    I got a really good used student alto about 8 years ago for $210 at Sam Ash. Still plays really well except the low B and Bb, but I think that might be because I haven't gotten it serviced in at least 4 or 5 years

    I was actually looking in temp for the heck of it to see what they had on there. I considered getting an alto or soprano sax from there just for fun. I once had an LA Sax soprano and that thing was awesome. I'm primarily a brass player, just learned sax way back when I got braces in case I couldn't at trumpet anymore. But I digress...I sold my soprano sax because it deserves to be played more than I did. I miss my saxes. I could play careless whisper.....

    Just got recommended this video, and feels like a "fool me once" moment, saw the Slade sax from Amazon in the bettersax videos, ended up giving them TWO tries by replacing the first bad one. The second one was just as bad for completely different reasons. Either these UA-camrs are getting some deals to push these or they are very lucky but I feel these instruments are worse for beginners than anything because they don't know if it's the sax or their lack of skills causing the issues and they develop some bad habits, just my 2 cents

      Honestly, I'm with you on the beginners things. It's always going to be a worry when you don't know better. I can assure you though, I wasn't paid or anything to make this video :)

      @@MadMusicBand That's good to know. I'm picking the saxophone after over 10 years of not playing, and thought it would be an way to get back into it, but it's honestly been more headache than it's worth. Maybe I'll give Mendini a shot, but I'm already talking to someone about possibly getting a fixed up old Japanese made Yamaha YAS-23, which sounds like the path of least headaches at this point.

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand 2 дні тому

      @@davidandrade5064 yea, given the choice I'd likely also go for the Yamaha. I feel like Yamaha's are one of the safest options out there if it's in the budget, you just need to get a trusted repair tech to give it a once over. Good luck, I hope whatever you end up with works out for you!

    Hi! As a saxophonist, I have a little wizdom to share. As a general rule, a smaller saxophone requires more presice manufacturing, as a small difference in the gaps can lead to a bigger difference in tuning. By this logic, you should get a baritone. Also, they are REALLY fun!

  • @coajrmusic
    @coajrmusic 3 дні тому

    Hey Teach, rather than suck a new reed to a play-ready condition, I soak them in like a double-shot sized glass for an hour or two; I'm allergic to factory residue, but it's also a standard method of prep. I enjoyed the review, but sticking with my curved Yani... But for the right person the price is unbeatable for what you get...

I got one to try oboe and I don’t know about others’ experiences, but my oboe has been amazing and I’ve only ever had one problem which was easily fixed. It even got me into district band and a state band audition (super soon and hoping I do well!)

    Had one of these for my freshman marching band season when I was in highschool and I have to say it played well for the first few weeks and suddenly it was problem after problem. I took it to get repaired twice before I basically turned the thing into an overpriced football😂😂. It let me down time after time for two months. Just spend the money for a lower priced sax or rent a student horn if you plan to use your instrument at all

    This looks like a fun thing to play around with, but as I'm just a beginner (as in, zero knowledge of playing an instrument), it' hard to justify spending $300+ on it at this point. If I master the dollar store recorder, then maybe. However, one thing I was wondering is if it can output to Bluetooth audio devices, like speakers and headphones, or is it only an instrument to phone/computer connection? Being able to play over headphones would make practicing much less annoying to those around me.

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand 5 днів тому

      I haven't tried that specifically as I always go through my phone or computer, but you can always plug in headphones to play. Plugging in also allows 0 lag, which would likely happen connecting straight from Bluetooth.

    Seen lots of people talk smack about these cheap instruments because they're hard to repair, but I've seen what it would cost to fully refurbish an old clarinet I bought at an estate sale...you could buy like 4 of these things for the cost of repairing one good one.

    There’s a brand of Indian made saxophones from a company called sai musical and I’m DYING to see it up close!! They look so funky and would be a really interesting conversation about the rising influx of Indian musical instrument factory’s!! The saxophones are almost guaranteed to be entertainingly bad as Trent Hamilton did a few videos on his worlds cheapest corner and trumpet and mini sousaphone videos

    If you ever see a Selmer Paris or Yanigasawa sax for like 490 dollars brand new it’s probably one of these horns with a fake label on it, also the mouthpieces they usually include are bad and you can improve your tone 170% with just a different mouthpiece. Usually the mouthpieces that come with with saxes are jazz style.
