The Only 3 Watches You Really Need | Beginner Watch Collection for Men

  • Here's a budget friendly watch collection that consists of just three watches and costs less than $500 total (for all three). If you want to have a watch for every occasion (casual, business casual, formal, etc.), but you don't want to (or can't) spend a ton of money buying watches, this is the perfect watch collection for you.
    01:41 Timex Weekender - geni.us/3yxA50y
    03:12 Seiko SKX013 - geni.us/W7ob8
    05:10 Dress (Better than The 5th) - geni.us/4FpmT (Amazon)
    If you have some extra cash and want to expand your watch collection, I recommend adding a fourth watch that's totally different than the first three (like my all black watch from The 5th), or buying some extra straps for your watches that have interchangeable bands.
    Remember: no matter your budget, it's a good idea to have a watch for every occasion, especially formal occasions. You can always upgrade your watches later on, so there's nothing wrong with buying affordable watches right now.
    Of course, if money isn't an issue and you don't mind spending it on watches, you could always buy higher end versions of these three watches - casual, dive and dress.

    In my opinion, the Timex and the Seiko, yes. The flimsy looking The Fifth watches are just trendy fashion watches that will fall out of style quickly.

    • @Ferien7
      @Ferien7 6 років тому +10

      Patrick Lau Nope. Timeless designs never go out of style regardless of manufacturing quality. Fashion watches are here to stay and generally, they are considered to be much more attractive than japanese and swiss watches.

      Right on the nose. And you can't really teach people who believe that fashion watches are worth the money when they are not. They just have to find out for themselves when one day they look at that drawer full of junky watches and realize that they could have bought a few grown-up watches and been set.

      Laurens Arthur One very simplistic alternative is the Junghans Max Bill version. I think its impossible to find the design of fashion watches unpleasing to the eye. However, their design can also just be called straight up lazy. The Junghans Max Bill is a watch with horological history, designed by the famous minimalist artist Max Bill. Take a look at the Junghans please, because whilst much more expensive they offer so much more in a watch compared to the average MVMT or DW watch.

      David Childers bambinos suck. Mineral glass, odd case size, wrong lug width (horrible design choice as you cannot change the strap), not minimalistic enough. Very overhyped watch.

    • @Ijuststopthepucksbro
      @Ijuststopthepucksbro 6 років тому +79

      21mm isn't "wrong," it's just uncommon for lugs. eBay has you covered with plenty of 21mm straps... So saying that you "cant change the strap" is just a naked lie.
      Odd case size? They're 41mm. Unless you're complaining that 41 is an odd number (and please tell me you're not), the Bambino fits almost all men's wrists.
      Not minimalistic enough? Indices, chapter ring, Dauphine hands, date window. Is that too much? Or should we all just wear Movados?
      Enlighten us Ferien7: give me an automatic dress watch for $150 with sapphire crystal that blows a Bambino out of the water.

If you went to Teddy Baldassarre’s channel he details it better than I can, but the Fifth, Daniel Wellington, and MVMT are all the same fashion watches being sold to gullible customers thinking they’re getting something quality made.

      I am in the same boat...as I am 6'6" and an ex-football player, with a 23 cm wrist. I mainly wear 50-52 mm watches...which is usually a G Shock, or a Diesel. Diesel is sold on Amazon dot com and they have some pretty cool looking watches for under $200. For a dress watch, you can always get a rectangular shaped watch. Bulova, Seiko, Swiss Legend, Eterna and others all make nice looking watches that are pretty reasonably priced. I like the rectangular shape because they do have a classy look to them.

    Casual: timex weekender Chrono ( my favorite)
    Beater: any casio/ g shock watches (but my favorite is the classic and cheap casio f-21w)
    - as someone who work at sea, this is the ultimate watch for me. Cheap lightweight and for the price, it is suprisingly sturdy. Given how cheap it is, there is no problem having extras.
    Dress: orient bambino

  • @walkerj.7895
    @walkerj.7895 5 років тому +42

    Even cheaper way to go, without sacrificing too much quality:
    Everyday:
    Seiko SNK807 (or really any other Seiko 5 for a little more)
    $73.98
    Dress:
    Orient bambino version 2
    $114.99
    Beater:
    Casio G-Shock GMW5610-1
    $92.68
    Some people prefer a cheap diver for their beater/sports watch. But I personally love the style of this G-Shock (very minimal and small compared to normal G-Shocks you see daily) and it is packed to the brim with features. Of course these are all just my opinion. Part of the fun of Horology is seeing how people’s taste in watches differ from yours!

  • @WeaverJ576

    I like this take on watch collecting. I would recommend the Seiko 5 SNK809 as the casual watch ($55), a Orient Bambino 1 as the dress watch ($95), and a Orient Mako 2 or an Orient Ray 2 for the diver (~$180 - $190). The SKX is a highly popular dive watch, sports the 7S26 Seiko movement (Seiko's workhorse), and is an icon in it's own right; it's not a bad watch to have, however I'd much prefer the hacking/handwinding movement of the Orient Ray 2 or Mako 2 (similar to Seiko's 4R36 movement). All of these watches are automatics, which is what I prefer, but to each his/her own.
    Great video and great thoughts on watch collecting! Keep up the good work!

    I owned 21 watches. I loved Casios. I wanted to be seen with a different watch every day. But I got bored with the cheapos, and when I learned about battery leaks I de-commissioned all of them (except the classic Swiss Army watch) by removing the batteries. I recently bought two Seikos and became "married" to them, forsaking all others. The Only Three Watches I Really Need:
    1. Every Day - Seiko SKX 013 K1. For me, the perfect watch because it's beautiful, masculine, respectable and washable.
    2. Dress - Seiko SUP880. Bigger and more beautiful than the Cartier Tank. And it's solar!
    3. Field Watch - Swiss Army watch. I seldom wear it anymore, but it's a classic and it's been all over the world with me for 30 years.

    I'm a watch collector and here's my take on this video:
    if you don't have a big budget skip the casual watch. You don't really need one.
    Buy a diver instead; because these can be worn with anything (casually or for formal events).
    If you already have a diver buy a dress watch next (to mix it up).
    That's it. That's literally all you need.
    Once you save up some money you can then buy yourself what I like to call an "heirloom" piece.
    A watch that's good enough to be given away as an heirloom. One of my personal favorites is the Omega Seamaster. This watch is the only watch that's approved for space travel by NASA. It's also the only watch that has been to space. This watch is almost indestructible (it's really sturdy and looks amazing). And best of all it's not too expensive; you can get one for a really good price if you buy it second hand. Rolex watches are nice too but IMHO they're a little bit too flashy. Omegas are more affordable.

      So much wrong information lol.
      First of you meant the Speedmaster not seamaster.
      also there have been many watches in space, also the speedmaster is not even the first in space, but first on the moon.
      The first watch in space was the poljot strela.
      Also Bulova, Sinn, Fortis also have all been to space.

    • @stritlit
      @stritlit 7 років тому

      AntonioKowatsch yeah the seamaster is a dive watch and never went to space. that was the speedmaster, secondly what he probably meant by a casual watch is a beater watch. not everybody is okay with scuffing their 200Dollar watch, for some people that's serious money. And Speedmaster isn't indestructible, the model they sell to the common man is not the same as the one that went to space, bar the few limited edition pieces.

    You might as well go with 4 watches for $500 and add "the beater", Casio F91W. Probably the best watch for around the house, office, manual labor, sport activities, drinking night. It's so light and low profile, it's like you don't even have it on your wrist, pretty durable, but if you break it, you can get another one right away. More than that, it's a trip in the past. You'll definitely get some nods from 90s generation.

    Nice entry video into watches. I'm not a believer in having to have watches for certain occasions but you can't go wrong with the Weekender, or Timex Expedition Scout and the SKX is one of the best sub $500 watches you can buy. As for a dress watch (which I think can also be worn at any time) I'd opt for something vintage. An Omega is my choice and isn't a great deal more. You would need to have a smaller wrist though.

    Hard to argue with a $30 Timex. Seiko SKX is a great buy. But you will get laughed out of the boardroom wearing that dress watch. How about a nice vintage OMEGA Seamaster for under $350? Or a Seiko SARB033 if you want to buy new. Major upgrade.

  • @OneTalaw
    @OneTalaw 6 років тому +9

    Brock, I like your content but you can get away with one watch for any/all occasions (a simple Seiko or Timex with 3 hands) the key is simplicity coupled with bracelet/strap selections. NATO or rubber for the beach, metal for casual up to but NOT including a suit and leather for more formal attire. One watch with a few straps for much less than $400.

    Diver: Orient Kamasu - $230
    I love this watch, as the amount of watch you get for this price is unbelievable. A completely in-house F6922 automatic movement, which is extremely reliable and packed with hand-winding and hacking. Majority of other automatic watches at this price point to not offer a sapphire crystal, let alone a diver.
    Casual: Seiko SNK809 - $70
    This was my very first automatic watch, and I wear it nearly everyday as it is extremely versatile, has a very reliable movement, and it can't be beaten at this price.
    Dress: Orient Bambino (Gen 2 V1) - $130
    Again, a completely in-house movement with hacking and hand winding, a very attractive design (cream dial with roman numerals, with blue hands is my fav), and again, a hell of a lot of watch for the money.
    Just my personal list but I think a lot of people would have similar choices.

    i have been looking for a decent watch for almost all occasions and eventually bought a seiko sarb. great movement and overall quality. it looks dressy on a leather strap and casual (but not too casual) on a nato strap or the metal strap it comes with.
    picking an extra "everyday" watch is nonsense in my opinion - a good watch survives everyday use (when you are not a doing particularly hard work) and looks great in all situations.

    Before I got into watches, I had the same old watch for about 10 years ($60 40mm Swiss Pulse Elite Dive like quartz watch), It came with a steel bracelet and I got a James Bond-esq Nato Strap for Hiking/Sports and a Black leather Strap for Dress purposes, it literally stayed on the wrist for years, it told the time. It was relegated to dress duty when I got my first G-Shock and was given a few watches by the family (Inherited a 9ct gold Tissot Seaster mechanical with a wine red crocodile leather strap from my grandad and my dad gave me his Tag Heuer Professional 2000 Automatic with a steel strap, these were beautiful watches and really the two watches that got me into "semi" collecting and lusting over the Swiss made variety. Now I prefer wearing Seiko (Currently Seiko SKX 007 Automatic with the blue and red Pepsi Basel). A fantastic watch.

    I admire your first two choices, not just because I have two similar watches, but I think these are both good quality for the money. However, your choice of the Fifth as your third watch I totally disagree with, as this is a $20 Chinese watch sold for $150. If you hunted around for most of these “style“ watches, you can find the exact same watch, minus the logo, on Amazon for less than $50. My third choice would be an Orient Bambino, which is a very well-made, very stylish watch available in numerous styles and colors, for $130 or less. Also, any Seiko or Timex for under $100 is a better watch than the Fifth. Even Citizen or Invicta, for the most part, are better.
    Of course, to each his own, and some people are happy to spend $150 for a $20 watch that they like. It’s your money, so spend it as you please!

My 2 cents for viewers: for the same budget, do some homework and get a (mechanical) watch you love - something in the dress or diver categories - and then dress it down with a Nato strap (or other strap) for the more casual situations. Now you've got the start to a real collection, not just throw away pieces.
