- My old chevy 4x4 service truck needs more ground clearance to help pull old classic and antique cars and trucks from their grave. I turned to Rough Country who sent over an awesome 6" IFS suspension lift for this 1989 Chevrolet K2500 truck. I'll show you how to install these lifts, and eventually, we'll give it a good test. Be sure to subscribe to the whole series!

Best channel on the UA-cam by far!
Thank you michael!!
agreed
Can confirm.
Agreed
without a doubt
Derek, i got to say my friend. You realy filled the void that once was roadkill.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you!!
@@ViceGripGarage just don't become a corporate sellout like they did though!
Yes, PLEASE don't follow their path!! Love your HIGHLY educational and informative instructional videos... did someone say something about cold snacks??
Yes, I have a rampant case of the A. D. Ds.. Lol
species5022 thank you. You’ve helped me realize what my attraction to this channel was! I was so upset when roadkill became what it is now. Love this channel as well.
I'm a die hard ford guy, but this has to be my favorite youtube channel, that's how you know its good
A guy is a Ford fan but I call it the red white and blue show cause it's like the mechanic version of the red green show !!
I'm the exact same. Love my Fords but Derek is entertaining enough to watch him work on any junk.
Ya we need him to tackle 78 pickup with a 300 six and tremic 5 speed behind. He could come to my place and help me with mine. Cause boy oh boy whoever put my 78 together was really creative and cheap. So I'm gutten her out and starting over
@@parentsbasement7734 my truck is an '81 f150 with the 300 and a the 3 speed auto, engine is mint but the digicles aren't so mint
Thanks friends
Calling a plasma cutter " lightning scissors" is my new favorite thing
😂👍
Makes me think of welding as "lightning glue."
Oxy acetylene torches are known in our shop as the 'fire saw'
@@Intimidator82 I've heard them called "fire wrench" and my personal favorite "gas hatchet".
The ol 'gas axe' AKA oxyacetylene torch😂
Did the right thing and watched this immediately
Well ya know a guy would do well to go ahead and watch this here videa.
" we salt everything including the air " as a guy living in maine, I can relate. Thanks for the great videos
Here in Vermont the state went over its budget for salt last year
Justin Stearns happens here in my small town, Ontario too. More salt in a square inch of road than a large McDonald’s fry 😑
Illinois is bad too. Gonna maybe snow in a few days? Better salt the roads heavy.
They should have signs like they do on highways - This section of road salted compliments of your local new car dealer consortium.
can confirm. We do like a well seasoned road here in Maine
Respect a guy that can make preserving history both interesting and fun! Got to respect a man that did not let his schooling interfere with his education!
Best part is always being able to turn wrenches with the boy.
absolutely!
Thank you for this video I watch it a dozen times and burned through at least that many cold snacks finally got my son's 6" rough country lift installed in his 1998 silverado he came home in when he was born he is seventeen now and couldn't believe how good it looked.lm a truck driver out of spokane WA and work 60 hrs week and watch every video you put out it really gives me something to look forward to thanks so much couldn't have done it with out your help.
I wish i could like this like 1157 more times for a guy. Dude, your awesome, and the tool nicknames have me rolling! "Tonya Harding", "Gas axe"" death wheel" freakin halarious. I can relate to EVERY ASPECT. Your a fine American, Dad, and shade tree mechanic! I'm going to put this on repeat to help with your views counter if i can!
Tonya Harding definitely had me laughing for a few minutes 😂
Love seeing the kid working with his hands. I’m 16 and I work on my ‘99 chevy dually and absolutely love it. It’s so fundamental to a little man to have skills with his hands and to not be afraid to work on things.
This channel is refreshing and more down to earth. I love the way you mention the “Right way” of doing things and then go ahead and do things the real life way. The colorful commentary makes this one of my top channels to watch if not my number 1. I don’t generally blopity bloop much so that says a lot. 👍🤣🤣
Rejuvenation Spray, Lightning Scissors, Gas Axe, Large Tonya Harding, and death wheel all new adds to the garage terminology---big thanks *Vice Grip Garage*
👍👍👍🙏
I love how your son has interest in what you do and you are teaching him at a young age he can do things for himself if he just knows how we need more of this!
“Your large Tonya Harrding” 😂
fucking kilt
I laughed out loud at that. I shouldn't have, but I did.
wit09 whyyyy!!! Poor Nancy lol
Ole Tonya sure has got a bad rap over the years..
She worked hard for her rep ...
I love that you have your little humans help. Tradition is important and passing down knowledge is priceless.
I had no idea how much is involved in installing a lift kit! Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder! Yours will be a million subscriber channel.
You called it.
I really admire what you are teaching your son. He's a tough little man handeling those tires and rims. A ++++
What a strong young man..I know of grown men struggle with those wheels...👍💪👏
he did pretty dang good for 235/85s! Heavy buggers
Congrats to him for having awesome teachings👍
I like how you not only educate us but also get a few followers educating your son at the same time! What an awesome dad! Stick with your pops Bradley! Just remember to use safety glasses when cutting with a torch and such!
Thanks Neil appreciate it!
Looks like a fella got himself some new fancy cordless tools. Milwaukee is a heck of an upgrade from Hitachi
Still made in Asia aren't they? Is anything really made in Milwaukee?
im so happy to see your son helping. the memories that it builds are priceless. my dad let me help alot when i was his age. now that hes passed i take those memories with me everytime i pick up a wrench. its great to see!
I've installed these lifts before, so danged easy a fella can make them look factree
The Absolute Best Rough Country Suspension Lift Installation video for the GM OBS culture!
Rough Country should be paying you handsomely for it!
Thank You for making this video!
Rough Country could/should Have made an installation video just like this outstanding Installation Video!
Love the wire mesh headlight protectors on that unit. Keeps them Minnesota skeeters at bay. Cant wait for part two👍
My dad and I are planning a resto for my grandfather's '88 C1500 pickup, and it's crazy how well-matched your channel's content lines up with what we are aiming to do with it. Huge fan of the channel, I typed stuff in the bleep bloops, so I expect it's gonna help a guy!
I see you had to bring in someone that knows what they're doing! Glade to see those kind of moments. I personally never got to experience doing things like that with my old man much. You know aswell as I do he wont forget of regret time working with dad!
Yep. I remember being in the shop with my dad as a kid, with my own REAL, kid-sized tools.
You better believe my step-daughter got out there to work on the family fleet and I built her a rolling workbench with tiny vise and she had her own toolbox with kid-sized real tools.
It’s nice that you get your so involved here and there. Yeah a guy may not wanna hurt his joints but spending time with your kid/kids is priceless
I love how Bradley was helping you I let my son help me all the time
Just love seeing dad teach the son his skills and the quality time raising a child.
Thanks for namin that part after me. Ironically, my nickname in high school was “3/4 ton spindle”.
😂😂 this is great
YOUR DEREKISMS KILL, THE TONYA HARRDING AND THE NEW WORDS YOU MAKE UP EACH POSTS. BUT YOUR FINAL WORK, GOOD JOB GUY, KEEP THEM COMING FELLA
thanks Ray appreciate it
Thanks for the upload Derek! I always look forward to your videos.
appreciate it dean
Derek you make me feel old dude. When I qualified here in the UK as a mechanic, you were just being born. Have to say, I can see the Professionalism underneath the humour. Keep it up man, you do some amazing work.
Awesome video Derek, your my favorite mechanic channel on you tube, that's for sure!! Can't wait till a guy finishes that lift, it'll be awesome!!!
I'm only ten minutes in and LOVING this ! "I'm going to name you Brad" ... very informative ... and very funny. My favourite car channel
Awesome work as always!!! Love your show! Love your personality! Its awesome to see you include your little guy in the builds. Nothing better than helping out dad in the garage! Keep the awesome content coming bud!
Thank you sir!!
One of the most instructional hands on videos I've seen Derek is,the most talented guy I've aeen..
Droppin' videos in the middle of the day, I'm going to blame you for being late to work today.
Bradley is pretty much a tire installation expert at this point. Love to see it!
a guy can only wait long enough for all the parts to the video lol u the bomb dude love the videos
Mike from edmonton alberta canada
That is so awesome. I had a 1994 Silverado extended cab and I put the same exact six inch lift that you have and are putting on your truck. You will have to modify your Y-pipe if you have the original exhaust on it because the front driveshaft will hit it once you’re done with the lift kit. I started out with the 5.7 and then once I went with the bigger tires I ended up finding a 1994 big block 454 that came out of a 1 ton Dooley that had Throttlebody injection and everything just about plug straight in to the computer and all the wires for the engine and I just shaved a little bit for the fan shroud and I converted it over for the power brakes instead of the vacuum I made it work with the power steering because that’s what was on the Dooley and all the stuff was all ready there. I loved it you sir have an awesome truck. I got rid of my truck about six or seven years ago because I messed up my back when I was younger I fell off the rafters and landed on the concrete floor so then I started working on cars for 20 years and now I’m at the point where I can hardly walk and I’m your age And it sucks whenever I try to do something my back starts hurting so bad I can’t even stand up long enough to make a sandwich and if I do my whole lower back and lags starts stabbing so bad I can’t even see straight, and now all I can do is just sit.But what I like is watching your videos they’re awesome it’s all the same stuff that I like to do I can’t wait to see your truck done that truck is going to be sweet.👍👍👍 I hope that you get it Done before it snows and get some sweet videos from that. 👍👍👍👍
Got to love when everything's Rust Welded together.
Rust is the best welder
A guy coulda used a relative who knew some knowledge while growing up .. just like this fellar ... but who needed that when you got the UA-cam and a proper subscription to the best DIY mechanic on the UA-cam!! A1 as always!
Thanks buddy!
I swear i don't see how you don't have a million subscribers....love the channel man keep em comn
Your videos are helping me get through this horrid time, trying to recover from illness has been hard last three months.
I love your work and just wanted to thank you 🙏🏼
Laughed out loud at "shut er down!" 😂
When she runs away shut er riteee dowwnnnn
Derek, I love how much you include your boys. I wish mine would wrench with me!
I’ve got everyone saying cold snacks here in my neck of the woods lol
Same here. Even have my customers saying sparkalators, lightnin'whirler, firemaker etc.
need direction ill bring the steaks....
@Eric D hit em with the ol go left go right selector one time and see their looks.
Same here, lol everybody looks at me funny but they laugh! I've got 4-5 friends saying the same shit! Hopefully they'll tell more people & we can get this Channel pumped on up there for a guy?
As a semi professional tinker feller myself, I love that your including the young’ns. Best way to learn. Great vids, keep it up. Eleventeen stars!
Thanks troy
A guy decided to rewatch all a fella's vidjeos. 8/15/24.
9/30/24, this fellers doing the same.
@@jessesager9460 It's been a blast - enjoy!
A feller has followed him for about 2 yrs now, bought a Chevy now im lifting it, so happy he made a video like this, diddent even know!
I like the way you interact with Bradley. He will remember the times in the shop with his Dad forever. Just like I do with my Dad. He taught me everything I needed to know to make a living with my hands, from driving a nail and reading a tape measure when I was six to planning a project.......I know, I lost you when I started to talk about planning! :>)
Haha. Thanks for the kind words appreciate it!
I love that you literally Tonya Hardinged your knee with the tow bar using your medium Tonya Harding. I was wondering how long you would up with that thing.
A guy believes this is a really good kit! They always have good quality and built really well! I have installed a couple my self
The best time is to spend with young relatives.
When my kids were little, I drove trucks and was away almost all the time.
I never get that time back.
Sorry bud.. but you provided!!

Derick you are a pleasure to watch working. Thanks ! Al from Canada.
Great video, had me laughing a lot! I have a Chevy dually like that one, I’ve done a ton of work on the front end, no lift, just replaced every suspension and steering parts, brought back painful memories!
Haha can be a bugger!
Worked on one of these lift kits on a early 80's Ford years ago. Took 2 of us a lot longer to get to where you are now than a day and we only had liquid snacks going starting late afternoon. Big job. Minnesota truck and the rust had a good grip on a lot of it.
2:01 Ohhhhhh my backalator. Always nice to see your boys working with you.
Nice to see you training up the young'n! As you know...making memories that will last a lifetime! Good on ya!
Thanks Robert
"gotta put it on so tight it ruins your life trying to take it off" 😂 yep been there bro LMFAO
I used to have a '91 Chevy Shortbox standard cab OBS C-1500. I loved that old truck. Finally had to sell it after 197,000 miles and needing its third transmission. I bought it new, and owned it almost 25 years.
hard to let something like that go
Everything he goes through really does happen👍💪✌
I put an "RCD" 6" Lift in my 97 Silverado and I only had to cut the front diff mount off then weld a 4" plate back on for strength. That kit was my first, awe 😍. Seemed easy except for the torsion bars. I applied a little heat and then went a swinging my splitting maul like a golf club at the driving range and they had no choice but to exit the control arm. This kit allowed the torsion bars to remain at the stock location and height for an improved ride and handling. It also gave the truck a tighter turning radius, which I really like.
When Derek is ready for Bradley to turn the wrench:
"Alright, get some!"
😂
Swapping out my ‘99 3/4ton Suburban front LCA bushings about 8 yrs ago, the passenger side LCA rear (maybe front) bolt was installed the wrong direction. Wouldn’t slide out cuz it was hitting the flange on the TC where the CV joint mates up. Had to drop the TC just to reuse a single bolt! I renamed a few GM engineer that day!
Great channel!
"I'm gonna name you Fred" Fella just spit Pepsi all over the keyboard!!!
Ahh memories. Put the exact kit in. Best advice i have, if it doesn't have true duel exhaust, make sure to revamp the Y pipe before you put the Diff back in otherwise front drive shaft wont clear. Oh and one more thing, never and I mean NEVER do this late at night outside during severe weather. I almost had to drink my cold snack in another county! JIMMINY!!
I’m guessing Minnesota has a hardware store called the Snip and Snag!
Yep. Located at Any Majot snowbank
@paul beenis you aren't wrong. That's why i call it "The Land of 10,000 Snowpiles".
Yep... it's right next door to the Try-n-save
SnipedGaming land of 10,000 slush chunks stuck to my truck
Rough Country makes awesome kits. Love their stuff, nice to see them working with you
11:31 love me the smoke wrench!
HOT WRENCH.
Good stuff VGG,iam a grandfather so i love watching you work with your son,and that little look he does (sometimes)like(come on dad i got this) love it,great video.
Thanks James, I get a kick out of it as well
Your jack works so well- my dad has an old one that was like "let 'er down!" and you twist on 'er, a little harder, nothing, then all at once she'd slam from full up to full down. test on the shocks every time you let 'er down
Those r the only floor jacks i know
I think we had the same brand of jack at home, lol.
Jeremy dgaf. My dads was probably a craftsman from the 70’s
Definitely don’t miss working on my old Minnesota car! Left that sucker in Germany!
Another great video and as always a good laugh 👍👍
Thanks shane
My God... what a job... I do love your videos Derrick. Thank you. I never knew a lift was so much work.
Quit a bit to it!
"I'm gonna name you Fred" lol
I do a ton of Rough Country stuff. Up here in Canadia 110% of the time the keys are mother nature welded to the bars. Keep up the great work!
off topic... perfect name for the duster .....diamond's and dust...oh yes... it fit's...lol and it's a verse in ac/dc's sin city
Nice job! Living in Central Texas I watch your videos and consider myself lucky when I see all the rust and stuck parts you deal with. I thought I always had it better than you, until today when I saw you removing the hub on the k2500. A few years back I had to replace a CV axle on my1993 GMC K2500. No amount of heatin’ or beatin’ would get it loose. I had to build a “pusher”. (It looked like a brake rotor/ hat.) I cut a piece if 1/2” thick plate in a circle (8”?) Then I cut a hole (3”?) in the center of the plate, and eight holes in the 6.5” bolt pattern so it would bolt to the hub. Then I welded a 6” long piece of pipe (4”?) over the hole in the center of the plate. I cut another piece of 1/2” thick plate 4” in diameter with a 3/4” hole in the center. I welded a 3/4” nut over the hole. Then i welded this over the end of the pipe. Then I welded a 3/4” nut to a piece of 3/4” all thread and screwed it into the nut that was welded to the too of the hat. It took heating the hub and using a cheater pipe to push the axle stub out. This was a texas truck but had spent a lot if its life in the coast. It had seen a lot of mud that hadn’t been washed out. Ever. The “pusher” hangs on the wall of my barn, waiting to do its job again, having inly been used once. “Conversation piece”, if you will.
"Lightning scissors" Haha!
Reminds me of the "molten metal hot glue gun"
Am I first. Just started watching. Cool.... Ok just finished watching. Best nugget of advice in here is to put your kneecaps under whatever you're working on. That keeps your parts from accidentally hitting the ground and getting damaged. And that's the right thing to do.
I love the very scientific words you use when describe part's can't stop laughing.🇬🇧👍👍👍
thanks for watching ronald
@@ViceGripGarage My pleasure, you are very entertaining keep them coming.👍👍🇬🇧

Thanks Brandon appreciate it!!
You’re getting funnier every episode 😂
Agreed..
A guy woke up early this morning and wouldn't you know it, that Vice Grip Garage snipped a new video up onto the youtube there. Went ahead and did the right thing and grabbed myself a cold snack before watching.
I did a 6” lift installation on my wife. Oh boy that dog will hunt
Fire ax ,that made me spit my beer out. Never take a drink when Derek is describing something.
"take your larger Tonya Harding" haha!
I just did the 4 inch kit on my 89 k1500. Even in Utah I had a hell of a time removing the torsion bars. I managed to get it out of the control arm on the driver side and out of the key on the passenger side. So I had a torsion bar hanging from a control arm and the other hanging from the cross member. Made it a little harder but was faster and easier than trying to drive them out.
You gonna be able to drive it out of the garage after it’s all done and said? It ain’t gonna be too tall? Haha. Always entertaining and great editing.
Good to see Bradley getting involved more on the builds. Give them a car addiction and they wont have $$$ for a drug addiction they say. I'm going to start having my nephew work on stuff with me. Hes really into cars.
Interesting.... as a technician we always called them "the destructions"
fact
Thats way cool you have Vice grip Jr. helping you boss. Your a good dad...🙃
a little tip for those watching/reading, when dealing with that style sway bar link, i've always schmutzed a little anti-sieze on the bolt shaft before sliding the collar onto it, if you have to take it apart down the road for anything, it'll come apart nice and easy! same goes for shock bolts/shackle bolts etc... basically anything where a bolt runs through a sleeve of some kind!
That was the first time I ever posted anything about anybody dude keep doing you you kick ass
I been wanting to do this to my 99 Yukon Denali ever since i changed my torsion keys to raise it. Yeah that wasn't the way to get a lift. But living in Massachusetts those torsion bars was frozen tight . Making those keys ridiculously hard to get in. I quickly realized the proper lift kit is going to be next to impossible . I watched a couple from southern states make it look so easy. watching you get passed the Wisconsin rust maybe I stand a chance with my mass rust.
Well, if I learned one thing from this video is this operation is beyond my abilities. Not saying I couldn’t do it if properly motivated, but I’m rarely motivated that much. However, enjoy watching the process and if ever considering lifting a truck more appreciative of the effort necessary.
