i heard a guy do it on his bass one day. his amp blew out just as he fell to his knees in agonizing pain. he died the next day in the hospital. his last words were, "FEAR THE MIGHTY DINOSAUR ONION!".
This is why standards are *GOOD* . If every sound card, video card, network card, or hard drive had at least one standard interface protocol, you would only need one good driver for each. Then companies can write add-ons to these drivers for features of their products, and if the add-on has problems, the system will default to the standard driver. Features will go unused, but your system will still be able to use the basic operations of the device without crashing.
1 bit Is 1 And 0 for precessor And if you have 32 bit processor Its 32x2 = 64 numbers And if you have an 64 bit processor Its Is 64x2=128 numbers to workshop with.
Linus you make these ads interesting. Usually when the youtuber starts talking about somthing as a ad I skip forward or end the video. But for you I continue to watch it. Good job sir!
I love the was you promote your sponsors. It takes more time than the average plug, but its funny and I don't skip the part. Also, it often seems like you actually like what you're selling .
Good job getting more entertaining with your informative vids now Linus. I know 99/100 things you say in your vids, but i watch anyway just in case. :P So thanks!
i remember doing that on windows 98 with my bodoo banshee to get glide support, the drivers that came with the card didnt supported and the glide drivers didnt install, so to get full api support (d3d, glide 2.x, 3.x and open gl) y had to force windows to take them, i learned that in those days, i was just a kid and really helped me to undertand how drivers work, its funny that this kind of things keep working, maybe because the pc architecture still work the same today in the very basics of course. Btw love your videos linus.
on linux most of the drivers come free with the kernel. Also one kernel suits all distros, so generally if you don't have any userspace dependencies, if the driver is available, the driver is available across all distros, and (because it is source based) all architectures, that is if you can compile the bloody thing, which is a pain in the butthole, and you often have to do this if the driver is not included with the kernel. (stupid TP-link usb wifi adapter)
drivers are sys files with inf as description (like vid:pid for which devices driver is) and crt as signatures ... don't forget about USB standard Classes - that's way keyboards, mouses, external storage, printers(they need just drivers to render page) use one standard driver per class and it works
Hey there i really like these "Fast as possible" i have a suggestion about one that you could make, and that is the difference between an IPS monitor and a non-IPS one?
Great video, I have always wondered what drivers are. Please keep the videos under 5 minutes if possible but not too short like 2-3 minutes. Exceptions are ok if necessary.
The show is called "as fast as *possible*" Technology is not the easiest and most simple thing to explain and he does a damn good job with it. The actual info ends about 3:20 so people can just click away once the advertising shows up
yea, I wanted to see an episode about drivers ever since this type of video came up. An extended more detailed version on computerphile would be awsome though
Many years ago, I would boot my PC up and 1 of 2 things would happen 1) Windows would boot and run normally 2) A program would try to use rundll32 while another one was using it, this would cause a conflict and rundll32 error. The only way to get the computer to do anything was to reset of turn off and try again.
essentially, they are translators. If you think about this, your operating system might tell a printer to print 2 pages double sided. Let's say your operating system can speak multiple languages, english, spanish, etc. The operating system however is not understand french. The printer however, only speaks french and doesn't speak english. Now you have a problem, you can't get across the message without a translator, which would be the device driver. Now, what happens if you don't have your drivers updated, which happens with some people's computers, windows sometimes doesn't automatically do it so you have to do it through a program like driver easy. It would be like you speaking modern english and someone is speaking old english from the medieval times. You can't understand!!! Hope this helps you if you need a decent analogy.
If you want to make these shorter, instead of doing a sponsor spot just have a dollar shave club lower right ad running throughout the video and just mention it.
Also who writes the standard for the hardware device category APIs themselves? Do all "graphics card hardware" drivers provide the same driver API/interface/abstraction? For example, do they ALL provide the abstraction "drawPixel" as a method available to the OS, at the driver level? A game programming language then compiles down to call "drawPixel"s which then signals the hardware? Who defines those abstract methods? Where are they defined?
It is very interesting how computers are everywhere and very complex but nothing about printers exist out there. I really think computer printers are the most gatekept peripheral in the computer world. Can anyone please tell me where to find actually helpful content on how to understand the internal workings of a printer, that be very helpful of yoll.
I've been force-installing the Microsoft USB RNDIS6 driver everytime I connected a phone to my computer and enabled USB network tethering to fix the terribly slow network settings UI on my hardware.
There's an old saying that if you can't explain it in a simple mind then you dont truly understand it. That said... let's say I have no idea what any of this is, so as if answering a child , what is a driver in a computer?
Question; How about fraps and shadowplay? Becuase fraps laggs and is generally HORRIBLE on my build, but shadowplay gives me just 5% or so performance loss/ more lagg spikes. Isnt fraps a pure software while shadowplays works the hardware alone or something? Would like a detailed anwser from anyone :)
I don't know why people were complaining. That Dollar Shave Club stuff is hilarious.
Whoa. Dinosaur Onion is a hard octave to achieve okay.
Indeed, very difficult. /)

What a smart way to get me to watch all his videos. I started with the SDK video, it led me to the API video, and now the API video has led me here.

He already told his story on the forum and also once on a livestream.

Do a tech quickie as fast as possible about the western Digital colours? like a green drive , black, purple and red etc.
yes . nice idea.
9myr it's been done my guy
Clean, not over the top, and really usefull to teach what software is to friends who aren't in the whole tech world. Thanks again Linus!
That Doctor Who special effect was better than the actual show. Good Job!
It doesn't matter if this aren't "as fast as possible" what I like is the amount of information given and the examples and comparisons are very useful
Do a 32 bit vs 64 and what they are please
Vote this bloke up!
32 and 64 represents the no bus support your OS has.....
here 32 just represents 32 bus... and same for 64
Tyler Schloesser nailed it
1 bit Is 1 And 0 for precessor And if you have 32 bit processor Its 32x2 = 64 numbers And if you have an 64 bit processor Its Is 64x2=128 numbers to workshop with.
You can only use 4 GBs on a 32bit system and as much as ram on a 64bit system(Supported by the cpu and the motherboard).
you talk quick and make joke funnies! SUBSCRIBED
If I ever start writing music, I'm going to write Dinosaur Onion for every E-flat, just to confuse everyone.

Could you try to explain how a CPU works and what interrupt errors are?! ;)
dollar shave club is the most useful thing i have seen youtubers sponsor
I don't mind the video being long when the person isn't saying a bunch of junk, so go ahead and make it 15min if you wish lol

Can you please do a episode on keyboard switches. All of the cherry things are confusing
Until he does that, you should watch the Tek Syndicate video on switches, if you haven't already.

I think your fast as possible series are great. They are as fast as possible to make an often difficult subject understandable.
god dam linus is on every channel, even unexpected places. I looked at my wallet and linus appeared on my drivers license.
"The freaking Doctor"
