Got these thinking they were the slightly larger Panfish floats ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.
I'm sitting here in South Korea loving this. I'm from North Carolina and I've been fishing all my life. I love making my own terminal tackle. My 12 year old daughter finally decided to go fishing with me and caught her first fish last week (a huge bluegill). Now that winter is setting in here, I plan on working with her on her knots, rigs and maintaining her gear. Thanks for this video. I do believe she and I have great project now.

I find bobbers when picking up trash when fishing and have a box full..I don’t use bobbers so I give them to kids. Now I feel like making one and using it 😂. I will definitely be making a topwater plug to try on bass. Excellent tests and tips. Great ideas and explanations.Thanks very much for sharing! God Bless

I haven't used a float in years. I remember making floats out of wine corks painting them half white and half black and had many happy hours just waiting for them to go under water. Then I made the simplist float ever a straw with the ends melted they were the biz. Thanks for the memories I never had any as fancy as your ones they are a work of art. You'd cry if you lost one. 😪 Another great video. 🍻 cheers.

Some cool video's. Another way is to use Bolsa dowl as it's already round and a belt sander. Lay the sander upside down if it's a hand held one and roll the wood between your fingers to form your shape. If you get it right you can get the wood to spin in between your fingers without flighing out to get a more uniform shape. This is easier for slimmer long body type floats (bobber). You can knock them out in like 5min each . Cheers from South Africa.

Really liked what you were doing here; testing the buoyancy of the different material, and especially making your own balsa wood bobbers. My Mom, who taught me and my brother how to fish about 60 years ago, made what we called "floats" out of pieces of cork. She would make a hole in a cork (I guess it came from a bottle) and then run the fishing line through the hole and then get a twig to slide into the hole to pinch the line and hold the cork at the depth (level) she wanted it. Good memories!
I know what you mean , I think about fishing with my dad a lot when I'm making some if this stuff , I wish I would have thought about putting cork in the test but really the balsa was my main concern. Note that I know it works good I'll be making something out of it soon . I really appreciate your comments brother
If you want to minimize the runout on your 'vertical lathe' setup, you can run the bottom of the threaded rod into a short piece of cut off gel pen ink tube from a used up pen with and ID that fits tight over the rod. Poly tube from a craft store in the right ID works also, but costs a little. I drill a hole just barely larger than the OD of the ink tube into a block of 2x4 that is clamped on the drill table and use that setup to contain the wobbling threaded rod. The ink tube is smooth enough that there is very little friction while spinning in the hole in the block. Works great. Just about like a lathe dead center would.
As far as bobbers go, I went to a local winery here in these parts, that still use the old cork stoppers, at the end of the tasting season, and got me a plastic walmart shopping bag full. Glue the fat ends together and then turn to desired shape. Works good as a slip float with a plastic stir stick like for coffee. You have to trim the straw down close to the cork as the line splits the straw and hangs up if you don't...

@Clete Miller you might be right . But balsa wood sealed correctly beats foam . I didn't really seal it correctly . Plus my very first video I used wine bottle corks . They work really good
Depending on how much of this you want to do, another idea I had is get a bearing that the inside is the same as the shaft. Use a spade bit and drill into the block of wood just enough to secure the outer part of the bearing but allow the inner part to spin. Secure this block to the drill press table with your vertical shaft in the inside center of the bearing and you wont have any load-up on your drill press motor as the bottom wouldn't have any friction, yet would have the side support to stop the shaft wobble. @@FishinNStuff Well, yes and no...but I have a brother in-law that was a machinist mate in the Navy that way over thinks stuff and he used to tinker around with things at my sisters house. He made his own wood lathe, actually two of them. One for doing longer pieces, and one to turn wooden bowls out of log pieces. He also made a metal lathe using an old slant six engine block for the base. Age and health issues has pretty much got him sidelined.
Me, I'm a disabled Vet. (Knees, and back problems from a couple of problems while in the service), and a limited income. So pretty much, if I want something, it's either save up for it, or make it, if I can...

I do a lot of lathe work and make lures and pens. To keep hole more straight, use a brad-point drill bit. Drilling from both ends is genious. Way to go. Love your vid fish hacks.

I loved this DIY; I like them all.
I have a suggestion to help you with your lathe. Instead of leaving the bottom of the threaded rod loose, drill a hole in the base wood and bring the table closer to the bit. The end will ride in the hole. This will give it a bit more stability and you a free hand.

Make a small hole in the baseplate of the drill press and lower the rod so it just sits inside the hole. That will help keep the rod from wiggling so much and you can put a little more pressure on the wood.

Heres a tip for you and anyone else that wants to make cheap bobbers (floats). I finally got an idea 3 montha ago and I ran with it. I went to a Restaurant called OLIVE GARDEN and asked for as many wine corks as I could get. they are in large glass vases. . Ive used them for bobbers and some I've put together for Demon Dragons as peg floats Some i filled inside of clear tubing for dragging weights. To keep one end up bouyant when dragging. And added wiegh to the bottom end. worked pretty well. God Bless Brother!!
Ive seen the cork bobbers I just didn't think about putting one in the experiment until I was doing it ( which was too late lol ) but I never thought of using em for dragging weights , se that's why I do experiments , too come up with great ideas like that one . That's an awesome idea brother

Good video Keith! I've got a project of making a mini lathe going on in my head, using 2 skateboard bearings with and outside diameter of 7/8ths and interior diameter of 5/16ths and using a 5/16ths threaded rod and using a corded power drill. Like to see a video of you making this or similar. I'm teaching myself of how to make and repair fishing rods, having 2 vintage rods that one needs a good wooden handle, using a old toilet plunger handle, and that needs to be lathed down from 1 in to a little under 5/8ths. After I finish moving and get the workshop set up. My dad's old drill press is going to get a work out ;-) lol This just gave me an Idea to make a small table lathe with a hand drill using the jig you made for the bobbers. making a bearing rest to hold the end of the jig so it doesnt wobble. I have to say you are getting the creativity gears turning. (probably not a good thing at 4am lol)

Just a couple of suggestions regarding bobbers... for shaping the wood and turning it on the vertical drill machine, and to eradicate offsetting and wobble of workpiece, I believe making a hole in the wood block on drill workplate and securing the free end of the rod passing through the wood would help a lot and longer bobber could be turned easier...
The second suggestion was using a piece of soft steel wire or a properly formed paper clip as holder/hanger for sealing or painting the bobbers... I guess this would even give a better sealing inside the through hole :)
Those are good ideas , that was me experimenting with bobber making lol , what I was really doing was testing out balsa wood which I'd never used . But that's great stuff . I made some balsa wood planer boards after making the bobbers check that out it's pretty cool

I myself started making my own lures, metal jigs and balsa minnows for a while now... working with balsa is quite easy and fun too.
For bobbers, I've used foam dowels from dollar stores which come in appropriate diameters. Though, I made my best bobbers out of plastic eggs that could again be obtained from dollar stores. I put holes on both ends drop a couple of bbs in and stick a small plastic tube through the plastic egg. Then apply 5 min epoxy to seal the ends and fix the stick. Just color it with a high visibility fluorescent paint , I prefer orange, and then coat it with epoxy. They work nice and do click..could be also used as a popping cork! :)

Personally I would use pine because you wouldn't need as many sinkers sinkers ain't cheap well they are but if you have to buy them every time you go fishing it adds up
If you really want some distance to go with your cast, try Ash wood for a launcher bobber. Great for reaching Hybrids and striped bass.

Ironically that's where I learned about the clear casing bubble with a chartuese Crappie Magnet under it. When the bass run minnows, near walls is best.

To make the turning easier, raise your table, and use the same bit you drilled the balsa, to drill into a piece of wood, clamped to the table. Then, lower the table, put the assembly into the chuck, and the other in the wood block. That will stop the wobbling.

Some driftwood found at the dry river beds is as close to balsa wood as I've seen.
Here's a little tricky for you. Drill a hole the same size as your threaded rod (a drill will always drill about .008" large). This will keep your threaded rod from bending and running out on you. Go about 1/2" deep.
10:58 to avoid that wobble, drill a hole in your baseplate that's the same size as the threaded rod and lift the baseplate up so the threaded rod is in the hole you drilled. It'll hold the rod more stable

To help with that run out problem, how about a piece of hardwood with a hole drilled in it clamped to your drill table to hold the bottom of your all thread shaft...

You can make a float out of a small empty pill bottle too. Just glue your connector to the middle of the cap.

Balsa also adds extra weight for longer casting distance.
I've never noticed a color problem with a Santee Rig and catfish,I use fluro.red,fluro.red/white,fluro yellow/green 2.5" floats.
"All drills have runout", as of 30? yrs ago most all Jet,Grizzly,Harbor Freight,Wen,Craftsmen,Shop Fox,Ryobi,Porter Cable,etc etc. are of Chinese origin.Most come off the same assembly line,just have different colors and stickers but much different price tags.This also goes for most anything today,but I know the majority of woodworking machinery falls under this scenario.
There are much batter machines like Powermatic,Baileigh,etc. but you'll also pay a lot more for them.
The older machines,like 1970's and older are the better machines and have much much better clearances,creating a lot less runout say on a drill press,is better than todays.
My old Craftsman 113.213130 drill press is only a few .001's of runout.My old Craftsman 103.23831 and 113.27701 table saws are capable of rip cutting a pressure treated 6' 2x6 and be within .5mm,I did make my own T-style fence though.Also many of the older machinery is much cheaper price wise.Both saws and DP cost me a whopping total of $125 and are much better than anything today up to $500 each and many times a lot more.
I agree with you brother the old stuff is better , I didn't mean I have the best tools by any means , my tools seen like junk compared to what I use at work , I was just saying all dogs have a run out and is easier to drill half and half instead of one pass . And i user the florescent floats too and i don't think they hurt anything but they don't help either easy not just paint it black you can't see it in 30 feet of water ? I didn't mean it would help you catch more fish lol . That video eas what i said it was just an experiment on balsa wood because ive got some other things in mind , i fo like the fact its stronger . It was an experiment lolol , I'm thinking about making something else out of this balsa wood because it has all the properties of styrofoam but it's so much stronger
Great video. to help control your run out drill a hole in the wood on your adjustable table and run it up to the bottom of the locking nuts. Clamp down the board it will act as a center.
I actually thought about that after the fact lol , I was trying to hold it , didn't work too good , I think I'll revisit this idea I didn't doi it justice. But the test was what I eas focused on and I learned a lot . The polyurethane soaked in the wood so much I could have hurt the buoyancy of the balsa sho I might re do my test later on

I like wood even here in the north we use popular wood. Try to avoid plastic all together.
You could clamp a piece of wood to your drill press table with a hole drilled in the center that threaded rod would fit in and minimize your drill run out .

There's some videos on here where they use drills as laths they make a wooden frame to hold the drill with a washer on the other end.

I'm surprised you didn't add cork to the test 🤔. As I make alot of my own floats. Some of my friends drink wine, so they save me the bottle corks 😉. And I do the same sort of thing, thow I leav the 3/8 dowling inserted. Then seal the hole float , paint it up. Then whip on a eyelet 🙂.

Man I really appreciate that more than you know , I try and reply to everyone but sometimes I'll miss a comment here or the , UA-cam is bad about not notifying you every single time and when I post a new video it gets over whelming sometimes , I just work on it on my break time at work, I think just like you said , its very cool that ppl took the time to leave a comment I just want to reply, but i understand some ppl don't have accounts si they came subscribe like or comment, my theory is they don't understand utube, to me it's easier than FB , i really appreciate all the support you give brother

I use deacon epoxy 5 minutes to working time. It seals better and is a lot tougher than Polly urethane

I know that this is an older video.. but it's still a good one. My suggestion is instead of polyurethane, I'd go with epoxy & epoxy paint. You wouldn't have runs & bleeding like what you have with the green top bobber
