can. You have truly earned the moniker “Professor of Rock”!
Longer is an ok song. Always thought it was the equivalent of a Jr. High love note. Preferred Same Old Lang Syne, a grownup song about grownup lives. Do agree though that his music is phenomenal.
My girlfriend and I started listening to Fogelberg in the 70's and went to a few of his concerts. We've been together 47 years and still enjoy listening to him. Another artist who left us much too soon. RIP Dan Fogelberg. Your music will live on forever.
🙂 *Your sentiment is good & true; the hall of lame/shame doesn't have any more legitimacy than anyone in this comment section. The most rock n roll thing any artist can do is to tell them they just don't want their bogus "award" & to phük off. (few have)* *My personal opinion is that a bowling trophy sitting in YOUR living room with Dan's name scratched on it is every bit as good as the hall. Cheers!* 😊 🎶 🎵
Just a few weeks ago it was the 3rd Anniversary of my wife's passing. At every major event of my life with Yolanda I would dedicate a song for her. Anniversary, Birthday she got a song I played on Social Media for her. Even after her death, I have continued to do this. For this year on the anniversary of the day I lost her, I dedicated Longer to her. Thanks Prof. I am and have been one of your biggest supporters for years.
My favorite song of Dan Fogelberg is 'Leader of the Band'. My father passed away a while back. Every year on his birthday I light a candle and play 'Leader of the Band', it makes me feel close to him again.
I think Dan picked up a lot about music composition from his father. You don't hear many songs with the solo instrumental passages he put in his songs. It changes the song from pretty good to entrancing. I think this came from his early years of being around a school and community band leader and seeing how different instruments can make or break a song. Like the flugelhorn in the featured song here. It
Such a great, well written song, both music and lyrics. My personal favorite as well. Sorry you lost your dad. Mine is gone too, about 15 years ago. I still miss him😢
Loved Dan Fogelberg growing up. My favorite is Old Lang Syne...still stops me in my tracks today. "Met my old lover at the grocery store". Who CAN'T relate to that??? RIP Dan & thanks for the memories Professor ❤
Just wrote a comment how the song stops me in my tracks! Saw yours and remember one new yrs eve being outside in the car in front of a grocery store..raining, cold and this song came on.... completely torn up. Prolly 30 yrs ago.
"Leader of the Band" and "Run for the Roses" will bring a tear or two every time I hear them. I loved Dan Fogelberg's music back in the day and still do! He is greatly missed in this world...💔🎶🎸
In the early 80’s I was completely in love with this woman who would never give the time of day. One night I happen to see her at a local bar. I went outside to get some air and ran into her in the parking lot. Im not sure what possessed me, but I started singing “Longer” to her. She loved that a guy would sing her a song she absolutely loved. I got completely caught up in the moment. Her eyes never left mine and my heart was ready to explode. It was perfect and I thought maybe I had a chance until her friends came out of the bar and wanted to leave. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and said thank you. I never saw her after that. It was a moment Ive never forgotten. Thank you Dan Folgelberg for the beautiful words and memories.
@@JAMESLEVEE Wow- you’ve got some deep bitterness in your heart, eh? Maybe it’s a simple as she was in love with someone else already. Just because some isn’t into you doesn’t make her a bitch. I doubt you have been head-over-heels about everyone who felt that way about you, have you thought about that?
Okay, maybe I was a little sharp on her. Maybe that was her last night in town before going off to get married or go to graduate school out of state. I can't get behind the eyes of a woman years younger than me and unknown to me. All I can do is get behind your eyes and wonder why she would have completely disappeared immediately afterwards.
I found Dan with his hits from the Innocent Age album and then enjoyed his entire catalog. I met my future wife in 1983. We did not have that much in common, but we both loved Dan's music. It was with that music that our hearts became one, and we grew up together with that music as our underpinning.. We married in 1985 and still listen to Dan together today..
48 years married this year. I was singing Dan's songs with my older brother who played the guitar really well, in the late 70's. I married his best friend.
Thanks for sharing this tribute. I met Dan in 1982 in Bangor, Maine and while our time was short, we shared a good conversation about music, Maine and sailing. It bothered me when news broke of his death from prostrate cancer. Little did I know that 10 years later, I would come down with stage 3 prostrate cancer. I reached out to his widow and found out our diagnosis was very similar with the same aggressive Gleason scores. Prostrate cancer treatment has come a long way, but early detection is the key... get tested and monitor any changes in your PSA! I'm in full remission, thank God. God bless and again thanks.
If you had Cancer I would expect you would know how to pronounce it and spell it, you repeatedly said prostrate cancer, prostrate is the act of laying flat on the ground face down, PROSTATE is the male organ that gets PROSTATE cancer, were you making this story up? If you did have cancer I hope you are well.
I am very glad to read this comment. I am in remission as well. Those that have fallen to this particular form of cancer reads like a "Who's Who" in music. Dan Fogelberg, Frank Zappa, David Sanborn, Johnny Ramone, Ndugu, Lee Kerslake, & Andre Watts, And the list is even longer for musicians that are dealing with this affliction. God bless you, as well. my friend.
I was a 15 year old teenage girl in 1981, the year Hard To Say came out. I couldn't believe it when I heard the song. Even though it was written from a man's point of view, the words "...every time the sky begins to snow, you cry..." shocked me. For years, every time we had the first snow of winter, I would cry. I couldn't explain why. But those words hit me in my soul. As I grew older, many more songs became relatable. Such a beautiful lyricist. Such a talent. And such a gorgeous man.
I cry at the first snow every year. It takes me back to my childhood in Wisconsin. One year there was no snow and they kept talking about not having a white Christmas. On Xmas eve it finally started snowing and I kneeled on the couch looking out the large window and cried happy tears.
Ugh! I waited the whole video for Adam to talk about Leader of the Band and he never did. Sheesh! Way too much gooey praise for Longer. Leader and his relationship with his Dad would have been much more interesting to delve into.
Saw Dan Fogelberg at the Rainbow theatre in Denver back in the mid to late 80’s. He was touring with his blues band. I attended the second show and people were leaving the venue looking to sell their tickets on the cheap because there was a rumor that it wasn’t Dan Fogelberg, but some guy fronting a blues band under Fogelberg’s name. I purchased the ticket from a guy on the cheap and listened to one of the best concerts I’ve ever heard. He could rock. He opened the show stating that despite the rumors, he was, in fact, Dan Fogelberg. Played blues standards. Incredible.
My friend’s family was very close friends with Dan’s family back in Illinois, and When she got married, Dan sang this song at her wedding. I wasn’t there, but I have seen the wedding videos.
I remember my brother coming home one night in the early 70’s, telling me he saw this singer/songwriter at a bar in Peoria named Dan Fogelberg and bought his Home Free album from him. My brother said, “this guy is going places!” He did!
So it sounds like you're from near, but not in, Peoria; where'd you grow up or live at the time? I'm from Galesburg - 45 minutes NW on 74. Always thought it was so cool that he was from Peoria - & his dad was a band teacher (I was a band geek flute player lol).
My mom's family is very musical. Gramps played with Marty Robbins one night, mom had a scholarship to Peabody back in the early 60's. They both loved Dan Fogelberg's tenor. There was just a purity to it, like a Chuck Berry song: "How else would you do that?" For me THE Dan Fogelberg song was "Same Old Lang Syne". The pathos flows out throughout the song. The lyrics are like painting a picture with words. You can see them sitting in the car, snow falling. Just gorgeous...
i knew and loved his music and i have a somewhat different personal connection. Dan died Oct 16, 2007. i knew of Dan's death and his cause of death. I had prostrate cancer surgery, 2 days later, on Dec 18, 2007. Dan was 54 , i was only 48. it was hard not to think i had only 6 years left of my life. i made it and i am still hear today, wounded by the experience but still here. getting by
My Husband died on 12/17/07 of brain cancer… so I figure when I get to heaven and look up my husbands mansion, Dans will be in the same neighborhood 😊❤️😊
How can you not love his beautiful voice?! The first time I heard Longer Than I was floored! And he did such a beautiful tribute to his dad in Leader Of The Band. And those two are just the beginning!
My boomer mom was obsessed with Dan. His earliest albums are the soundtrack of my childhood. I got dragged to many of his concerts. I still listen to those records start to finish-especially Netherlands-and get all the feels.
Met my husband at college and we married after graduation in 1975. He went on to graduate school and we eventually ended up at the Univ. Of Delaware. Dan Fogelberg was our absolute favorite artist. Being a poor graduate school couple, we saved our pennies to buy the next Dan Fogelberg album. Do you have any idea how excited we were when we learned Dan was going to perform on April 12, 1979 at the Univ. Of Delaware? We had to get tickets. It was Dan by himself, on stage, with his guitar. No flash, no theatrics - just pure heaven. Three years later our son was born- we named him Dan.
Dan's life has touched mine deeply, for much of it. My wife and I met in early 1980, and "Longer" became our song. I still tear up when I hear its opening. We had it played at our wedding in 1983. It was our song for over 40 years. We saw Dan in concert, finally, in Raleigh in 2004. It was one of his last live concerts, and it was great. I read Dan's wife's Jean's memoirs on Dan's last few months, and was moved by her description of giving Dan permission to die - also very moving. In 2021, my wife had a stroke, and it was a brain tumor. It was a year from Hell after 37 years of marriage. When it was clear she was at the end, I remembered what Jean said in that memoir, and I told my wife that it was OK to go, I love you, and we'll be ok. She immediately stopped breathing and passed. Jean was right. Permission to leave one's loved ones is a thing. I'm still moved by his music. "Birds", his very last song, is so very sad. And for some reason, I tear up every time I hear "Stars" which you played a clip of early in your "Longer" video. Thank you so much for your coverage of this great man, and understand that your pieces on his works are very important to me.
Years ago I had the incredible opportunity to see Dan play in Parkwest Utah. It was just him, his guitar, and grand piano. I was completely mesmerized. He was a master musician, singer/songwriter. Terribly sad he is gone. The world is missing out, that's for sure.
I was there as well. I was 8 months pregnant and made that climb up the mountain to see him. It was a struggle, but totally worth it. I remember hearing his beautiful voice and seeing a shooting star in the background. It was a beautiful night.
My husband and sons were there. I had to miss the vacation due to a death in my family. I still regret I didn't get to see this performance. Gone way too soon.
I saw Dan play three times. The most impressive performance was at Arrowhead in 78 ,I believe. He was on tour with the Eagles . He came out alone and announced his band was broke down on the road ,so he would be solo. He used his skills playing guitar and piano to two standing ovations. I was and am still blown away . I fully understood what he tried to say to me and thank God for the treasure he sent us in him. It's only when listen that you learn....
Dan was one of my favorite story tellers. His ability to weave a complex yet simple story to music that flowed and intertwined with your thoughts and heart, is unmatched in my opinion. I felt a great loss when he passed away.
Well done, Professor! Dan has been one of my favorite artists from the late 70's. Before he passed, I went to his website and read what Dan had written about his illness, prostate cancer. He said for men to get checked regularly by their doctor and not to let ten or fifteen seconds of discomfort deter them from being checked. He wrote that ten or fifteen seconds could save men from going through the terrible time he was then having with the disease. I took his advice then and hope any man reading this to do the same!
Without a doubt one of the best, most beautiful, male voices ever. He possessed clarity, control and conviction in every song he sang. I always thought of him as the male equivalent to Karen Carpenter - what a duet that would have made‼️ RIP Dan and Karen. The world is much more beautiful having your incredible talents still live on.
Wow, that's never even crossed my mind before, but YES... 100%. You're right on the money with that assessment. As much as I despise much of today's technology... Using it to make a duet like that happen posthumously, would at least be a use for something positive and good.
@@ProfessorofRockLonger was my wife’s and my song, played during our church wedding Every time I hear it I think of how much I love my wife, now in our 45th year together
For me the Dan Fogelberg that catches me in the throat was Run For The Roses. That perfectly captured a child’s first step, first exploring the world, first everything
@@stevetournay6103 - Yup! Pretty amazing. I sang it to my daughter when she was little and after being told about it by her, my granddaughters used to ask me to sing it to them every time they saw me and sometimes that was every day for weeks! 😄❤️
I was fortunate enough to see Dan Fogelberg in concert. He sat on a plain stage with a piano, a chair, and a guitar. He would move back and forth between the piano and the guitar. He had no back up band or singer; it was like sitting with him in his living room. Best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to some really good concerts.
He told a story during a concert in Austin about that song, and said it was originally pretty bawdy. He and some friends around the piano made up the song to the tune of the 1821 overture, then he cleaned up the lyrics and rewrote the music. You can still hear the melody if the 1821 overture in the first line...
Thank you for this tribute. I've been a Fogelberg fan since the 70's. I was shocked at his passing. I recently took a 1900 mile roundtrip drive to TX from SC. My USB drive has a ton of an eclectic mix of MP3s, and he is well represented. His songs helped the drive. "Power of Gold" played as I neared the Mississippi River on the drive out.
Brought a tear to my eye. I couldn’t agree with you more. He has always been one of my favorites. I own every album of his that he put out on vinyl and I listen to them over and over. Thank you so much for highlighting him. He truly was a talent.
I remember I was in high school when it came out. I heard the song and initially thought it was another bubble gum soft rock song. The thing was, when you combined the lyrics and the music together, it became a transcendent piece of art that will indeed last through the ages. This song is not just another love song, it's a song about Love Eternal. Those songs come by once in a lifetime. Thank you, Dan Fogelberg.
What a wonderful tribute to Dan Fogelberg. My memory’s begin from one of my older sister’s being a huge Jackson Browne fan and another was a huge Dan Fogelberg fan. So I was fortunate while young to hear all the great late 60’s/ early 70’s “folk” rock (ie America, Eagles, etc). Thanks for highlighting Dan’s amazing musicianship. And, as was stated, as a lyricist he was absolutely amazing. I feel if he had been only a poet, his words would have placed him among the greats of American poetry/literature. His words are Incomparable. I love everything he wrote. One of my absolute favorites that didn’t get much recognition is “The Reach” from the album.
Lifelong hard rock and metal head here, who is also a huge Fogelberg fan. Some of my favorites of Dan are: Scarecrow’s Dream, Dancing Shoes, Nether Lands, Beggar’s Game, The Lion’s Share, Sketches, Only The Heart May Know (Duet with Emmylou Harris), Gypsy Wind, of course, Leader of the Band and - a song I can’t hear without crying, since I sang it to my daughter when she was little - Run For The Roses. What an artist and what a loss for anyone with ears and a soul. R.I.P., Dan - you are so sorely missed. 💔
Really neat Scarecrow’s Dream is the first one you mentioned. I think it is one of my favorites and one of the most poetic songs of his and it’s so haunting. Of course the others are great too
@@sqfx744 - Yeah, it’s such a great song. I was so determined to learn to play it that I taught myself how to fingerpick when I was about 15. I still love singing and playing it to this day, along with many other great songs of Dan’s. Thanks for your comment. ✌🏼
@@crusheverything4449 Similarly, I’m starting to practice acoustic guitar again and right now I’m learning Someone’s been Telling You Stories. He’s got so many frickin great songs. I left another comment encouraging prof of rock to do a video on more 70s Dan. There’s just so much there that I feel is left behind after Longer, SOLS, LOTB, etc.
@@sqfx744 - That’s great that you’re playing again. Yeah, Dan’s catalog is bursting with amazing songs! I just finished a recording a cover of Beggar’s Game that I may put on iTunes. I’m really happy with how it came out andI feel that song deserves to be heard, although I must admit, I prefer Dan’s to mine. 😄
"Same Old Lang Syne" is the Dan Fogelberg that really was close to my heart. I cant think of many other songs that moved me like that song did or does. The story telling is perfect. "Heart Hotels" is my other favorite. He deserves every accolade that he can be given. Thank you for bringing him back to the masses.
You're very talented and observant. As I was listening to that verse of "Longer" I was starting to cry, and just then you said it could make a grown man cry. How could you hit that so right!? Crazy.
I was born in 1970. Was raised in a family of musicians where through their encouragement my love of music became broad. I remember being young sitting behind my dad drumming with his band Five wheel Drive playing covers of popular rock/pop classics. Then him moving into country during the 80's and also eventually playing stand up bass in bluegrass while alsos starting a sound company Cardinal Sound that would provide sound reinforcement for Bluegrass Festivals around New England for greats like Alison Krauss when she was young, Doc Watson, Jerry Rice and more. During the 70's and 80's I would always dive into our family vinyl collection to maybe find something new. there was always one album I would come across and would listen to it for hours over and over. Dan Fogelberg's Souvenirs. During the 90's I moved to Montana following the love of my life. When sadly things ended with her, Dan's music magically came back into my life when I came across his Greetings from the West release. over the next few years with my brother in our 20's, Living in the Gallatin National Forest/Bozeman out of our tent. We would play for others in the local parks and Dan's songs were favorites which was so cool to witness with how young the crowd was. Same Old Lang Syne, Make Love Stay, Leader of the Band, There's a Place in the World for a Gambler, Believe in Me, Old Tennessee, Cry in the Forest, Song from Half Mountain, Changing Horses, Souvenirs. Thank you Dan for sharing such a Timeless legacy of love and incredible song writing. You are dearly missed.
Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorite artists. He was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. It had so many good songs on it such as "Same Old Lang Syne", "Hard To Say", "Leader Of The Band", "Run For The Roses" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.
The innocent age was also my favorite Dan Fogelberg album. Old Lang Syne was probably my favorite song. It reminded me of a high school girlfriend who I ran into about 6 or 7 years after we graduated. We experienced the same nostalgic moments expressed in Old Lyng Syne. But the song really hit me hard a few years later after I heard she'd committed suicide.😢😢 To this day, I keep thinking, "Why didn't she call me! We could have worked it out! I remember playing that song over and over and crying my eyes out. So sad!🥺
I’m at my husband in Colorado when I moved there 1979. We were both huge Dan Fogelberg fans. My husband and I were married for 40 years. He died that year 2020 and we asked to have “Longer” played at the funeral service!
A quiet genius describes Dan Fogelberg in my mind. A pureness we don’t experience today. After being laid off from a previous job, I had to sell all my Fogelberg collection, something I very much miss. Thank you for this video!
I'll give you the reader's digest version. I dated a girl who had his first three albums. I learned every song I could off those albums. I ended up playing those songs live while living in Nashville. A novicuoíe player asked me to teach him how to Play his songs. We became good friends. I married his sister. His sister is the one who turned him on to Dan Fogelberg. I have a glorious Phoenix tattoo on my left arm. We've been married 32 years. Thank you Dan Fogelberg.
I saw Dan Fogelberg in 1977 at the Mississippi River Festival in Edwardsville, IL. It was my first concert. I loved the albums Souvenirs and Nether Lands. While Dan is remembered for his ballads I loved Crow, As the Raven Flies, Part of the Plan, Illinois, etc. He has been credited as an influence by such diverse artists as Garth Brooks and Myles Kennedy who called Dan a remarkable songwriter. What a tremendous loss when Dan passed. I thank you for putting this tribute to this talented musician on your channel.
Thank you for this heartfelt review of Longer and Dan Fogelberg. We really did lose a voice of the ages when he passed. Leader of The Band is another one of his songs that gets me in the heart every time I hear it, as my father was also a musician. I hope they are both playing in eternity.
I was blessed to see Dan Fogelberg twice in concert. Once at Red Rocks and once at the Pikes Peak Center. His music was the soundtrack to so many moments of my life both happy and sad. I thank you for the memories
When I was a teenager, my mom didn’t have her license so I was her chauffeur. I was more into the harder rock, but she didn’t care for it,so we compromised. Fogelberg’s music was something we both could relate too and now that she passed sometime ago,I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Dan Fogelberg. I was lucky enough to see him on his Greetings from the West Tour. He was fantastic.RIP
In 1980, "Longer" was the first song I ever heard from Dan Fogelberg. I loved the song and immediately bought his Phoenix album. He had a great string of hits in the early 80's which include 2 of my other favorites "Same Auld Lang Syne" and "Leader Of The Band." He was a great singer-songwriter and is very much missed. Wonderful tribute, professor.
Thank you for this beautiful, insightful tribute to the musical genius and the man. Dan’s passing still hurts my heart. His first album blew me away at 13 years-old. I couldn’t stop listening to it. My friends older brother found it in the record store sale bin in 1973. If you didn’t grow up in the 70s you can’t comprehend how much music was out there, with more coming out each week. Not unusual for first albums to go unnoticed. He went to U of I and knew of Dan. I was in eighth grade and because we had great radio in Chicago I had quite a record collection, including every Zeppelin album up to that year. But this record was like nothing I had ever heard. Thank you for giving Dan the respect he deserves. His career was incredible but he didn’t play the Hollywood game. One hit wonders got more attention when they passed than Dan. Gives you insight into how it all works. Celebrities who dominate aren’t the most talented. They have the best publicists. I miss Dan. I agree with you, his legacy will continue to grow. Especially now that Irving now has some control of his catalog, thanks to Dan’s wife Jean!❤😊
I have just played at least a half dozen of your Fogelberg reviews, and I find them to be very insightful, My younger brother and I grew up with the Fogelberg boys, and I know all of the back stories, He was an extremely talented man, and I miss his presence and story telling. Thanks for all that you do to keep his story alive.
"To the Morning" and the rest of his first album, "Home Free", got me through my mom's death from cancer when I was a teenager. His incredible voice could convey any emotion with beauty & tenderness or rasp and power. Amazing. I do love his earlier stuff in particular, and think that "Netherlands" may have been his masterpiece. That said, he was so prolific for so long and every single album had really solid material and excellent production values. I think many people dismiss Longer and some of the other tracks released for radio play as being shallow or simplistic. In my mind, "Longer" truly is a iconic love song, but it doesn't really begin to represent the depth & breadth of Dan's artistry. His lovely voice will stay in my heart and I'm truly grateful to have witnessed his musical gifts. Thanks so much for posting this video~
@@barbarasimon8514- I agree Nether Lands is Dan’s masterpiece, but there are incredible songs on all his albums, as you alluded to. I think the general public has the wrong impression of Dan’s music (wimpy, pedestrian) and many would change their minds if they took a deeper dive. There are wonderful treasures awaiting…
Loved Dan Fogelberg's music. Lived in Peoria, Illinois, Dan's hometown, in the mid 80's. It was near Christmas time and I was driving down W. Knoxville Ave. and it was lightly snowing. As I was going down an incline in the road "Same Old Lang Syne" was playing and the snow started turning into rain just as he was singing that verse in the song. I couldn't help but get a big grin on my face and think of Dan. We lost a great musician in Dan Fogelberg. Thank you for this tribute to Dan and bringing back such a great memory. ❤🎶🎸🎹🌈
After 17 years since Dan's death, for some reason its hitting me more now than before. I'm still saddened that he passed at such an early age. His voice, his lyrics, his music was just so good. I wish their were more musical artists like him today. I've been listening to his songs a lot lately, it brings back my teen years. My wedding song back in 1982 was Longer, just the perfect song. It must have been a good luck song, me and my wife are celebrating 42 years of marriage. God bless this musician and thank you for such great songs. Also to the Professor of Rock, I love your channel. One of the best on UA-cam. Thank You
Like what you said Garth Brooks shared about Dan Fogelberg : he lifted my heart with scry song he sang. The Leader Of The Band really struck me hard. Since I didn't follow in my father's footsteps, I feel I missed out on my father's love. My father passed, and I didn't get the chance to tell him I loved him back. Thank you for all you do. I can't offer much, I'm a totally disabled veteran, and trying to make things work out. All the best, Dave
One of my absolute favorite artists. I was in college when Dan rose to fame. A friend asked me to sing Longer for her 1980 wedding. My Mom was a fan, too. I was teary through this whole presentation. Thank you for honoring him.
Doc , seriously, those of us who lived in this time will never disagree . If you had a serious girlfriend in this period of time you would have listened to his songs . Thanks for the video
I saw Dan Fogelberg when he was promoting his Souvenirs album. I fell in love with him as he walked out on stage. That beautiful long hair of his! Then he started singing and I was hooked. I'm still so sad that he passed away. 😢 Thanks, Dan, for the joy you gave us.❤
In 1975, in a record store looking for a present for a girlfriend, I found “Souvenirs” and promptly shoplifted it. I was 16 with an attitude, but decided to listen to it first in case it was crap. My gf never got that present. After intense listening for a week, I went back and sheepishly paid for the darn thing. Dan’s voice redirected my attitude towards music and singing. Thank you Dan. Sorry Carol.
There are so many memorable songs on his albums. There are the popular ones of course, but they all are part of the Dan Fogelberg legend and mystique. The hidden gems resonated with me as much as the popular hits. They were stories to be told to the listeners who were totally dedicated to Dan's artistry. I made sure I included his music in the rock and roll history class that I used to teach to my 8th grade students just for the sheer beauty of his lyrics. When he died, I was left to wonder what beautiful songs were left unwritten. I miss him.
Thank you for this wonderful tribute. One of my absolute favorite artists. Shamefully underrated. I discovered him in college when I heard Souvenirs. Later, I got to see him live with Tim Weisberg and Joe Walsh at the Santa Barbara Bowl. I’ll never forget it. I love everything he did, but Leader of the Band and There’s a Place in the World for a Gambler still grab my heart and soul with the same intensity as they did on the day I first heard them. Rest In Peace, Dan Fogelberg.
I grew up with Dan Fogelbergs music. I had every album, cassette and later CD of his music! I had the privilege of seeing him in concert twice. His music changed my life! Thanks for this fantastic tribute show!
Brother, you got me choked up with just a few seconds of "Longer". Immediately it was 1979 for me again. Im 65 now, and you're right, Dan was truly the man! So glad he didn't go with Jimmy Messina. We never would have had Loggins & Messina and for Dan Fogelberg we never would have known his full potential in the time we had to enjoy that. Thank you for this particular post!! God bless!
I meant to also say, thank you, Adam, for keeping Dan’s memory and music alive and, perhaps best of all, turning some younger people on to his incredible talents. He left a rich legacy of amazing, timeless songs that deserve to be heard. 🙏🏼
I searched, found and bought a 45 of his. My favorite song of his... "Leader of the band" going to go give it a listen rite now. And say a silent thank you to Mr. Fogelberg
I was in college when I heard the name Dan Fogelberg but never heard his music. I decided to buy the Captured Angel album and fell in love with his music and lyrics. After that I bought Souvenirs which I just loved. Then I went back to his first album. I found out that Dan and I were born on the same day. I was definitely a fan, although I never had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. I was so sad when I learned he had passed. His music lives on in my heart always. Thank you, Professor, for this.
The moment I heard longer on the radio, I was hooked! At one time I had his album Netherlands on vinyl, cassette and 8-track so I could take him everywhere! I miss him and I demand that the Rock and Roll Hall of fame puts him in where he belongs!
Thank you for covering Dan Fogelberg. You don't know how much his music means to me. Innocent Age was truly the culmination of everything GREAT about Dan.
I had the great pleasure of seeing Dan Fogelberg live at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland, Florida in the early 1980's. We bought our tickets late so ended up in the "nose bleed" section way in the back. Well, there are NO bad seats when you go to one of his concerts. The sound was crystal clear and perfect. He projected all the way back to us in the cheap seats and then some. One of THE best concerts I've ever seen. Very saddened when he passed. Thanks for the beautiful tribute.
I had the great good fortune of seeing Dan do a solo show in 1977 at the Anaheim Convention Center. One of my memories of that night was him doing Netherlands at the piano by himself. It has always struck me that, the major influence he had on music during his lifetime has been sadly overlooked and forgotten, and I thank you Professor, for reminding all who may have forgotten, what an incredibly talented and kind man Dan Fogelberg was. Btw, my favorite album by him is Netherlands, and my favorite song is Scarecrows Dreams. RIP Dan.
I first heard Dan's Nether Lands at a high school graduation in 1979. The seniors walked out to the song and took their seats as it played. It was a seminal experience for them, and for me. So much life ahead. And Dan conveyed the feeling of that perfectly with the lyric, the music, and voice he put to that song. Thanks, Professor, for this segment on Dan. You knocked it out of the park again.
I have loved Dan Fogelberg‘s music for 40+ years. In fact, I was blessed to sing Longer at a relatives wedding many years ago. There’s not a song that he did that I didn’t like and most I loved. I’ve told people since I first came across his music that he is my all-time favorite artist because of his fabulous voice, his incredible guitar and piano playing, and being one of the best lyricists ever.
Wow, I saw that man in Williamsburg, VA in a small auditorium. He showed up with nothing but a Piano and a Guitar. That was the best money I ever spent on Entertainment in my 67 years. That man was phenomenal!
Dan Fogelberg got me through my teen years. He was so, so talented. I loved his voice and his heart. Beautiful music from a beautiful human 😍 being.😢😢😢
I sang this song at several weddings when I was in high school (1980-1982). It was always an honor to do so. I want to thank you for saying all the kind and beautiful words in tribute to Dan Fogelberg. I believe his playing, singing and writing will stand the test of time. He is missed so much. I loved his ability to put into the lyrics what I couldn't begin to say. Indeed, God bless you, Mr. Fogelberg. ❤❤
A great artist, and person.I had the pleasure of seeing one of his shows, and said hello during the intermission. It was just him on piano and guitar. You are sorely missed Dan.😢
Dan Fogelberg’s music remains some of the most heartfelt music ever written. I had the privilege of seeing him a number of times, but, the performance I remember best was at the West Urey Music Fair- a theater in the round with a rotating stage. He casually commented…”I now know how it feels to be in a microwave”. Don’t ask me why, but that quip stuck with me. He was so passionate about his music!
I saw Dan at a small venue in the early '70s, maybe 30 people in attendance, and I recognized his talent immediately. It was the best $5 I ever spent. When my father died, I listened to "Leader of the Band" over and over. Such a wordsmith and a master of melody.

I’m not sure there’s anyone else in America who could do a 20 minute video about Dan Fogelberg and capture his essence the way you can. You have truly earned the moniker “Professor of Rock”!
Wow! Thanks!
@@ProfessorofRock I agree. I so appreciate your show today.
@@ProfessorofRock not going to lie, this is not the first video of yours that I've had a good cry over. thanks.
Longer is an ok song. Always thought it was the equivalent of a Jr. High love note. Preferred Same Old Lang Syne, a grownup song about grownup lives. Do agree though that his music is phenomenal.
Adam is the only one to watch if you want to know about music... The only one! Everyone I have shown his channel to is hooked.
I had the absolute honor of meeting Dan Fogelberg back in the early '90s. He was as genuine and nice as I ever thought he might be. 💜
My girlfriend and I started listening to Fogelberg in the 70's and went to a few of his concerts. We've been together 47 years and still enjoy listening to him. Another artist who left us much too soon. RIP Dan Fogelberg. Your music will live on forever.
We are right in your wake - saw Dan at the Schaeffer Music fesival in Centra lpark backed by Fool'sGold, blew me away. Loved him since.
He needs to be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame !!!

🙂 *Your sentiment is good & true; the hall of lame/shame doesn't have any more legitimacy than anyone in this comment section. The most rock n roll thing any artist can do is to tell them they just don't want their bogus "award" & to phük off. (few have)*
*My personal opinion is that a bowling trophy sitting in YOUR living room with Dan's name scratched on it is every bit as good as the hall.

Longer is one of those songs my mom would turn up on the radio back in the early 80’s. I just turned 50 and I’m still playing his amazing catalog.
My favorite song of Dan Fogelberg is 'Leader of the Band'. My father passed away a while back. Every year on his birthday I light a candle and play 'Leader of the Band', it makes me feel close to him again.
Every bit the equal of Longer, that one’s my favorite too. (And I never really had a relationship with my father.)
I still miss him😢
That's really neat.
Loved Dan Fogelberg growing up. My favorite is Old Lang Syne...still stops me in my tracks today. "Met my old lover at the grocery store". Who CAN'T relate to that??? RIP Dan & thanks for the memories Professor ❤
The visuals that Old Lang syne conjures makes me tear everytime. The last line "snow turned to rain" gets me everytime"

Even the burliest of alpha males would lose it listening to these songs.
It's a heartbreaker. And that sax solo at the end! Tears every time.
Just wrote a comment how the song stops me in my tracks! Saw yours and remember one new yrs eve being outside in the car in front of a grocery store..raining, cold and this song came on.... completely torn up. Prolly 30 yrs ago.
Longer was our wedding song in 1981, I just knew the first time I heard it. Our anniversary is in 3 days, 43 years....thank you Dan.
Ours also 1980. Still play it every anniversary, 44 years together this past April.
It was in my 1981 wedding too.
Ours also in 1980. 50 years together, 44 married.
She probably told her friends to never take her there again. What a 5-letter word. Dodged a bullet there, son... 🤣
That was a moment. Thanks for sharing it.
Sounds like you probably should have sang "Old lang syne" LOL...
That's amazing. You made the song come true!
40 years next year congrats

That's beautiful! ❤
God bless you, as well. my friend.

Glad to hear you are in remission. 🎉
@@clintonjohnston2970 Damn autocorrect. You clearly have no compassion for someone with the big C. No one would make it up on purpose.
I saw Dan and Tim at a concert in 1978/79 at Purdue University. To this day his beautiful songs take me back to great times.
I loved Dan Fogelberg’s music. The Leader of the Band is one of the greatest father/son songs ever written
Yes
Was about his father.
Ugh! I waited the whole video for Adam to talk about Leader of the Band and he never did. Sheesh! Way too much gooey praise for Longer. Leader and his relationship with his Dad would have been much more interesting to delve into.
I can't keep from crying every time I hear "Leader of the Band." Truly one of the most powerful, poignant songs ever written.
Run for the Roses and his gift to New Year Eve,those two events, have never been the same, for me.
Incredible.
Very cool!
That is so cool! Dynamic Dan!
Wow. Wish that side of him had made it onto the charts.
Wow I wonder is there any recordings of Dan playing the blues
@@JamesJones-zt2yx Yeah he was incredible. You can see some of his live blues on YT. Completely different and authentic.
My friend’s family was very close friends with Dan’s family back in Illinois, and When she got married, Dan sang this song at her wedding. I wasn’t there, but I have seen the wedding videos.

"Illinois"! Another gorgeous song.
@@playhooky I grew up just outside Chillicothe.
My mom's family is very musical. Gramps played with Marty Robbins one night, mom had a scholarship to Peabody back in the early 60's. They both loved Dan Fogelberg's tenor. There was just a purity to it, like a Chuck Berry song: "How else would you do that?"
For me THE Dan Fogelberg song was "Same Old Lang Syne". The pathos flows out throughout the song. The lyrics are like painting a picture with words. You can see them sitting in the car, snow falling. Just gorgeous...

What a beautiful story and memory. Love it.
Those solo acoustics of Dan were magical. You were probably the second or third audience to hear Same Old Lang Syne. Thank you for sharing your story!
THIS BROTHER CERTAINLY GETS DAN FOGELBERG’S HEART. LEADER OF THE BAND MAKES ME CRY TO THIS DAY. EXCELLENT VIDEO ADAM.
I lost my husband to a glioblastoma in 2022. My thoughts are with you.
Sorry for your loss. Lost a good friend to the same thing.
Years ago I had the incredible opportunity to see Dan play in Parkwest Utah. It was just him, his guitar, and grand piano. I was completely mesmerized. He was a master musician, singer/songwriter. Terribly sad he is gone. The world is missing out, that's for sure.

I say without an ounce of shame - I cried when I heard Dan had passed. Absolutely love his music. Thanks for the tribute Professor.
Without a doubt one of the best, most beautiful, male voices ever. He possessed clarity, control and conviction in every song he sang.
I always thought of him as the male equivalent to Karen Carpenter - what a duet that would have made‼️
RIP Dan and Karen. The world is much more beautiful having your incredible talents still live on.
For sure. Good comment.

Very bittersweet memories…the same thing happened to me.

So sad!🥺
He was multitalented!
Thanks for sharing. a
Amazing singer and lyricist.
Run for the Roses
@@catpaladin1. Kentucky girl here, that’s one of my favorites. Plays every year at the Derby 🐎
Every time someone mentions their taste in music, I always respond with, "Dan Fogelberg is my all-time favorite."
Man, I have been listening to him since the 70's. Amazing voice. His songs were amazing. High Country Snow is my favorite album by him.
Thank You
How has it been that long. How the years fly
Sometimes it’s too hard to listen. Miss him💕
Like what you said Garth Brooks shared about Dan Fogelberg : he lifted my heart with scry song he sang.
Dan fogelberg is my favorite artists of all time I was so sad when he died.
Leader of the Band. Song that has always stayed with me because of my father. Man was singing Gods words
Longer catches my heart. Such a perfect song! All of Dan Fogelberg's music is wonderful and beautiful. Dan, you are missed! 😢❤
I saw Dan Fogelberg when he was promoting his Souvenirs album. I fell in love with him as he walked out on stage. That beautiful long hair of his! Then he started singing and I was hooked. I'm still so sad that he passed away. 😢
Thanks, Dan, for the joy you gave us.❤
Twin Sons of Different Mothers finally made me a fan for life. So glad his music and voice carry on and on.
👏👏👏
Great story (glad you’re still around to tells)
Is Carol still in your life?
😎
Wonderfully wholesome story illustrating the enormous power of art.
💜💜💜💜
Wow you sound like a dreamboat.
@@marksneddon3709Yes I’d like to know too! It’s a great story. The power of true art! And I might add… Honesty. Albeit delayed 😂
The day will come Mr Professor of Rock, that you will stand before Dan, and verbally say to him, what you just got done saying to us.
Fogelberg
Agree 100% - thanks for the tribute - Dan's music had a great impact on my life - probably under my top 4 artists ever.
You described this perfectly. Longer is beautiful lyric poetry.
"Higher than any bird ever flew" is the line I like. 🕊
Yes! Thank you! Have a great Monday Catherine!
This should be taught in an English metaphors lesson.
Fogelberg was one of the most poetic lyricists I've ever heard.
RIP Dan.
Dancing Shoes was also one of my favorite songs. Loved Nether Lands too.
I listened to him before he was famous and loved him. My college roommate had all his albums then, 1974-75.
That voice is woven into the fabric of the sails of yacht rock. Leader of the band always gets me. 😭 Thank for another great lesson! 🎩🔮🖤🕊️
Glad you enjoyed it. Love that!
Ditto. Leader of the Band and Longer are my top 2 favorites from him.
Especially since Leader of The Band was about his father.
One of my favorite artists of all time. Great job on this story/tribute.
I saw Dan at a small venue in the early '70s, maybe 30 people in attendance, and I recognized his talent immediately. It was the best $5 I ever spent. When my father died, I listened to "Leader of the Band" over and over. Such a wordsmith and a master of melody.
Dan Fogelberg was one of a kind. So talented and what a voice!
