The first one also folded up pretty much perfectly into a ball. I made one out of spare parts I had as a kid and it was my favorite thing ever since I could actually roll it like a Lego Bakugan
I was expecting your build to be the classic moc-maker "three times as many parts, half of which are in out of production colors", but your design is surprisingly modern and genuinely looks like something we could get from a set today!
Biggest issue is the classic revolvers which Lego seems to be straying away from with what I’ve seen but they did bring them back for the Indiana Jones line so it’s definitely a lot more possible. Not like they couldn’t replace that part anyways.
Wow, I really like your droideka design! The use of the claw piece is genius! I haven't used droidekas in my videos because I've just never found a design I liked, this one may be a winner!
There's another variant you missed. It has a singular blaster pole sticking out of the center, and it's the biggest and tallest droideka. Pretty sure it's the Sniper, don't remember which set it's from.
I had that one. You’re right it is based off a sniper droideka from the clone wars which was only in an episode or two. The set is the 501st at-rt but I don’t know if it came in any other sets. I really like the curvature of the brown “spine” but the scale is waaay to big.
Yep, the Sniper droideka, from the 501st At-Rt. Strangely from a set themed around the Umbara arc, where outside of the supply ship, no battle droids are present.

Amazing build! Just wanted to mention that because you used the Aeroblade piece for the base, you can put two brown 1×1 round tiles with bar and pin holders (part 20482/31561) in the two bar holes near the rear leg to replicate the shield generators
@@groovybones I just added another round tile between the hips and body to give it enough space to fit the 20482s. I know you were going for the accurate height as a primary goal and so this clearly bumps it over, but figured it was worth mentioning.

Not only does it have the profile of the droidika matched almost perfectly, but it also plays very well, being the only one to properly roll up and having a ton of articulation compared to the later offerings. They really did peak with that first one and god damn was it good. Wish you could buy them individually
I mean, it's nostalgic, and it does roll up well. But its head/neck is missing so much of the essential brown/copper carapace. Also loses points in my book for not easily standing without support.

I feel like destroyers need some kind of specialized centre mold so I can actually roll one up in a ball AND pose it standing up, I think there are enough parts from there to build one out
The first one is a classic and the best one that LEGO has made. The best part about it is that it can transform into a very rollable form. I didn't really know that they were that small in the movies. They are always shown to be quite the threat so I thought they would be at least as tall as a minifig. Your design is great with some special pieces. Great video!
Wow. I had Clone Troopers vs Destroyer Droids and always thought the droidekas didn't look quite right. I spent SO much time trying to come up with a better one with what parts I had as a kid. I even used the wolverine claws at one point! Your design is definitely better than anything I ever came up with.
This is almost certainly my nostalgia talking, but I really like how barebones the design of the OG LEGO droideka is. The later ones I think are trying and failing to be more faithful to the actual design with more curved parts for the lower orb and head/back plating, whereas the first of them all lets your imagination fill in way more and overall looks in place with the rest of LEGO, especially sets of the time period. I especially dislike how several of them went for leg parts that can't even move! Sure, they stand up alright, but LEGO is about play, not just making display pieces! I should be able to wiggle my droids' legs around like they're walking, or at least position them at different angles. Alas, those old droid arm pieces were prone to breaking, and when my droideka's grey ones started to break and I couldn't keep it together anymore, the surviving arm parts became prosthetics for my Life on Mars aliens who tragically lost their arms to repeated use. Many of them remain amputees to this day... What I'm really not sure of is why they won't just make some new molds for specialized parts to build these things. Yeah, they might be limited in utility, but LEGO also kept making sets with droidekas in them. Surely, at some point, that justifies a specialized part or two, right? Or, maybe not. Your design blows all the rest out of the water with no need for custom parts, and I just may have to get some parts and make a few myself.
Wow, this is amazing! Yours is definitely the best looking of the droidekas. As somebody who prefers display pieces play features don't matter so much, but it'd still be awesome to see one that can actually roll!

I just happened to see this video pop up and thought it was an interesting idea for a video and then BOOM: Lego Masters Sam?? I didn't know you had a channel! looking forward to your future content and I wish you the best on your youtube journey!
Also that droideka build is spot-on!
this is easily the best drodika design. Only thing i like about bigger ones is ability to roll
