Guitarist ADMITTED to RIVAL BAND That He RIPPED OFF Their Song For His 70s Classic-Professor of Rock

- Coming up… Another helping from Two of rock and roll’s greatest storytellers. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman wrote the biggest 60s and 70s hits when they were part of the Guess Who...They had already had a couple of hits with These Eyes and Laughing when they released a monster record in the early 70s American Woman that included two #1 hits and a top 5. They were American Woman and No Sugar Tonight and No Time. Randy Bachman wrote a dear john letter to his girlfriend and decided that it might work as a song so he put one of the most recognizable guitar licks to it that he admits he lifted from another band of the time. The story of a 70s rock standard is told by two legends next as well as a run-in with a legend when he was a kid next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Stories and history you won’t find anywhere else. Today we’ve got the tried and true, one of the best storytelling duos of the rock era on a classic song that we all know by heart. It’s Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman formerly of the Guess Who… the vocalist and guitarist who wrote some of the greatest classics of their time and were almost vastly underrated.
It’s the story of their top 5 70s smash No Time.
It came from their classic 1970 album American Woman. It’s such an iconic riff. The song started out as a Dear John Letter also we get the story of how an unplanned jam session that the band was riffing on to pass the time in between songs at their live show became the impetus for the classic record. We also get an amazing story about Randy’s meeting with destiny.. when he met a trailblazer as a young kid and the impact it had on him as a guitarist. Always entertaining with these guys. Let’s get into it.
How crazy is it that Burton Cummings who’s one of the greatest rock singers ever and Randy Bachman who is the only rocker besides Paul McCartney to have a #1 hit with two different bands are not in the rock hall of fame? Word on the street is that The man behind the rock halls scheme hates them and along with Grand Funk Railroad, Motley Crue, and Phil Collins will never let them be inducted. It’s insane.
Make sure to Leave us a comment about this double-sided song and about the Guess Who with the great duo of singer Burton Cumming, quite possibly the most underappreciated singers of the 70s, and Randy Bachman who would go on to form another multiplatinum juggernaut in Bachman Tuners Overdrive or BTO for short… What are your memories of these songs and bands? - Розваги
Poll: What is your pick for the greatest guitar solo EVER?
Allen Collins - Free Bird
Alex Lifeson - La Villa Strangiato (& any other Rush song)
Jimi Hendrix “All Along The Watchtower"
Anything by Neil Schon for Journey, Hardline and Bad English.
I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You by Alan Parsons Project is a most underrated one, and Stairway to Heaven gives me goosebumps. 2112 has loads of good ones to! ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man is Phenomenal! Hard to Pick!
UFO - Rock Bottom live Strangers In The Night
These guys were pure gold classic rock. What a career and legacy they have. You just don't hear music like this anymore.
Amen!
Not called classic rock back then.
@@cs292 - 😄 My kids used to call it old man music, but they're started to come around, to develop more of an appreciation for classic rock.
I never get sick of the Guess Who or BTO.
Back in the 80s my cousin was in Seattle at a record store and mr Bachman was doing a promotion there! My cousin got several cds a couple records and signed all of them! The nicest guy ever! The guess who is the best!!
I love these two guys. Randy Bachman especially is all personality. Your interviews with him are always so awesome!
Thanks!
He’s a guy I’d love to hang out with.
I agree. His reference to the Vietnam War and the term "killing floor" was probably true for the period of the late '60's, however the term has been used for decades before that by blues musicians who also needed day gigs to get by. Those gigs were often in slaughterhouses. Kill floors are where the animals are killed and processing begins.
@@nankerphelge37710:39
I love No Time, but No Sugar Tonight is right up there.
Both are classics!
@@ProfessorofRock it’s unfortunate these two don’t have the pushy fan base Rush had to push them through. Trust me, as one, I’m always saying how these two definitely deserve to be in any Music HoF.
My top 3: Undun, No Time, No Sugar Tonight
Prof, I think starting a Hall of Fame for this channel is a must, cause those guys in Cleveland don’t know what the hell they’re doin! I mean how in the hell are these two not in!!!
the People's Hall! LEt's do it!
@@ProfessorofRockhell ya!! 🤠🤘🤘
Great idea!
BRILLIANT!
They're in the Canadian Hall. And have a star on our Walk of fame. Most of the best bands in that Era came from Canada.
No Time has always been my favorite Guess Who song. So many great songs. Of course, here in Canada they’re revered but seem to be underrated elsewhere.
Canada gets it right! Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Bryan Adams, Rush, etc.
I can't speak for other Americans but I love the Guess Who and BTO! 💜 Randy is awesome!
The disrespect shown to Canadian Rock Artists & Bands by the Hall of Fame is palpable and sickening. While artists from genres outside of traditional rock music get their accolades, Canadian artists are left forgotten and treated like second class acts.
At least they don't have to live in Cleveland.
Well, aside from Rush. But the RRHOF have no standards at all.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 and it still took until 2013 for Rush to get inducted. Eminem, Missy Elliot, Lionel Richie & Jay-Z along with Willie & Dolly but no TGW/BTO, no Bryan Adams, no Gordon Lightfoot, just to name a few Canadians...
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980The Band and Rush
@@adellis24 Yeah, even then Rush should have been inducted years earlier. In fact there are only FIVE Canadian artists in the Hall of Shame right now. FIVE.
Great interview! I've always enjoyed Randy Bachman's performing and appreciated his song writing. But he is also a FASCINATING story-teller. If he hadn't gotten into music, I could see him being every student's favorite teacher in school. He explains everything so well and makes it interesting.
He has a gift for sure.
Just take what Randy says with a grain of salt, he famous for embellishing stories
I could DEFINITELY see him as my history teacher.
“Those actually aren’t bad lyrics…” Most understated comment of the week. What a cool couple of guys!
Randy is always full of great stories but that Les Paul story is epic! Totally agree that Burton is one of the finest voices in rock, not to mention a great pianist. What a team they made, and what a breeding ground for musical talent Winnipeg turned out to be. Burton often posts the original handwritten lyrics to these iconic from back in the day on his fan page. He's kept everything from those days. Great segment, Adam!
Thanks Robster. This one's for you...
His 'juke box hero' moment without the rain, lol
Burton also does impressions, this is one of his best ones.

@@Siloguy Hilarious!
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are such a great interview. Love it when you have them on! 🎵🎶🎵
Thanks for listening!
I cannot get enough of them!
One of the best songs writing duos ever. Randy always had great riffs and great tone.
Nothing better than Burton and Randy.
True Canadian treasures. I can't imagine what rock 'n roll would be like without them and their influence. The memories and pure joy that their music brings back to those of us who experienced them from the beginning are unmeasurable. We are so very proud of them. 🎸🎶🎸
An injustice by the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.
Why am I not surprised?!?!
No kidding.
Because they suck!
Burton Cummings can sing as good as Randy can play the guitar. Great team.
Yes indeed.
No Time is a great track. It's great to sing these lyrics, "No time, no time, I got no time "
The artwork on that Buffalo Springfield record cover is beautiful! 😊
It’s a true earworm.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 😊
Loved this music so much,No time,American Woman,so good..schooldays..epic. I hear the music and go straight back to my schooldays.
The 70s were such amazing times.
As a proud 🇨🇦 I really appreciate how much love POF gives our great artists - Bryan Adams, Neil Young, BTO, Gordon, Loverboy etc. This is my go to channel to start the day. Thank you!
Uh.... April Wine?
@@c.e.anderson558 TRIUMPH? Kim Mitchell?
@@c.e.anderson558 They fall somewhere BELOW The Guess Who, Triumph, and Jeff Healey band. I would rank them higher than that horrific screeching of Rush though...LOL
Canada the beautiful!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 The Great White North...Bob and Doug McKenzie.
The bigger point is that BTO and The Guess Who both from Winnipeg Manitoba which is a prairie town in the middle of nowhere became rock superstars and that Jann Wenner and Rock Hall of Fame ignore these amazing success stories. Even to this day with only Gary Peterson, drummer, remaining the Guess Who recently appeared at a town celebration and 5,000 came! How can The Guess Who and BTO still be ignored by Jann Wenner and the Rock Hall of Fame?
No kidding?
To me, it's a travesty that Gary's band can be called The Guess Who - but that's a whole other story. At least it encourages people to listen to the songs of the real Guess Who (hopefully).
Jann Wenner is one of Hollywood’s legendary pedophile’s. If the truth ever came out about him it would make Harvey Weinstein look like a Peeping Tom in comparison. The world will be a better place once he has left it.
Not to mention Neil Young.
Until Canada formally apologizes and atones for Loverboy, no Canadians are allowed into the hall of fame.
Man, we had such great music in the day!❤
I love The Guess Who! My personal favorite song of theirs is Undun. I fell in love with Burton Cummings voice in that and then I heard he learned to play the flute just for that song. How amazing is that?! Honestly, every time I hear it I just revel in the pure enjoyment for a bit 😊
My favorite song of theirs too, followed by today’s No Time
The story behind Undun: ua-cam.com/video/vO5bBQg0VaI/v-deo.html
Great version of Undun from Burton 's 1977 Super Special on CBC: ua-cam.com/video/feycz-QTITU/v-deo.html
Fans need to vote The Guess Who into the Hall of fame
If Jann Wenner says so. 😂
It’s about damn time!
Love the Guess Who. The interviews with Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are almost as great as their music. Keep 'em coming. They are great storytellers. Does it ever seem surreal when you are interviewing your musical heroes?
Absolutely!
We want more of them! Yes!
Two of my favorite guys you interview. Thanks for bringing us more great stories from them. They're Rock legends and don't get nearly the recognition they deserve. Loved the Les Paul story! Very cool that he got them into the show like that and that Paul remembered Randy all those years later and played with him! Amazing! Have an excellent day, Adam.
Thanks Jill!
This was a great story. We need more of these guys.
These guys do have one of my all-time favorite songs, it's not No Time though. It would be These Eyes.
Such wonderful songwriters and musicians. Thanks Prof.
These Eyes was the first Guess Who song I ever heard. I love it. American Woman is my favorite.
@@Whisper_292nother good one
Very cool!
Randy has a great story for "These Eyes", from its initial inception and how Burton worked with him on the lyrics. 🎸😎
Undun should also be in there.
Another classic interview for a classic song and album! Great job Adam!❤
Two of the greatest to ever grace a stage. Fantastic interview. All of The Guess Who is just priceless.
LOVE these interviews, professor! You are a peerless archivist.
Another phenomenal interview! I love Randy’s Les Paul story and could listen to him tell stories endlessly. No Time and Undun are my very favourite Guess Who songs. Great band!
Very cool story and interview Professor! Saw BTO in ‘79! Awesome!🤘🔥
Great interview. I loved hearing no time on the tv show supernatural. Randy Bachman is a great player and a great singer too.
The Guess who are among one of my favorite classic rock bands and have an amazing catalog of outstanding albums and Burton Cummings solo stuff is pretty good to
I could listen to Randy Bachman all day. What a storyteller. He had me in hysterics with that Les Paul story. "No Time Left For You" is also my favorite Guess Who song. Gives me goosebumps every time. That lead guitar part is actually just a standard 5-6-7 blues line. Keith Richards also uses it with his intro to "Satisfaction". Everything you said, I agree with. Great guitar line, great harmonies, great chorus.
I bought "The Best of the Guess Who" when I was a teen shortly after its 1971 release and would play the first 4 songs on Side 1 in order, over and over. (These Eyes, Laughing, Undun and No Time.) So much that I expect to hear the next song after I hear one of them on the radio these days. And I agree, Professor, my fave is No Time as well. Some YT videos out there showing them doing live versions in the 2000s that are excellent. Thanks so much for your time with these legends!
Absolutely love these interviews with Randy and Burton! Randy is so open and honest about his influences and his always acknowledging his Canadian background. It's great how they both remember the way things came about the same way. I could listen to these guys tell their stories all day, great stuff. Never knew that was 2 guitars playing the same thing to create that classic full sound we hear. MORE RANDY AND BURTON PROFESSOR, I can't get enough!
Amen!
I always thought it was a single guitar this whole time!
Teen in 70's, parking at night, drinking beers, car doors open cranking the BTO, let it ride, taking care of business, were always on WBCN Boston back then. I still play them today, Loud.
Another great interview/story, Adam! ❤
Thanks again!
Loved this; thank you! 🙌
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, the Guess Who and BTO might be Canada's greatest contribution to music. Love them all.
Randy Bachman is a master storyteller..... always a fun listen. This is just more proof the Rock Hall is a joke.
Thanks for this great start to the week, Professor! Have a great Monday!
Please don't tell me you forgot about Gordon Lightfoot.
@matthewsmith2578
No I didn't.
I rank Cummings/Bachman/Guess Who/BTO number 1
Rush number 2
Gordon number 3.
They are amazing!
It’s unbelievable that these intelligent musical geniuses continue to be ignored by the RRHOF.
Love some Guess Who.
Love these interviews.
Love POR episodes especially this one.
Great tune
It's so crazy how much I love your channel!! Please keep bringing stories I didn't know I needed!
I looked at the time, it was 8:02 and no new Professor. Just as I am pulling out the Kleenex for the impending flood of righteous man tears I hear that lovely little "ding" in my notifications 🤘
I love both of these guys!! I’ve known about the Guess Who since I was a teenager in the 70s, but have a whole new appreciation for the band now - especially Randy and Burton. Because of YOUR interviews, Adam! They are just gold. Thank you!
POR. Great segment - Thanks for sharing
Both groups the “Guess Who and BTO” great groups, great music, fun to listen too.
Loved when they wore the Hockey Sweaters on the “Midnight Special”

The Les Paul story is funny!
Burton Cummings - Great voice. And does a good Gordon Lightfoot imitation 😊
What a clownshoe at the MHOF.
Love Randy and Burton so I'm looking forward to this one. But mostly I wanted to say Good Morning Adam and wish you a nice week, brother.

Love what was said about writing and finding out later what it might have meant. It’s the same for art sometimes. Why did i keep painting twisted vines? Anxiety? But you tend to see it later.
That Les Paul story is crazy! Les clearly had a phenomenal memory...
Isn't that cool?
Right!
Burton’s stories are the most entertaining ones on the channel every time.
Or Randy. I get confused
Thank You, Thank You, so much for your Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings interviews.
They are and have been two of my favourites since 1968 when I first heard 'These Eyes' and their tribute to the late Gordon Lightfoot, 'Lightfoot.
I remember in 1969 buying their 'Canned Wheat' album in Kingston Jamaica. It became one of my favourite albums and still is. No Time on the Canned Wheat I think is better than the version on American Woman. With the Guess Who I always love the fact that they always had a long song on their albums that they expanded on like Friends of Mine' 'The Key' 'Three More Days' etc. I've also been fortunate to see them(Randy and Burton) in concert a few times. My continued Best To Burton and Randy.
Thanks again for your continued work and interviews Adam, I truly appreciate it.
I'm probably a bit younger than Randy, Neal, but I was born in the cold city of "Winterpeg", the town where these guys got their start. Sometimes when your in a desolate circumstance, you create to survive. The Guess Who did more than survive, they conquered. The first time I heard them was on a jukebox in Northern Ontario at camp. I can still go there. Three chords and the truth🤟!
Hey Professor! My friend’s brother had the Canned Wheat album and I always begged him to play both sides for us! Thanks for the memories! Love your channel! ❤️🎸🎤🎵
"I saw les Paul's fingers and you only saw his ass" The lady in the car next to me was looking at me funny cuz I lost it when I heard that 😂 hysterical 😂😂😂
So many successful musicians turn elitist after reaching the top but Randy Bachman is still a fan and is just like one of us mere mortals. In '83 I was at Ft Hood and was looking forward to a free Guess Who concert on base and at the last minute a guy in my platoon turned up AWOL and I had to cover his guard duty. Missed the concert.
I have heard American Woman and I think I've heard These Eyes , but I've never heard this song! I know WAY more vintage music than most people my age (14) but I really have heard nothing! I'll be sure to put the American Woman album on my list! One of the reasons I love your channel, Professor, is I can get suggestions for my collection! Thank You!
It’s such a great song.
The sad thing is Burton Cummings is so underrated here's one of my favorite singers of all times you look at what he had. Throughout the years amazing just amazing how he can go from Hard Rock to a an amazing solo just so underrated
The guitar tone Bachman got on No Time (particularly the Chicago single version) is simply the smoothest 60's fuzz tone. It's stimulating and soothing at the same time. Such a classic song!
I love these videos! Hearing Randy talk about the secrets of how they recorded these amazing songs is so cool! You have the best job!!
No Time for American Woman so No Sugar Tonight. #POR Have a great week everyone, from Tampa Florida...
Have a great week my friend!
Rock on Michael! Keep laughing so these eyes can come undun!
Thanks for the great interview! I am Canadian, have seen Randy several times. If you have the opportunity, go see his show "Every song has a story ". Randy narrates each songs beginnings and performs it. His enthusiasm for music is contagious. Just saw Burton a month ago and he still performs with style and class. Easily should have been in the rock and roll Hall of Fame for group and individual achievements.
This is one of my favorite Guess Who songs.
All artists are influenced by somebody. It's up to them whether they want to be a blatant rip off or make it their own and I believe Randy and Burton did a wonderful job in turning Buffalo Springfield into their own thing.
What a great interview, both of those guys are so passionate about their music, and both fans are awesome, nice job!
Fantastic story, thanks for sharing it. Had to believe they aren't in the HOF but not having Phil Collins in is almost criminal.
I love when you interview these guys always funny stories. Never realized no time was based on 2 buffalo spring field songs. Love this band but this was probably 1st song i heard from them made me a fan of this band. Great guitar riff and vocal harmonies. They are in my top 10 favorite classic rock bands.
Wow! what a story about Les Paul. I saw BTO in Kansas City in the mid seventies with ELO and another band that ended with the O sound (don't remember who they were) it was awesome. BTO were keeping the roadies busy drum heads and guitar strings were breaking like crazy. I love the sound these guys can make.
Thanks!
Patto? Bango? Wilco? Gosh, you got me curious now.
Great stories! I have always loved The Guess Who and Bachman Turner. I honestly didn’t know the connection. I was never one to know much about music except what I like. It’s fun to learn so much more. It really does add a new richness to my music listening. Thank you!
"we just wanted to rock ... because that's what you do in Winnipeg".
That was just awesome. Bachman is an absolute beauty.
God...JUST LOVE YOUR INTERVIEWS WITH RANDY BACHMAN. He's a favorite in all iterations from one band to the next. 'No Time' is a definite top of the list and love to play them while driving long-distance for day trips along with Bob Seager. Have several Albums and gave many for gifts to other people wish to have kept. Love his story about how artists take little pieces of other people's work and run with it giving whole new dimensions, colors and topography...It's so phenomenal when sitting down to actually try to play music and learning how much overlap there really is and how all takes a different path towards new meanings not only from artist to artist; but the same artist in one moment to the next. WHAT A HOOT...Playing with a hero like Les Paul and he had grown into being a favorite of Les Paul, too. 💥💥💖💖💥💥 LOVE THESE CLASSICS WITH THE BANDS OF BACKMAN AND CUMMINGS and the person not allowing these tremendous artists into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame LOSES ALL CREDIBILITY DUE TO THIS TRAVESTY.
These dudes give great interviews. I always thought "No Time" was about Vietnam, I guess one line was. I cant imagine having Les Paul jam one of my songs with me. What a cool dude
Are Canadians somehow better at down to earth genuine rock n roll enthusiasm? This reality hits me like a ton of bricks as I contemplate the super intellectual nature of Rush contrasted to the hilarious silly behavior of Alex and Geddy. It's like it was right in front of my face for decades.
I never would have imagined that the stories some of these guys have would end up being as much of a treat as the music itself.
This is one of the best episodes of your show. Love Randy Bachman and all of his stories.
Just a joyous pair of interviews.! Thank You Prof. Have always loved the many "voices" of the Guess Who.

It’s past time they wised up. Cheers to you, RC32 🍻
I'm always excited when you interview Randy and Burton. Randy is a wonderful storyteller and seems likely a genuinely good guy.
What a neat story about Les Paul. My folks used to tell a story (how true it is, well) about Less Paul before he met Mary Ford. The only reason I would have ever gone to NYC would to have found out if the story was true.
Ya, Guess Who should be in the hall. I've said before that they got a lot of air time on WMMS, back in the days before the hall existed, depending upon which DJ was on the air. Well, maybe one day they will make it. ;-)
Randy used to have a program on CBC radio called Vinyl Tap, each episode had a theme and he would play classic songs that fit the theme. In between songs he would tell stories about the music industry. It ran from 2005-2021 and for me it was a must listen every Saturday evening. I know there is a shorter podcast version now but there is something different about a scheduled radio program that has been lost.
Being from LI NY it's quite amusing knowing that the Nassau Colisieum and Iridium are in my veritable backyard lol.. Great storytelling from true Rock icons..
They are so fun to listen to!
It’s awesome.
I've said it before, but Randy Bachman is just one of the best interviews. I could listen to him tell stories all day!!
This band was one of the bands that was the soundtrack to my childhood. Miss you dad you showed me some legendary music
Sounds right to me.
This song sticks even 50+years later...young professional, thinking the world is mine to be taken, then bam..first serious heart ache and loss. Yes...this song fit into many of our lives.
Randy Bachman is an incredible rock historian, and a very underrated guitarist.
Every interview you do with these guys is magic. They are fantastic storytellers, so humble, and interesting.
I grew up in Canada, still live here but I was exposed to both the Guess Who and BTO, the radio station I listened to in the 80's would play them a lot. If I had to make a top ten list of Canadian bands I think both would be in that list although there are some strong contenders like Triumph, April Wine, Max Webster, Trooper, Chilliwack, Our Lady Peace, and so many more, it's hard to put anyone above Rush though when it comes to Canadian music. Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young would both be hard to beat.
