      it's so sad that's true. People put 200$ dollars on any fkin sht they see on instagram by an influencer. Daniel wellington and those brands are the beats by dre of the watch world. actually there are some seriously well build and nicely build watches, auto and quartz, in kickstarter, a lot of bulshit too, but many of these brands is small startups of real watch people assembling watches in a small place, hiring professional people from real watchmakers, not buying 1000 pieces of crap from china and selling them to an inteligence offensive price.

    watch guy here... the other day my friend received a complement on his mvmt watch from a lady, while I was wearing a speedy pro. So most can't tell the difference of a great watch vs fashion watch. I find 2 types of people in the high end of the watch game... people who want to show theyre rich and people who appreciate the craft and history. If your not one of those people get whatever you want.

    I actually wanted a daniel Wellington or mvmt but never got one. I realized how cheaply they were made and started to hate them. I don't judge people that wear them but I know that they are definitely not knowledgeable in watches. I now have an automatic seiko 5 and orient bambino

      You've never had one but you realize how cheaply they were made & hate them? I wear one & if you sat & had a conversation with me you would know that I do know & love many brands but at $100 the MVMT watches are the best in my opinion. They look gorgeous & they get noticed.

    • @masonatkinson6681
      @masonatkinson6681 6 років тому +56

      Tracy Stephens sure they look nice but I talked to some guy on Instagram who started his own brand. He would give me the best prices and offered me an mvmt voyager for $14 with no logo. This alone let's me know how cheap it is to make these. You can wear what you want, but I personally would go with a seiko if you're going to spend over 100 on a mvmt

    • @masonatkinson6681
      @masonatkinson6681 6 років тому +33

      Tracy Stephens I just really don't like the fact how much they mark them up and people still buy them. My automatic seiko should still be running for another 20 years and your mvmt, if you decide to still have it, will have gone through around 8-10 batteries

    • @tracystephens5014
      @tracystephens5014 6 років тому +5

      Mason Atkinson You make this claim based on what? I haven't seen a Seiko that I think is stunning. I like a watch to look simple & sweet. I've found that in MVMT. I think Omega & Rolex make stunning watches but I'm too active to justify that. $100 for the looks of MVMT is spot on. You can wear your watch for 20 yrs & for that entire time my wrist will 9 out of 10 times get more head turns. If a $100 watch that looks beautiful lasts me 2yrs then I'm happy.

    I don't mind certain companies that use this method, especially if the watch is actually well designed.

      A 1,000USD watch has a level of engineering and quality these things don't. These are no different than 40USD WalMart watches being sold to unsuspecting suckers for 5X their actual worth. Repulsive and dishonest.

    • @kadajawi6567

      Because if you buy a proper watch for 1000 dollars, you'll also get some craftsmanship (unless you go for fashion brands perhaps). You'll get an automatic movement, and one that is well crafted. Watch the videos by Watchfinder & Co. to get a sense of it. I'm not a big fan of the type of watches that Watchfinder likes to talk about, but it gives you a sense of what went into them, and it's really well produced. There's also a video where they compare a 4000 dollar with a 70000 dollar watch (or something like that), and you can actually see and understand why one of them is worth 20 times as much. It's in the details, the way each component, visible or not, is polished to perfection. How complicated solutions are created and made just to make the seconds move a bit smoother, to make the jump of the minute hand crisper.
      For a bit more than 1000 you can get an entry level NOMOS watch, which follows the Bauhaus style just like many of these new brands, but has some heritage to it, and is made in Germany. It uses a manual watch movement and is well crafted (and better designed IMHO). It uses higher quality materials. DW et al. don't do any of these. Their claim to offer the same kind of watch and quality is just false.

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 6 років тому +1

      Agreed, as long as they don't lie about what it is, i'll gladly buy a cheap watch. It's a 10$ ebay watch. Just admit it and i'll consider buying it just because it looks good.

  • @Fadeway91
    @Fadeway91 6 років тому +21

    I consider myself a watch guy. Don't have any high-end pieces but I'm loving my Seiko SARB017. The thing is luxury watches is like any other luxury consumption. You'll get the people who only buys it because it's expensive, but you'll also have the people who appriciate the craftsmanship behind the watches. If you want a watch for only the purpose of telling time, then yes a quartz watch is much more reasonable to get. But for me it's the engineering behind it that captivated me. Take an perpetual calendar watch. It will tell you the time, moon phase, year, day and date and it will account for if it's a leap year and still be accurate. All this with the help of a spring and some cogs and wheels, within the case of a dimension of 40mm. That's some impressive engineering. The best way to know that your a watch geek and appreciate the design and look of a watch is simple. It's when you look down at your watch to tell the time, then return to whatever you were doing and then remember that you forgot to tell the time, you looked at the watch but not the time ;)

      It doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. All you can really wear anyway would be, oh maybe... 1 edc watch for work, 1 dress watch, 1 beater watch for the gym, 1 waterproof watch for the zombie apocalypse. That's 4 watches, plus straps and or bracelets. Of course if luxury is your thing then all bets are off.

    I have a Rolex GMT II, it was a gift from my father. It is by far my favorite watch, and I often feel guilty when I wear other watches. I have Bulova, mvmt, Timex, Nixon, and Suunto. It almost feels counterfeit wearing cheap watches after wearing the Rolex. You said it all in this video, the cheap watches don't have the heritage and craftsmanship. Wearing a finely built timepiece makes me feel grateful and inspired. Just wanted to share that with you.
    Keep up the good work, sir!

    I bought the Seiko SNK789 for $80, which has an automatic movement. I bought an affordable leather strap for $25. Now, I have a sports watch that works great as a dress watch too with the leather band on it. Changing the strap is super easy to gives any watch a new look and feel. If your looking at any brands in the middle of the Swatch triangle, you may be able to afford a Stowa. They have great watches, not too expensive, and Stowas are absolutely beautiful.

    Being a watch collector, I really appreciate any watch that is fancy and stylish and is rather reliable. I prefer a mechanical movement over a quartz movement. But I’ve had cheap watches where the hands don’t stay in place therefore making it lose time. One in particular was my favorite, an Omejei watch where the bezel was see through and the movement was displayed clearly. But the hands would spin around the shaft of the movement and lose time because it was a cheap knockoff watch. But the design was beautiful. The Fifth Watch that I chose to add to my collection was recommended by “Real Men Real Style” on UA-cam. The design aspect of it I became attached to. It’s a beautiful design as well. I just recently ordered the rose gold version which I really dig.

    Never been a fan of the MVMT/Daniel Wellington school of watches. Both on the quality front, but also aesthetic front. I also think the watches are too big, 40-42mm is often too large for my wrist, especially for a watch with a minimal face, the proportions are off. Another solid video, well done.

    interesting topic and take. I think some of your info may not be up to date. For example, I believe the Swiss have recently tightened the criteria under which a watch may have the "Swiss" designation; furthermore there are actually differences in quality of quartz movements, with better ones vibrating in frequencies in excess of 30 000 hz, vs 15 000 for cheaper ones.

    Great info. I had the "Swiss" Tissot that quit work after three years. I brought it to a jeweller -he put a battery in it and didnt respond. He came to the conclusion that it needed cleaning and would be a $300 charge?? luck would be, I said I can buy a new watch for that price...and did. This was about year 2005 and I just shelved the watch and recently looked up the info on its movement. Has a ETA movement worth $49 Swiss francs. All the jeweller would have done back then is replace the OEM movement and charge for cleaning. I recently opened the Tissot for fun and removed the movement . It looks like a plastic resin case with a cheap looking gear train, pretty much sealed up "moduler" like, that cant be worked on, faster to just replace like a motherboard on a PC. So beware a $500 watch can have a $49 movement...Cheers

    • @scm11904

      StylEd Men seiko snk80_ the last digit changed upon the color. Some call it the starter automatic because it's so cheap. Seiko, orient, citizen make really good watches both automatic and quartz but you can't go wrong with an automatic from any of these brands and can get them under a 100 bucks

    • @The_Kavalier
      @The_Kavalier  6 років тому

      Not "Bad"- as long as you like it, it serves your needs, and you enjoy wearing it then it's a win. For many quartz pieces they are produced in high volumes which reduces the rarity thus unlikely that it will hold value in the long term. So as an "investment" those will not be the best but it depends on how you want to do the math.

    I am a MVMT owner.... man do I love that watch, it feels good and looks good and not only the aesthetic (cuz I’ve been complimented on my rose gold revolver 40mm quite a bit) but because it has a feel to it, I love the look and love the way it dresses, fashion wise it’s great and it has an elegance to it, not all mvmt watches get that, I just picked the one fitted me the most, some will like it some others won’t but it gives me the time when I need it to and is a really nice accessory with nice leather to it.... people can judge and criticize and what not but doesn’t really faze me at all, honestly it’s been great and MVMT itself has not only amazing customer service but also really good aesthetics so yea

    Also very important, the continued serviceability of watches from non fashion brands. Everything about the movements, crowns etc are beefier and are fixed instead of replaced. Small consumable parts are replaces after decades. They continue to make parts for your watch, essentially forever. So if you have a heirloom, you know theres always a factory it can go back to to keep it ticking. Tag Hueur might be over priced, but you can keep an Aquaracer forever.

      Fashion watches aren't really cheap at all, especially considering the low effort from the brand's part that goes in to them (as the OP said he basically made his own watch, ready to sell with basically little to no expertise). A Swatch or a Timex can be much cheaper (20-40$), yet come with tons of heritage. Or a made in Japan Seiko automatic for that matter can cost less than a "cheap" Chinese made fashion watch. Value is key.

    Hey Jon I'm new to watches and menswear in general. My wife got me a beautiful stainless steel Stuhrling for Christmas that actually tells great time, so I'm thinking I really like cool watches and would like to own more. Can you recommend something under $100 that has the look of a vintage Patek Philippe? Basically what I want is something with a brown leather band that's classy, dressy, and very simple and elegant without the price tag of a luxury Swiss watch. Any ideas?

  • @TheGnurgen

    I just got a MVMT watch, as my first watch ever. I know its not the best, but as a starter watch, to see if it even suits me to wear a watch, I think its pretty nice. I like the look and I can easily afford the price. And if I discover that watches are not for me, then its not an unreasonable amount of money wasted.
    But if I do end up loving watches, then im well aware that I will upgrade at some point, but for now im pretty happy with my watch :)

      I wouldn't say that the mark-up is the sole reason but it's a large part of it. To me the difference is the craftsmanship and traditional nature of watches but it is all very subjective. I think if you like the style of a 5th watch then go for it! Just know what you're getting.

    7:35: 'Price quality heritage', is the argument here.
    The point of interest for mechanical watches is the engineering wonder it is to immediately convert a tiny level of physcial exertion (winding it, incidental movement for automatics) translates into what used to be an incredibly important tool. Its some old romanticism, its some doomsday conservatism, some vanity, and some interest in mechanical engineering.

    As someone who bought an MVMT a couple of years ago, I agree completely with your video. I read all the reviews on these watches that I can find, and I guess I’m fortunate that mine is still running at two years. The band started falling apart after a few months, and eventually had to be replaced. One of the buttons has now fallen off. At the time I bought it I knew I was overpaying, that it was really a $50 watch, but I liked the style so I bought it anyway. As I am becoming more knowledgeable about watches, I have started buying inexpensive yet high-quality watches such as Timex Seiko, Citizen and others. These watches are much more satisfying and enjoyable to own.
    I do disagree on your contention that all Chinese and Japanese watches are low-quality, and all Swiss watches are good. According to the UA-camrs I follow, who know watches extremely well, there are very good Chinese and Japanese watches, and really terrible Swiss watches. You just can’t tell from where the watch was made. There are some excellent videos on how to tell high-quality watch regardless of where it was made. There are even some high-quality work swatches from Timex, Seiko and others.

    I had Casio's and never more than $19.99 my entire youth and teenage life and thought expensive watches were 'stupid.' Then I was given a Citizen's Eco Drive back in 2007 and my opinion changed, that watch STILL to this day looks bran new something no cheep watch I ever owned could claim in the same time-frame. I've expanded my 'Nice' watch collection dramatically over the past 10 years and am still amazed how the watches are still crystal clear and the metal has never faded or lost their plating. Everybody should get at least one decent watch in their life, started a new hobby for me when I did lol.

    Great video and I like the tone. I too am just getting into watches and have definitely noticed the animosity towards "fashion watches". I can understand some hate that these watches get, as there is a level of craftsmanship that appears to be lost to these manufacturers, however I disagree with the watch snobs that look down upon people who buy fashion watches. I personally find the design of mvmt watches very appealing. Could I find a tissot in a similar price range with a similar design? Possibly but the "heritage" argument is stale. Should traditional watch makers feel threatened by newcomers with Chinese built watches, isn't it up to them to do something about it? Doesn't the consumer win as a result of increased competition anyway?
    Buy what the watch you want to buy and love the watch you want to love.
    And to watch snobs everywhere: Educate those who show and interest in horology, not everyone you see who spent $80 more than they should've on a watch.
