One time I couldn’t find a triangle beater so my solution was to hit the triangle with another triangle. Idk what was wrong with me.
One time I had this mallet solo test and I had only practiced the first four measures so I just played the rhythms and not the notes. And that was the only assignment in band class that I got and F on.

I was the bass 5 player in my school this last season and in our third movement, we had this impact thing where I was playing this triplet, kinda Mars sounding drum thing with the flats. I was the only bass playing it. The drill had us moving forward like quite a bit so I was crabbing. The snares and the tenors were almost 20 yards away from me because we were in this massive arc set. It was absolute hell to line up. And I couldn't really see them either because it's bass 5. And keep in mind, this was my first year on battery in highschool.

I finally was able to play pieces correctly until this year when I had a part of a piece in Ab, so I started getting constantly told to play the note right again. Long story short, read key signatures correctly.

You mentioned about the distance and timing issue. I just realised my first ever (and so far only) show that I marched in (we never finished it because of people quiting) had a part that actually was even harder than having a tenor solo coming in right after a turn to the front.
In one of the sets the percussion section actually had to split up to both sides of the field facing eachothers backs for a good 24 beats until turning 180 degrees to march back to the center. So besides the distance and therefore sound delay getting bigger and bigger with each step we not only had no sound reference, we also had no visual for those 24 beats on either the drum major or eachother to keep it together.

11:40 the opposite happened for me. I played front line mallet percussion in my high school’s marching band. Senior year, I play xylophone just as the drumline comes in from way back in the backfield. Trying to listen to the one snare playing, and come in on time with them, and seeing the drum majors being on time but a little ahead f the sound getting to me made sure I always sucked at my entrance, coming in too fast and too early. Very beginning of the show, and it’s a very noticeable mess up since it’s xylophones, they cut through anything! I slow down with the measure but it sounds *awful*
Here’s the show, I’m on the far left. Always struggled with that entrance. ua-cam.com/video/kvmtwmyXTvI/v-deo.html show starts around 3:30

i have recently made a new friend really quickly deeply - i.e. she is a recent really close friend. We share a lot together and spend a lot of time together and I have been sharing things (like art projects and other creative things) that I am really proud of. It was only after a while when I expressed surprise at picking up something quite easily where she made an "of course you did" kinda comment, that I realised she didn't pick up on the fact I ONLY share things that I am confident in, and ONLY start new things that I can see have a low barrier to entry. I was flattered that she thinks I am very able (or smart or skilled or whatever) but a really embarrassed that she doesn't realise how much of a fraud I am. I just never try at anything I might not take to easily.

I couldn’t read music till my junior year, so basically two years of marching band and indoor learning music by ear and only using the sheets for the sticking lol.
Another one is I’m naturally left handed but I forced myself to learn how to play righty when I started learning drum set. I really only played rock and metal till high school so when I did flams I did them however it was comfortable for me (all left handed with the grace note essentially at the same height at the accent). Flash forward to high school I made the snare line and I went a whole year without ever realizing there was a difference between left handed and right handed flams. They fixed the grace note height issue but somehow never noticed my flams were lefty. Enter sophomore year and we got some new staff who marched and taught the Cadets and one of them noticed I played all my flams lefty. He was like bro right handed flams have the right hand higher. But again I didn’t realize righty flams have the left hand as the grace note so basically my left handed flams were correct but right handed flams ended up being malfs. Needless to say the entire drum staff was dumbfounded 😂

My most vivid memory at sucking at a drumming thing was the first time I tried to play quarter notes on the hi hat while playing the bass drum on the & of 2. The idea that my foot could do something in between notes my right hand was playing was something my brain was not ready to process.
Also, it took me until my sophomore year of college to get my left hand to do and look like my right hand when I played.

Been a while since I’ve been in band(started college the fall after Covid hit) but I am pleased to say I will be returning to it this spring. Back when I was in band playing tbn I remember distinctly struggling with up beats for some odd reason. The other thing was not really my fault but junior year due to a miscommunication between our drill writer and director props moved without anyone stationed to move them so we had to find people to move them but I’ll let you guys guess what happened the first rehearsal with props.

Once in highschool marching band regionals it was cold enough that it was lightly snowing. The band tuned according to an electric tuner (dr beat I assume) to the usual intended pitch. Of course, we in the pit (sideline percussion) had no way of tuning our instruments so we were easily 20-30 cents or worse sharp... nothing we could do at that point but ignore the wrong sounding notes and go by muscle memory. Oh how I wish they would have tuned off of us instead... but it rarely gets that cold during season in the south
