  • COMING up the story of the #1 1985 smash Sussudio by Phil Collins. Based on a made-up word…. One that just fell out of Phil’s mouth while he was singing. Even Phil had no idea what it meant. Unable to think of anything better, Collins decided to just make up a meaning. But as weird as it is, this song completely captivated listeners. However, as Sussudio started gaining traction as part of Phil Collin’s 1985 blockbuster album No Jacket Required, it also stirred up controversy. Critics noticed that its central riff was nearly a carbon copy of another huge hit from a few years earlier. 1999 by Prince. And not long after, Phil Collins confessed it was a rip-off job. But the question was “to what degree?” The parallels were unmistakable. But were they enough to nail Phil Collins for plagiarism? Find out… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another installment of our series ‘Career Suicide.’ In this show where we break down a song or album that took a massive risk. And maybe the gamble paid off. Or maybe it was a complete disaster. In this show, it could go either way. But whatever the outcome, it’s a guaranteed great story. Today we’re featuring a musician who by his own admission intentionally ripped off another artist’s iconic track and made it a smash… From the 1980s hit-making machine, it Phil Collins with his third studio album No Jacket Required and Sussudio.
So what song did he rip off? If you don’t already know, make your guess down in the comments. And we’ll see if you get it right. So when No Jacket Required dropped on February 18, 1985, Phil Collins was already well on his way to dominating the 80s. The two-headed monster of solo-Phil and Genesis-Phil would kick out a slew of hits throughout the neon decade. We’re talking songs like In the Air Tonight, Invisible Touch, Against All Odds, and That’s All. But that wasn’t all… Year after year, it seemed like you couldn’t turn the radio dial without hearing Phil do his thing and then do it again. Which I loved since Phil’s a favorite.
In the midst of all this success, No Jacket Required became the high-water mark of Phil’s solo career. No Jacket was his first #1 album in the US and would stay on top for 7 weeks. Internationally, it reached #6 in France, #5 in Finland, #4 in Japan and Italy, and get this, #1 in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Yeah, not a bad showing at all. No Jacket Required also scored Collins the 1985 Grammy for Album of the Year. And in 1986 it received two American Music Award nominations for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Album back when people actually watched and cared about those shows. And at the Brit Awards it received two more awards, one for British Album of the Year and another for Best British Male Solo Artist.

The dad straight up told me that they couldn't agree on a name for her and had "agreed" to call her that if they couldn't come up with anything good. Surely, they thought, THAT alternative will make them come up with something they can both like. Guess not.

"No Jacket Required" always make me think of a memory from my childhood. I had gotten it as part of the famous Columbia House "12 albums for a penny" offer. So the day I got my tapes, I listened to them all and, of course, being a kid I did not put the tapes back into their cases; I just left them laid out on the shelves where the stereo tape player was.
My mom later came into the room and started to fuss at me and my sister about leaving a mess and not taking care of the tapes because we did not put them back into the cases. Me and my sister were just standing there, silent, being fussed at. My mom started to put some tapes in their cases and then grabbed the Phil Collins tape and said "What's this mean, 'No Jacket Required'?! This tape doesn't need a case? Why doesn't the tape need a case! This tape came with no case?!" LOL
Me and my sister just started laughing so hard, reminded me of "Who's on First". LOL

So it was Hotel California all the way, it survived. By the way, the truck was changed from stick to auto transmission but the clutch pedal was still there connected to nothing . So I “played” the drum pedal all the way. I still really cant listen to that album, still burned out on it after all these years. It was 1978!

I actually hated that song and video on MTV. It was SO popular in the day, played everywhere, yet it was like fingernails down a chalkboard (for those who remember what a chalkboard was).
I saw the interview with Phil when he was asked "What does it mean?" and he replied that often songwriters will use a made-up word as a placeholder until they could find a better or proper word to put it in place... but he couldn't figure out an actual word to replace that filler word, so it became "Sussudio". He then came up with some hokey explanation.
I think it was just overplayed on the radio and MTV that got me to hate that song. I love almost all Phil Collins songs... but not "Sussudio".

Made up words in songs couldn't be complete without:
Medallions, featuring the lead voice of Vernon Green, recorded a 1954 R&B; hit called “The Letter.” During Green’s unintentionally hilarious recitation in the middle of the song, he murmured: “Oh my darling, let me whisper sweet words of pismatality and discuss the pulpitudes of love, and put ‘em in together and what do you have? Matrimony.
Now it's not done yet Steve Miller, who was a student of old music, but misheard the lyric and wrote the Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.” which included the line “Pompatus of Love”

what was it Tyler Durden said? "the ability to let that which does not matter truly slide" it's just the ability to be confident all the time and adapt to changing conditions...when others learn they've been had it no longer matters cus they've been motivated out of their ruts [in the movie's fiction, IRL it's the simple slight of hand, what the eyes see and the mind believes]

I’m a fan of Phil’s and a lifetime drummer. I went with 2 other drummers to see Phil play at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby PA, outside of Philly in the 80’s. I was bummed how little he played the drums. When in the Air Tonight was played it started with the tour drummer and Phil singing from the back of the auditorium. Then the stage lights were dimmed and during the big drum solo Phil was on the kit. That was magic.
Back to Sussudio I was a Mobile DJ in the 80’s and also a guy who mad up my own words to songs long before Weird Al. My words were “Sue Sue Sue Your Ass” as in I’ll Sue you, not the girl’s name.
Thanks Professor for another insightful one. I was waiting for where the song 1999 topped out at in the year 1999 or was it not re-released? It was on constant rotation.

As for Prince, he had a song that (Purple Rain) sounded very close to a Journey song (Faithfully) and had to call Journey and play the song to get approval from Journey. So in turn I say both artists were “influenced” by another song and leave it at that.

@@ProfessorofRock I was just commenting on this in a recent Rick Beato video. There's a clear difference between nonsense words thrown into otherwise meaningful lyrics, like Doo Wah Diddy Diddy or the Police's De Doo Doo Doo, De Da Da Da, or Da Doo Ron Ron, and really strange, lyrics with vague or little meaning. In that respect, a lot of songs are rather vague, like Phil's In The Air Tonight. But my favorite for nonsense would be ZZ Top's Sleeping Bag. Yes, the lyrics are all more or less intelligible, but they not really *saying* anything!
Also, why are song lyrics always supposed to rhyme? It's music, not poetry. A good rhyming scheme might make a song more catchy and "sing-songy", but really, all the lyrics have to do is fit the melody.

_"Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your a**hole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite."_

This song annoyed my mother so much when I was a kid that I recorded it off the radio and used to blast it from my room whenever we got into an argument. 40 years later, she's visiting with me today, and I just showed her this Prof piece . . . and she became just as irritable as ever 😂

Great content as always. Here’s another. If you remember taping a baseball card to your bicycle spokes to get a motorcycle sound, you’ll love this channel.

I remember when I first heard "Sussudio" on the radio. While I've always enjoyed Phil Collins music and liked the song, I had no idea what Sussudio meant. I looked it up in the dictionary and couldn't find it. I figured it was a made-up word (which there are many of those songs throughout rock history). I'm glad to finally get the inside story behind this song.. Musically, I can definitely hear some similarities between Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Prince's "1999".

When this record came out, I was in the military stationed in Japan which was my first duty station out MOS school. I remember getting this record on CD as back then, Japan had a lot of new records going on CD before the US got them. I bought my first CD player while stationed in Iwakuni, Japan. Sus was not my favorite song off the album. Too much of a dance song for me. Long Long Way To Go was one of my favorites which was a duet with Sting. Great song. Inside Out and Take Me Home are also fantastic tracks from the album. This album brings back memories of my time in Japan which was a year-long deployment. I loved my time there. Thanks for this in-depth review of the song. I had no idea what the title meant. Now I know it was completely made up word by Mr. Collins.

I read once that Phil Collins’s was open about taking inspiration from Prince’s “1999”. Also, he said he recorded it in the Stu-stu-studio…
