I knew you guys used the Fluttershy squee in one of your earlier videos (Firewall). This video proves it (2:08).
*EDIT:* Well seems they used it here too at 3:40
Computers have been around a lot longer than PCs.
You have to go back at least the 1950's to get the first operating systems.
The first OS's with which I worked were those designed for the IBM 360 system in the late 1960's. And even then they supported multi-tasking and had true memory management that protected one user's data from other processes.
Hi!! My name is Daniela Gutiérrez and I’m from a school in Mexico!! Thank you so much for uploading this video! I think that it has very complete information, it’s quite interesting knowing the complex process that it takes to a computer to do such a simple seeming task!!
I do have to say it has been weird and awesome to hear you guys talk about stuff I learned in college this semester. Keep doing what your doing Linus, loving it all!
My college class requires me to watch this video!!!
I love these random rewards. ❤️
0:06 What about a Penguin? WHAT ABOUT LINUX, LINUS? YOUR NAME IS PRACTICALLY LINUX! XD
EDIT: I notice it like a second later AND in the description
dc2008242 It's practically Linux because the guy who first designed a Linux operating system was called Linus. The OS is named after him not the other way around
lol
dc2008242 Linus Torvalds to be exact ^^
dc2008242 If you use Linux you probably know what an operating system is :P
***** ...except it's more stable, more secure, lighter to run, faster, and 100% free. As well as infinitely customizable. You got it the wrong way around, there's no reason to use anything BUT linux unless you really need a program that only works on a different platform.
This episode of _As Fast as Possible_ is definitely 20% cooler than the other episodes.
So basically Windows, OS X, or linux uses bootstrapt, which goes into the automatic booter of the CPU and then as soon as you interact with the system it sends out requests made out of binary code to the CPU every millisecond to enable you to move the cursor and more and the system uses graphical design to display images onto the video card. then you can open multiple programs with multitasking which is pretty self-explanatory. It sends out more requests to the cpu in order for the system to open up multiple tabs of things.
Long live Windows .... and Linux
Wally West FreeBSD MasterRace!
Wally West Windows can die imo. Also Mac OS X, Unix might be something, but a shitty UI on top of a gem is nothing but a waste.
vgamesx1 You must be a Mac fan, because thats what OSX really is.
michael weiss Making a joke = fan of something, Right... you must be the fan around here.
vgamesx1 Not sure what you are referring to, perhaps you could elaborate a bit?
My point is that FreeBSD is what OSX is based on, plain and simple.
Just like Android is based on Linux, not that hard to figure out.
not sure where the "joke" comes into play per this discussion.
Loved that simpsons reference...
Hello, Smithers. You're quite good at turning me on!

"MyLittlePonys1e5.mp4" Lol! 2:09
Hi Techquickie thank you for subtitles in your videos, its so more easy to understand for who that dont have english as primary language. Hope you keep doing this and make this change, if its possible, in your older videos that dont have that option.
2:09 "MyLittlePony s1e5.mp4" lol, I love it when Linus inserts little things about MLP
also:
"RESOURCE HOG"
"RESOURCE HOG 2"
"Hello Kitty.exe"
EDIT: THERE'S EVEN A PONY SQUEE AT 3:42
2:10 I'm noticing an increase of ponies in your videos :/
Radiant Rayv We're everywhere, and we can't halp ourselves :Y
*****
nah
Radiant Rayv
I also notice they like to troll in creative ways. Sooo I think they just like to derail weak-minded people with little things like that.
ArnieMcStranglehold There's also "Hello Kitty.exe" so, yeah.
Radiant Rayv There spreading! We must lower the population!
Bad Hair Day Linus?
It's always like that xD
8-Bit Jesus Man, I love Linus, but his hair for the most part is 'put some greasy shit and mix it up' style.
DrSQUIRRELBOY12 Dont type like that for the love of satan and all things unholy
***** Indeed, it is a masterpiece of modern abstract art. : )
DrSQUIRRELBOY12 it's always a bad hair day for Linus.
Thank you for explaining what an Operating system you are truly awesome and wonderful ^^
Awesome video. Great explanation.
Also, I enjoyed playing that Tomb Raider game, had a lot of fun.
You should do the next one on AES encryption!
yorkiesandskittles check this comic on AES: www.moserware.com/2009/09/stick-figure-guide-to-advanced.html
-great explanation there.
are you a computer engineer or something????
well, that aged like milk
Just something
Can we uninstall 2020 and re install it cos this one has a Virus
Should do a video about HDD cache size and its effects of performance love to here your "quickie" take on it
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
you both fell for the b8 lol
***** its just a copypasta dude dont need to act like the internet police over it lmao
***** then tone down the seriousness :^)
***** i give up with you smh
_The Windows OS Cycle_
*Windows XP*: Good
*Windows Vista*: Bad
*Windows 7*: Good
*Windows 8/8.1*: Bad
*Windows 10*: Good...?
UnknownUser Windows 8.1 isn't bad.
IrgendEineZecke Yes, it is and not very user friendly. Only advantage it has is it's faster than 7.
***** More recent OS's,
UnknownUser i use 8.1 and im perfectly fine with it. I find it better than 7.
UnknownUser Same story here, i find windows8.1 way better than windows 7..
Could you do a video explaining what Optical Drives are and the things to consider when buying one? Just a thought, the internet seems pretty sparse on this subject.
I am old enough to remember the C/PM and MSDOS operating systems. Back in those days any program could access all the hardware directly. The programs did this to speed things up on these slow computers. About the only thing the operating system was used for was disk drive input and output of files.
"An operating system is something that allows your computer to be more than a fan heater."
My university lecturer back in 1999/2000.
3:43 What a weird time to use an MLP squee sound clip.
Perhaps you could settle an argument, Linus... A friend of mine said last week that contemporary Windows versions still using paging at the hardware level. I have a hard time believing that. So, is it true? Does Windows 10/11 still use 640k pages when addressing memory at the hardware level?
I love this chanel is helping out with my 10years of computing experience and my gcse computing work
Howdy.
Back in the days of DOS 5 it was said the OS manages files and folders. Win 3.1 was said to be a graphical interface to the OS. Files are generated with applications.
These days these distinctions are blurred. Also has hardware management become an important part of the OS.
Regards.
I had an argument once where someone tried telling me that windows 10 isnt a program/batch there-of...
Continuing on in your series, may I suggest the wonderful subject of Memory Managers (MMU, MPU, Virtual Memory vs physical memory, memory access violations, the luscious SEGFAULT/SEGV that torments many beginner programmers).
Also, did you already cover the Windows BSOD? If so my bad.. I have not watched all of these yet... (historically Win32 not the first OSes to see these, I grew up being annoyed at Amiga Guru Meditations many times).
Nice set of topics so far...
Great explanation
Hey the case at 0:10 is mine!
Linux as fast as possible? Like what makes it special, pro's and cons. Also, could you please do a 1 month with linux thing like you did with OSX?
what makes most linux distros fast is because the kernel and OS are very minimal. They hardly have any bloatware to slow down the machine. They run what is necessary and that is it.
Further, there is constant active development on the linux kernel done by millions of people everyday so they can tweak, and tweak, and tweak code the maximum performance.
So, how the hell does energy make computers function and make its parts work the way they do.
Used as supplemental material for a PC class. Gotta love it
Windows Laptop: YOU CRAZY?!
Apple Macbook: Awesome.
Windows Desktop: Cool.
Apple Desktop: Gimme some of dat coffee.
You seem to confuse drivers with compilers.
A driver is not needed for any system, only for peripherals or ADVANCED features.
Thanks to you a lot your talk your way in declarer is amazing I wish you are my teacher in our college
his style of explanation is great!
LinusTechTips 3 videos on Operating Systems and only about 30 seconds about Linux and no mention of BSD? Really?
Also, while Windows and Mac OS X have built in user interfaces, Linux and BSD do not. Even in Windows and Mac OS X, the UI is a userspace process for security reasons (except, for some reason, font rendering in Windows.)
WayZHC In a sense the kernel is what defines the OS. It does all the important work. Everything else is just thrown into the package for convenience for the end user.
WayZHC I know very well that a kernel alone is useless, just like a car is useless without a steering wheel.
That doesn't mean that the collection of Linux distros has a lot of things in common. There are a lot of general things you can say that hold true for nearly all UNIX-like OSes.
Anyway. Who really cares about the "overal" comparison. Use the right tool for the right job, use what works for you.
The OS is the kernel plus the libraries and tools required to interact with it. That may or may not mean GUI, but Linux by itself is definitely not an OS. It has no interface at all, not even a shell.
Quinn Wood If that were the definition, GNU/Hurd would have no operating system since any part of it can crash and the OS will recover.
Quinn Wood, BSD is an operating system, Linux is not. Linux is a bare kernel. GNU/Linux is an operating system.
Where my Linux squad at?
+oakeydokey All missing.
If your boots are dueling instead of dual booting, it may be complicated, but it's as messed up as your dictionary calls.
Mint 17.3 rosa cinnamon
Debian, Raspbian, Retropie..... Linux ain’t bad at all
here.
please explain what is Kernel
Not sure how easy it would be, but I have a suggestion for tech quickies. You could possibly cover the osi model? And if its a stupid idea, please don't comment hate :/
Like for mentioning Firefox instead of Chrome :)
I imagine that in a few years there will be a As Fast As Possible explaining a topic with only video redirects to other As Fast As Possibles explaining all the sub-topics.
People say they can hack me, but what they don't realise is that I have Norton Antivirus installed on my system, I'm practically indestructible.
great explaining thank you !!
Forgot the part after boot strap the kernel.
IC Interpretation 11 FRs 2: Group and Treasury Share TranSactions
why is linus in multiple of my hw tasks
Linux master race.
Datimportedham Linus Master Race
strilight Aryan Master Race
strilight Linus Torvalds?
pies765 Who else?
Best time ever for these videos to come out if your doing A2 ICT lol
I bet that if apps gets ported from android to ios and visa versa, that all they need to do is use is a device driver and/or change the encryption key for it to be accepted by that other operation system.
You should make a video about MRAM.
wow.... 2 references this time. #1 at 2:09 and another at 3:43. subtle but there. awesome linus. ^_^
Learning about this stuff in college right now... Pretty cool
thank you bro i like the way you explained
Has any one tried pressing the left arrow button on the keyboard repeatedly as soon as the vid starts? This guy is a drummer alright!
Am I the only one who wasn't surprised that the antivirus software that had an annoying pop up was Norton?
Barber: What kinda cut u want?
Linus: Just fuck my shit up.
Points to Linus, for calling the Apple Beach Ball Thing... A Beach Ball.
When that Norton anti-virus popped up on the screen, I had to LOL.
You forgot to link "virtual memory" by ehamberg! +linustechtips
Fucking subboxes*...
*This video was earlier uploaded, but fucking subboxes failed
DutchRedGaming sir, could you not so quickly rush to your primitive and apelike instinct of cursing at the dumbest things? in the words of Will smith "stop cussing cuz you're not good at it"
I have this video seen since 3 days ago
Ook hier?
A question that popped into mu head while watching this.
Would killing explore.exe help improve game performance?
Not that I need that on my pc but curious. I have a gaming pc and I wouldn't see any difference as far as I am aware.
About a year late, and I don't have Windows, so I cannot check for sure, but probably not. Any file managers worth their salt don't use any CPU when they are in the background, only a little bit of RAM. Unless you are running out of RAM on your system, it won't really give you any performance boost.
Sorry i'm dumb, but is it like, if someone make a computer, then when your on that computer, you need a OS, but there is like hardwares CPU screen and stuff but to like make it work and do things on it, you need an OS?
How bout a video about HBM and how it relates to the new 390x coming and what it will and wont mean for performance differences
"surprisingly opaque window" LMFAO
Premiere Pro is labeled as "RESOURCE HOG" and I could not be laughing any harder right now without waking up everybody in the house. XD
0:01 Linus, Linus.. you forgot something.
Do a afap on wifi security types (such as WEP, WPA, WPA-PSK, etc)
when he said its memory manager is that also called the kernel. Trying not to get too confused
Building a pc should I get windows 7 or 8? Os costs $100?
please tell me you only installed norton as an example.
You forgot the penguin, wtf man. The closest you get is just showing a picture of a penguin.
but what is Linux? and should I use it?
If you don't know what it is then no.
What would you suggest if you wanted to get away from windows but still user friendly?
Hey, linus, you sould explain Why can't always just pop in the hard drive of any random desktop computer with an OS already on it into another and have it boot inside a laptop.... cause that's fun and stuff.
alex kohm The problem is that many of the installed drivers don't match the new hardware. Suddenly the OS is struggling to communicate with the hardware, and more often than not may BSOD (or kernel panic for you Linux, BSD, and OS X users).
I would like to see you or Luke trying out Linux.
Nice Titanium Design you got there.
So, who's love button is the space bar?
1:11 broken link
0:29
That's exactly the monitor I'm watching this on. What are the chances?
rambow70 What the hell does that have to do with what I said? It was just a coincidence I was pointing out..
Pretty good? It it mass produced
Which Programming -language is required to make Windos 8
In principle, an OS is a set of rules how to operate a computer and causing you to shout frequently "oh shit!", therefore the abbreviation OS for oh shit!
0:08 That is actually the Power button.
im more confused now
Great video man.
I want to thank linus for shouting out speaking of, that's when I close the video
My OS is 32bit. Others says i need 64bit base so i can upgrade my os to 64bit. Which hardware do i need to buy then?
OK Techquickie/Linus, which pony is best pony?
he just drank coffee.... hes so hyper
Can all application work on all operating systems Yes/ No
