This is the first one of your videos that I've watched. I am very impressed by what you are doing. Choosing that Albin to restore proves to me that you're exceptional. One thing that i want to say is that many suppliers are happy to set people up with discounts based not on some phony company name or just because someone is a "Commercial Fisherman". Rather, pricing is based on how much you actually buy. One rule that keeps me in good stead with my suppliers is always think about what you're ordering and NEVER waste their Time and Money Returning Stuff. If you want to combine your resources by including a friend when buying that's great, and normally the fact that you're taxable will not affect your prices at all. But make sure that your friends know from the start that this isn't fricken kmart and you Keep what you order. Because nothing will get you blackballed faster than testing the patience of a supplier who is willing to give you a break by opening an account. Additionally, don't ask for terms like 30days. Pay Cash. Thank You.
Thanks Marty. Good information 👌it may seem a little intimidating to the novice but in the long run can really make a difference on the bottom line. Thanks again 👍
@@motorcityboatwerks My first impression of your setup is: Take your time, do it right. I often find myself not happy with a first attempt which means that I have built a pattern (or a pattern of a pattern) of the final version. Why be so obsessive about it? Well, for one thing, an amalgamation of a few "good enoughs" will give the whole project a home made look. But what is obvious to me is that you get: Doing it the best way possible can absolutely mean the difference between life-or-death to the customer that is counting on us. In the long run that can also be the least expensive route. Maybe everyone isn't suited to this kind of project. The best indicator I know of is whether they turn a sanding session into a workout instead of a piece of paper skating across a surface. If someone actually believes that hand sanding with foam block or board is in fact superior to any machine sanded finish then they absolutely get it. Thanks
Thank you Amy. 👍😁 please spread the word especially among female boaters, boat builders, and boat restorers. I try to provide a level of info that is a cut above the usual. Thanks again for your support and please consider joining the Werkers
Momentum is a big one. It took me a year to build my sharpie while working 12 hour days. Every day I would work on it even if it was just 10 minutes. Oh, don’t forget about lists. Got to stay organized. Cheers.
Thanks for the video, I would like to add to number 10 if I may. I'm a contractor who works on larger projects from time to time. I work alone so a bigger projects can seem daunting. I dont look too far forward, I just start checking boxes, crossing things off the list. This will keep you somewhat sane. Good luck to all that partake
I've got my sailboat under a couple of huge oak trees in my back yard. They are a mess dropping leaves, acorns, twigs, and sap. It makes working on the boat really hard. Any ideas to make my project easier ? Where can I purchase discount materials and used equipment ?
I feel your pain. ☹️ Denny, What you need is a DIY Stimson Bowshed. Check out the UA-cam Channel from my good friend Rick at “Building She-Kon”. He has a video for a DIY boat shed that is best in class. Get your materials wholesale, your heavy equipment from Craigslist/Market Place. And check out my video “Secret Boat Part Treasure House” for used gear. Stay motivated 😁👍
Unrelated to the topic of this video, is that the lighting or did you put a satin finish on the topsides (the red)? It looks great, but that's pretty unusual, right? Or is it?
I would like to better understand the formula. Is it a joke? I was interested in plugging in my numbers and seeing how it came out - even if it was a joke. But what is the function of cash minus x 8per day x $80per???
You ask some great questions! And you are the first to ask about The Boat Restoration Equation ! 😁 It is real but still a work in progress, and it is funny to look at, cause no one dare talk about it. 😉 I will be discussing The Equation in the future when I lay out the past budgets for my various projects. 👍
ABYC publishes guidelines. They are not rules and are definitely not requirements except that many insurers will want the boat to comply with the ABYC guidelines before they will insure the boat. The only binding rules are those that apply to commercial boats and are in the US code and some federal rules about fuel systems and waste systems that apply to all boats (hose types, gasoline tank standards, holding tanks, etc.). The rules are much stricter for USCG inspected commercial passenger vessels than say a fishing boat. That is not to say that ABYC guidelines are not a good thing to follow. When looking at the ABYC guidelines remember ABYC is an industry group that "may" tend to build products made by the members of ABYC into their guidelines.
I was horrified when I saw plastic thru-hulls for sale on Amazon. ABYC standards will ensure that your boat is fully resellable but more importantly, can save your life.
The restoration of Stainless Steel can have some dangerous events. On a sailboat parts from the rigg should not be older than 20 years and in doubt they must be replaced for the danger of hidden corrosion. Not making that point in this video creates dangers to viewers and therefore to you (as you may face a lawyers case without the missing disclaimer) On top of this your rules collide. At the beginning you said don't put expensive stuff like decking material on a cheap boat. Here the argument is "don't invest in things nobody will pay for when selling it " At the end the main thing was "do it the way you want to " A high gloss hull can be as expensive as the deck material, even if you do it yourself. Plus some very extensive work and frustration included for untrained people. Here you say "it's not important what people and the next buyer think".
Andre, sadly you have misunderstood and moreover you are mistaken. Please watch the video again and the entire Albin 27 playlist to understand the context of the amateur boat restoration rules. You have made assumptions that do not apply in the context given. Plenty of sailboats sail with stainless or metal fittings that are more than 20 years old. Evaluating and checking sailboat rigging is an important topic but it’s not discussed here or even applicable in this context. Besides not all rigging is stainless. Of course the rules are not at odds, but they can sometimes be competing. Lastly perhaps 🤔 you didn’t understand or read the legal disclaimer at the beginning of every episode. Thanks for you comment 👌
@@motorcityboatwerks No, I didn't read the disclaimer. But still the general statement of reusing Stainless Steel is dangerous. There are reasons why any insurance is asking for certificates of inspection. As can be seen by this case, any video should stand for it's own. You can't presuppose everyone has followed your channel. As I'm a German naval architect and carpenter myself with more than 40 years since my dad began working with me your videos won't help me very much. Not all rigging is stainless as much as not all boats are fibreglass.... As you assumed in the beginning of the video.

The hull is painted red but has been sanded in spots. What makes the finish look slightly different is that it’s not high gloss
Biggest rule foer me is to plan ahead. What is your finished boat or small project going to look. Estimated time times 3 every time
