  • Coming up the story of one of the greatest #1 hit singalongs of the late 80s, Every Rose Has It’s Thorn… From Poison’s hard rock frontman Bret Michaels who was absolutely devastated.… It wasn’t the Greek tragedy that the singer made it out to be, but the revelation of a cheating girlfriend left this struggling rock icon reeling with hurt & betrayal. Michaels drowned his sorrow at the laundromat at 3 AM with his acoustic guitar and out fell this perfect 80s power ballad… Even though the label warned the band not to release it because it would kill their budding career, they proved the label wrong once again… Next, the story behind a proverb that became the heartbreak anthem of its time on Professor of Rock.

Stick around, because this is one of the coolest stories behind a song that I’ve ever heard…
“Every Rose has its thorn,” is a proverb meant to remind us that nothing is perfect…. Even one of the Earth's most beautiful flowers, the rose, is not without blemish. For Bret Michaels, the lead vocalist & lyricist for the band Poison, the adage was a metaphor for the contrasts facing the life of a rock star, and the title he chose for a #1 pop song he wrote back in 1987.
Bret Michaels was born in Butler, Pennsylvania. On his birth certificate, “Michael” is his middle name, but Bret claims that his parents originally intended on giving him the middle name “Maverick” after the title character- played by James Garner, in the popular TV Western series of the same name.
Bret was a 6th grader when he formed his first band called Lazer- covering songs by Aerosmith & Kiss. When he was 16, Michaels met Rikki Rockett, and the two assembled the Spectres - enlisting bassist Bobby Dall & lead guitarist Matt Smith a short time later, and changed their name to Paris in ’83. Paris entered the Miller High Life ‘Rags to Riches’ battle of the bands contest but came in 2nd place to a New Wave styled band called the Sharks. The Sharks, let’s talk about them for a second because it’s pretty interesting.
The Sharks got a record deal for winning the contest, and for a few years, it looked like they would quite literally rise from ‘rags to riches.’ The Sharks won MTV’s Basement Competition a year after the contest in ’85, but the largest margin in the history of the competition, leading to a four-EP contract with Elektra Records.
The first EP was titled A Black and White World, and it featured the single “Only Time Will Tell.” The clip for “Only Time Will Tell” was the 2nd ‘most requested video’ during MTV’s Top 10 countdown for 2 straight weeks in 88, but it wasn’t long until The Sharks fortunes sank.

It's 1987. I'm 17, and my first proper girlfriend has a Fisher record system and I hear Def Leppard for the first time. I'm now hooked on Rock music . Guns N Roses, Metallica, amongst many others . My girlfriend and I would listen to Every Rose has its Thorn unknowing what our future would hold . The relationship ended but the words and memories from all those years ago still play in my head and I'm transported back to the 80s. Now a grown man I listen to those lyrics, and in my mind, I'm 17 again.

I’m friends with Tracy, (the inspiration for this song). We met in 1985 when we were teens and she was my 16 year old next-door-neighbor in a condo in Tustin, California.
She was gorgeous, extremely nice and already dating Bret at the time. She used to drive a piece of crap little red car and my friend and I regularly kept her car running so she could drive up to Hollywood to see Bret, bring him and his band-mates food and cheer him on. She adored Bret and only had eyes for him, constantly telling everyone how talented he was and how he and his band were going to be huge one day.
When Poison’s album was released in May of 1986 they were still unknown outside of LA, but they started getting airplay on KNAC, the heavy metal station of SoCal at the time.
Shortly after their album was released they opened for a Japanese heavy metal band called Loudness at a little former movie theater called the Pomona Valley Auditorium on August 3, 1986. The co-opening band was another that time unknown band called Cinderella.
(There’s a crazy story about attending that night, but I’ll save that for another time.)
Back to Tracy, she wasn’t a stripper when she met Bret, she was just a teenage high school girl from Orange County. In her defense, according to Tracy, she was totally devoted to Bret for years and only cheated on him when she found out from a “friend of Bret’s” rival band guy that Bret, (the love of her life), was cheating on her regularly while touring the US. The mystery person who told her used her moment of weakness when she was heartbroken, crying and devastated, to make his move on her. That’s the night Bret called from the laundromat in Texas.
I know who the mystery guy is, but it’s not my place to say.
Yes, Bret was hurt and it inspired him to write a timeless song of heartbreak. But Tracy was totally faithful to him until she reacted, when she had her own heart shattered at the news of Bret’s regular infidelity behind her back.
Bret was the love of Tracy’s life and I believe he felt the same about her.
Bad things happen sometimes, but in this case, the world could relate to Bret and Tracy’s deeply personal heartache.

      @le_th_ 2 місяці тому +26

It is very kind of you to defend a teenage girl's honor, and it shows that you are a true friend, even all these years later.
Men who seek fame are often highly narcissistic (seeking fame give them the public admiration they crave) and narcissists are very often (not always) serial philanderers, but will whine, play the victim, and cry foul when someone cheats on them once because their uber fragile ego can't handle a dose of the medicine they so often dish out to others.
Now, if it's Tommy Lee who told her Bret was cheating, he's a damn sociopath (that is not hyperbole) that will say and do anything to manipulate others so it could be untrue. In fact, that is exactly the kind of thing a sociopath will make up just so they can swoop in and prey on the person's heartbroken vulnerability. That is right up Tommy Lee's alley. I digress...
You are a good man to not only help keep her car running when she was likely too young to have much money for repairs, but also to post more of the story you know, first hand, to help defend her honor since few would likely believe her side of the story (unfortunate, but true).
Wishing you much contentment in life~

@@le_th_ thank you for your kind words. Yes, Tracy is a genuinely kind and good person, but The Professor’s narrative, to label her as “a stripper”, diminishes her to a cardboard cutout. She was beautiful, it was the 80s and she was dating Bret Michaels. Being scantily clad made more money than being a waitress, and she was always devoted and faithful to Bret. But again, she was a high school girl when she met him.
The mystery guy wasn’t Tommy Lee. I met Tommy a couple of times in the 80s. He now gets a bad rap for his shenanigans, but again, he was a kid caught in a whirlwind in the 80s when Motley became one of the biggest bands in the world. Looking back, the drugs and debauchery of the 80s was horrendous, but it was normal and glamorized then. Again, horrendous and shocking by today’s standards, and not my cup of tea, even then, but it was a different time.

I knew I didn't have many shots. But when I played "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" for him, he loved it. He asked who the singer was. My dad said, "I think he's going to go far." Would they have overheard Bret writing "Every Rose" and wondered something like, "What does he think he's doing?" That sort of thing has happened. I remember buying "Look What The Cat Dragged In" and really liking it. So, by the time "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and their 2nd album came out, I was already a solid fan. This song lifted the band to another level and gained them a TON more fans. One of my all-time favorite power ballads of all-time. Great to see Poison get some love today! :)

He almost got his ass kicked by my very large construction worker friend for hitting on his girlfriend right there in front of me and my friend. Slash came over and defused the situation, moving a drunken Axel (before he even played) on, chilled us out, bought us all drinks, and chatted with us briefly. Slash was a really good guy. Probably still is. Axel was (and surely still is) a complete a**hat. Good band though, I gotta give that to them, grudgingly. (I was doing punk rock in those days, hahaha.)
