How did he get this set so early?!
Lol
lol
He must have stolen it from the Lego factory
@@williamneuenschwander829dude. Sarcasm.
@williamneuenschwander829 the comment was sarcasm lol. Also he is not in LAN anymore
These technic sets are so underrated, I remember getting some second hand a few years ago they were a blast to put together
Ryan's face looked like a kid in a candy store when the Destoyer droid pop open!
I mean, technically he is a kid...in a toystore. but he owns all the toys around him, so it is even better.
yep hes living the dream right there
I feel like this droideka still kind of stands up to the 2024 droideka
....literally
Yeah I agree. They're sidegrades of each other. 1 is larger and has an awesome play function while the other looks better and is more displayable.
The new one is nothing but looks, a nice looking empty shell with even more tidious actions required than this one to accomplish nothing. This original one just IS a droideka and still you can argue that the technic robotic aspect of the old one is really fitting.
@@marcbiosa-roberteau7061 I'd say looking 1:1 as a movie droideka is not acomplishing nothing. I agree that the play functions of the old one are cool but it was aimed for kids. This new one is aimed for adults so it makes sense it won't have that good play functions.
Roll to pop out feature gotta be one of the best play features in a Lego Star Wars set ever! :)
"isn't that just awesome? it's just awesome!" pretty much summarizes this Droideka and its playfunction
They could release this set today and it would legitimately be good.
I bet you it would kick this new ones ass just the function alone of it rolling back into position
LEGO could reprint literally dozens of old sets that are now out of print (for example, 7662 and 7665) and make huge buttloads of money
Crazy how an AAT made of technic somehow has better proportions than the 2020 brick built version
Technic used to be superior.
@@BrickTemplarthey’ve been making a comeback lately
Can't wait for the comparison
“ Master Destroyers!”
Actually those destroyers were on the council but weren't granted the rank of master
It’s really great to see you doing these reviews of older sets that no one else would do or spend the time and effort on, especially the alternate build. What a great set, though I do really love the look of the new one that’s about to come out.
The technic pit droid (8000) and battle droid (8001) both have alternate builds included in the instructions. Pit droid is a speeder bike and the battle droid is an AT-ST.
I loved building an at-st out of the battle droid. Like the pit droids opening play feature, the battle droid could be folded like they are in an mtt and then would pop open to standing, and you could raise its arm to grab the gun from the back holster.
The amount on accurate play features on these technique sets was something else. The battle droid even came with additional pieces which allowed you to change the colouring to a security droid (red) or a commander (yellow).
Technic R2-D2 and C-3PO also have alternate builds, being some kind of starships.
The ATST Head can rotate with a gear , i remember it !
I still have it built, 24 years!!! but it does need new rubber bands. They all failed over time. Thanks for this, and as you say. Best play feature for a SW set ever.
I always admired this set in the old visual dictionary
2:40 underrated joke 😂
Feels like old man yells at cloud moment, but early LEGO sw sets had a charm that is in no way carried through to today's sets. Not just nostalgia either, but filled with creativity.
I feel so lucky that i was gifted this as a kid from my uncle. despite it being out of box the whole thing is still intact with all parts needed for the droid. Sadly i cannot find the original instructions and all the rubber bands have worn down and snapped from how much i used it 😅.
Definitely has to be my favourite technic set or even lego set in general.
I have a pdf of the original instructions. I have them saved so I can one day build it. but I can send it to you as well if you want them. as far as I can see it does have the amendments with the red rubber ban as well.
I have the Technic Battle Droid from this series. Maybe the coolest set I own. Can fold up and pop open. Can also draw its blaster from a holster on its back using magnets. And it came with extra colored pieces so you can build it as a standard battle droid, red security battle droid, or yellow command battle droid. Found it for like $100 last year, unopened
I didn't know about the color options. That's awesome and makes me kind of want to get that set eventually. I love commander B1 Battle Droids.
Ever since the new Droideka got revealed, I was hoping you would do a review on this! Great review as always! Can't wait for a comparison video, and the 2000 UCS Tie Interceptor review as well!
Had this and the other two droid sets when they first came out - sold them at profit when I moved house a few years back. The droideka still worked so I feel good about its longevity chances
Review the technic hailfire droid next! It's basically a UCS version of the hailfire droid
The second SW Lego set that I ever bought.
Picked this up ~10 years ago for $60 or so. Nobody seemed to want it then, but I thought it had the absolute best lego feature ever. It's not often that the lego set does exactly what the thing in the movie does. The rubber bands have since snapped/turned to dust, but I've found non-lego replacements that work well for me. What I've found:
Some of the rubber bands like to be tighter than others for the functions to work well - trial different sizes
Carpet or similar is better than a floor/table surface
I think one day I'll try and do a design update on this with more modern technic/system bricks. I also tried (and failed) to get an old mindstorms brick motor into it so that after a certain number of rolls, it would automatically open instead of just one. Maybe with more modern lego robotics, something like that is possible - or maybe even just putting the mechanism on a timer would suffice.
I'd love to see Lego SW/Technic return. I think an AT-AT, a Droideka, and maybe an IG-11 would be a decent place to start. Also - I think if we ever get a motorized walking AT-ST, it'll have to be technic.
This is such a cool slice of Lego Star Wars History. 1999-2001 were pretty rough for the most part but this is awesome. Idk if the next time I get 300 dollars for lego I'll be spending it on this, but who knows
My Uncle has this when he was little. When I was little, he gave it to me. I said thank you and everything but secretly didn’t like it because it looked ugly to me and it has since been lost to the bin of doom.
I want it back. I want it back so much.
"Bin of doom"?
Do you have the parts or not?
@@veloxsterinkognito7512 I have a parts all mixed in with parts from other sets and I just don’t have the time to find ‘em and put it together.
I’ve waited for this review for so long
Thankyou for educating the masses on how cool this set is. You would do RR Slugger proud with your thoroughness.
Thing to note about the legs is that the feet tips (claws?) are actually made of heads from the RoboRiders theme from the same year, there are also a handful of other pieces that were exclusive to RoboRiders or Slizer/Throwbots such as those shoulder pieces (the flat bits with one tapered and and the other having a sort of fan aesthetic). Good example of reusing pieces that appeared extremely specialized at the time.
The play function reminds me of an old toy called "Bakugan" little monsters that could roll up and pop out once they hit metal.
Technic Star Wars droids should make a comeback. Heck, Technic Star Wars vehicles would be awesome too!
Time to go bowling
Great review!! Thank you for sharing Ryan!
I really wanted this as a kid, never got it.
I used to think about it years later at random moments.
Very happy to see it's a good set.
Never too late! Go for it! 🎉❤
This is soo nostalgic for me. That was my first big Lego technic set. I was play with it my whole childhood, than just give up my legos for some kids, and never seen after. Looking forward for this new droideka to refresh my nostalgia.
The demo of the 'roll in attack position'. Love it, I want to see that over, and over! What a great model.
Bought the set brand new in box a few years back for $90😀 one of my best finds and such a great set
Finally a vid about this set! Thank You and spot on.. one of the best sets ever! A Gem
Gosh darn it, I thought by the thumbnail that this was a new set and that they were going to make sets more like old days. Now I see that this is just an old set I didn't know about. :(
One of my fav sets. Love how it pops open. Had to get 3rd party rubber band replacements over the years.
OMG I had this and the 8001 technic battle droid - I was like 10yrs old at the time it was challenging to build and keep in one piece but the play functionality was top tier in both sets! Major throwback!
The Lego Technic Droideka has simultaneously the best, most finnicky, and most dangerous play feature all in one set. When you get it to work, it's perfect and genuinely everything you'd want out of it. The rest of the time it only half works or doesn't pop out at all- which is partially dependent on what material it's being rolled on. Lastly, I say it's "dangerous" because it is incredibly easy to straight up break technic liftarms in this set if you apply too much pressure or do something wrong while setting up the play feature, which is why I think the amendments were added during the set's lifetime. The rubber bands do also deteriorate over time, which is really the only flaw this set has other than it's over complicated nature. It's definitely a set you should get new, unless you want to go for off brand rubber bands.
I definitely agree as i said in my previous comment on the new droideka review you did. This is the most well done lego set ever. I had it in 2002, btw, and it still works.
I had this set when I was a kid, it was sooo fun to play with it. Loved it! Thank you for bringing back some good memories :)
I had this set when I was a kid, and it didn't always pop out properly, but when it did, it was the coolest thing ever
Several of the elements in the old shade of brown (also called "Mata brown" or "Earth orange") are exclusive to this set, with the Technic 90-degree "cross block" and 180-degree angle element in that color also appearing in the Jango Fett figure (8011) from 2002. Some other elements in that color such as the offset axle connector and 5M beam also came in an Orient Expedition set (7416) and as part of a Titan set (8595) in the Bionicle theme from mid-2003, before being phased out completely. Many of the old dark gray elements also debuted in this set, but only were in use until '03 as well.
Great review
What a great review! The viewer can really feel your love and excitement for Lego Star Wars here. 🎉❤😊
I remember mum bought this for me with a bunch of super market frequent shopper points. I was soo happy this set as a kid.
I bought this model when it came out and it really felt like you had a real droideka in your hands. That function is still to be topped.
2000's Lego was full of experimentation, some of that was really cool. Early 2000's Lego Technic was crazy!
Also, from what I remember from 90's and 2000's Lego Technic sets, the alternative builds always had instructions, because Technic is too complicated to be buildable from a single picture. Nowadays the alternative build instructions for Technic are often online only.
You are a legend for building the alternative build. Damn I wish I bought this set as a kid, I knew back in like 2001 that it was good but seeing it in a review- it's better than I thought. I thought it was a 9/10 set but it's easily 10/10
love your vids long time fan love this set
The first SW Lego set I ever bought. Got the spring of 2001.
You need to check out the b1 battledroid as well. Literally pulls its gun out of it backpack
I so so sooo wanted this back in the day..
I have this one, the pit droid and the battle droid set up in my room. Great sets!
So many vids of old sets will show the image of the alt build but will never actually build it, had to give you a like just for that
I've loved this set ever since I saw a UA-cam video of it in action as a kid. I finally tracked down a full copy of it at the yardsale at BrickFair VA 2022. That was $100ish bucks well-spent.
I had this one and the Battle Droid, probably the early version as the function didn’t really work. It’s in pieces in the box so the rubber bands could still be ok. Time to dig it out. Thanks for the video!
Had this set and yea, it was amazing as a kid playing with this. One of the coolest sets from Lego Star Wars.
I had this set as a kid! I loved it! My parents still have all of my brother and mines lego, we have an insane amount of 2000-2010 legos
One of my favorite Lego Star Wars sets. Literally so cool
Oh, goodness, it's been such a long time, but I remember building this and the B1 battle Droid back in the day. I'd actually forgotten I owned these since I was 7 when the Phantom Menace released, and these didn't stay intact for very long before ending up part of other builds (I was seven). It's one of the few Lego sets I would absolutely still own if i had the opportunity.
I saw this at a LEGO resale store a few weeks ago, and got to use the roll and pop feature. I can’t imagine how much fun people had with it back in the day
Lego resale store? Sounds interesting
Would love if you went back through all these old sets and do the official alternate builds. Maybe rank them as well as to which you'd recommend building even.
I recently got two used, complete copies of this (all told only something like $180!) and loved it as much as I hoped I would. For sure the best of the Technic Star Wars line. Was afraid I'd have to be the first to review on UA-cam, but thanks for sparing me!
Can confirm that the rubber bands dry out terribly and the function does not work great. For the most part the back does not get pulled up very far so the front legs don't snap down. Crazy that the "butt" requires 4, but it's for sure necessary!
I got that back in 2000 along with the battle droid and pit droid. All three are so cool! Had to get the super battle droid, c3p0, r2d2, darth vader, and storm trooper when those came out as well! Those technic sets were all so cool!
I wish LEGO would make more cool play features like this in sets nowadays
Still one of my favorite old StarWars sets, just that play feature is incredible
damn that was amazing to watch!! I've somehow never seen a Droideka deployment video in the over 20 years since this bad boy released! Honestly, the new Droideka is swell and all, but you may have convinced me to pick up this classic! Nothing can quite compare to the early 2000s Lego SW sets with value, functionality, and building fun. Thanks Ryan.
I got the lego jet wasp 8444 when I was a kid. It that had those unusual cables. The handles were connected to the blades and 'steer' the blades' position.
You can make the rubber bands last longer if you rotate them regularly. Just move them around to change the stress points.
AAT looking so fire 🔥🔥🔥
@MandRproductions I had this as a kid! Man what a throwback. Pro-tip: it rolls/opens best on carpet from what I remember.
Everything rolls better on carpet. It’s a law of the childhood.
I bought this off eBay in 2003. I expected it to be open, but it was sealed. Those rubber bands (namely the black ones) will dry out and become dust fairly quickly. I don't have mine assembled for this reason.
This set was way ahead of its time
The only difference in the second amendment droideka.... IS THAT IT BEARS A M60 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅
You need to do a review on the 8001 battle droid technic set
I recently found this for only 60 euro still in the box! Now it is one of my favorites in my collection!
Thought that this alternate build AAT looks like an unfinished hull and came up with a cool moc - an AAT assembly line where this unfinished tanks stands next too half baked and ready ones
I think the play feature of the 8002 droideka is better than the play feature of the V-19 Torrent
Something nostalgic is with that blue-gray they should bring it back
If the rubber bands get stretched out over time you can put them in very hot water the high heat will make them shrink back down to their original shape
technic star wars would be something id want to have nowadays. i think the whole idea of making something related to star wars out of lego technic with play features would be so cool. imagine they would bring back mindstorm and making something like a controllable powered technic b1 battle droid.... id love to build and play with it.
Try to roll it on a surface with more friction, like a carpet. The action will be way cooler; when the front legs hit the floor, they stop the roll and it opens up on the spot.
This was probably the coolest lego set I have owned as kid.
Ask Mandr: question what is your opinion on the 2012 Y wing Bomber and why?
Thank you Ryan for responsibly practicing the second amendment while handling the Lego set 8002-1 Destroyer Droid 2000 Technic
This and that motorized AT AT got to be the best play features
Never did grab this one although I still have the og Vader, Battle Droid and Pit Droid. The Pit Droid play feature is cool also as you can shrink it down and pop it back up by booping it's nose, very cool.
Is there a way to view the amendments? I bought mine already built and used, now I wanna know which version it was
if im not mistaken that cable piece was used in a different color and maybe length on the technic storm trooper.
I have this set from new and it still looks great, along with the other Technics sets from the 2000s
I just rebuilt mine from the basement tub. Awesome set, although my rubber band replacements have made for tricky unrolling. Also definitely recommend rolling on carpet as opposed to smooth surfaces!
This and the hailfire droid are outstanding and probably the coolest I own.
And the amendments explain why my rolling to open function has never worked😂
Probably a good idea to put this set behind glass because the old black rubber bands collect dust easy and become brittle over time. Very snapable.
Ngl, Ryan might've slept on the motorized AT-AT, nothing is beating that in my book
The comparisons going to be close... Mandr cooked with this review!
i have that one!!! the mechanical open system is kind of janky but it works most of the time.
That box is classic tho. Loved seeing it in my old Lego minifig lexicon thingi book
That thing is sick
