Yeah a lot of muted brass instruments were used in swing era music! You're absolutely right! And as for the "roast" (which may have been a slight exaggeration lol) a sound similar to brass instruments using mutes often gets created when you're not quite letting enough air through the mouthpiece when you buzz into it to produce a tone. Typical for beginners which is totally okay!
Thank you! I really appreciate that! I definitely enjoyed composing and playing a variety of music styles, but jazz has always been at the core of my inspiration. There's nothing quite like it!
I'm a drummer and percussionist, but lately i've been really interested in brass, especially trombone. So eventually, when I'm able to afford it, I'll try to get my hands onto some of those instruments, and this is pretty inspiring to do so. I'm not a big fan of the trumpet-harmon mute combo, like the Miles Davis sound (I'm more of a Chet Baker trumpet or Clark Terry flügelhorn type), but I have the idea that a cup mute on trumpet and a harmon mute on trombone would be a fire combo.
Nice! Great to hear you're interested in brass! And yeah not everyone is a fan of harmon mutes. I've even done some recordings where I thought it would sound good, but ended up liking the raw trumpet sound better haha!
dude your videos are awesome! I didn't expect such an insanely high quality video from a small creator, and i'm impressed! I'm definitely gonna keep watching!
i your setup allows it id image youd be able to use your lav mic during your demonstrations that way theres no noise from boosting the gain on your voice
Good question. As far as I know, there's pretty standard sizes for trombone mutes. It would just sit a little further inside the bell than it would for a standard tenor trombone.
You're welcome! However, I will say if you're looking into getting a bucket mute (which I didn't have in the video) I do believe you'd have to look for a slightly larger size for a bass trombone as those mutes clip into the outside of the bell.
@@_israelferraro this is a sink plunger! Google sink plunger vs toilet plunger. Toilet plungers have a different shape that might give you a different sound

@@_israelferraro cool stuff and nice vid! I just got a trombone last week and am learning the ins and outs (no pun intended) of the instrument. It’s fun!
@@_israelferraro honestly, I never write any music because I can make a pretty chord progression with fancy music theory, but the melody slips through my fingers when I try to write it. All the theory courses and fancy tutorials in the world couldn't fix a bad melody.
I can definitely resonate with that. Some compositions I make end up being more melody driven and others more harmonically driven even if that wasn't the intention at first haha! But that's totally okay!
Here's a couple techniques that help me when I'm going for more melody than harmony: 1. Write the melody first regardless of what harmony you have in mind at first. Then compose a chord progression around that. You may end up with a slightly different progression than you had in mind, but as long as you trusted your ear, you'll definitely have a progression that supports your melody. Sometimes discovering the harmony along the way is the fun part! 2. Have chord changes less frequently in your composition. Without the harmony changing as much or as often, you create more wiggle room to construct a melody that doesn't clash with your more forgiving harmony.
Came for the plunger, stayed for the beats ‼️‼️🔥
This seems like a video you’d find with like 30k likes and triple the amount in views, but I’m massively surprised what I’m seeing. You deserve a sub.
Many thanks! 🙏 We're gonna get to those numbers! Look out 2025!
underrated channel wth
Loved the little feature of the instruments with their mutes at the end! Wonderful work and I can't wait to see where you go next!
was surprised to see this channel only has 351 subs at this time, hope u blow up soon
Thank you🥹
Nice vid. The algorithm will push you to the front soon enough. Keep up the quality
how cool! I never knew “thin & raspy” was a roast- that particular sound reminds me of the Swing era, thank you for the knowledge!!

Absolutely unlawful that you don't have atleast 100k, subbed
We're getting there one day! Thanks so much for the support in these begining stages though🙏
you have a big future ahead of you, even to people who dont really indulge in jazz, you'll definitely get people to love it

Yeah definitely! Mutes were a common thing used for brass instruments in that era of music!

I guess didn't compose too much of a melody in the examples lol. It was mostly to show what the mutes sounded like with my instruments.
