- Every wonder what the cheapest trombone sounds like? Does it even make a sound? Does it come in a color that my students love to call "pink" even though it isn't pink? Find out with this review!
The trombone I review in this video...
Tromba Trombone- amzn.to/44dIG0a
The "other" plastic trombone brand on Amazon (seeing as the tromba seems to be out of stock now...)
pBone- amzn.to/3UNeogD
The trombone stand that doesn't break in this video...
Titan Trombone Stand- amzn.to/3Qib7Eo

ebay you forgot ebay. It is like the best place to get used instruments. Also tromba and pbone are good plastic instruments but pampet is terrible and they make unusable trumpets that are practically bugles. Personaly plastic will be better for the new instruments from the 50-200$ range. Used is different though you can pick up a used yamaha clarinet for like 150$ in decent condition and like a decent yamaha trumpet like a ytr 136 that comes in silver for like 160$ and a trombone for like 150 on a bid and flutes are the cheapest for like 100$
@@kparserpcs6699 you're making me want to check out a pampet just to see how bad it is 😂
Too easy! You can tell by the sound of the two materials sliding on each other
@@MadMusicBand ungodly amounts of bad
@@widojay2048 Ha, yea that was the first thing I noticed while editing the video, not really anything I could do to make it less obvious lol.
I would love to see a whole orchestra playing the cheapest instruments on Amazon.
This would be awesome! The string section would really be something...
There are two types of band directors.
Bald guys, and non-bald guys
This guy qualifies as both
43,461 views as of this comment. I just wanted to let you know that one of them is from my dog who clicked on this video while I was away.
Your dog has good taste 😂
Does your dog play the trombone, now?
@@odesseus He did rip a good fart tone last night. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I imagine you'd be a fun beginning band teacher to have as a kid and they look forward to your class, and that's the highest complement I can think of.
Aww, thanks! I've really started to enjoy teaching the younger ages over the years. We've had some amazing beginning band classes the past few years that makes teaching them a ton of fun. They all seem to put up with me too 😂
“Yeah hold on let me water my trombone”
@@idosometimespost2860😂
your channel is Mad underrated. pun intended.
Gotta start somewhere! :)
I agree
Bro let him be.
Frrr tho
I’m not gonna lie, I thought you had like 100k subs until like 10 secs ago lol, your content is amazing!
Maybe one day!
Also, my daughter (and I) love bofuri. Mii is probably my second favorite character after Sally :)
@@MadMusicBand NO WAY! That’s awesome, Sally is pretty cool lol, keep up the great work! I too want to be a band teacher some day, so that may be me in the future!
Edit: Watching you play trombone was funny, I personally play trombone, so seeing a percussionist playing trombone is great lol
Same. 🤣
As a trombone player I can confirm that pinching your finger with the slide is REALLY REALLY REALLY painful😭
This!!!! If I can save one person from this fate via this video I'll call it a success.
I like your channel. I did not major in music but I played bass trombone in the college jazz band. I still play trombone as a hobby. I like your channel and you seem to make music fun for your kids. I was trying to help you get a better tone. I’m impressed that you can play all the instruments in the band. I can’t wait for another instrument review.
Ok I play the trombone and I agree
My hand bleeded
Mr too, girlie
I've had a plastic trombone (red pBone) for the last 2 years. The main reasons why I use it is that I play in a marching band, and it's lighter, less fragile and warms up a lot faster. The pBone is 2.5x more expensive than this one. The slide is actually very scratchy at the beginning, but it's got smoother over time (not as smooth as the brass trombone, though). I generally use it with a metal mouthpiece because I find the sound is better. However, when I play to several hours in a row, or out in the cold, I prefer the plastic mouthpiece which is more comfortable. The tuning slide slides too much, so I has to stuck a teflon thread between the slide and the body. All in all, the sound is not as good as a brass trombone, you have to blow harder, but it's definitely worth it. But for the orchestra, I keep my heavy fragile brass Yamaha
I agree, I think if trombone is your main instrument, and for how cheap they are there really isn't any reason not to have a plastic trombone at some point. Different tools for different needs.
the production quality on this video is actually crazy. i was super surprised when i looked at the subscriber count and it was under 100 thousand. keep going man!! I can tell you'll make it!!
Thanks, I'll do my best :)
great vid! Im a trombone player myself but have not delved into the pbone world. Might be something I will look into for mobile practice sessions. Thanks for showcasing it!
Of course! I've really enjoyed using it these past few weeks, it's been working flawlessly so far for my needs. The slide has definitely loosened up too, it's way better than my metal horn in that respect.
Always good to hear of another Percussion Band Director. It can be rough for us because all the wind instruments function fundamentally differently in their tone production. It took a long time for me build up my concept of breathe support and embouchure for each instrument so I could support students effectively. Hope you are enjoying the band teacher career as much as I am! Best job in the world in my opinion!
Yea, I've definitely got a lot better since starting 9 years ago. I'm pretty proud of how good I've progressed on wind instruments from when I started.
As a trombonist, for someone who is not a trombone player and on a plastic one you decently good
Thanks! I do pride myself in my ability to sorta-kinda play a ton of different instruments. Clarinet is up next, I literally just finished recording it 😄
Really nice video setting! First video of yours that I have watched, but I already feel like you should have like 150k subs ngl. Have a nice day!
Thanks, 150k sounds good to me :)
Glad this got on my homepage!
Just found your channel and super great quality videos! Very entertaining and makes me want to be a band director even more!
Thanks for this comment, that's super awesome to hear :)

I didn’t even realise that you have 700 subs. You’re so underrated, totally going to sub
I appreciate it! :)
love your reviews dawg
More to come!
ive been wanting a trombone and my birthdays coming up so im crossing my fingers i can get one! great videos btw. i like the cheap intrument series
Happy birthday!! That sounds like a great gift to me! :)
you have a great setup and great quality video and editing, im sure youll blow up soon
Thanks! It's been a lot of fun making the videos so far. The rest of the room is a disaster but I'm proud of that little corner 😂
Good stuff yet again!
I appreciate your support! 🎶
woah what i actually thought you had atleast 200k subs with the video quality!
Thanks! Hopefully I get here some day :)
Bought one of the coolwind and it didn't come with any of those bonus items (stand, cleaning tools, etc.) so that's a monster deal!
As an old tuba player that wanted something to mess around with from time to time, these are great! (I ALMOST went with the tuba but cost/size...maybe one day lol)
Keep up the great work! Easy like/sub!
I'd love to try out their tuba, but it's not gonna be $60 haha.
Ur channel will be one of the biggest keep it up!
Thanks! :)
I’m liking this, great quality for a smaller channel, it’ll go far. As somebody who taught themself trombone (I play euphonium so it’s not the hardest thing), my first trombone was a crappy and heavily dented straight tenor like yours, and my tone was a bit questionable at first, it’s just that practice, and not using my beyond abused trombone.
I’m now realizing how bad I typed this.
Yup, I've got a ways to go on my trombone playing and it's definitely not the horns fault 😂
love these
i cant wait to see this series continue and to see your channel grow!
Thanks! Me too :)
Your channel is underrated! Good job at 2k!
Also, I looked up the trombone serial number, but I couldn't find anything.
Thanks! And yea, I've looked it up before with no luck too. I wish they'd make that easier to do...
Had a good day, thanks for asking.
Good deal :)
Ok the subscribe button with the times signature and the treble clef and bar lines is so cool. As a fellow percussionist, so im glad to have a UA-camr I can rely on👍👍👍
Glad someone appreciated my subscribe button 😂
I'd like to see you polish up the metal on the inner slide stockings with inexpensive automotive polish or something. Additionally, I would like to how it responds to slide cream (Yamaha Trombone Slide Lubricant is a personal fave). Lastly, I wish we could see how the plastic bone, and mouthpieces respond to loud playing for instances like in a marching band. Great video, hope your channel gets bigger. Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks so much! I'll have to keep those ideas in mind :)
Great video! New subscriber !
I played a plastic C trumpet on my senior trumpet recital and I actually enjoyed the warmer sound and consistent intonation I got with the plastic trumpet. I played a piece called the storyteller and it was probably the best piece on my recital. I almost feel like the plastic instruments are better at controlling your tone on and don’t let you get that “blast” tone as easy so they are almost better for the newest beginners as it’s easier to get a “good” tone and they stay in tune no matter the temperature so they are also a shout for marching band use. I might buy the plastic trombone just for a fun instrument at some point to mess around with.
I've yet to try a plastic trumpet, but I'd like to. Plastic instruments are really nice for when marching band creeps into October and it starts to get really cold. Hard not to enjoy a fully functional instrument at $65.
Thank you for this video. I have been thinking of an experiment i want to try. And now it is a go. I am going to frankenstein together a trombone with a sax or clarinet mouthpiece to make a slide saxobone. Best to you.
Be sure to let me know how it goes!
great video, keep it up
Thanks, will do!
I'll Recommend This To Riker, He Probably Wont Buy It But He Does Like His Trombone
My day is going great, thanks for asking
That's what I like to hear!
They do make carbon fiber trombones.
Just about every part of the horn can be carbon fiber except the stockings of the slide, and any rotor valves that might be attached.
Butler is the main company behind them and they sound great. Super popular to get an outer sleeve done for a lightweight slide.
Ive noticed the full horns are popular amongst the older amateur crowd. When playing trombone isnt everyday and you have disposable income, a carbon fiber horn makes a lot of sense!
Yup, I had no idea. I'd LOVE to get my hands on one some day, but that's definitely not in the cards right now haha.
Just found your channel and now I want to learn the trombone 😂.
My plan is already working 😈
I was expected like a normal music stand was i was pretty surprised you got one of those sitting stands to rest instruments. Tbh only learned about them or know they are supplied well in the band room 😅
Yea, I was really excited about the stand...wish I'd known to push it down further :p
I might get one! The finish got me. I play in a community marching band (Big Easy Easton Brass) and I'm all in favor of ditching my heavy baritone sax for something like this. Fortunately (or not!) I play both.
I was scared the red was going to look cheesy, but I actually like it quite a bit haha. I definitely wouldn't want to march with a bari sax. I spent my freshman year of high school marching the largest bass drum, so I'm no stranger to back pain from lugging around huge instruments.
I picked up a pbone when I was student teaching. It was nice, but in the end it stays at my parent’s place to play at community bands when visiting.
I picked up a pbone mini though just for the ability to learn alto trombone on the cheap. That being said they will not replace my $4000 Yamaha bass trombone, but they’re not as bad as some people say.
I would say if you ever get to check out a f attachment plastic trombone I would. It is not to bad. The rotor is a bit slow. I went with Tiger because it has a metal lead pipe that helps warm the sound slightly. Still doesn’t replace a brass horn, but it is a little closer. No much different than a fiberglass sousaphone and a metal one. Still different, but not bad.
Hadn't even heard of the mini, I'll have to check that out.
YOU KEEP ON HITING THE SLIDE ON THE TABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd never do that...........................🤫
Ok good thx
You may already know this, but “Tromba” is the Italian word for trumpet..they also make plastic trumpets..”Trombone” is also an Italian word-it means “big trumpet”….
I didn't know that, but it makes sense to me!
Glad you got to enjoy the funness of a trombone!
Trombone is awesome!
7 Nations Army! 14:27. Gonna play that in my concert later this month for concert!
That's awesome, great song :)
Excuse me, you only have 500 subscribers? This feels like a video in a 1 million subscriber channel.
Oh yeah you just started, it makes sense…
I'm glad you think so! Hopefully the videos will only get better from here :)
It's the perfect trombone for a percussionist. You can hit it with sticks and not hurt it.
🤣
You should do an instrument collection video with all the instruments you own
I'll have to do that over the summer when all my instruments come home, it would be a long video!
Cheap amazon Instruments are highly underrated. I take two periods of band, so I can’t always buy the most expensive instruments and my trumpet is around $100, it has served me well for 1.5 years the only thing to watch out for are the valves drying out quickly, that may be an issue with the stock oil though.
So far that's the consensus I've come to as well. I'm very happy with the quality of the trumpet and trombone I've gotten so far for how little money they were. I believe I'll check out a clarinet next, and that could very possibly break the streak of good instruments haha.
The squeaks are going to be worse than a fork scraping a porcelain plate.
The trombone you have according to the serial number is from 1949 and the closest modern one I could find by blessing is around $1,500 new it appears to be a student model. First time watching loved the video
Thanks for the info! Mines definitely not worth 1.5k now, but I bet it was great once upon a time :)
3:50 Never heard that note, how do you play it?
😂❤
I love these cheap instrument reviews. Im 16 and i play bass guitar, lead guitar, tuba, euphonium, piano, clarinet, bassoon, trombone, bass clarinet, trumpet, and flute. Bass guitar is my main instrument. Been playing it for 8 years. Please make a cheap bass guitar or cheap tuba review video.
Bass guitar would be a great one, as I don't actually own one myself yet even though I have multiple guitars for some reason... Tuba on the other hand...I have a feeling that the cheapest tuba would still be really expensive 😂. I'll have to work my way up to that one :p
Also, wow that's awesome that you play so many instruments! I wish I was as driven as you when I was 16 but I couldn't even read music at that point!
If you want a plastic trombone, get a pBone. Have one of the originals, played it for a couple years, it's great. Doesn't have the same feedback as a brass horn but it's really hard to tell from a disance. Just get a different mouthpiece and it will match any King 606 or Yamaha 354, the included mouthpiece is bad lol. I play a 3B and a 6B duo gravis regularly now, but I wouldn't hesitate to play a pBone.
I look forward to trying one, I've heard good things!
also, would it be possible to do a video of this type of an euphonium or baritone please
I'd absolutely love to, but it's looking to be above $400 at the minimum for a baritone... Gonna need to work my way up to that 😂
@@MadMusicBand You should try out the jHorn!
Temporarily broke my brain at 21:55.
Muahaha!
😮 YOUR SO GOOD
Plastic Brass instruments are perfect for buskers and smaller traveling bands. If you can mic the bell up on stage it would sound fine. Or in an open air busking situation not a lot of people would notice.
Yup, I've been really impressed with it.
@@MadMusicBand as a former jazz trombone player, I am currently shopping for one of these just because of the cost. I am fully willing to sacrifice the few things this plastic lacks over traditional brass.
@PrinXessDime I'm with you there, the cost to performance is pretty high for a $60 price tag. Even for double that you get a lot of instrument for the money
My days going fine
Finally, somebody said how their day was going! :)
More of a curiosity thing, do you direct concert band, marching band, both, or something different?
I'm at a small-ish school, so I direct concert, marching, jazz, and pep band. :)
@@MadMusicBand Good to know! Not easy to direct such a variety of bands so you absolutely have my respect! o7
Okay but what did you search to find this bc I'm trying to get it
I think it's out of stock now... There's a link in the video description to the horn, but a few days ago it looks like they sold out :p
@@MadMusicBand thank you man
im so glad i use adblock :D
someone please tell me what was the tune he played at 14:14
Seven nation army :)
The blessing looks like a ‘scholastic’ model, but i’m a little too lazy to do any research on when it was produced. The quality of that horn really depends whether it was made in the elkhart factory pre merger from like 1930-1980. If not, it’s probably made with crappy chinese materials and manufacturing. Also, you should play your F naturals a little farther out haha. Great video :)
Thanks for giving your thoughts on the trombone, I really would have thought it would be easier to figure out but I haven't had any luck personally. Also, good looking out on the F's, I'll have to be less lazy ;)
@@MadMusicBandLooking into the serial number seems like it was made late 90s so right when production quality went down. If the bell has ‘Elkhart’ stamped on it, it might be one of the later models still made it Wisconsin, other wise it’s probably a stencil made in china. As for Fs, i was more talking that first position is a little questionable, too!
@@chipdavis7835well I'll be, you led me to researching and you do indeed have to kick out first position F a touch to get it in tune, had no idea... That's good to know. Maybe I had been lipping that down, or possibly had just been out of tune 😂. I'll have to start working that in to my playing and teaching, thanks!
Oh hey, the slide is self lapping XD
Edit: 21:54 HEY! I may not be a trombone player, but I know my sci-fi, that's not *Star Trek*! Edit2: ok you got me lol.
Ha! I can't believe I had to wait this long to get this comment. 🤣 I was really proud of that joke.
At some point down the line, you should review orchestral instruments and don’t tell any of my friends in Orchestra but if you. Were the band teacher at school, I would totally join
I'd like to do orchestral instruments eventually as well! I'll be honest, I'm not great at them though haha. Also, don't worry, I won't tell your friends...but you should join band anyways ;)
I haven’t played a trombone since middle school. 20 years ago I might get one of these. Be good for my twins to learn on. My wife and dog might hate me though lmao.
That's cool to hear, I bet a local community band would love to have you (if there's one nearby). Either way, at least it's easy on the wallet! :)
very nice video why only 537 subs
Working on it! Gotta start somewhere ;)
Can you review the tromba trumpet it's plastic and uses metal valves
I'd love to check one out! I'll have to add it to the list. Looks like pBone, pampet, and tromba all make plastic trumpets. I'll have to check out the differences.
I play Euphonium which plays plays the same notes as the tronbone and and also uses the same mouth piece
I'd love to try a plastic euphonium some time
Why did I get a $6000 Shires when I could have just bought this and sounded amazing?
Ha, I'll trade you! ;)
I can’t carry a tune even if it’s in a water bucket. But brass instruments have metal “echo” right after the main sound. Plastic doesn’t, it’s just noise.
I'm going to guess horn A is the plastic and Horn B is the brass. Even without headphones I can hear a little bit more color and broadness in Horn B, which is a customary comparison when you're playing both a plastic and a brass horn
You got it!
Friendly suggestion to somebody wanting/playing a plastic horn: Metal mouthpieces are MUCH better, I suspect were you to put the metal one from your old 'bone on the plastic horn you would like it.
I actually showed both in the video! I agree that the metal mouthpiece did make a positive difference. It was hard for me to tell when actually playing it, but while editing the video the difference became pretty apparent between the two.
I honestly thought the opposite for the blind test because horn B sounded a bit muted
It wasn't even easy to tell while playing them, they are very similar. I could tell, but not as easily as I had thought I would be able to.
i am in percussion in the fifth grade Hopatcong band
I play trombone to :)
You should find the cheapest baritone saxophone
I have a feeling that would still be quite expensive 😂
You have no idea@@MadMusicBand
The mouthpiece is for the feel honestly. Especially for someone who is going to switch to a better trombone in the future. But a plastic trombone is cool to have around. It's useful for things like pep band. If it gets demolished it's not the end of the world and is a good horn for very young kids.
If only there were half-way decent cheap options like this for all the other instruments too. Other cheap instruments are too unreliable and too expensive for "cheap." Better to just invest a little.
I agree, if $60 could get you an instrument like this for every instrument so many more kids could be in band. Hopefully the quality of cheap instruments keeps going up!
With the saxophone mouthpiece thing, you’re required to get a different mouthpiece in my school for sax
It can make a huge difference
I chomp my pinky like once every month but it is what it is
The things we do for the sake of our art!
Hey man ur Channel is really underrated im so glad i could sub for ad revenue (U SHOULD DO A CLARINET NEXT)
Thanks :) I'm thinking of doing alto next, but clarinet would be cheaper... Hmm
@@MadMusicBand haha!
Do you know Jeff ray of Olympic View middle school
You should get an Alto Clarinet
I don't think I've ever actually played one, that would be fun :)
“I dont think theres any CONN’S to using a metal mouthpiece”. I see what you did there…..👀🤣
😂
OK, just basing it off of the sound. I heard Horn a is the plastic trombone horn B was the metal trombone
I say this, I'm also not a noob. I'm in band and I can tell the difference between the brassy feel of the metal and the sound of the plastic. I can just hear the resonance of the brass
The answer is at the end of the video :)
Why did you set it on the bell at 11:07 it hurts my eyes (I know it doesn't reallyy matter for a plastic trombone but still)
Ha, yea, it also screwed with the camera focus for a bit, I guess that's just my karma 😅
Well looks like you got that 1000 subscribers and then some.😊
Yup, you all were fantastic! It's still unreal to me :)
Is cheap French Horn worth it
Great question! I hope to find out eventually :)
My husband just decided to learn the trombone, so seeing this video made me laugh.
That's awesome! Tell him that I believe in him 💪
The plastic horns sound better with metal mouthpieces.
Yea, it was tough to tell in my basement, but I agree with you
I wonder why those trombones don’t have the weird trigger thingy
That would make it quite a bit more expensive I wager. Also, I don't know if they make a trigger on a plastic horn.
Could you do this with a French horn?
Cheapest one seems to be above $300, I'll have to work my way up to it 😂
@@MadMusicBand Okay I will subscribe to help you get there !!
That song was seven nation army
You got it!
whats fun about the trombone is tis easy to go from it to a bugle since playing the trombone has a lot of slurring
Nice trombone
I think so :)
You could tell which trombone you were hearing based off the slide noise 😂
Shhh don't give away the secret 😂
